Words of compliment to You Bloomingknitter because You are the most complete, most accredited sock knitter I have found outside of Ravelry and Liat and I praise You for this talent.
Thank you for these videos. I have twenty sock books and this is the only pattern (I bought your pattern on ravelry) that works for me. Its so easy to use your method. I am slowly working my way through my stash of sock yarn that I have purchased over the years. Thank you.
Thanks, Tina.
I had started a pair of toe-up socks and wasn’t happy with the heels without additional gussets. My feet aren’t large, but I could see that having gussets would allow the socks to last longer. The tension across the insteps would be reduced by the added stitches from the gussets on each sock.
SO CLEAR!!! Even with a different sock pattern, I can see how to adapt the heel and add a gusset to each side of a sock.
I appreciate your tutorial, HEAPS!!! Thanks, again.
Blessings!❤️
I always come back to this video when I need a refresher. Thank you
This tutorial is SO EASY to follow. Your instructions are so clear, thank you so much for posting this! ~Diana from Canada
Love your style and instructions. I haven't done this type of heel on a toe up for 5 years and wanted to relearn it. Great video.
This is the very best video to show me how to knit to up heels , and the best is: with a flap! 'till now l thought that was impossible, ' cause a book called ~ "bible for sock knitting" told me so. I wanna thank you so much! I'll begin right now this evening to do it, ' cause I'm still knitting a toe up sock and l must knit a heel Your way to explain is great! Please excuse me, when my English isn't as well as I want it to be. Thank you so much and be blessed!
I was so confused about the gusset, heel flap and turn but your video explained so clearly I feel I might be able to finish my sock. Thank you for making the video and for sharing it with those of us that need multiple repeats. Deb Jaeckel
thanks for the tutorial. this helps me understand that the flap and heel gusset method is the same for both toe up and cuff down. And the only difference is where to knit the reinforcement section of the heel. This has been very helpful!! thank you!!
Excellent...I'm new to toe-up socks and honestly, I've been avoiding them because I love the heel flap and gusset (it's my favorite part of making the sock) and didn't want to give it up, even with how much I don't like grafting toes (I'm good at it, but I don't like it...I've had socks languish on needles for weeks because I didn't want to graft the toe). Your tutorial and explanations are clear and much appreciated! Now I know I can skip grafting and keep my beloved heel method. Thank you!
I have been wanting to learn to do these for a long time now. This is an AMAZING tutorial and so well explained. I have been making socks by "rote" just how my mother taught me, without knowing why I was doing things. NOW I KNOW, thanks to you. I will be going through your videos like a fiend.
Suzanne Martin That is so awesome that my tutorials could help you. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Excellent tutorial, straightforward, clear and easy to follow, thank you!!!
am new to socks - not brand new, but slowly working my way from worsted to DK to fingering yarns - and finally trying flap/gusset heel instead of short rows or toe-style decreases. thanks for the very extensive help! ;)
the first sock video that has clear instructions. so going to knit this! Thank YOU!
I have been afraid to knit socks because of the heel flap, turn, gusset, and pick up. I was so confusing and mysterious. Thank you for this tutorial! It is detailed, clear and with actual sock yarn and needles. I can do this.
kimmierroo Awesome, happy to here that. Good Luck with them, and let me know if you have any questions.
I've been looking for just this method of knitting socks and couldn't find it until I came across your tutorial - thank you. You give great instructions. I do hope you follow up with the pattern.
Excellent tutorial....you are now my 'go to' resource person. Thanks!
Thanks Mel!
love the way you knit your sock very professionally done
Thank you for the super helpful tutorial.
Your teaching is incredible.
Wonderful video! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Stay warm up there.
Thank you for this tutorial. There are many tutorials on how to start a toe up sock using magic loop but very few take you through the heel and gusset. I'm new to sock knitting and hope this tutorial helps me to finish a toe up sock.
I am so excited to try this! I have wanted a toe-up pattern that I liked as much as top down but I love a heel flap and gusset. Finally I can do it!
Great video. I love the smooth heel flap on the bottom of the heel, and the slip stitch heel after the turn. I will definitely try this on my next sock!
Thank you for a great tutorial. It was very easy to understand and follow!
This is a brilliant video. I had most of a skein of yarn leftover after knitting a pair of baby socks, and wanted a toe up sock that I could make up quickly (no pattern so I needed to check the size as I went), but wanted the durability and comfort of a padded heel. I love, love, LOVE this heel construction. It is by far the most comfortable I've ever worn, and it was fun to knit.as well. Your instructions were very, very clear, and it was easy to make allowance for my very high insteps. Thank you for sharing this.
Carol Cripps Awesome, I am always happy to hear when my videos helped others accomplish what they want. Thanks for contacting me.
You make everything look so easy !!! Your tutorials are great.
Thank you for this tutorial. I love your yarn ♥♥♥ Sending hugs from Germany
I love this heel turn. easy for me to remember. Thanks. Making a pair of socks for my son for Christmas.
I'm hard on socks, and don't like to darn, so I also use the slip-knit pattern on the heel flap as well as the heel turn and following. Since that decreases the row gauge, I knit more rows for the heel flap, picking up for each pair of rows.
Wanted to comment... He, he, he since I have watched your informative videos I have been so busy knitting socks that I have been making my daughter socks and me at the same time. I have the 1 sock syndrome right now. I have worn one of the completed socks around all day at home and have dubbed them my Pollyanna socks.
just found your video and just started knitting socks, thank you thank you
So glad you find my tutorials, please feel free to get in touch if you have questions.
I was just looking for this kind of tutorial, thank God I found yours! =) I was very surprise to find out the year it was made though...thank you very much for sharing and taking your time to make the video =) I send you many regards from Argentina hope you are well and safe! =)
Fantastic tutorial. So easy to follow, step by step instructions, excellent closeups and a very friendly voice. I must find the beginning of the toe tutorial and start my sock, hoping to have two of the same size, length and with the exact measurements from the beginning to the end!!! I wish viewers just said "thankyou" for your tutorial. Thanks for sharing. Hugs. xxx
Thanks so much for your comments.
Bloomingknitter hi were can ai buy your pattern
Great video thanks. Always wondered how to do a heel flap when you do toe up socks.
Love the yarn!
Very well explained! My go to video for sure!
This is brilliant! I need to knit a pair of toe up socks and try it out. Thank you! BTW I love your accent!
excellent tutorial. You explained everything plainly with good visuals. Subscribed and sure to be a follower
Awesome 👍🏾 thank you 🌻🤗
Great video, thank you. I finally have a pair of socks that fit my wide feet, high instep and cankles :) x
I really like your videos. Thanks
Barbara Davi Hi Barbara, thanks for letting me know.
What a great tutorial! Thank you!!!
Can this method be used for a contrasting heel and are there written instructions for this. Thanks for your help!
Excellent video, thank you! How would I do this if I'm doing two at a time?
OMG you help me a lot. Knitting at your side, marvelous.
Thank you very much.
Great instructions thank you so very much!
This is a nice rounded toe (my preference). I am knitting a pair of cashmere socks for my sister Glow. I always come back
to Your precise videos. How are You Tina. Miss You and Wishing You and Your family LOVE>
excellent tutorial.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! You rock!
Enjoyed your video, thank you.
Thank you for your video it's been very helpful.
Cute kitty 🐱
I say acrost too, drives my husband crasy, don't worry you are in good company.
Sounds very strange to my Swedish ears..... 😅
Thank you so much for your great video. I have been looking for a toe up sock with heel flap and gusset. My question is can you do the same slip one knit one for the heel flap and continue it on the heel turn so that you have extra thick fabric for the bottom of the foot? Thanks
i'm new to knitting socks and came across your tutorial on heel flap & gusset on toe up sock. will you be writing up a pattern on this tutorial anytime soon? following along with written instructions would make it so much easier for us senior citizens. Love your tutorials. Thankx.
Laurie Lee Laurie, there is a possibility that I will write this up, but it won't be until after the first of the year, and it might have to wait until May next year.
Success!!! I have finished this part of sock #1!! Not perfect, but I did it!!!! LOL This tutorial was very well done, Tina!! Thank you!!
Did you end up doing a 3rd part for the leg and cuff part? I am not seeing it in your videos. I know how to finish, I just wanted to see your finish! LOL
Thanks again for making such great tutorials!
God Bless,
Shannon
Shannon L Fowler I don't remember if I did a leg cuff part to this particular tutorial. There isn't anything special about the leg, just knit or follow your pattern. Then do some sort of ribbing at the top. I almost always use Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-off for my socks.
What I meant was that your presentation here is perfect for leg-down socks. For toe-up socks, - if my understanding of the term 'toe-up' is correct - you start knitting at the toe-end, right? Consequently, you would have to begin with the smaller part of the heel. Meaning, half of all the stitches, including the gusset increases, are on you heel needle. And that's where a formula is needed... You'll find it by googling and rest assured, it works,I tried it out.
knit now I actually have a cuff down tutorial with heel flap and gusset also, but the way this is done you start with the heel flap on the bottom of the foot and then pick up stitches for the gusset. There are many ways to do this, this tutorial is just one of them.
Thank you for the tutorial. I don’t want to make toe up because I like the cushion on my heel, so this will work well.
I am curious, I have learned that you should be knitting socks in a smaller, tighter gauge for a firm fabric to reduce wear. Your gauge is rather loose, do you have issues from friction or any signs of premature wear?
Hey did you get the dog that you said you are calling for???
After watching your video again, I came to the conclusion that the gusset comes first then the heel then the heel flap then the leg or cuff. This way the heel flap will be on the correct end of the heel and not under it.
This is the first time I've come across 'slipping the LAST stitch, then knitting it after turning work. It would have been interesting to here your reasoning for doing it that way. Thanks anyway
Do you have the written pattern for these socks? I really like your video!!
This is by far the best heel pattern that i have used. I love the look of the heel flap but cannot knit a sock top down. So happy to have found one for toe up socks!! I was wondering if by any chance that you have the written instructions to accompany the video as sometimes I cannot get videos to load when i am mobile.
keep for book mark
I feel the same way; I prefer knitting socks toe-up so was SO glad to find this video. This has helped so much!
Where can I buy this pattern for this heel?
greate tutorial. I just want to ask you what yarn you have used for this socks.thanx
Where is the pattern for this toe up sock? I would like to do a toe up with the heel gusset and flap. Thank you for your video tutorials. They explain the process very well.
I enjoyed this tutorial. I have been using the Fleegle Heel, but would like to take it up a notch. During the tutorial you disappeared from the screen. I wonder if you have printed instructions of the same.
I am watching the heel flap and gusset, do you follow what you do even if your amount on the needle is less than the stitches you have. I am doing 64 so I would have 32 and half way would be 16.
Thanks for these great instructions! However, I am knitting 2 at a time toe up magic loop and I got to the gusset pick up stitches and then when it came time to knit across the instep (front), I couldn't because I couldn't position my needles with the second sock on there. I think at a certain point I must knit the heels, gusset ? of both socks at the same time? Please advise when and how I can proceed without taking the other sock completely off the magic loop!!
Hi. I need help.
I first knit one at a time toe up GSR heel socks on one 9” circular. And then knit Two at a time toe up socks on one long circular using Magic Loop
Now I’ve bought two sets of the same size tips (2.5) and two 14” cables so I can knit Two at a time; Toe up socks; using Judy’s Magic Cast On.
But on Two Circulars.
I found Magic Loop really annoying
I can’t find a sock pattern or tutorial for that combination. I’ve been searching and searching but can’t seem to find anything exact.
Can you direct me to a pattern with video tutorial (I’m a see-do learner)?
Thank you 🙏
I have a question if I have 32 stitches do I knit 32 rows for the heel for the toe up socks? Kathy
hi bloom knitter. This is Matt. I love your video and I killed all my frustrations about knitting socks thanks to your video. it's so clear and nicely done. Quick question thought right after you pick up all the side stitches you mention that the K2Tog and SSK decreases gotta be done every other row. I checked several other patterns of cuff down socks and they have you do the decreases on every row and that created a decorative line all the way down to the instep. Is the difference of your instruction and the others bc yours is toe up on magic loop? second if I decrease every other row wouldn't I have a very long instep until I get to my original # of stitches to knit up my cuff? thank u so much for ur time. I love what u do Tina.
Don't know if anyone has asked this or not. Can you do the reinforced stitching on the bottom of the heel or will that change the length?
What size of needle you used
I am doing a sock which I cast on 60 sts, to do the heel turn how do I start? Ty
What is the name of the blanket that your cat was on?
If I had a pattern on my sock, the stitches on needle 1 facing you, how would I go about starting the heel flap
Hi, thanks for making this amazing tutoring video.
I am wondering if this can also apply to the "knit two at once"? I always knit two socks at one time so that i don't need to worry they are different.
You can make two at a time... Magic loop is one way or using just DPNs and the socks are made one inside another... Stitches are made by alternating the yarn for each stitch. Just type 2 sock at a time and vids will pull up and guide you. Good luck!
Ugh.. Totally read your message wrong.. I'm sorry!
Chi Liu I have only done two-at-a-time once, and it just wasn't my cup of tea. I would think that if you already know how to do two-at-a-time socks then you would easily be able to apply the concept to this technique. If I get adventurous I will definitely do a two-at-a-time video. Thanks for the suggestion.
PrettyDarnRadYT Now that is something that I would like to try at some point, two-at-a-time on DPN. I can't say that I would enjoy it, because as much as I love to watch other people knit on DPNs they are not my favorite. But I think it would be a fun thing to learn.
Where do I get the written instructions? This is a great tutorial. Thank you very much
Shelia Wilson I don't have written instructions for this tutorial, but I have been asked several times, so I might time some time in the coming months to write them up. Thanks for asking.
I'm knitting socks where the gusset is done first and then the heel flap and turn done later. Could you do a video using this technique?
Wow merci je peut l.avoir en francais svp
How to get the pattern?
me encanta el video pero no puedo ver como de hace ka disminución izquierda del talon y caña gracias
I know this is a very old video, but a good one. Unfortunately I don't see the pattern for this type of heel on your ravelry site. The only one I see is the toe up with wraps. I don't see one with the instructions you use here. You don't wrap anything in this video.
Great tutorial! Approximately how many inches do you knit before starting the flap?
Caroline Conte-Chouinard That would vary depending on the length of your foot.
Caroline Conte-Chouinard I have plans to write up some general instructions on how to calculate this and hope to have it posted on Ravelry in the next few weeks.
ciao sei bravissima - purtroppo non so la lingua come si possono avere le spiegazioni di un modello base adulto e neonato in italiano grazie mille Silvana Italia
This is just an alternative way to build a heel and yes, the heel is still a heel even if on the bottom of the foot.
I wish you would have mentioned when to start the heel flap.
She did
What kind of needles are you using? I'm trying to find a brand that suits me, and those look really nice.
try the addi turbo lace they're the best there is
Clear but I wish you had provided some sort of placement calculation, for instance “...for a 9 inch sock begin ‘x’ inches before total foot length...”
I saw a youtuber her channel is called very pink knits and her name is Stacie Perry you and her hold your yarn in that kind of loop
Clear as mud
Am I right? It's about the same as if you start knitting your sock the "normal" way round? The only difference I see is your pattern at the heel, which I never did when coming down the sock. So I guess I can knitt it as usually and it just looks upside down?
schteff79 Yep!
You are dead right, it is upside down, maybe serves the purpose as well. However, it must be possible to do toe up in the reverse order. Anyway, I'll give it a try
knit now Not all patterns can easily be reversed to go in the other direction, but with most patterns it won't matter if they are upside down or now.
I'm confused. On a top down sock the heel flap in on the top of the heel before the ribbing. On this sock it looks like the heel flap is on the bottom of the sock before the heel turn. I want to make a pair of socks with the heel flap at the top of the heel so I can do decorative stitches on the heel flap. I am very confused.
Sonia Guzman That is correct, in this pattern the heel flap is on the bottom of the foot. Look for my other tutorial for top down to have the heel flap on the back of the leg.
Bloomingknitter Is it possible to have a heel flap on the back of the leg with a toe up sock?
Do you decrease every second row?
Thanks
Thank you so much for this video, could you please tell me where I can find a written pattern of this heel, just easier for an older person ;)
***** I haven't written up this pattern, but the book Sensational Socks has a similar construction.
Not working for child sock 14 stitches.I understand i have to add 1 more stitch in the middle it's not working, Thanks Anyway.🤦
This Heel flap is backwards, This is in error!
Toe up socks don't always look the same as top down. Not necessarily an "error!" - just looks different. Every reinforced heel and heel flap I've done whether toe up or top down differs according to designer and teacher. Some have a reinforced heel including the bottom of the foot, while some just have the top part of the flap. Doesn't make it wrong. Just different. Also, the pattern of the yarn makes it appear "off" with the rest of the sock's patterning.
I found this video kind of confusing. You were out of frame through a lot of the video, especially after the heel turn. It would have been helpful to have a closer and slower view of what you were doing when you started new things, like picking up the new stitches. I also wasn’t even sure if this was the next video in the series because you changed yarns from the first video. Just some constructive criticism from a beginner. I thought the first video was good (starting the toe). This one didn’t work as well for me. I do wish that I could knit as quickly and effortlessly as you!
I can’t watch this anymore, it's ACROSS, what does acrost mean??
Wait! Your heel flap is on the wrong side of the heel! A heel flap is on the back of the sock and just before the cuff not Under the sock. This cannot be called a heel flap when it is On the bottom of the foot!
But it works and it's a flap standing on the head
Unfortunately, in watching your instructions step by step, I had completed the entire 36 rows of knitting (of a 72 stitch sock) to complete your version of the heel flap. Then you commented that if you have an even number of stitches you should leave that extra stitch on the instep. Sorry, just constructive criticism.
