Hineni John3:16 you’re comparing white chicks to more than 200 years of minstrel shows which were extremely prominent within anti black culture. Blackface (and many other tactics used to marginalize the early descendants of African American chattel slavery) was a direct result of anti black institutionalized racism... white chicks was a movie about two black men that go undercover as two of Hollywood’s rich bachelorettes. Although the creators decided to use whiteface and material white girl stereotypes, the creators have also created movies displaying stereotype more towards other demographics including woman, and black people, none of which were used to systematically oppress hundreds of thousands people like how blackface did... so the problem is that you either don’t know your history or you naturally have a biased opinion

Epic!!! We all miss the 90, everything is so trashy now, even James Charles goes to these things now a days... It's no longer glamorous and exclusive, it's losing its flair!
Okay, everyone. I want to set the record straight. I don't know about this "white-face" "black-face" stuff, but this was a pure impersonation. Two movies that were nominated for Oscars that year, "Shakespeare in Love" and "Elizabeth", included Queen Elizabeth, so Whoopi dressed up like her. The music played in the background is the theme song from "Shakespeare in Love". In that movie, an older version of Queen Elizabeth is played by Judi Dench. In Elizabeth, she is potrayed by Cate Blanchett, as a young adult.
+Morgan Wipert I think the problem is that black-face WAS a mockery of black people for many, many, many, many years. It was meant to degrade. Here, we aren't sure what to think because this is a reverse. I know WHY Whoopie did it, but I also understand anyone that might be a little thrown off by it.
people seem to forget too that in those days people such as the queen also famously used thick white powder to appear more porcelain as if to convey that virginal and pure essence.
+Ryan Beaty No, I don't understand people being "thrown off" when the Queen in the movie Shakespeare in Love - Dame Judy Dench - had white face paint on. Exactly like what Whoopi had, hence the theme of Whoopi's monologue. Dumb people trying to justify their own racism about how it is "unfair" Whoopi can make fun of people when this is not even whiteface to begin with.
Anyone who complains about this needs to take look at any painting of queen Elizabeth or just watch the 2 movies this performance is a reference to. She very much wore white makeup to make herself look really, really white.
@oof the truth Her white make up was period appropriate. Elizabeth I was known for putting on copious amounts of white make up as she got older due to smallpox facial scars. Learn your own history ,you ignoramus, before screaming reverse racism.
@@umitencho Yes Whoopi Goldberg was funny, but she was still doing 'White face.' You can cut out the mental gymnastics. She was obviously portraying herself as Elizabeth I, yes she wore a white lead-based make-up on her face, that doesn't change the fact that Whoopi made her face white while portraying a White person. Also, 'reverse racism' isn't a thing. Racism against White is just plain racism and claims to the contrary are blatant Cultural Marxism, just like BLM is Marxist.
Oh good grief, Queen Elizabeth 1 wore white makeup. And since there was nominations for movies about/with Queen Elizabeth 1 that is why Whoopi came dressed out as Elizabeth the first. It had nothing to do with being white faced or black faced or race. Do you think for one moment that Whoopi would go out there white faced if she found it offensive to anyone? No one made her. she could have refused if she did find it offensive.
0:14 awn, Cate hahaha I love it how the first person they showed laughing was her, I mean, she was nominated for playing Elizabeth I that year, after all.

My mom taped this whole 1999 Oscars for a time capsule that I got to open this year. Incredible getting to see what life what like then. And how so much has changed also. Car ad’s for example blew me away. Didn’t show no price, interest, monthly payments at all. Just the specs of the vehicle. Bf explained that people back then could afford them without needing to know the price. Also when Robin William presented an award. For a moment it felt like he wasn’t gone. His comedy brought a light back. Happy to have the whole ceremony on tape forever
Dont get me wrong. I love Woopi. Just strange if you just mention the reverse of this skit you get fired with a huge check but labeled a racist, however here a standing ovation. People need to chill the f out.
Whoppi Goldberg painted her face white not because of 'white facing' but because it is part of the costume of this area - white lead as a mask. The dress that she is wearing is exactly the kind of dresses that Queen Elisabeth started to wear after Elisabeth I. took the following decision: Queen Elisabeth I. used white lead to paint her skin whiter than it was. In Renaissance that became very common for Monarchs. It is a thick white paste which makes the face look like a mask, although it is poisoning and destroys the skin. There is a political and social reason for the usage of white lead which has nothing to do with superior race but only with the status of being a Queen which reigns without any visible sign of emotions. Elisabeth I. decided to show her face as a symbol of reign, every day the same, never private, never emotional - like a mask. This made her strong as a symbol for the nation. Check early paintings and later paintings about Elisabeth I. This particular topic is part of the last scene of the movie Elisabeth I. and determines also her decision to stay an unmarried Queen, the Virgin Queen! - This is a historical fact. If the Queen wouldn't have painted her face with white lead, Whoopi wouldn't have painted her face white. I am a costume designer and I know what I am talking about.
+arsenalrulez1000 This isn't a parody of Star Wars. This is a parody of Shakespeare in Love (1999). Judi Dench played Queen Elizabeth and wore that exact outfit. You can also hear the Shakespeare in Love theme song in the background.
I do beleive that Whoopi Goldberg would be a great politician, she knows about people she understands about the world we live in, honest to a fault caring intelligent and makes people around her feel happy, may be politicians should start listening to her.

GARY ON BROADWAY it literally says Oscars 1999 in the title, last time I checked 9/11 was 2001...
I just adore how Sofia Loren is casually walking in to take her seat while Whoopi is in the midst of this grande performance. Hahah.
Hay even celebrities gotta go to the toilet. She probably was on her way back when the show started.
Back in the day when we could gather together & enjoy such presentations...
this is the BEST opening monolog the Oscars have ever had! She really should host more often.
0:55 OMG so sad! Imagine all the pain behind that smile. May he rest in peace.
"Ladies and gentleman, I am The African Queen" Best line ever! They should really give Whoopi more cred for hosting.
This popped up one day in my recommendations. Loved it ever since
a smile in everyones face...she is hillarious !!! love her !!!
OMG ! I died laughing !!! She's unique.

you all probably dont give a damn but does someone know a trick to get back into an instagram account??
I somehow forgot the password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
@Bryant Barrett instablaster ;)
I thought there were two of her??
She is amazing and so funny , she should host it again , been to long
Darren T?:Was sollte sie?
“African Queen”
Not what I was getting at but mkay
The aristocracy of the period wore white-face. Just as others wore white powdered wigs. It's not racist to dress in period attire. Get over it.
Rahul Gaikwad uhhhh yeah white people did it to black people for a while in real life.... it’s called blackface... and it was an actual thing lolol
More like a fucking clown
Hineni John3:16 you’re comparing white chicks to more than 200 years of minstrel shows which were extremely prominent within anti black culture. Blackface (and many other tactics used to marginalize the early descendants of African American chattel slavery) was a direct result of anti black institutionalized racism... white chicks was a movie about two black men that go undercover as two of Hollywood’s rich bachelorettes. Although the creators decided to use whiteface and material white girl stereotypes, the creators have also created movies displaying stereotype more towards other demographics including woman, and black people, none of which were used to systematically oppress hundreds of thousands people like how blackface did... so the problem is that you either don’t know your history or you naturally have a biased opinion
quality! They should get her to do the Oscars every year. The past few people have been torture. Great performance
I'm obsessed with the opening music as Whoopi comes on stage.
Ah the 90s, the best decade of my life and I didn't know it.
I remember seeing this when I was only 5 years old! My mother and I were just cracking up! GO WHOOPI!
"Thank You, Bill..." I cried so hard xD
I don't get it
Oh... Ok..... Nice.... Nice.... To know.......😐😕
+Shaun Stephens, Pretty normal dude, it grows an inch a year.

MrDarkenral Ed Harris.
Who’s still watching on 2019 ?
This just came up in my recommended lol
I came for the comments... one rule for thee another for me.....whiteface is racist, dressing as an iconic white english queen is cultural appropriation suck it up hypocrites😁😁🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😆😆😆

She’s a real entertainer
I am feeling down, so I'm glad I saw this. She made me laugh. I especially like when she said she's going to return the Gown to Sir Elton John.
😂😂😂😂😂😂👏👏👏👏
Epic!!! We all miss the 90, everything is so trashy now, even James Charles goes to these things now a days... It's no longer glamorous and exclusive, it's losing its flair!
Excuseee mee ? Janelle monae is the actual icon , billy porter too
The 90s has their icons and they outliers, the 2020s have their icons and their outliers (James Charles being one of those outliers)
She very much wore white makeup to make herself look really, really white.
yes, and it was hilarious! everyone needs to cool their shit. who gives a damn... whoopi was hilarious back in the day. miss her antics
She couldn't have done that opening skit nowadays. What a shame. She was hilarious. A treasure.
@oof the truth Her white make up was period appropriate. Elizabeth I was known for putting on copious amounts of white make up as she got older due to smallpox facial scars. Learn your own history ,you ignoramus, before screaming reverse racism.
@@umitencho
Yes Whoopi Goldberg was funny, but she was still doing 'White face.' You can cut out the mental gymnastics.
Dios como echo de menos esa generación de actores impresionantes! Que nostalgia joder me entran ganas de llorar de alegría! Crecí con ell@s! Gracias!
Sir Star Rydah how is playing a role...you now what nevermind
0:14 awn, Cate hahaha I love it how the first person they showed laughing was her, I mean, she was nominated for playing Elizabeth I that year, after all.
Ahhhh.. I caught a glimpse of Robin Williams - happy and still in his prime.
Its just a costume people...
I don't see how anyone can turn this into something racial...the paint is obviously part of who she´s portraying.
Eddi Jmnz there is so much going on in between the lines. but u have to travel down a dark rabbit hole to understand.
Gus W I think she did it because Elizabeth I was known for her heavy white makeup
in that case, blackface is just a costume.
"Good evening Loyal Subjects "
"I'm the AFRICAN QUEEN"
Queen Whoopi 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏

whoopi goldberg was AMAZING as queen!!! It's all about you, Whoopi, you DIVA!!!
I am a white english queen, this racist crap is cultural appropriation🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What made TH-cam algorithm recommend this to me after 21 years? But I still love it.
She was one of my favorites hosts! Bring back Whoopi, Billy, even Jon Stewart and I was so looking forward to Eddie Murphy. One thing about the Oscars, they pick the best. I'd even like to see Neil Patrick Harris. He cracks me up!
This woman is class! Legend!
She looks amazing.
Shut the fuck up you racist!
Imagine what you must look like to the rest of us...
***** She looks like someone imitating that particular Queen. Which is a funny pun on the African queen. Get over yourself. Not everyone is a wackadoodle.
Jenn Godfrey Tell it Jenn! x
FeelinErie explain
My mom taped this whole 1999 Oscars for a time capsule that I got to open this year. Incredible getting to see what life what like then. And how so much has changed also. Car ad’s for example blew me away. Didn’t show no price, interest, monthly payments at all. Just the specs of the vehicle. Bf explained that people back then could afford them without needing to know the price. Also when Robin William presented an award. For a moment it felt like he wasn’t gone. His comedy brought a light back. Happy to have the whole ceremony on tape forever
How brilliant, hilarious, and out of the ordinary, was that "So, but so Smart" speech!!!. Loved it!!. Long Live to her majesty, Whoopi Goldberg!!!.
I love her and can watch her all the time...one of the best Oscar
She's hilarious. What a comedic genius
@@00bankz24 I can tell you have zero knowledge of English.
It's Sophia Loren getting up from the audience leaving for some reason, for me!!! Love Whoopi!! She's iconic!!
The actors all appear at their prime. That was an era. 20 years ago. My God. Has it been that long?
That's the most hilarious entrance ever. Perfect
Whoppi's doing Bette Davis playing "The Virgin Queen."
This was 1999, not 1956. This was about Judi Dench in "Shakespeare in Love" and Cate Blanchett in "Elizabeth".
Um no that isn't what she was doing.
Blackface bad. White face ok
Dont get me wrong. I love Woopi. Just strange if you just mention the reverse of this skit you get fired with a huge check but labeled a racist, however here a standing ovation. People need to chill the f out.
Bonobo3D that is exactly who came to mind. Ms. Davis!😊
Whoopi needs to host again!!!
Khristian Morales she’s too left now, she would’nt make it through the door without finding something offensive lol
2002, this year. She will host it in the 74th Academy Awards. : )
I just love how no one can keep it together as soon as she walks onto the stage :-D
Ian Mckellen looks so young
Once upon a time, when Whoopi Goldberg and the Oscars were worth listening to.
1:21 Cate Blanchett played a young Elizabeth I in Elizabeth and Judi Dench played an older Elizabeth in Shakespeare in Love
Can we have Whoopi host again? She was always one of the best
Imagine having to make those people laugh in a formal event she's a living legend..
Her impression of Dame Judi Dench's portrayal of Queen Elizabeth is on point!
I believe she's actually doing an impersonation of Bette Davis as Queen Elizabeth.
@@johnsilva9139 It was the year of Shakespeare in Love, so it was Judi Dench, who had the same style dress and white face makeup
0:35 This was the last time Ed Harris smiled.
I think the queen of heart is taking over
Whoppi Goldberg painted her face white not because of 'white facing' but because it is part of the costume of this area - white lead as a mask. The dress that she is wearing is exactly the kind of dresses that Queen Elisabeth started to wear after Elisabeth I. took the following decision:
Queen Elisabeth I. used white lead to paint her skin whiter than it was.
@ Geez, relax. Don't you have anything else to worry about?
I like this parody of Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace loool
+arsenalrulez1000 This isn't a parody of Star Wars. This is a parody of Shakespeare in Love (1999). Judi Dench played Queen Elizabeth and wore that exact outfit. You can also hear the Shakespeare in Love theme song in the background.
Morgan Wipert Sure it is...
+arsenalrulez1000 okay? It's the obvious truth though.
Morgan Wipert I was only making a joke

Ok, we’re doing this! She’s fabulous!!! Go Whoopee!
OMG Cate Blanchett @0:14 is the cutest thing ever 😍
Yeeeees
She was delighted lol!
Baby Cate Blanchett's reaction
I do beleive that Whoopi Goldberg would be a great politician, she knows about people she understands about the world we live in, honest to a fault caring intelligent and makes people around her feel happy, may be politicians should start listening to her.
Does anyone knows the music that played during her walk?
The way she stomped out there and the look on everyone's faces...priceless. She is a part of a dying breed of comedy. A pioneer.
When she say "I'm THE African Queen" , I jumped on my bed like : fxckk yeaah, Queen! 😂😂💗
