    My wife started out with a tilt head. I got her the Professional 6 for Mother's Day. The tilt head finally conked out. I had planned getting a new tilt head to compliment her Professional 6, but I walked into an estate sale and found a brand new Professional 5 for $125.00

    We bought both, the bowl-lift for heavy doughs, the tilt-head for smaller amounts. It's a luxury, but we cook a lot and we don't go on vacation. :-)

    • @BruceBoschek
      @BruceBoschek 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@julietteyork3721 That's a difficult call. I guess it would depend upon how you plan to use it. We had the bowl-lift machine first and thought that it would be good to have one with smaller bowls. Even with the newer wiper blades you have to stop the machine and wipe down the bowl with a rubber spatula now and then. As it turns out, the tilt-head machine is not that much of an improvement in that regard. The only real difference is the availability of glass bowls for the tilt-head machine. If you shop around the price difference is also minimal. Thinking about it, I would probably prefer the bowl-lift machine. Either way, you cannot go wrong. Both machines will serve you well, I'm sure.

      Thanks for sharing, Bruce. Like Juliette, I am unsure. I like the idea of mixer that can handle anything I throw at it now and in 5 years time. Right now it's me and my partner. . So right this moment am favouring the Bow lift. It's size does not concern me. I dont my storing it in the floor cabinet (or is it crazy heavy?) My concern about it is its ability to deal with small quantity. You seem to suggest it struggle like Amy says? I like the convenience of the tilt head but am worried the shaking of the head will shorten its life span or that it struggle to make larger amount. You have both so are the ideal person to ask! Please help! (and stay safe in these crazy times!). Thanks Greetings from London, UK.

      Just a sec - I had a bowl lift as my first mixer. I loved it and used it for years and years! My kids grew up on it, and there was nothing it couldn’t do. It was too big for storing on my counter and so I stored it underneath in a cabinet. It was heavy and a pain in the rear to lift up all the time and put it away. It finally broke (it is fixable but I haven’t done that yet-lol) but I was in the middle of a move and I was gifted a new mixer as a housewarming gift. I chose the artisan mixer. Now it sits out on my counter and I use it ALL THE TIME because it is right in front of me! I love seeing it on m y counter because it just makes me happy :). I now use it for more than just baking too. Don’t get me wrong, I still use it to mix cookie and cakes batter and I also knead dough in the artisan and the smaller mixer does fine with regular bread dough. I am also more apt to use the attachments i have, use it for mixing meatloaf, or shredding cooked chicken or even massaging kale for a salad. So maybe this will help you make up your mind. They are both great you will be happy with either. They are just different!

    I've heard that you can't always go by the watts, it's the torque that determines the power. I saw your pan room tour yesterday and was really surprised to see that white bowl-lift mixer on the top shelf considering how heavy they are! If I stored one above my head, I would never use it. My aunt had a special cabinet for hers that lifted up and out to counter level--this was in the 70's and I was in awe because our family was lucky to have a Sunbeam. I have the Pro 600 and hate that noise as well. The 4.5 quart tilt-head really is best for most jobs. Mine is almost 30 years old and works great.

  • @mikesavoie4414
    @mikesavoie4414 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I grew up on the artisan tilt head using it often because it fit right under the counter and was so quick to use, “but” my mother never made homemade bread or stiff doughs, but lots of meringues, cookies and homemade cakes etc. It was very easy to add ingredients and remove the messy paddle. It also was white and never showed the dust of flour on it. I grew up and got a tall pro version in beautiful cobalt blue and it shows every speck of flour on it every time I use it for such and have to totally clean it each time. It was very hard to put on and off the bowl until I got used to it and now I can do it quickly, but I still struggle putting on and off the mixing paddle looking straight down without the tilt angle. It does take up more space, but I love that it is a work horse for stiff doughs. I also love using the very quick batch cheese shredder and or butter shredder attachment. I read that using the tilt version often for stiff doughs can damage eventually the joint of the tilt back version, but not the stationary taller version. My mother had her artesian tilt version around 40-50 years but did not bake homemade bread or rarely made stiff sugar cookie dough. So, it depends on if you are doing many meringues and very rarely stiff bread doughs really, or you are really into making stiff sugar cookie dough and bread dough often enough that it warrants the stronger motor and non-movable head. Having both would be nice but you do have to have the room for it. If I were doing it all over again, I would get white because I don’t remember my mother’s having to be swabbed down for every speck of flour each time of use. The colors are pretty, but definitely more upkeep to keep gleamingly pretty after each use. They are making a more comfortable handle now on the taller versions, that mine does not have. Besides the attachments, they do offer for more money, an optional smaller bowl/shorter whisk combo especially made for the pro line series for those who need to whisk meringues or smaller batches, which I plan to get.

    I have both a tilt head and a bowl lift. I owned a tilt head for 20 years and decided to upgrade to a bowl lift. My tilt head is still going strong! I will say it took me a while to get use to the bowl lift. It wasn't hard but it was different. I loved the power and the bigger bowl. Love the video, it can def help someone make a difficult decision when it comes to choosing a KA mixer. No matter which KA is chosen, you will not be disappointed. Oh, and I agree there is nothing wrong with a refurbished KA. My first Kitchen Aid mixer was a soft pink tilt head and it was refurbished. That was 20 years ago, it saved me money and hasn't died on me yet.

    I just upgraded from a tilt classic to a bowl lift pro 5. I find the bowl lift is much more stable when kneading dough. I actually stripped out the bowl making pizza dough on the tilt once and had to replace the bowl. Also the spiral dough hooks works much better the the C hook on the tilt. I find it pushes the dough down to the bowl instead of climbing the hook.

    • @07chancemoore
      @07chancemoore 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Thommadura
      @Thommadura ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@njuhmbunwe6701 IF the Dough you are mixing is VERY STIFF - virtually ALL home mixers will shake a lot. The Tilt Heads will actually shake even more and they are LESS powerful than a Bowl Lift as well. REALLY heavy floor based Commercial Mixers sometimes have problems with Stiff doughs as well.

    I've have KitchenAid for 40 years. I actually bought one of the bowl lift mixers because of the amount of dough involved in a recipe. I didn't want the bowl to spin around when I had heavier bread or pizza recipes. HOWEVER, I returned the bowl lift, because A) I'm a one person household; B) the recipes I make (now) don't require a lot of dough; and C) for the reason Amy stated early on, the amount of room that you have to add ingredients, and also to add/remove the attachments, when you lift the tilt-head vs the tilt-head. Plus, easier to use the tilt-head than struggle with getting the bowl into the frame for "bowl-lift" version.

    I just discovered your channel and love it! This video was VERY helpful in my decision, as was your comparison video with the Hamilton Beach mixer, so thank you for that. I'm trying to upgrade from my (very old, original early 80s) Sunbeam Oster! Lol. Never used, but always wanted a Kitchenaid. Quick question...... can bowl sizes be interchanged with the tilt head mixers? Meaning, if I get a 4.5qt for every day use, but need a 6qt once in a while, can I use it with that mixer?

      Why is your Grandmother's mixer being kept in the garage? Over time the grease becomes like varnish and freezes up the beater shafts. Is the mixer showing some "scars" showing its age? for a price you can have it restored to have it looking ad working like new! Becoming something you have on your counter with pride.

    I just bought the Pro 6qt refurbished and got it for a song. I've wanted one all my life. When my mom passed family members came in and they took what they wanted. One thing they took was my mom's KitchenAid stand mixer. My mom was quite the baker. I learned to bake next to my mom. I quit baking. I'm 66yo now and my granddaughter asked me for a recipe and how to bake a cake. I started baking again after all these years. One day it'll be hers just like my Corningware sets. I just bought her her first recipe cards set and box and sent her some of my faves. A mixer for me is spending a day in the kitchen with my granddaughter baking goodies.

  • @janesmith7823

    My pro 5 bowl lift mixer fits just perfect under my cabinets...that was a major deciding factor for me. I wanted to be able to store it and use it without pulling it out due to the tilt head. I also read over time due to the weight of the motor in the tilt head that it can become loose and wobbly and can impair some of the functionality of the speeds. I also wanted the higher wattage so the motor wouldn't burn out over time. That being said the tilt head is nice for additional ingredients I just think overall storage/usage/longevity the bowl lift is best for me! Happy baking!!

    Hi Amy! Your videos are awesome. So helpful. I am trying to decide between the Wolf 7qt Stand Mixer and the KA KSM7586PSR Pro Line 7 qt Bowl Lift Stand Mixer. I would prefer a tilt head but want a large capacity, so I have to get a bowl lift. In our family, we bake all the time, sometimes 2-3 times a day. This necessitates a mixer that can withstand a lot of use. We really want something that doesn’t shake on the counter when kneading bread dough. With our current KA, we use an extra bowl and extra paddle attachment quite often. Both mixers have good warranties. The downsides of the Wolf seem to be: heavy, expensive, and has limited accessories (no pasta maker, etc). The cost of an extra bowl is super expensive, over $200. I called Wolf and they said they will be selling a paddle attachment on their site later this year, but that will also be very expensive. As far as the motor, the Wolf seems more powerful but not according to the wattage listed. The Wolf is 500 watts and the KA is 969 watts. Is it easier to get the bowl in and out on the Wolf? Any other thoughts about these two?
