It's "future as imagined in fifties, destroyed by nuclear war".

You know, it's funny, that game has so many glaring flaws. I'm aware of them now, I was well aware of them when I first played it, but I still love it.
I'm kind of big on a good gameplay loop, but I love Fallout 3 despite its subpart gameplay.

But it's so ugly, with a depressing color pallet. I dont think new players with stick with it long enough to discover the mastery.

Hi Clayton, I'm a huge Fallout guy, so let me give you some advice.
Fallout 1, The original, only got one patch after release, so I would recommend downloading a mod called "Fixt", it's a big unofficial patch that fixes many bugs and has quality of life improvements.
The gameplay is somewhat outdated, and could be frustrating at times (and for that I actually recommended a character creation guide to give you a head-start and save you some headache later on), other than that the timeless graphics and great story and atmosphere carry the experience.
Ok, with all that done, TWO BIG tips, the first is that you're on a time limit, so don't loiter too much before resolving the game's first act, after that, you're free to explore and quest however you like, the second, don't read anything about the story of the game, it's one of the greatest stories in video games, that should be enjoyed organically.
    BEST OF LUCK ✌😄

  • @davemasaitis4597

If you want the best Lore-centric experience, start with the original Fallout, and work your way forward. This way, you will understand a lot more of the easter eggs and terminal references as you go, instead of trying to retroactively tie it all together in your head.
Also, skipping 1 and 2 misses some of the very best storystelling in the franchise. What they lack in modern graphics, they make up for with rich storytelling, because they *had* to.

In the unlikely outcome that you convert to PC gaming; FO3 and FO New Vegas are separate games, however on PC there is a mod called " A Tale of Two Wastelands" that links the two games as one so you can seamlessly travel between the east coast (FO3) and the west coast (NV). You keep everything in between traveling OR you can simply finish FO3 and then continue to NV in a kind of new-New Game+ kind of way.

I enjoy playing games on Steam through my PC, despite not being much of a PC person. I prefer gaming on my 65-inch TV. Although I'm not fond of using a mouse and keyboard, the beauty of PC gaming is that you can easily connect any joystick and have it detected by Steam. This allows you to play as if you were on a console, without the need for a keyboard and mouse. As for Fallout, the first-person shooter aspect tends to give me headaches, unless I'm playing on a smaller screen. Considering this, I'm thinking of trying it out on the Steam Deck. While Fallout isn't at the top of my list, I might give it a shot later this year. By the way, great TH-cam channel! Keep up the good work. All the best!

One additional option to play Fallout 3 and New Vegas on PS4 or 5, is if you have the PS Plus subscription that grants you access to the "classics" catalog. You can stream all sorts of games from the PS1-PS3 libraries, like 3 and New Vegas.
Granted, it's similar to having Game Pass, but again, it's another option. Especially for those who maybe only have (or purely prefer to play on) a PlayStation.

Of course it depends on what you like
Another thing is that if you are a fan of just such games, then Fallout 1, 2 and (even though this is a separate and simplified game, but still good) Fallout Tactics are the best
then comes the console fallout brotherhood of steel
It’s a pity that they didn’t tell you that in our time it is advisable to install a mod on fallout in order to significantly improve playability, several childhood diseases of early games have been corrected there
(and on Apocalytic Road it is generally advisable to install a pack of mods - 10-15)
Fallout 1 and 2 are generally advisable to go through several times in any case
as they say - the only bad thing about fallout is that you can only play it once for the first time
another thing is that it takes a long time, now people usually don’t spend that much time

Good call starting with 1 . I started with 2 when it came out way back when , and that was one of my favourite games , and kinda still is really , although the last time I played either 1 or 2 was probably about 10 years ago or so on my second playthrough of both.
Fallout 3 , NV and 4 are good games in their own right (haven't played 76) , but 1 and 2 are different than the rest. I liked the stories , the atmosphere and the overall feel / vibe of 1 and 2 a bit more than the later games.
Oh and btw there is also Fallout Tactics. I had played that one a bit , but never really got through it. I think that one was focused more on the Brotherhood of Steel side of things.
Now I'm feeling like I'm gonna have to go play some fallout again 😁

@@redplague2133 Yeah i understand that, but the game is a brutal point and click that reads like mad max and i have no mouth and must scream mixed together. Its good writing, but getting sexually assaulted and robbed by byron in 2 for having a low intelligence female character is shit that’s entirely untelegraphed. getting locked out of meaningful dialogue for taking int as a dump stat sucks. writing good but it was utterly outclassed by baldurs gate 1 and 2 in terms of smooth game play. the first 2 fallouts amount to the biggest choose your own adventure books ever.

That’s why “Mentats” are in the game. But I actually like playing through with different stats to see how it goes.
The only actual drawback I see playing long games as an adult - you need to actually remember what you were doing since there’s much less time for gaming and the frequency aint regular either.

I remember when I played FO3 as my first FO game. The story and the fact that it was an RPG but was also had guns it was so foreign to me, I was in love! But I wondered why anyone would make such an ugly looking world. Though that too turned into part of the appeal. It connects perfectly with the storyline and combined with the awesome 50's music. It had me playing FO3 soundtrack while at home doing chores or work. That game left a huge impression on me and I'm so glad Amazon didnt kill it, like they've done with a lot of other IPs.

@2:27 If you are part of the PC master race, you can start anywhere and save a lot of money doing so, do to regular discounts. 😘🤗 The market for console games coincides with the collectors market and physical copies are scarce, so expect to pay at least 50% to 100% more for it. 🤔 Unless you think of the Steam Deck as console, then you benefit from the discounts, too. 🤷‍♂ I started with Fallout 4 and in hindsight it is the most accessible for newbs. If you are a hardcore roleplay enthusiast and love the original lore, you probably won't like it because that isn't the focus of the game.
@6:10 As a console peasant, you could use a Steam Deck to play it or a half decent laptop with APU would suffice.😘🤔
@10:14 Currently, I am into Fallout 3 GOTYE. As far as I can tell, the role play aspect is stronger.

Ideally, Fallout 1 & 2 would indeed be the way to go; in fact, there is a nice flow in terms of the development from 1 to 2 (i.e., the 2nd game has the same format as the 1997 original, but it's an overall improvement). In terms of gameplay, New Vegas should be an ideal start for those who don't want to play 1 or 2, but the lore in New Vegas vs the TV show..., there seems to be conflict...(?) BUT! This has been addressed by the creators & now there's a timeline to prove there is no conflict!
That aside, the 3rd is the one I started with & it's probably the best, by default, to play for those skipping 1 & 2, yet want exposure to the Fallout lore. As for Fallout 4 & Fallout 76, they are very much the same game imho -- their faults become more & more apparant as you play them, but out of these two, Fallout 76 takes the cake in terms of how bad a game can be made so as to risk destroying an entire ~25yr old franchise.
Luckily, Bethesda did avert the collapse of Fallout via Fallout 76 by releasing (thus far) 18 major updates since the game launched & still has another on the way..., but yikes! The game is always online & exists as many different persistent game worlds -- it's been improved, but both Fallout 4 & 76 fall victim to performance issues (Fallout 4 really missed it in terms of graphics, & the game has some serious glitching to it as well) & the always present & pervasive appeal to player microtransactions. This introduces the fun of potentially having to pay real money for something as basic as quick travel...once. & That's just not cool! Plus, Fallout 4 & 76 really marked a turn away from the modding community, which they claimed wasn't what they were doing at all...they just left the option open while releasing their own premium mod content...(?) I don't know. Fallout 4 & 76...in my own opinion...are not too difficult to skip altogether...
Otherwise, Clayton -- you need a small form factor PC you can connect to your Home Theater; with Steam's controller support, it gets the PC pretty close to the ease of playing on a console...you'd still need easy access to a mouse & keyboard though.

And of course there’s a bunch of well-made lore videos on YT, if you’re interested.

I've never played the Fallout series. Now that its got my curiosity, I am going to try it. Many have said to start the series with a later game but with me I like to start at the very beginning so I am going to start with the very first one. I like seeing how a franchise get its start and this is the best way how. I've also played PC games way back when I had an IBM 286 PC and the way consoles are going nowadays I may return to PC gaming since I have many more options compared to consoles. Great video discussion.

I was gonna play all of them but, ultimately, there are too many good games in my backlog and too little time. I played 1 so I could at least understand the inception of the series and it honestly was a transformative experience. That game was fundamental for the trajectory of future cRPGs.
I tried a bit of Fallout 2 but the “chosen one” angle was way too overdone from the beginning and so I stopped playing it. Many months later, I will soon start my fallout experience again with New Vegas and then wait for Fallout London.
