I always learn something from your comments!
    1) If you are in Europe, KitchenAid is insanely overprices. The prices you guys mentioned are ridiculous. If I lived in Europe, I would definitely get a Kenwood. It's the opposite in the US. Kenwood would cost me twice as much as KitchenAid Pro (given that I got mine on sale).
    2) The smell I was getting in the beginning is NOT the motor threatening to burn out. It's the protective grease in the gearbox getting "burned in". When the grease is heated by friction for the first few times, it becomes "baked" onto the gears similar to seasoning a cast iron skillet. Thank you to Gerard Johnson and BostonClipper for this info!

Organic oils polymerize. - The grease used in your mixer doesn't. It's more likely that the loose excess grease gets aerosolized on initial use.

Kitchenaid Pro has an optional small (3 qt(?)) bowl with whipping attachments for whipping small things. Works well on 2 eggs!

  • @BostonClipper

The "weird smell" is grease, not a poorly designed motor. Shipping and wide-ranging warehouse temperatures can cause grease to move until it gets to your home. Kitchenaid is protecting the mixer and your investment with enough grease. It would be easier and cheaper to use less grease to avoid complaints but your motor would be vulnerable.
You absolutely right Kitchenaid failed to adequately document the adjustment screw, not everyone reads the manual. It is great there is a fine adjustment screw to keep the mixer in the perfect position after shipping jostles, possible drops, and eventual wear. A sticker with a big red arrow should be adhered to a new mixer with "THIS MIXER MUST BE ADJUSTED (see manual)".

    • @MissTEO1
      @MissTEO1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. A better gauge of whether there is something wrong with your mixer is the noise. If it seems to be getting louder than you remember it being, (my Kitchenaid Pro did this after about 6 years of very seldom use), you probably need to open it up, wipe away the old grease (mine had dried up) and regrease it with new food grade grease. There are several helpful videos on here showing you how to do this and on which grease to get. Just make sure to order the right gasket for your particular Kitchenaid model, which you MUST replace if you ever open it up. As long as you pick the right gasket for your model and wipe out old grease before adding new, it’s a pretty simple and quick project.

Same holds for motorcycle engines and shotguns. Quality metal goods arrive in a film of oil for protection, and the occasional relubrication is good maintenance.

    • @EarlHayward
      @EarlHayward ปีที่แล้ว

Sorry… Saying “KitchenAid failed to adequately document the adjustment screw, [because] not everyone reads the manual…” is contradictory; and is the problem itself! When I read your comment, I felt the same way as when I read a review giving one star out of five because a product arrived damaged/broken due to shipping… Seriously, how is the damage in transit related to the product quality? Similarly, how is it poor documentation when people fail to read the instruction manual? Even the woman in this channel was saying, why wasn’t there a big warning sticker… In other words, what she meant was, I (as are many other people) am not going to read the instruction manual, so put a big warning sticker of the appliance for us lazy people! It also reminds me of why every time I purchased a vehicle they wanted to “help me” with maintenance, in part was to sell their service, but also because some people do not know they need to change their oil on their vehicle (not because the auto manufacturer didn’t document it, but because they would never read the manual)!!!

    • @BostonClipper
      @BostonClipper ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@EarlHayward Not everyone has the time to read all the documentation. Some people find, in their minds better things to do with their limited time. Some people are intimated by technical information. Everyone is different, we should celebrate our differences rather than lament everyone does not see the world the way we do (I read the manuals). How boring the world would be if everyone was the same. Show grace... your life will be better.
This is a common problem. KitchenAid may consider a small sticker near the screw saying "Important Adjustment"... to create intrigued :)
The equation for KitchenAid is simple. The cost of placing a small sticker vs. the "goodwill" to protect the brand KichenAid.

Not an expert here but this is what I discovered. The old KitchenAid mixers made by Hobart up to the mid-70’s are far superior in terms of torque, and gear assembly construction using all metal gears. These Hobart-built machines are the ones that gave KitchenAid their superb record of performance and longevity lasting literally generations.
Hobart sold their KitchenAid Division I think in 1974 and immediately the gear assembly was redesigned using some plastic gear elements. This may have been a safety concern at the time because the old Hobart mixers don’t stop mixing and can break a finger or two if not out of the way of the beater. But this also explains why the new models fail and burn out. Often.
Long story short, after my KitchenAid Pro burned out a second time even with a correctly calibrated bowl, I found an old Hobart KitchenAid K5-A mixer at Goodwill for $75.00 with multiple attachments. Immediately upon starting it up I could tell a difference. The motor is much quieter, and the torque significantly better despite lower wattage compared to my KitchenAid Pro costing 10 times more, even though the machine at the time I found it was 30 or so years old.
Frankly, there is no comparison between the old Hobart KitchenAid models and the current KitchenAid models. Every task is performed more efficiently and more quickly with my now 40+ year old Hobart KitchenAid K5-A than with my newer KitchenAid Pro which I threw out.
Even the vintage attachments are better, though somewhat dangerous and not for the faint of heart-a Pelican-style slicer attachment no longer made is simply superb for thinly and uniformly slicing mountains of vegetables. A thick walled solid copper bowl insert was made for the stainless steel bowl that allows egg whites to be whipped 1/3 higher with more stability than in the stainless steel bowl. The volume achieved is actually shocking. The meat grinder is solid metal so that it can be placed in the freezer allowing significantly better grinding of meats for sausages. There’s even a real churning ice cream maker attachment that uses ice and rock salt to churn perfect ice cream.
Check out Craigslist, Goodwill, or Ebay and spend a fraction of the money for a 40+ year old marvel of a machine that far out performs and outlasts what is made today.
I wouldn’t believe it myself until I saw it with my own eyes. Unbelievable.
    Steve K.

I have had a KA Pro 500 for many years. Great machine and cheaper than the 600. It also had a smell in the beginning. As an electrician for 50y I don't believe the smell was electrical. I think it was the new grease in the gearbox getting "burned in". When the grease is heated by friction for the first few times it becomes "baked" onto the gears similar to seasoning a cast iron skillet. But take heed, using the mixer at too high of a speed for the task will wear down the gears necessitating a rebuild. You can do it yourself but it's no fun and big messy. Ask me how I know.

Yes I agree with your comments. Today is my first attempt at dough, and dinner rolls made with the new $250 Pro. They are proofing as I watch this video. I started bad because I began with dry in the bowl bottom. It did not come together. I was thinking the paddle would work have better. After watching you, next time, I will follow your advice with the wet on the bottom, or use the paddle. Today I found myself increasing the speed to "3" and adding a little flour to get me to goal. Well I just peaked and the dinner rolls are rising. A small miracle for a male who had never done more than watch his mother use her 1960's model Kitchen Aid Tilt Head. Thanks for your very informative video! You gave excellent advice which was almost as good as mom. cr

I bought a 7 Quart Pro-line limited edition Copper one last year. Paid over one thousand at William Sonoma and since day one I experienced every single problem you mentioned in this video. I called KitchenAid costumer service because I wanted to return my mixer. They told me no even though it was only a month after my purchase. I got so mad! They said nothing is wrong with the mixer and too bad I am not happy with it. I explained all my concerns and why I didn’t think it was worth all that money, that I didn’t mind paying that much because I thought it would be exactly what I needed in my kitchen. I make bread once a week and I needed a mixer for that not for cookie dough. Anyways since I had to keep it I stopped baking because I was super upset and have not used the mixer since then. After seeing your video I am going to try all those things you mentioned and see if I get my problems solved. Thanks 🙏

As a former computer customer support person we had a term for this. RTFM, or the less commonly used, but more polite, RTM. Read The Manual.
Step 6 in the getting started section explains how to adjust the clearance.
That said, the dime trick is great!
    But...
My mixer bowl cannot be raised high enough to achieve the appropriate clearance. I use a couple of stainless steel washers to raise the bowl but this causes the bowl to be unlevel.
I suspect the reason these mixers need adjustments is that the tolerances allowed in manufacturing are too loose and thus a single setting cannot be done.

@@Rgj_j Returning a product because you didn't read the manual costs the rest of the consumers that do. Some use their mixers to kneed dough and there are limitations for that in the manual also. Reading the manual would take less time than watching this video and it would cover more.

I just purchased this Professional 600 and eagerly await its arrival. It will be replacing my old bowl-lift KitchenAid which I have had for almost 40 years. I am now making all my own bread and need the higher power motor 575 watt vs 300 watt of my old mixer. Thank you so much for this video, I never had any trouble with my old mixer, but it is good to know what adjustment I may need to make on this new one. The main reason I am making this switch is because of all the wonderful reviews about it concerning kneading bread dough. I am also getting a KoMo grain mill and will, in fact be grinding my own flour. There are still things to do and get excited about even in your retirement years.

I got this exact model just last August and only now found this video. Thanks for making it!
Mine is refurbished and I paid less than $300. I really like it even though I don't use it much. I've always wanted KitchenAid but something beefier than the Artisan line, and couldn't resist for the price.
I should point out that the initial smells from the motor don't have much, if anything, to do with quality--unless they persist. It's manufacturing oils and such that are being burned off. It's 100% normal.
I've also always added dry ingredients to wet, no matter what the recipe says. Doing it the other way always causes weird dry patches in the bottom of the bowl.

KitchenAid pro is ridiculously expensive in Canada I got mine for Christmas and my husband paid $700 Canadian. Mine is over five years old now and still works just as well as it did when I first got it. You are right it doesn’t do as well with smaller batches as it does with a bigger batch but I tend to be one of those girls whose motto is go big or go home LOL so it’s not usually an issue for me. When I bought my Pro it was my first ever Kitchen Aid mixer. I'd wanted one my whole life. The gears in my mixer burnt and stripped within the first several uses. I was horrified, a little online research and I found that this was a common problem not covered under warranty. A little more research and I found instruction on how to fix the mixer and what parts needed to be upgraded. I bought the parts and tore the mixer a part.
I made the repairs and my Kitchen Aid is now indestructible. I've lost all faith in Kitchen Aid though, and would never purchase anything else from them. Also the grease used to pack the bearings and gears is only available in a very large tub, and I'm left with a few pounds of the grease as it only really took a small amount to repack everything. Live and learn, I'm sure the mixer will last a very long time now that I replaced the inferior gears and bearings.

If I may, I'm new to baking/cooking. I had a kitchen aid my grandmother took apart and resembled incorrectly . The thing is somewhere around 40 years old. I took it apart cleaned the old chunks of food out of it and replaced the trim brushes and adjusted the speed Control and reapplied the grease where it needed to be and it runs great now! $75 and it's a dream. Yes I learned that trying to kneed dough with a k45 is a bit much for the machine as the dough gets stiffer.
Thank you for the fair review of the pro I found it helpful in understanding what it's capable of

I will admit a tear came to my eye when you returned your first Kitchenaid Pro without making the adjustment - so sad! One thing I've found with this model though, is the meat grinder can cause your attachment gear to wear. I will admit that I probably grind more meat than the normal person (I make my own hamburger), and I also apply a lot of pressure pushing the meat down the tube. I did get an older metal grinder attachment, so that probably saved the attachment from breaking, but I had to replace the mixer attachment gear twice! I finally decided to do two things. First, I got a new Kitchenaid Pro and gave the old one to a friend. Second, I bought a dedicated meat grinder from Cabelas. No more troubles, no more worries! I enjoy these two appliances so much I even packed them into a suitcase and brought them with me when I moved to México! I'm still trying to figure out how to get my Masterbuilt smoker down here!

I grew so tired of commercial mince that seems to be constituted solely from floor sweepings that I now make my own: the difference is remarkable. Having control over the ingredients is a game changer, you can formulate a batch to best fit the cooking method and/or speed and it doesn't taste and smell like rejected dog food.

That was the most extensive and funny "Part 1" review I have ever seen for this mixer. A friend of mine want to buy it, but hesitates because of the price ... here in Italy it costs about 800 Euros, made some rare exceptions where it is offered around 600, new from the shelf. I also know from the factory, that they have problems to properly test and clean their products before selling. I've heard of oily bowls and greasy mechanics quite a lot, and also from mixers which did not work at all. However, I do also know that once you get it running, it's the best you can get, of this size, unless you opt for an industrial mixer with a 50 litre bowl 😄

Oh my GOODNESS I'm so glad I came across this video! You actually posted it a month after I bought my own Pro, and probably around the time that I put it on a back shelf and went back to using our Artisan for everything except stiff breads, because I didn't know about the bowl adjustment. Two years later and I'm starting to think about upping my Christmas cookie game (read: making bigger batches, thus justifying the Pro) and wondering if anyone on TH-cam has thoughts about this useless mixer I bought at the start of the pandemic. Thank you SO MUCH.

I knew about the screw adjustment, but not the dime trick, so I’ve always wondered if the setting was ideal on mine (unless the beater is scraping the bowl, there’s just no way to know if the setting is right; you can’t tell visually). Thanks for the trick!

I got a KitchenAid Pro at the end of last year when it was on sale, and I have got to say I absolutely love it. My old mixer was a Breville, which I had to hold in place or it would 'walk' its way across the bench! Also love the bigger bowl on it, which makes it much easier to make Italian meringue buttercream (my go to frosting for cakes) as the meringue cools significantly faster

    • @JimN5QL

After thinking about getting a stand mixer for a long time, I came across a Kenwood professional model, secondhand and cheap in a restaurant supply shop. It is 100% professional model, with the industrial push switches on the side and everything that moves is steel.
Despite being pretty old and obviously having worked hard all of its life, it still builds confidence that it could work harder.
I'm in the UK, so they are more common here than the usually entry level Kitchin Aid that comes with lots of plastic inside.

thanks for your review. i used to be a professional chef and used only large hobarts. i wanted to get one for my wife but was scared off by the bad reviews. good to know it is just a handful of people who are using it improperly. they aren't cheap, but certainly cheaper than the 7000$ plus ones i used in the industry, but by god were those bullet proof. i looked for a used one to be honest, but even the old ones are still going for 2000$ and up, made me regret not buying 2 for 1000$ when i had the chance.

I bought a KitchenAid Artisan a few years ago. After using it for a while, I posted a review on Amazon. The gist of my review was "this thing should be better than it is for what it cost", without harsh criticism. I was amazed at the number of people who piled on! Apparently there are a lot of KitchenAid fanpersons out there. I still have the mixer and I still think it's an OK mixer. Oh, and that mystery screw? I found out about it probably 6 months ago. Making the adjustment made my mixer work a little better. Cheers!

I had thought of updating my Kenwood Chef bought in 1975 but the KitchenAid prices were astronomic the UK. Even the new Kenwood are a sizeable chunk of change too. So what to do.
I bought another vintage KenwoodChef as they are easy to restore and I have no problems with bread doughs or small quantities.
I agree that the money needs to be in the motor and be ready for use.

    Wow, Great Video, Thank You.
I did not know about that adjustment for the proper height setting and I read the manuals.
Now, if you don't mind me saying so, your Artisan mixer needs a grease change, it is leaking.
There are plenty of videos on that and I just made one on the Professional 5 Plus grease change out, no advertisement intended. Really!
I do recommend a clean up and an internal parts inspection on your Artisan.

I strongly suggest checking for refurbished models, they're cheaper, and while the warranty is shorter (from 1 year for "new" to 6 months for refurbished" the refurbished models are less likely to need the warranty because they are far more rigorously tested before they're put back out for sale

I bought a Kitchen Aid Pro on QVC, I got a great deal on it. $299 and it has the beautiful glass bowl.
I’ve only used it once because of the bowl adjustment. It didn’t mix properly and I was thinking of selling it because of this.
I didn’t have a clue about the adjustment screw until I watched this video. Why don’t they put this in their instructions? Now I’ll have to do the dime test and adjust my mixer. Hopefully I’ll get more use out of it.

I use the Pro for wet dough, dry dough, frosting (a favorite),.....but the most wonderful thing it does for me is make a mountain of fresh, hot mashed potatoes in just a couple of minutes. My back and shoulders can't do that anymore....with the Pro, it's a snap! Happy family, happy grandma.... :)

I recently pickup KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus (Onyx Black, they didn't have the Red available within 250 miles of my location) with 525 watt motorand 5QT bowl @ BestB. It was on sale for $279 (originally $449). I was going to get the Classic (250 watt motor) for $259, so I opted for the Pro with a bigger motor for $20 more. The Artisan (325 watt motor) was more expensive than the Pro for $349.
The screw bowl height adjustment is written in the manual. But I need to do the dime test.
