  • When should you get back surgery for a herniated disc?
Dr. Eric Broadworth is a physical therapist and he discusses why he is getting back surgery.
If you have been having numbness and weakness into your leg and foot for more than 6 weeks and have not made progress with conservative care such as physical therapy, chiropractic, and massage then it may be necessary to seek out medical interventions such as an injection or surgery.
If you have questions about back pain, herniated discs or sciatica visit www.fuelhealthwellness.com or contact Dr. Eric Broadworth via email at eric@fuelphysicaltherapy.com

MRI shows broad herniated disc, having severe pain down the left leg, numbness, tingling and muscle atrophy. Started doing spinal decompression last two weeks, 3 days a week. However after each session the pain is even worst. I’ve seen an Orthopedic surgeon and he says I’m at the point of needing surgery. I opted to continue spinal depressions for another 4 weeks then go back and see him. I was in the process of becoming a personal trainer (exams around the corner). Now I’m worried that my passion for lifting, strength training and teaching may be in jeopardy. I really don’t want surgery, hoping it will go away on its own. The last 8 weeks has been hard on me.

I was in a similar situation. It's definitely best to exhaust conservative options if possible.

Hi. I hope you are doing good. I completely understand you. I am having my second my miscrodisctomy. I had first one on L4-L5 5years ago, that disc is great now, but the same symptoms for months for L5-S1 I am having microdiscectomy next month, honestly can’t wait to be pain free again. But it’s a nightmare….I really hope you are pain free now 💪

I have the same symptoms... and a black Lab. Symptoms have been ongoing for about 2 months and severe pain with drop foot started two weeks ago. I'm debating surgery, because what if it gets better on its own.

Hi Doc, I also have a herniated disk. Have you tried an inversion table? That did the trick for me. I was struggling with this and it was affecting my life, but after about a month of inversion, I was A LOT better.

I had been doing an inversion table for a few times each day for 2-3 months. Unfortunately it only provided minimal short term relief
