  • Versatile, comfortable, and fun - the Roofnest Sandpiper ticked the right boxes for a rooftop tent. And, to my surprise, it also proved the perfect sanctuary from a curious bear.
I was never more happy to be in a rooftop tent than when a bear crawled in beneath it while I was sleeping. I was solo camping in Colorado's Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forest, about 10 miles south of the Wyoming border. My favorite camp spot resides there, and while it's not a secret, you need a keen eye, plenty of ground clearance, and some good karma to reach it.

Great review! Super informative and super concise. By the way, how'd you install those lights inside?

    Would love to see roofnest
    sacrafice one of these sweet
Tents. Windows closed on an open road for a 35 mph wind test.
Just curious george how well it would hold up on a windy night.
    Thanks for the walk through👍

Great overview. So have you used it yet in a rain storm with wind and sideways rain? Do you stay dry inside? Thanks.

Could you mount it directly to the truck bed rails without a rack?

discontinued. newer version has solar panel option for the roof of the tent instead of extra bars

can't believe the ladder wasn't a drawback for you. they lost me at "ladder". i have to say, fun idea and nice engineering (the spring assisted raise was smart) BUT i would rate this low on safety and stealthiness. i would recommend safer and cheaper interior mods or conversions. my two cents.

Interesting take. So my wife and I went through this whole exercise of deciding on the RoofNest or the Ursa Minor. The Ursa Minor is a beautifully done conversion at a relatively reasonable price. We are in our early 60's. Since you have to pull yourself up onto the Ursa Minor, we opted for the RoofNest as we thought it would be easier for two old people to do vs. having to hoist ourselves up. It was really a hard decision as both the Ursa Minor and RoofNest are nice designs and engineered well. It comes down to what you are comfortable with.
