- If you are experiencing the software update message that reads, "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available", then try this easy one step method. Basically you have a rooted phone and by downloading Samsung Kies and hooking up your Samsung Galaxy phone to it, it will unroot your firmware and make it an official Samsung firmware so you can update.
Note that it is wise to backup your data as I am not responsible should anything go wrong.
In the past I had to unroot, download my original firmware and download Odin and Samsung Kies. But now for some reason I only had to download Samsung Kies. I hope this saves you alot of extra work. I did this on my S3, S4, and my S5 with success.

the link for the samsung kies goes to the "india" version which FYI doesn't allow you to download the old kies, but the australian one does, i suggest people to go to THEIR own samsung website NOT through the link that's given

what if you device say it is official but it is still refusing to update software
the kies 3 its for all new devices like s5 s6 s7 and more and cheap devices from 2015 or for note 3 only

hello I tried this method, My phone model is GT-19152 and the android version is 4.2.2, Its also showing that my device has been modified. after following all your steps the Samsung Kies shows that "This is the latest firmware" when its clearly not. What to do now?

For those who are asking if it can be done without deskstop/laptop its quite impossible, this is the best way for you to do it I email Samsung about this because I had the same problem (because I rooted my tablet) and they adviced me do the same process or I should go to the nearest samsung store. JUST SAYING GUYS BECAUSE IT MIGHT HARM YOUR DEVICE MORE IF YOU WON'T FIX IT PROPERLY. ☺

I just bought a unlocked Verizon note 8 and out my T-Mobile sim card and verizon wouldn't do software updates because of this. so I took out my sim card and connected to WiFi and poof the software update started downloading :)
That's the trick. Take out your sim card and connect to WiFi and press software update

What the hell? Kies didn't even make a solid connection with my phone, whatever driver it installed when I plugged the phone in killed my screen. It didn't even firmware update. Anyone know how to get the touch screen working again? I can't swipe on home screen. Restarting doesn't help. Pulling the battery does nothing.
