    Hello, former Dyson in-store "expert" here. Just like to add my two cents worth about these since I have used the V6, V8, V7, and V10, along with the Ball Animal.. literally thousands of times. The company was always pushing us to pimp the V10 over everything else. However, just like other products, it's a highly personal choice which should be based on YOUR needs and budget vs. helping a large company recoup their R&D. That being said, whenever customers asked me which vacuum is best.. I always asked them a couple of basic questions: 1. Do you already have a full-size vac you like- but just want something for quick pick-ups, to put upstairs, use in the car, or in pet areas? 2. Do you have mostly hard surfaces, or a mixture of surfaces, or just mainly carpet? Depending on what they responded, I would direct them to the appropriate vac- sometimes NOT a cordless, but the tried and true, long-lasting Ball Animal. You can pick one of these up at Costco for under $300.00 and with some basic maintenance, you'll get ten years out of it. Plus, it sucks nearly down to the baseboards and is the only Dyson vac certified by Asthma and Allergy foundation. I found it to be a much better overall value than ANY of the cord-frees. IF you already own a vac you like and you just want something to use in-between cleans or for messy pets/kids, then a V-8 will fill the bill nicely and is kinder to your wallet. In fact, depending on where you buy them, it is often possible to purchase BOTH a V-8 and a Ball Animal for around the same price as one V10 Absolute. If you have an unlimited budget and want to chuck your corded vac, then the V-10 is a solid, albeit overpriced (IMHO) choice. Just remember: at the end of the day, a Dyson is just a vacuum, not a status symbol, not a technological juggernaut, cultural touchstone, cult symbol, or any other such nonsense. It's a tool... that's all.

      Thanks so much for sharing your insights, Tammy.
      100% agree.
      I wouldn't say the V10, V8, or any vacuum for that matter, is the "end all be all". Like you say, it's a personal choice based on what a particular person is going to use it to clean.

      Thank you so very much for your complete explanation. I have been surfing the net to buy a Dyson Vacuum but am confused on what to pick. Just for my flat, wooden floor, car yes, and no dogs hair to be cleaned. Just to pick mainly dusts, and surfaces etc. Many thanks, you are a star.

    I've had my V6 for 5 years now and the battery is fine. The battery doesn't just suddenly die in 2 years. It might degrade a little bit to 90% or 80% capacity, but you definitely don't need to replace it every 2 years.

    I have not uses the V10, but I love, love, love my Dyson V8 vacuum ! I'm sure they are very similar in convience. I bought my V8 because all my vacuum cleaners were bulky and heavier than my body could handle with out having a day or so of recovery time, after I vacuumed my house. With the dyson V8, I could hardly believe the ease of cleaning my house! It's so light weight and effortless, I can clean my house in half the time! And my body doesn't need recovery time! It's so nice to not need to look for an electric outlet. I can't tell enough people about my V8 and how much I love it!

    The battery information is slightly wrong. Yes, the V10 battery is larger because it has 1 x INR20700A 30A Sanyo cell more (7 instead of 6), but it is basically the SAME type of 20700-cell as in the V7 and V8. Dysons "15 years" life time claim is based on estimates on how the average consumer uses the battery. This is NOT to say that the battery of the V7/V8 would be much different as the technology is the SAME. The cycle time is about the same - 800 - but thanks to the extra cell, I'd say life time - increases maybe +15%. So comparing 2 years and 15 is a "slight" overstatement. I am a hobbyist battery-technician and not an expert but Dyson hasn't invented a secret Lithium technology that LG, Samsung, Sony or Panasonic don't know about.

    I just ordered the V8 Absolute on Dyson’s website chat for 350 bucks. They let you choose one of three bonus kits, and the sales person offered me a free bag to hold the attachments, but I asked for the “flexi crevice tool” attachment instead, and he threw it in for free! And you get two day shipping.. as for the battery on the V8 vs V10, I actually like the fact that if the V8 ever dies, I can order a replacement battery from Dyson’s site, and replace it by only removing three screws.. thanks for the reviews!

    The V10 Absolute and V10 Animal include the “Torque” brushbar which is 25% stronger then the Motorhead version. The rubber gasket on the trailing edge provides a tight seal to most, if not, all floor surfaces - which greatly increases the efficiency of the unit. Often we are stuck comparing airwatts to airwatts but Dyson has taken a holistic approach to the V10 in terms of more efficient plumbing of the unit (very linear), as well as provided the Cyclone V10 Absolute and V10 Animal versions with a very efficient and powerful head for carpets compared to the Motorhead model and all previous models cordless models the company has released. When compared Side by side the Cyclone V10 Animal/Absolute will provide a substantial improvement over the V7/8 Animal / V7/8 Absolute models on carpet (wall to wall/area rugs)!

    I think the small things like how the bin empties are the only important changes. Dyson is probably holding back on what technology it releases so that when they release the V10s it will make the V10 look like crap. Nice video tho.

  • @mkmcdowell4648

    The V10 Motorhead's dust bin is smaller. It's about the same size as the V8's. Also, the V10's maximum run time is based on the lowest power setting which has less power than the V8's lowest setting. A fair comparison would be the V10's run time on it's medium power. I bought the V8. At it's reduced price point since the release of the V10, I felt the V8 was a much better value.

      You are correct. I double checked the dustbin sizes.

    I had a roomba and replaced it with a v8. much better and more convenient. the roomba was tearing up parts of the house and getting stuck, taking way too long, and was very loud and a triping hazard as to do an area would take an hour. the v8 is as fast as I can walk so I usually clean the whole 2 level house in about 12 minutes. The fluffy head is the best feature for sure and I do not feel the need to upgrad to v10 the v8 and the battery changes if needed are fine with me

    You mentioned 2 filters on the V8 but only one on the V10 - is there a second filter on the V10? If so, how do you access and clean it? Do you have to replace the hepa filters?

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is not.
      The V10 only has a single HEPA filter on the rear of the unit.
      The V8 has the HEPA filter on the rear of the unit + a central filter that slides into the middle of the cyclones.
      You do not need to replace any of the filters. They are washable and will last the lifetime of the vacuum (with proper cleaning and care).

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question!
      Whether it's Dyson, any vacuum that has a dustbin will likely have spots that are hard to clean out. You might try a can of compressed air, or better yet a small air compressor.
      amzn.to/2JFHOH6 - this is what I use to clean out lots of different vacuums that we test. Pretty much every vacuum I've tested at some point could use a good blast of air to help get dust out of harder to reach spaces.
      Beyond that, a damp rag or paper towel is great to remove finer debris that won't come out by just bumping the dust bin into the trash can.

    • @ModernCastle

      For me it just comes down to the maintenance costs.
      If the V10 battery really does last as long as Dyson says it will (or really anywhere near that 15 year mark) it is going to make it less expensive over the life of the vacuum. This factor alone is enough to make it a better buy, but when you factor in the other performance differences I think it's a pretty clear choice (in my opinion).

    V8 if you have mostly carpet, V10 of you have mostly hard floors. Reason you will need to use the V10 on medium power for carpet to be as effective as the V8... And because of this you will have 5 mins less runtime... But the V10 takes less time to charge.... Hmmm. So with hard floors you will use low power mode on the V10 and have more runtime with equal sucking performance.

    Little late to the party, did you ever learn more about the batteries? I talked to Dyson support and they were pretty quick to shut down the idea that the vacuum battery would last 15 years. As far as I can tell, the only difference in the batteries is that there is one extra cell and that the batteries are smaller to save on weight to compensate for the additional weight of the 7th cell. It’s this 7th cell that gives it the extra run time. However, the batteries have a similar life time which is mostly dependent on how well you take care of it ie what temperature you store it and how you charge it/discharge it. It seems these batteries can easily last 5 years+ (with maybe a 60-80%) charge if well taken care of. There is a v10 battery being offered in their online store and I’m told the battery is replaceable, so it seems to me like the battery doesn’t in fact last 15 years.
    Also, did you compare the driver head of the v8 to the torque head of the v10? I don’t think I saw it in this review. Advertising claims it’s 25% better agitation, but not sure if it’s really that much better in real world practice.
    Thanks for the review.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matt,
      Thanks for your questions.
      Everything you've stated about the battery is the extent of my knowledge as well. It seems that maybe Dyson as a company is backtracking on the founder's public statements.
      Regarding the V8's direct drive vs. v10's torque drive head, I haven't done any side by side tests because the nature of the difference between them is incredibly small (in my view). With a few small exceptions, both the V8 and V10 removed nearly all of the debris on our tests.
      Is the V10 torque drive head better? Definitely. However, I think much of the performance is being driven by the sheer suction power of the V10 motor. Dyson's 25% improved performance is based on the V8 vs. V10 with their respective heads in max mode.
      So I'm not sure if it would really be a 25% increase if you popped the V8 head on the V10.
      In any case, both cleaning heads offered nearly flawless cleaning performance. So the difference is really dust / debris that's deeply embedded into carpets or is ultra fine particulates.

      Kirby vacs cost around 1000$ but last 25+ years and turn into a shampooer.
      But it's better to get one used for about 300+ because if something does go wrong it's parts are easy to find.

      @Sophie My parents have a FQ Majestic. Very clean house. I went in and vacuumed the carpet after their housecleaner with my V8 and easily pulled a pile of dirt out. I would take the cordless Dyson over the FQ. The FQ's wand snap connector broke for no reason. $100USD.

      @Sophie I have a V8 and they sent me a V10 Motorhead last week because the V8 cracked at the handle. The Motorhead V10 has a smaller bin than the regular V10 and V11. The basket is the same size as the V8 basket. I do like the design of the V8 better, but the V10 and especially the V11 have way better batteries and other features. Some like the Motorhead because is is smaller. I would never use a corded vacuum again. V8, V10, V11. Watch a bunch of reviews and choose one based on features and price. Good luck!

      @Sophie The V6 is the only one worth looking at, but is is still a lesser unit compared to the V8, 10, 11. I would watch the V6 vs V8 videos before buying. A new V8 absolute will have fresh batteries, full warranty and be much better than the V6. The money you will spend on the used V6 can offset the cost of the V8...

      We don't have the V8 here (we borrowed it for our review) so I cannot 100% verify right now.
      But just looking at the total height, V8 and V10 are basically the same.
      V8 is 49" tall. V10 is 49.2" tall. Even if the stick is a little bit shorter the overall reach is still more or less the same.

    Not necessarily agree, you’re assuming that the battery life is going to dwindle on the V8 and that’s all depends on your usage. There are far too many variables on that. Remember that even with its supposed maintenance cost you have to go over 9 years of use to equal the cost difference between the two. That’s using your $32 a year maintenance cost on the V8 divide that into the $300 extra cost of the V10 and there you go, not worth it to get the V10, for a slightly better performance, a run time that’s negligible and the dirt cup that you have to empty anyway.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're not wrong, there are definitely many variables in play here and our $32 / year is an estimate, at best. In retrospect, I wish we had excluded that cost per year number, as there are just too many variables.
      In our more recent reviews and videos we've excluded these estimates for many of the reasons you call out above.
      In any case, I still do believe the V10 is the better value, given the improved cleaning head, longer run time, and increased suction. Even if you assume they are equal with respect to on-going maintenance, the other features on the V10 give it an overall edge, in my view.
      Thanks so much for your inputs and additions to the conversion. Appreciate your views.

      That's good to know. The 2 years is a fairly conservative estimate (I didn't want people to be surprised if their battery didn't last that long). Since Dyson covers the battery via the warranty for the first 2 years, that seemed like a safe estimate.

    What maintenance price per year for v8?

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Around $32 / year, though it really depends on how often the battery lasts you (ie, how you use the vacuum.)
      If you replace the battery every 2 years, it comes out to $32 / year.
      If you manage to get your battery to lasts 4 years it's only $16 /year.
      The filters are lifetime and washable. So no need to replace them unless they are damaged (which really shouldn't happen).

    V10 Motorhead come with V8's old style head, not the new one, that's why V10 motorhead is cheaper

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's correct.
      The V10 motorhead also is slightly lighter (5.5 vs. 5.9 pounds), does not include the mini dusting brush, dust not include the mini motorized brush roll, does not include the fluffy cleaning head, and has a slightly smaller dust bin (.53L vs. 0.76L).
      I recently added a comparison table between the motorhead vs. animal vs. absolute for anyone else that may be interested.

    Hi, I appreciate that you try to make videos for the differences between the v8 and the v10. What I do not understand is the difference between the battery of V8 and the v10. Both are the same except for 1 cell (6 vs 7 cell) and also Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum battery technology in both machines. Only the dyson director has expressed his opinion on the fact that with normal use the v10 will still have 80 percent capacity in 15 years. Will that also apply to the v8? I think so, but that is no longer interesting for marketing purposes.
    In addition, you compare two different motorheads. Why do not you put the fluffy on the v8, which are interchangeable. My experience with the v10 is that the hair of my girlfriend is very stuck on the black rubber. More than with the v8, they fall out very easy. And the power of the v8 in minimum position (28 airwatts) is about comparable to the medium position of the v10 (33 airwatts). Think the V8 is a better buy for now in terms of price / quality ratio. Keep it up, is of course appreciated.

      Hey Christian,
      Thanks for your comment.
      Regarding the battery, this is an area I still want to do more research into. I'm trying to get in touch with a battery expert who can weigh in on the specifics of each battery. I don't know enough about the different batteries used to say if Dyson's 15 year claim is legitimate. But, it would seem reckless of Dyson to make such a claim if it was entirely untrue.
      Regarding the models, I actually have the V10 Absolute and a V8 Animal. Initially my thought was to not use the V10 fluffy head on the V8, so it wouldn't cause confusion if performance differed compared to the V8 with the V8 fluffy head. That said, I think you make a fair point. I'll see if I can do a quick updated test this week sometime and see what sort of performance the V8 yields with the V10's fluffy head attached. As I mentioned in my contextual review (and I think the video also), I expect the V8 with the fluffy head would score close to the same as the V10 did.
      Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. Thanks!
      -Derek

      It's a INR20700A, 30A high power draw lithium cell (I believe it is made by Sanyo in their Taiwan factory) - Yes - V7 and V8 has 6 cells and V10 has 7. No, the cell in the V10 is not different than the ones in V7 or V8. Cycle time is around 800 for the battery - meaning that after 800 cycles, battery capacity drops to around 70-80%. Because Lithium Battery lifetime increases slightly with low voltage charging - Dyson intentionally has a very low charge current, even though they "could" top the battery in under 60 minutes.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it purely the fact that the V10 is a 7 cell battery the reason it lasts around 20 minutes longer than the V8?
      Do you happen to know why the V7 battery doesn't last as long as the V8, if they are the same battery?
      Thanks!

  • @robob221

    I dont quite understand how you can claim its a "no brainer" to get the v10. The v10 costs $200-$250 more than the v8 yet you conclude because the cost per battery replacement of the v8 if split per year (if battery diminishes within the 2 year claim) of $32. It negates the initial gargantuan entry fee differences between the two and comes off misleading. The way I see it and many middle class consumers should see it is if you don't have a very large home to clean with pets that can benefit from the just over 10min longer battery of the v10, buy the v8 and deal with the small differences in the bin chamber design. I wish you would of concluded that all the Dyson wireless vacuums should be separated amongst there battery lengths per each consumer needs. The v10 is not supposed to be the iPhone 10, while the v7 or v8 is the iPhone of the past. They all work nearly identically and will provide one of the best wireless vacuuming experiences on the planet right now.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for your thoughts! I appreciate your perspective.
      To clarify my own perspective, and why I think it's a no brainer...it really just comes down to the annual maintenance costs.
      The V8 Absolute is $500. The V10 Absolute is $700. So we have a $200 difference.
      However, the annual maintenance costs on the V8 are $32 / year vs. $0 / year on the V10 (on account of the battery). So that means the breakeven point on the initial cost difference is 7 years.
      7 years of maintenance on the V8 will cost (on average based on the estimated battery life) $224. So if think you'll have either vacuum for 7 years or more it's better to pay a little more upfront for the V10.
      Either way, there are assumptions and estimates that have to be made. I am assuming what Dyson is saying about the V10 battery is true. I am also taking an estimated 2 year battery life for the V8. If the V10 battery doesn't last as long, the V8 battery lasts longer, or the V8 price drops, then it may change things. But as it is right now, I think the V10 is a better choice due to the maintience costs.
      When you factor in the other differences (larger dust bin, longer run time, slightly better cleaning performance), then it becomes even more clear, in my opinion.

    What do you mean by maintenance cost?

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maintenance costs are the costs required to keep the vacuum in good working order. On the V8 and V10 they really only include the cost to replace the battery when it dies(given the estimated life time for that battery vs. the replacement costs).

    Is it ok to keep the dyson vacuums charged all the time ?

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not certain about some of the newer models, but I know for sure that the V6 should not be plugged in all the time. If you do so, it will dramatically diminish the life of the battery.
      As a general rule, I would advise unplugging when they are charged and not plugging in until they are fully drained.
      It is worth pointing out that Dysons can hold their charge for a fairly lengthy period of time (I've seen my V10 hold for a couple of weeks).

    Do NOT buy it unless ready to subscribe for annual battery replacement at ca. 1/4 of the initial cost! Battery warranty is only 6 months compared to 24 for the machine and dealers refuse free of charge replacement citing the exception, although battery and motor are the 2 main components (remaining is basically plastics). My battery died at month 11 after 50-60 cycles of regular home use, although the dealer said it should last for 500-600. Replacement was still refused.

    When emptying to V10 you'll need to remove the wand assembly. You should have mentioned that. Also, wear socks.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is true.
      As I've mentioned in other comments, the fact you hve to remove the wand didn't feel like a big deal to me...mostly because I was still removing the wand on the V6, V7, and V8, as leaving them attached while emptying the dust bin was far more cumbersome.
      But others could find that fact annoying.
