th-cam.com/video/tJfNBMMZYBY/w-d-xo.html Oh yeah, that's the stuff! By chance Dana and I did an outstanding job at covering different aspects of this technique, and plus it's always a pleasure to watch her videos 🙂
I recommend trying badger Mintair paints ghost tint set. It’s often affordable and you get so much of each color. They dry a little glossy though so be sure to finish with a flat varnish.
I'm going to be a forward thinker and use both! Just some advice though? It's okay to call it Shadowing and Highlighting. But, whatever floats your boat, skipper.
I don't know if it's cool name dropping other channels here, but I hope it's okay to say GRG Miniatures has been putting out great videos exploring this style of coloured under painting for a long while. Totally changed how I think about base coats, shadows and highlights.
Typcial Goobertown content (shoutout to Dana too) - precise and always well structured :) I like the approach a lot and imo it is superior to a wash, especially in batch painting.
When I watch other painter use airbrush, its always in pristine condition. Mine does not look like that and this makes me sad all the time. Good to see that not every airbrush need to be mint condition to be working fine, just like mine ;D
A lot of painters I notice do underpainting at the time they do the zenithal. So it’s first instead of after the fact to get really good results. I don’t have an air brush for stuff like this, though it can be done with a rattle can too. Fantastic video as always. So informative.
Glad to see RodgeRules mentioned in the description. Lots of good work happening on the historicals side of minis TH-cam that unfortunately doesn't get a lot of attention.
So fun to see Goob and Dana together! Also at 2:49 the look on Dana’s face when you start unpacking all your stuff on her clean desk is PRICELESS. I laughed so hard I had to rewind and watch it a couple of times.
Back in the day Privateer Press helped put this sort of thing on the map. Almost no other painting guides actually recommended painting on the shadows. PP worked from mid-tones out, while everyone else just recommended to build up consecutive highlights. Seeing that in one of their books way back really opened up my painting.
Next time you do a collaboration video, you should both say alternating words in the script so viewers have to watch both videos simultaneously: Brent: "Welcome... Goober... Hobbies... name... Brent" Dana: "To... town... my... is" etc
Sometimes a video comes out that just hits harder. These results were just amazing and fascinating. Also how can Brent even make army men look so good!?
As someone who is just getting into this hobby and just learning to paint, this channel and Brent's excitement have really made getting into the hobby easier as I feel more prepared and educated and have a lot more joy.
I just started a Space Marine army scheme using a monochromatic undershot shade, and it's great to see this affirmation! I love seeing your systematic approach to testing the full range of different techniques.
Back in 1985 Boris Vallejo wrote "Fantasy Illustration Techniques" and I have long remembered (sort of) this quote (page 44) "I like to use a reflection of what is around in the shadow areas of the skin. If the scene has vegetation, it's nice to use some green on the skin as well as some warm colours to offset the coolness of the green. If it is a snow scene, I like to use blues and purples on the skin to give the impression of cold." This feels like a more deliberate approach to what you are doing with your shading here. Adding colours to the shadows to reflect the surroundings, or using a single colour in the shadows (of all materials) to establish a unifying light source are very valid artistic methods to help create the illusion of reality in your art - be it on a miniature or a painting.
Exactly my thoughts. Study how classical painters chose colors for shadows on people, it's a reflection of the environment. Do the same thing for the sky above
I'm so glad there are creators like you and Dana and many others for this hobby. This video is not only wholesome and fun but I think a very useful resource that I'll be revisiting in the future. Thank you so much for making videos.
I'm always a big fan of coloured shadows, I suppose this is an easy way to accomplish that. An even older Sam Lenz video on the Tabletop Minions channel (I think it was from December 2017 or so - I remember he was painting a skeleton from Warhammer Underworlds) showed him wet blending different colours into the shadow areas. I've been using that method on almost everything I've painted since then, it had a huge imact on my personal style.
The first TH-camr I’ve seen who goes through each variable for the cause and effect of how paint’s interact with each other. This is my learning style too and no other TH-camr could teach me as well as you have
I love these joint vids and you both are among my faves!! I’d love to see you do more remote conversations while painting swapping ideas, techniques and perspectives!!
okay so dana's video won the thumbnail game but loved the video with so much science! love your videos and hope to catch you live some time again. You are a credit to the hobby community sir.
Ive always remembered your Blood Angels army painting and doing a black undershot shadind that really stuck with me. Fascinating to see that concept expanded across the color wheel
The Painting Scientist hits again! This video must have been a nightmare to edit. Worth it, you made a great resource to come back to again and again🎉🎉🎉
i like to start with the shadow colour then paint in zenithal style, it is easier to miss spots or over shadow and the angle from the bottom is often awkward. It doesn’t work all the time but if i can i dont like that. Then i go back with the shadow colour lightly. Also thank you for all the hard work, i was looking for this for a longtime!
@@GoobertownHobbies indeed! Ive learned a lot from both channels! I dont really wargame, but am in the process of designing 3d printed, fully articulated versions of my dinosaur sculpts, and what ive learned between your channel and Dana's has been so incredibly helpful.
Double the talent in one vid! Off to watch Danas after this. Side note. Shadow tones look best if they are more vivid than the mid tones and highlights in my opinion. For example a cadmium orange midtone looks amazing with a with a redish brown tone mixed into it for the shadows and a paler teal mixed into the orange for the highlights. Though I do like using an opposite color from the color wheel from time to time if it is a special figure or if it shows a lot of skin or fur. I think skin shadows look amazing using blues, purples and greens. This is how I do it since I switched to mostly using oil based paints. I love the amount of pigments they contain.
Didn't know Dana yet, but there's some immediate good vibes here :) (Also loved the shot of just more and more stuff piling on her desk coming out that bag hahah)
I really need to get an air brush. Thanks for this video, very inspirational. I know you say I don’t need one, but an air brush would save a lot of time.
I've been experimenting a bit with this technique on my salamanders space marines and found that this works quite well. I start with a zenithal from a 45 degree angle, which only leaves the a few dark spots. Warp lightning for the undershot and striking scorpion green from above. A few highlights with poisonous cloud from army painter and the armor is done. The only downside is that it's hard to fix mistakes without starting over from the start. I really like these collaboration videos and hope that we will see more of them in the future.
Great video! I realize you told Dana to go fast, but that did mean that there was a lot of airbrush artifacts in the video. Maybe not the best promo for airbrushing. Thinning and/or upping the pressure of the compressor would have helped a lot. Of course you already kno this, but that might have been a good addition to the voiceover at some point.
Great video! That said, if I may be so bold, I think this technique should be called "Shadow Casting". That said, that's just me being, well...me. anyways love seeing your videos, Brent (and good to see Dana too)!
This is something I've been doing, actually. Feels like such a quick cheat to get depth and interest on a model. Definitely needs cleanup but it gets superfast results.
I have been hoping to see an overview of shadow/highlight color combos ever since I saw your chaos warriors, thank you! Also, the amazon and yeti show how dramatic adding shadows can be. It really makes the mini pop.
I like the term Nadiral shading. I never tried this before, but I think im going to give it a try over my usual shading and see how it looks. I always learn something from you man. Thank you so much. I doubt i would have gotten to the level im on without you
I've been doing this to my space marines for a while now. I use Tamiya X-13 (metallic blue) for the base coat, and then I hit the underside with Liquitex Prussian Blue ink.
I've planned doing exactly this technique on larger models. In my case an eldar knight, his base color is pale sand and I planned a purple and brown undershot shading. The effect should be that of a bone armour, just as the lore describes. Thanks for the video, I was pretty insecure concerning the undershot shading and if it'll be a successful technique.
I was painting some Cthulhu board game minis and played around with priming the mini white, then doing a dark spray from the top, which created a strange iridescent effect that was appropriately confusing on the eyes (but sadly got lost a little in the subsequent painting steps)... In my head I was calling *that* process "reverse zenithaling", but I'm not surprised that there's other hobbyists that have already coined the term, not even referring to the same thing. maybe "negative zenithal"...? anyway, I've been wanting to try the colorful shadows method for a while now, so this is great inspiration :)
The sheer amount of times Brent and Dana say word “undershot” in both videos is reminding of that episode of goobertown hobbies where Brent for the first time ever decided to “paint bravely”. 😂😂😂
Just a quick FYI for those who still have a good amount of the early speed paints. I've had little issues with reactivation when using them until I started using them through my airbrush. The fact your laying down such thin filter like layers of paint means it can reactivate more easily. That said I was using them on high traffic "zenithial" areas on battletech miniatures so was easily able to incorporate that into weathering. I still think using them especially in this manner through the airbrush is worth my time though. 👌
As you're shading over a base coat how about doing both the shading, and the Zenathol? You could even slapchop that way, base, dark then drybrush light. It might make an interesting alternative to the black, grey, white if you find another combination or two. You could combine the two to make a much more stylised shading effect rather than being limited to an all over drybrush from the basic slapchop method.
The reason orange shaded so well with brown is because brown IS dark orange. It's just the darker version of the same base coat like you talked about right after.
Interesting timing, i've been basecoating my death guard more recently kinda like that, death guard green spray on whole model and found a purple spray (too shiny/glossy though but hey) , then proceed to highlight the model (from the top), and I was gonna try a little different tonight, normal green spray (same as above) and then gonna keep adding shadow
He made me promise to go watch Dana's video, but I just watched that one and came to this one. Do I have to go back and watch her video again? Am I going to be trapped in an infinite loop of going back and forth between these two videos?

Thanks so much for coming to visit, and making these videos with me Brent!!! It was a ton of fun, let's do it again sometime!!! 😊😊😊
heck yeah! 🙂
I imagine Brent yelling "I'm on vacation" every time Dana asked him to take a turn on the airbrush
I just didn't want to clog up her airbrush ;-)
more like I wouldn't give him a turn on the airbrush, I was having too much fun!!!!
Such a cool video! We agree that “Undershot Shading” is a super simple way to add interest to your minis and Speedpaint is a great tool to use!
I've been getting great results with Purple Alchemy sprayed onto an orcy green and Hive Dweller Purple onto Hawkquoise!
Dana’s B-roll Brent faces are spot on
Oh my god, 2 of my favorite minipainting TH-camrs in one video. The world is not ready.
Two of my favorite and most chill mini painters working together! Nice!

My 2 favourite mini youtubers in 1 video! Let's go!
brent is going crazy with the collabs lately and they have all been amazing!
Brent and Dana my mind is blown, cant wait to see what Dana says. Keep being you Brent
I JUST started using this technique a few days ago, it's cool to see a video with you two doing it as well
nice! It's a fun one 🙂
Never watched Dana but pinky promise is a pinky promise, I'm going to her channel now.

I tried this yesterday, using a purple to undershot a gold basecoat. It looked so good that I'm always going to try an undershot colour.
pretty sweet, eh? :-)
I really want to see more of these colorations with Dana and Brent. They are both great on their own. Together they are spectacular.
hehehe, thanks! I'll have to loop back through canada again soon :-)

I love you two sitting in front of the minis and looking at them with the childful glee in your eyes :D
the Bob Ross of the miniature painting world.
Really interesting and helpful video! thanks for the testing and analysis!
Big fan of both of you guys. Great collab
You did the Canadian TH-camr tour eh? Good stuff 🍁
Both videos were great :) Good collab. Was planning on something similar with multiple light sources, will add this to the mix.
