  • So many people suffer with back injuries like herniated discs and or bulging discs. In this video, Jillian speaks with Dr. Stuart M. McGill - a “distinguished professor emeritus”, University of Waterloo, a preeminent expert on rehabilitating people with back injuries to help us fix herniated or bulging discs, manage low back pain, and heal our injuries.
Dr. McGill tells us what to do and what not to do to heal safely. His advice is often sought by governments, corporations, legal experts, medical groups and elite athletes and teams from around the world.
His work produced over 245 peer-reviewed scientific journal papers, several textbooks, and many international awards including the “Order of Canada” in 2020 for leadership in the back pain area. He mentored over 37 graduate students during this scientific journey.
During this time he taught thousands of clinicians and practitioners in professional development and continuing education courses around the world.
He continues as the Chief Scientific Officer for Backfitpro Inc. Difficult back cases, and elite performers, are regularly referred to him for consultation.
His books are available at BackFitPro.com and also on Amazon.

Hi everyone, I have been dealing with lumbar disc herniation (low back) for 3 months now (still ongoing) and I've done a lot of research and I hope this can help anyone dealing with this (in my experience these are the things I'm doing that are helping me a lot, I am no expert)
    1. Your mental state matters a lot - if your back is weak at least don't have a weak mentality, try to have an iron mind and stay positive, I know it can be difficult/frustrating, but you need to believe you will get better.
    2. There is no "quick fix" for these types of back pains. Anyone thinking going to the chiropractor for one crack or taking one or two pills will fix the issue instantly, it doesnt work that way. These could last months or even years, however, you can quicken the process with proper care.
    3. Identify your pain triggers - For me it was sitting and laying down in bed too much, I work from home in my computer and I like gaming a lot so pretty much I sit all day. I had shifting pain from one side to another and also a LOT of back cracking; now I got a standing desk and I stopped gaming for a while and I've seen more progress with my herniation in 1 week than I did in 2 months when I was sitting and laying down in bed. You need to identify what movements are causing pain and try to stop them or finding the proper way to do the movement.
    4. Stay active/Exercise - Never power through pain and start with light exercise such as the Big 3 that Dr Stu recommends, pay a lot of attention to your form when performing these exercises, if they hurt, you might want to go for 10-15 mins walk and use heat/ice therapy and slowly start doing the big 3's. Muscles get stiff and weak so we have to get them strong so they can help support the spine. (Drink lots of water and avoid sugary foods, alcohol, etc)
    5. Good quality sleep - Our body heals the most when sleeping, so make sure you are sleeping in a comfortable position (usually on your back with a pillow below your knees is one of the best positions for back pain) Also if you get flares of pain, dont be afraid to rest in bed for 10-15 minutes, excessive bed rest is bad, but 10-15 mins can alleviate the pain.
This is all I can think of now, I wish everyone the best, we will get through this, fuck disc herniations!!!

Well said! I had herniated disc when I was 28 and now again at 52. The first time and now are quite similar, with terrible leg cramps, drop foot, and weak big toe. The first herniated disc issue was extremely scary and painful the first few days (horrible pain), then bit better most days and around 6 months, mostly better. I tried to work thru it but eventually went back to school and "yoga for back to heal" after classes. It was simple moves as some yoga not good for bad or inflamed backs.
This time, very similar, need to make adjustments in day to day, do right moves, proper core exercises, avoid sitting as much as possible!!!... and will get better, just takes time....
I'm kind of glad I had it in 98, before internet was full of contradicting info, as it was easy to follow a rehab plan with PT and cple books (a yoga and a dr rehab book full of exercises).
Do what works for you and everything in moderation. Both times I had set backs as went back to activities I loved or even work stuff, so set backs will happen but stay positive and do your drills that help your core and spine. Even basic movement helps, walks etc. Try to take slow approach, takes time as my back was great 2 yrs after first incident for 20 years, think I just over did it again.

For me the only thing that worked was cardio, the ol’ 30 day shred, followed by yoga focused back regimen, healthy Mediterranean (style) diet, alcohol reduction and boom. In 6 months my back pain was gone. I am always a Jillian fan from that day on. Common sense, no craze, you put your heart and soul into your work and I can see it. From the bottom of my heart. I am 27 years old and injured my back working out last year and have been suffering with pain ever since. I am a dental assistant and currently going to school for dental hygiene. The pain is so bad it travels to my hands and left leg. I have followed every advice my 3 doctors have given me. I have done steroid injections, and nothing has helped. I am seriously considering in dropping out of school and apply for disability. All of my future dreams, career, and things I loved doing are all being stripped away. Sometimes I wake up wanting to take my own life. At 27 years of age dealing with problems that can affect the future. I cant even function as a mom or girlfriend. Many doctors have not listened to my problem and just get me in and get me out their office. Feeling like a burden to everyone. I truly hope there is a light at the end of the tunnel for me.

You spoke TRUTH, there is so much bad advice worsening even the most common back issue of a low back disc hernia! I found it so upsetting and shocking-- how even the experts I saw didn't isolate the cause, or educate me to stop re-injuring myself, and how some even had me doing things that worsened the injury--that like you I've made it a point to share Dr. McGill's perspective. I now teach a class based on his work, just for healing the common posterior disc bulge or hernia!

Brilliant, Jillian thank you for this video.
Are you willing to share how you sustained your injury??
In early 2020 I injured my lower back shovelling some wet, heavy snow with a very wide snow shovel.
It was only the 2nd or 3rd snowfall the previous just a couple days earlier was super light powder - no problems with that one!
A few weeks later I was asked to be a pallbearer at a funeral and I made the pain even worse that day taking a corner of the casket.
Diagnosis with X-Ray: degenerative disc L5-S1. It took several months to recover that year but eventually got better.
I'll be following with with Dr McGill's (fellow Canuckle-head 🍁!) material for sure.
    Ciao!!

I had spinal surgery….best decision of my life! All the professionals over 2 years told me my chronic headaches & tight shoulders were tension & I needed to relax😠😩if they’d MRI scanned me earlier I wouldn’t have ended with a bulge in my spinal chord leaving me so close to paralysis at 32!
Surgery isn’t always the best route & their are risks but it was the best choice for me.
I know train & know my body inside out. I have another herniated discs that can flare up at times but currently lays dormant.

Dear Jillian, first off, do you have an identical twin sister... Second... your exquisite presentation as host for Dr. Stuart is exemplary for anyone desiring the "how to facilitate the best and most ergo dynamic - manner, in which to interview, direct, and focus the subject on the desired goal." That is getting the best information possible in the shortest amount of time with the fewest words possible. Just as Dr. McGill is the expert on disseminating the information regarding the body, both structural and functional, you as well are the expert on how to best script a dialogue that is elegant. We are all fortunate to have this really well learned master of the spine for hominid movement in the modern world, along with your precise method of "cutting right to the chase", with drama, testimonial support, and "alive" expressiveness of your emotional soul. For me, I can say, yes, you both make me instantly become a better human being. Getting such precious life changing and asserting information is certainly the reality I will devote my attention and energy to. Let's see if I can bring a bit of closure to my expose with a rhyme. It's January 7th, and about nine clock time I see, and this is the start of greater things to come in twenty-twenty-three. (for anyone who reads this... does anyone have any information about burning, tingling, cramps, numbness in the toes, feet, ankles, calves, pain and ongoing discomfort... and how there might be a link to the spine, disks, alignment, etc., At 5 years old, the city sprayed our town with DDT gas and the next thing I knew, I was paralyzed- then to be diagnosed with Polio, no rehab, but 6 additional vaccine Cowboy "with

Jenna, the expert on tarlov cysts is dr. Frank feigenbaum in Dallas Texas. YOU can Google him and get his number and address and he could probably help you remove the cyst or drain the cyst. IT takes a lot of pressure off and I don't think it's a dangerous operation, if the cyst does not improve on the spinal cord. If not removed, pressure from cyst may cause DEMYELINATION of spinal cord. Good luck 🤞

Shamsa I'm sorry for what happened to you. I'm wondering if you have gotten the BACK MECHANIC, especially the one with the videos from Amazon and if it's working? THE devil's in the details and they never give you the details these days on anything-- whether it's a financial transaction or if it's a physical exercise. I've messed myself up in small ways and I'm older and so those small ways have cemented into my body and now I suddenly have problems which I think is probably in part a post vax side effect, since I had a lot of other side effects from the vaccine doing guerrilla warfare in my body-- always going for the weak point that I didn't even know existed.
I'm thinking to get that book but I know what I need and you need and we all need which is actually what Julien was able to get because she's a celebrity. AND we aren't going to get it because we'll just common folk.
I so wish this gentleman Stewart McGill had-- back in the day when he was younger and still actually working full-time-- created more than just this training of people to work under him but actually a revolution in his field so that it would be more common knowledge when we go to the doctor to get what he is able to provide. Today I canceled my neurology appointment because I got worried that all they would do is give me drugs because all they're qualified to do as an MD is basically be a "legal"drug Pusher and I don't want that. I see my physical therapist for the last session tomorrow Tuesday and I'm going to tell her NOT to work below the waist where the pain real pain is. Instead just to concentrate on themiddle back in the neck which we had been working on before this sort of sciatica began. It's of course in the lower back by the sacrum--to the right on the buttocks and now it radiates to the right hip & thigh and then the left thigh & knee and calf. itt plays Kamikaze-- just moving around at will whenever it wants to; however it wants to-- which like the doctor says-- throws you into disequilibrium and takes away your confidence in your ability to manage your own life and to live your own life and your own terms.
I was definitely afraid to see a chiropractor from the get-go cuz I know all they do is jerk the lower spine and now I'm afraid to see an acupuncturist because I heard people got no relief and sometimes negative stuff. I had hoped to start swimming with summer and now I'm thinking maybe that won't work. Hopefully it won't hurt.
GOOD☘️ LUCK 🤞 to you and let us know if you get any relief from his books and videos because probably no one else can help you unless one of the people he's trained is in your city. God speed🕊️

This is a great interview but unfortunately 99% of us have no access to experts like Dr. McGill. I suffer with 2 herniated discs (L5/S1, and L4/L5) and the 2 discs above those are degenerated so I have all sorts of back pain. I've been suffering from these for years now. The original L4/L5 disc herniated 20 years ago now and I still have issues. I regret not having surgery when I was young but now doctors still shy away from surgery for me. I've had little to no help from all of the experts I've been to see. Orthopedic surgeons, physio, massage, Chiro, inversion table therapy, etc etc. I've had periods of reduced pain but have never been better than 50% back to the way I was. The video is good information but without a personal assessment which I'm sure would cost thousands of dollars or take years to get access to... most of us will never get access to this level of expertise. However, I applaud the effort. Reading a book is great but unless you have access to the mechanic that knows what to do with the information, it's nearly impossible to get help. I gave up hope long ago but since I have nothing to lose I'll read the book but I'm sure it won't help without the assessment and plan.
