    What a great idea to have the traditional heel flap as the bottom !!! Mind blown 🤯. Thanks !!

Super,super,super.🙂
    Dziękuję za taką perfekcyjną lekcję.
    Następne skarpetki zrobię z taka piętą, bo jest cudowna. Pozdrawiam i czekam na kolejne ,ciekawe filmy o skarpetkach.

    See now, this is exactly why I love you. You take a pattern but don’t treat it as sacred. Normal people have differently shaped feet. You have shown us how to make a sock pattern PRACTICAL. Holy smokes I can’t figure out why no one else does this.

    I sat here in the den, in my robe, and while sipping from my hot mug, I watched this video on doing the heel and gusset...better than watching TV! Great idea with padding the heel! Love the extra cush. Why not? There are no hard rules on knitting socks. You are teaching me that socks are meant to be customized to my liking! Yes!

    Thank you for all the help you give to us knitters. I’ve been knitting socks for 55 years and the only pattern I use for turning heels is the slip one knit one. It’s a very strong heel. I also only knit top down, four needles because I get so much enjoyment knitting with them. I’ve tried other ways, but no thank you. I’m very happy with my way. Even though I know how to knit almost anything ( not fair isle ) I still enjoy many many tutorials and sometimes I do learn something. ❤️

    I love making socks from the toe up and so glad I found this class...I have made my heel using German short rows...wrap and turn...but I have never made a heel using the flap until I found your top down class...to be honest I don't like making a top down sock...but this is my new way of making socks...I always thought the flap looked hard so I never tried it...you made it so easy...THANK YOU...

    Thank you so, so much! My socks always wear out on the bottom of the heel (and the pad under my big toe) first, so this is awesome! I love toe up on magic loop and needed a way to do the heel that didn't have 'holes' in it from German short rows. Thanks again! :) We can all have bespoke socks now!

    Janna... you are awesome! I'm making socks now with your method of heel flap BUT I have added a strand of Alpaca into the toes and heels for warmth. I bought 2 sets of the twin sock yarn.. and I'm following your lead by doing one pair backwards for my one grand daughter who never wears matching stocks. 😅 You are inspirational. Thanks!

  • @bobseldestagain
    @bobseldestagain 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is so awesome! Like you I wear out the bottom of the heel. So far my solution has been to either darn that area to pad it, usually before I wear it, or to add a stronger strand of yarn while I'm knitting that part, but that makes it too bulky. Luckily I'm doing this only on my heavier boot socks that I wear during colder weather.
    I also want to add that your tutorial videos are incredibly well done and I share them with the rest of my knitting buddies!

    Hello! I just wanted to say that you’re an amazing teacher and I thoroughly enjoy your style! I’m an experienced sock knitter, but have never found a heel I like all that much. I love Judy’s Cast-on method, so I needed a decent heel for toe up socks (plus, like most people I’ve found that the bottom of the heel usually blows out quickly, depending upon the quality of the Yarn). So, I decided to give your method a try and I absolutely love it! Your written instructions are spot on, and I found the whole process to be totally pain free and easily accomplished. I have very small feet and was worried about that, but your formula works beautifully and without having to make any adjustments, my first attempt fit like a glove. I really like the padded heel, and I think that the heel just looks better (I never liked that flap going up the back of my heel). So, I now have the absolute best-ever heel mastered, and it is going to be my go-to heel from here on out. Thanks ever so much and please keep the videos and the KAL projects coming. I think you rock!

    I always wondered why the heel flap wasn't on bottom of the heel. The last pair of socks I knit I reinforced the bottom of the heel by weaving in extra yarn over & under the rows. Won't need to do that again. Would it work to knit heel with yarn held double for extra squish, and the rest of the sock held single?

      @@lournacrooks527 After the heel turn, you'll want to arrange the stitches so that the heel is on 1/2 of the needle and the top of the foot stitches are on the other. When you pick up all the gusset sts, add them to the heel sts. So in the end, you'll have the top of the foot sts on one half, and everything else on the other. It's really you choice where you prefer to have the beg. of the round. Whether that's in the center of the back of the heel, or on one right side of the heel sts. Hope that helps!

    Many people have a heavy callous on their heel which is rough. I used to. I don't have that anymore. The socks I've knit since fixing the problem of my heel callouses which incidentally would split down to raw flesh-- talk about painful --but I have been free of that problem now for years. One of the fixes which worked for this was to always wear wool sock as wool has lanolin, (good for our skiing) the other was to correct the cause of the hard callous, which was consuming dairy products.
    I stopped consuming all dairy products altogether to see if my severe arthritis in my hands was being caused by dairy which was my guess and I guess based upon how I had dreadful reactions to dairy as a child (severe constipation) -- and fortunately, my guess was right. My hands recovered but my heels did too! I had thought I had gotten over my reaction to dairy which was severe constipation (by eating bran cereal daily). Instead as I got older the effects were different -- I got arthritis of my hand and it put me in a wheelchair with my back like one month up to four times per year. I no longer have to use a wheelchair since I gave up all dairy.
    My mother had the terrible heels (but she was a cheese fanatic) which I also developed -- but had no idea that split heels and arthritis were an effect of dairy. When I stopped dairy altogether including cheese (admittedly -- this was the hardest to give up), when my arthritis of my hands reversed itself, my heels healed also completely.
    My heels do not build callouses which split and bleed most painfully. This was an effect of the casein protein in milk. Now I use plant-based milk. It isn't that hard as the Soy milk by Silk in vanilla, is what I use and it tastes good to me -- so it was an easy change. If I had chosen a different plant-milk such as almond or oat, my heels and arthritis -- would also have healed.
    Before, my heels, would bleed and were painful, no matter how I soaked them and used a pumice stone, they would split. The heels no longer split at all. I don't have to use cream on them either. Sometimes I use hand lotion about maybe once a month. And no splitting. And no arthritic fingers and no wheelchair for my back. Eating pizza is not a good trade off when you have to be in a wheelchair!
    My socks do not wear out at all at the heels on the bottom of my heels. For all the Neutragena Norwegian hand cream I used, I buy sock yarn and have like 14 pairs I have made -- but I am out of pain. Isn't it wonderful that Chuck Taylor's by Converse are so fashionable!!!!
    Your video is good. And yes, I have a high instep. So the heel flap works better than doing an after thought heel. I do want to learn to knit toe up with heel flap just because it is good to know.
    But I will tell you, that I have always used Kroy Sock by Patons yarn, and I am so in love with the results. The walk without the pain of split heels means that I have a smile on my face.
    Again, thank you for your detailed video.

    Thank you for this set of videos! I started some knit sock in July and didn’t like the heels in them, so let them lie for a few months. With these videos, I have one sock ready to knit the leg, and for the second one, I’m picking up gusset stitches and am about to work the decreases for completing the gusset!
    THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
    Excellent tutorial! I merely adapted my stitch number to allow me to add the heel flap and then the gusset.
    BTW, When I look at your hands, I see the knitting. Incidentally, your hands do look a bit rough and SORE! The only comment I would make is to suggest that you use some healing cream that your hands tolerate, to help with their healing.
    Your work may preclude the wearing of bandaids, so I will tell you what I do to ease the pain of open sores. I have a mild cortisone skin cream which I place on a lesion or cut and wrap the bandaid (or 2) on the injured spot. In about two or three days, my sores heal quite well. If this helps, use it. If it doesn’t, I imagine you will eventually find something that works. Or not. Your hands, your business!
    Blessings, and Happy New Year!!!🤪

    Just did a pair of just above the ankle socks in mohair bamboo yarn. It was a little challenging but I am done with a 6 day power knitting session. I take walks 2 to 3 miles a day and took breaks. Just knit when I felt like it and in front of movies at night. The Election has produced the time needed to finish the second one faster then the first. I did the heel reinforcement and every step just ending shorter as I wasn't sure about how much yarn I had on the cone. I will not make many out of mohair as it was a bit hard to keep the stiches in order of number etc...oh my are they soft and warm!

    Wonderful tutorial! I wish I could watch it slow motion since I need to do socks and I want to do them toe-up. Your hands are beautiful, the hands of a hard working person, I never noticed them until you mention it. Thank you!!!

    Love the tutorial! New subscriber ! I love how you switched the heel. I’m knitted a pair of socks cuff down for my hubby and I’m at starting the heel point , can I also make the heel also have the thicker flap?

    • @PurlTogether
      @PurlTogether  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely! Just continue on with the slip stitch reinforcement. I like to carry on with that until I'm finished with the gusset decreases.

    I love your video! Is it possible to have toes, heels and cuff in a different color with this toe up sock method?

    • @PurlTogether
      @PurlTogether  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, you'd just switch colors after you complete the toe increases, then switch again when you begin the heel flap. The change back to the same yarn you use for the foot, after you complete the heel turn, and when you join back up knitting in the round.

    I love that idea to put the slip stitch section on the sole. Ive thought of that, but havent tried it yet. Thats where i get holes, too! When knitting cuff down, i always make my heel flap 3 inches long. Its very comfortable. Ill have to watch this a few times!

    My brain wasn’t computing. Didn’t scroll down far enough to see the pattern to download. Just was trying to follow your video. With all my interruptions with all my dogs barking and jumping all over me I was getting so confused. Thanks again for writing me back.

    Oooohhh...good video! Thank you. I have "heel confusion" going on. There are so many different heel types, & videos to go with them. The whole process hasn't really clicked in my brain yet, even though I've made probably 6 pairs of socks. Get there eventually. Have to stubborn it out. :)

    I love love love your version! Higher arch, too yay!! Double Great tips.. many thanks..
    Most importantly, the heel bottom is the stronger and more reinforced area, rather than the back / very helpful!

    Jana, can you address the way you knit your SSK....it seems you knit it from the opposite direction and I wonder if that makes it tighter or lay flat. I have followed this video and absolutely loved it. Thank you.

    • @PurlTogether
      @PurlTogether  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since this video was made, I've changed the way I do the SSK. This video shows a couple of styles that both end in the same result. I now use the second way of putting my left needle in underneath and knitting through the back loop. th-cam.com/video/rDrgvCY0GMc/w-d-xo.html

    I can't thank you enough - you are a fantastic teacher (my brain needs to know the 'why' as well as the 'how', and you manage to do all that AND keep your work in view. Genius!
    I have also been looking for a way to customise a toe up sock for an insanely high instep. When I do top down socks, my heel flap is 10cm long (measurement from centre of ankle bone to floor) and these fit well. Can you please put some maths behind working out how long to make the heel flap in your method here? instead of 3inches from the end of the foot, would I make it that same 10cm/4inches measurement, or something else? (and two of my adult children have even higher insteps than I do - can you start the heel flap half way along the foot?)
    thank you again for such an informative, not boring, EXCELLENT tutorial

    • @PurlTogether
      @PurlTogether  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would try it using the same measurements. You're just flipping the heel, so the triangle that is created with the heel flap and gusset should remain the same size. Let me know how it goes!
