    What a truly excellent video - thank you! Very clearly explained and easy to follow (and infinitely more helpful than the official Kitchenaid video). For anyone in the UK, a 5p coin is the closest to a dime 😊

    Great video with clear audible and visual guide. I can remember righty tighty - lowering the beater to make it closer to the bowl, and lefty loosey, to raise the beater. I just received my 5 qt Artisan stand mixer so I'm going to try the dime test for the fun of it.

    THANK YOU!!! I thought that I was going to have to buy a new mixer, because the head of mine was flopping all over the place, and would not lock. It did destroy the lower end of the paddle, which I have just replaced. I really appreciate your clear and concise instructions. You helped save a mixer. Much appreciated!!

    I just got a secondhand Classic Mixer, and have been learning as much as I can on how to use it outside of the normal off and on function😂. Thanks to this video I just did the dime test and it was way too high by almost 1 1/2 turns. For those performing this maintenance at home a 1/4 of a turn may actually be too much. On the last adjustment I ended up needing to readjust the it back up by 1/8th of a turn. Thanks for the video.

    When unplugging always remember to grasp the plug and not simply the cord... Unless you want to fray the wires inside the cord and cause a short- circuit and possible electrocution.

    Awesome, thank you so much for posting this!!
    I was being very handy one day and saw the adjustment screw was not flush with the unit, and not knowing it's purpose, I screwed it tight and put the machine away. Then a couple of weeks later we pulled it out and the beater was completely hitting the sides and bouncing around. I was bummed that something was loose on this great mixer, but I couldn't figure it out.
    So now I'm excited and looking forward to mixing up some yummy food! Thanks!

    For the europeans: 1/16 inch is 1,6mm. 1ct and 2ct and 5ct coins are all equally 1,67mm in height, so any will work. In fact, the dime has a height of 1,35mm, so the ct should work better ;)

    • @sashineb.2114
      @sashineb.2114 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've seen videos where the paddle falls off because they don't use the spring system any more. They say it's not necessary, but if that's so, then why was it on the machines for decades? My mixer is from 1989 and has it. It was built with Hobart specs so still runs beautifully. Not sure what I will buy if this one dies, though. Definitely not KA.

  • @luzquiroz1869
    @luzquiroz1869 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    1. The amount this allows you to raise up or down is VERY limited, maybe a 1/4 inch. 2. The paddle is longer than the dough hook and this adjustment doesn't really help the fact the dough hook is still nearly a 1/2 inch from the bottom of the bowl.

  • @luke9822
    @luke9822 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    My lift bowl mixer has the opposite adjustments. Left drops the mixer (raises the bowl), and right raisers the mixer (lowers the bowl). There's also only a half turn of total adjustment in my mixer, and I was never able to drop the mixer enough to make the dime dance (just barely touches it now, whereas before it didn't come close to touching it).

    My brand new kitchenaid 5qt artisan arrived about 2 weeks ago. I ASSumed this was good to start using, only raising suspicions when beat egg whites to find some sugar always sinking at the bottom of bowl. Then when I knead dough at level 2, the beater head would move up and down and unlocks the level. So I tried the dime test, and I had to turn the screw almost 360 degrees to get the dime to move a little bit every 2 turns or so. Here’s hoping I didn’t receive an used/returned mixer from the store and that this fixes the dough beating issue - really the only reason I bought this expensive mixer for!!!

  • @JN-eb9vf

    In the video the head lock on the right side of the machine is not engaged. I have been playing with the adjustment screw to get the lock to engage enough to secure the head. My machine is pretty new, used it only a couple of times. The head was jumping rather violently when I was working on a bread dough. So violently that the lock lever moved and disengaged the lock. This should not happen on a new machine! I discovered the adjustment screw on my own and was able to see how it worked but in doing so some paint chipped off the dough blade and is now in the dough. I grew up with a KitchenAid mixer and don't recall it ever being a problem. I am not so thrilled with my new machine after this experience.

    I was disappointed to see how the woman yanked the cord out of the wall outlet by pulling the cord instead of grabbing the plug at 1:43. Most folks know to always disconnect appliances by pulling out the plug.

    • @erikacallahan2824

      I keep trying to emphasize that with my mother when she uses her phone charger, but inevitably every time I witness it, she simply grabs the cord and yanks. Ugh. I'm not buying her any more USB charger cords for her until she learns to use them correctly. As she is untechnical and bed bound, she cannot go out and buy her own. But I agree with the OP that it is annoying to see the cord abuse in this video.

    • @erikacallahan2824
      @erikacallahan2824 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bridget M it can pull the wires in the interior of the cord away from the connectors rendering the appliance unusable or even dangerous due to potentially electrical arc and/or fires.

This is how I solved my issue of the bottom of the beater hitting the bowl AND the mixer head bouncing up and down. I have adjusted the hinge pin and was still having this issue. Going counter-clockwise until the lock didn't work and then working my way clockwise in counter turns until the dime moved like in this video.

      Be sure you have put the bowl in the raised position using the bowl lift handle each time you adjust the screw. For mine mixer I had to turn the screw to the left (counter-clockwise) in order to make the beater to lower. Maybe it’s just my year model. I hope this helps someone else who is confused.

    i just recently purchaed a 6qt bow lift and no matter how many times i turn the screw the coin still wont move

  • @tanguerochas
    @tanguerochas 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When I try this the dime will not move even with the bowl lift set to the highest setting. This is with a Professional 600 bowl lift mixer with a glass bowl.

      +tanguerochas I have the same problem with the 6-quart bowl-left mixer, with both the glass and stainless steel bowl.

    • @tanguerochas
      @tanguerochas 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +pazetbonum I had a chat with the Kitchenaid rep. She told me that my mixer is designed to be more than that off the bowl. No explanation of why.

      +tanguerochas Mine is the same way. I tried to mix dough and the dough hook is to high off the bottom. The dime doesnt move with the flat beater

      +tanguerochas +"Valerie Hofmann" Separately I had bought the stainless steel bowl for the 6-quart mixer, and using the beater that came with the glass bowl ("F" series), still couldn't get the dime to move. I spoke on the phone at length with a Kitchenaid rep, and ordered a beater that is supposed to work with the stainless bowl, and when it arrived, it moved the dime in the stainless bowl just like in the video. I haven't tried the new beater with the glass bowl, afraid it might scratch or break it, but the bottom line is that you need the stainless bowl with the matching beater to properly mix small quantities using the 6-quart mixer.

    Can you help me? I cant find a fix anywhere. There is a stainless steel band above the beater shaft where you attach dough hook, whisk etc. It fell off this morning. I have cleaned it, it is not damaged, but it doesnt seem to clip back on. Is there a technique? It appears to be cosmetic, but would also stop any mixture getting into small apertures beneath motor head. The stainless steel collar i am writing about is not a mentioned part in the manual, but it is the only collar below the motor head. I have contacted after sales service....they say they cant advise for liability reasons!

    I tried using this method to adjust my mixer, but had a problem. If I adjust the head tilt screw enough to lock the head all the way, the beater hits the bottom of the bowl. If I adjust the screw to make the dime move as shown, then the head doesn't lock and wobbles up and down. Is there another adjustment for the head tilt?

    • @thomasfox9651
      @thomasfox9651 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exact same problem here. As soon as I adjust the screw just enough to make the beater stop scraping the bottom of the bowl, it will no longer lock. When I adjust it enough to lock, its back to scraping.

      @@thomasfox9651 Just had this exact same problem using the dime for adjustment. Had to remove the dime and turn the screw another quarter turn to lower the beater just a tad more so the lock will lock in place. No more room for adjustment, but that worked and the beater is about 1/32" off the bottom of the bowl still and not scraping.

    This is absolutely ridiculous. I’m returning ours out of principle. We’ve gone through 3 of the beaters because of pour clearance within one use each. Put the damn spring back in the machine.
