  • A quick tutorial on how to perform the dime test for both, KitchenAid® tilt head as well as bowl lift stand mixers.
The dime test lets you adjust the distance between the bottom of your bowl and the beater.
Join me on this quick how to video, and you will be able to perform the dime test without any issues.

Hey Dennis, Thanks for this video even if it is older. I bought a K5SS Hobart mixer and search through every info online to restore, paint, fix and adjust it. You came up with the dime test.
LOVE your name Baverican. So great. As a Hessican (German from Frankfurt immigrated to the US 24 years ago) I appreciate this clever wordplay.

Oh my gosh! Ever since I got this mixer (maybe 20 years ago!) I’ve thought the beater was too high but didn’t know it was adjustable, or how. Wasn’t even looking for this and it popped up. Thank you SO much!

Thank you so much for this tutorial! The neck pin of my kitchenaid came out and after i fixed the neck pin, i noticed the beater was hitting the bowl. Your video helped me fix the height for my tilt head mixer. Thanks a lot!

I've got an older KSM5 bowl lift mixer but it doesn't have that adjustment screw... I was told it's about 30 years old and by your dime test it's still in perfect adjustment...

It's true of the older Hobart bowl lift mixers similar to yours not have a beater hight adjustment. Your adjustment screw (if equipped) is located under the near the top of the neck just above the top of the bowl lift mechanism. It's vertically mounted loosening it just changes how high the bowl can raise by resting against the top of the bowl lift mechanism.

Help please. The adjustment screw seems to freely turn, like with your finger tip. It does apparently accomplish some adjustment but I'm worried something is not right. Can anyone advise? I would link a setting screw like this should be a bit stiff to turn. --Thanks (PS this is a brand new machine of the smaller variety)

I can't turn the screw any further to lower it, does this mean it's adjusted as far as it can be? I got it as a refurbished model for Christmas.

I've put two rubber washers on the bowl holder pins and this corrected the exaggerated space (was over a nickel's width) sufficiently to move the dime.

The rubber washers are the exact thing I was looking for!!! I turned the screw but it wasn’t quite enough. Thanks!

Did you ever resolve this? Dealing with this right now

I know he said to turn it to the right to lower it and left to raise it, but mine was the exact opposite. After trying to turn that screw thinking it was just frozen solid, I tried turning it counterclockwise and voila! Moved no problem and that lowered it to where I needed it to be. But, my mixer has always made crazy racquetty sounds, so maybe it just wasn’t assembled correctly in the first place. Regardless, the beater is adjusted perfectly now!!
