    That even major brands now show interest in this segment is largely thanks to RE, in my opinion. The Indian success story has gained followers and other brands are now also keen to try to cash in on this. And propably kicking themselves for not going there earlier. This bike is very important for RE so I am sure that it will be a good one. And propably will sell really well. Will be interesting to follow how it turns out.

I thought it would be announced at EICMA but KTM is only dropping hints so far. I really like it, and it will be a big seller for RE. However, I still don't understand how it is possible that modern manufacturers cannot seem to keep the weight down of their single cylinder ADV bikes. A Suzuki DRZ400 (as from 2000) weighs only 320 LB (although produces a bit less HP than the RE Hima). The same for the BMW G650X: in 2006 it weighed approx 320 LB, and produced a similar amount of HP as the RE. Only the more expensive brands (like e.g. the KTM 390 Adventure ) manage the weights OK-ish in their modern models. Why are these modern bikes so heavy? Is it the electronics? The ABS?

    • @user-vy5uy9fo8p
      @user-vy5uy9fo8p ปีที่แล้ว +23

      To bring down weight, you have to use more plastic than what RE is willing or use an aluminium frame which will make the bike expensive

    • @martyn_g
      @martyn_g ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think weight becomes less of an issue if a) it’s not used in enduro style off road and b) if the seat height is low (easy to dab your feet down in a river crossing) and c) the bikes centre of gravity is low.. the opposite of a Tenere 700

    • @jimmyjames4003
      @jimmyjames4003 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Blame governments for 'requirements'
      ABS adds weight, Liquid cooling ads weight, Catalytic converts add weight.
      Add to that the need to keep stuff cheap to keep the bike affordable.. and weight is gonna be there.
      I'm with you, I'd kill for a simple ADV or simlar bike under 375LBS ready to ride with enough power to not make me feel vunerable if I have to hit the interstate.
      I'd kill for a less proprietary G650 XCountry...

    • @twowheeledparadox
      @twowheeledparadox ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It may be a multitude of factors. Yes, ABS and big catalytic converters add to weight. Considering how lean engines are made to run these days, they probably need extra material to be more robust.

    Royal enfield has Dakar ambitions, one of the reason they developed a liquid cooled 450, and one of the member from design team have said the Himalayan is not the top model in it's sub category of royal enfields that would share the same frame and engine. We know there is a scrambler and a roadster/naked version with the same engine, so there is a high possibility they would bring in a enduro version which is lighter and more powerful and more offroad/rally focused which would sit on top the himalayan 450 range.

    I really like what this company is trying to do and given what I have been able to learn so far it all seems very good to me. But it will probably take a bit of time to see if Royal Enfield's new first effort at a liquid cooled engine is reliable. Provided it proves so, it will depend upon it having a low enough seat height (31") and the price in the USA. Specs, sheer numbers and reviews by others are helpful and necessary, but never tell the whole story or tell me what I really need to know. It will come down to actually seeing it in person and the all- telling test ride. if all the planets align, and I hope they do, there will be one in my garage.

Color TFT display will cost a lot and well I don't look at anything more than speed and odometer while riding. I'm interested in the bike but price will be a big factor.
    Based on weight of 350 pounds, sounds like the ideal ADV bike is the DR650. Really what is there in the ADV world under 400 pounds besides the CRF300L Rally?

      @twowheeledparadox ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cowmath77 Ah, yes. That's respectable for a soft trail bike. As an adventure bike, I think the Himalayan is a better option. The weight difference is a small sacrifice. The international spec Scrambler 400X at 179 kg is about 17 kg lighter than the Himalayan 450. The Indian spec 400X gets stronger wheels to cope with local roads plus some small accessories so at 185 kg it is only 11 kg lighter than the Himalayan 450 (196 kg). The fact that the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X had to be equipped with stronger and heavier wheels to cope with Indian roads says something.

    • @twowheeledparadox
      @twowheeledparadox ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cowmath77 Adventure is what you make of it so any bike can do what you want it to but some bikes will be better off the road than others. The Triumph puts out the same amount of power as the Himalayan and 2.5 Nm of torque less so the Himalayan obviously has more performance. Won't the new 2024 KTM 390 Duke be better than the 400X since it is lighter, has only 12 mm less ground clearance, the same suspension travel and more power?

      @chrispekel5709 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I guess it's the trade off between 10 out of 10 reliability vs 9 out of 10 but better performance. Considering how many scooters and bikes are now watercooled in the developing world I think that people want it these days. When you're comparing 11hp to 16hp it is substantial

    • @DifferentSpokesTV

    No. The unicorn should have an 18'' rear wheel, greater suspension travel and a monoshock with vanes, a more joyful engine and better final speed, also a headlight that at least shines well. In addition, this Himalayan is still very heavy and has limited clearance from the crankcase to the ground taking into account its long wheelbase. As if that were not enough, the maximum seat height is 845 mm (33.3''), so it is not a motorcycle designed for tall people. Is it good for adventure? yes, more than before. Is it useful for traveling? of course, more than its previous version. But for several reasons it will suffer off-road compared to a 50/50... and the unicorn should be, above all things, as capable on the road as it is off-road. Instead, I see the Himalayan as a scrambler with a 21'' front wheel.
