  • An applicant is interviewing for a job as a bartender but the manager tells them the job might be a little "too fast-paced" and they might not "fit in" because of their age. How might you respond to this #WWYD scenario? Actor Sutton Foster joins John Quiñones behind-the-scenes to help guide this scenario about age discrimination.

(WWYD?) explores the varying answers with the help of hidden cameras capturing individuals who have been placed within seemingly everyday situation that quickly go awry. The individuals on this hidden camera show are forced to make tough calls when directly faced with situations of racism, violence, hate crimes, and other hot button cultural issues. Catch John Quinones reporting on these individuals as they make split-second decisions to intervene or mind their own business. WWYD? airs Friday nights at 9|8c on ABC.

In real life, they'd just take her application, hold it for a bit, and never get back with her/tell her no. It's unfortunate, but hiring discrimination in general often looks like that.

i mean it depends on the job your applying for.....if its a popular bar/club in a college town that mostly college students and teens go to.....I would have no problem with them denying an older bartender (male or female) they are trying to make the place more appealing for their customers......No different then typecasting in movies.......

    • @Lolybelle009
      @Lolybelle009 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@nyckhutch4347 But in this case, if someone rejected her like this in a real situation they would be catching a lawsuit. In addition, as unfortunate as age discrimination is, the rejection could be done more discreetly and thus protect the business from a lawsuit. They would just hold onto the application for a while pretending that they are considering her and then ultimately tell her that she wasn’t selected. Besides age, it also depends on what kind of drinks and audience the bar sells the most. Since the older bartenders have experience could make a much larger selection of drinks vs an inexperienced young one.

@James Doyle Is not really that easy. In America, many ppl think it's only a job if you get paid, so if you don't get paid it isn't experienced. I applied at Target, for the clothing position. I was denied bc I didn't had enough experience despite the fact I was a volunteer worker for 2 years, at my local food pantry working in the clothing sections, which I interact a lot with customers. Target wasn't the only place that completely ignore my volunteer experience.

The bartenders were mostly older, and the oldest was this really sweet lady she was about 50ish and she was the best bartender. Obviously I didn’t have any of her drinks, but we had regulars who would go specifically for her.

As a person with advanced degrees and also multiple barriers to employment, I can say I would prefer hiring managers and interview panel members to be direct.
The norm is: at the start of the interview when the interviewer(s) first see the candidate, they think to themselves “we can’t hire this person. He/she is ”
They carry out the interview, tell you that you are very good, and then never respond to your attempts to contact.
The takeaway message from this segment of WWYD is: it’s not ok to discriminate out loud.
And indeed 99.9% of people don’t discriminate out loud. What they do discretely, that’s another story.
If this scenario were in real life, the manager would take the applicant’s papers and then throw it out in the back. Nobody would notice anything out of the ordinary. It’s life.

Sarah: What do you know about being treated badly?
Man: What do I know about being treated badly? I'm a Black man in America. I know a lot about being treated badly.
I felt that! As a Black man myself, a gay Black man. No one should ever be treated badly.

I would report her if it was real. As a person in my 50s. My boss told me one time that she doesn't feel that I should do housekeeping anymore because I hurt myself on my job. She think I should be an office worker. I reported her.

Omg, such great patrons! I don't know many Jewish people by my ex was Jewish so I know what the JCC is, so when I heard that woman offer to put in a word there without knowing if she was Jewish, I was so touched. I'm such a sap for this level of kindness!

They should do a segment about dyscalculia. It's like dyslexia, but instead of having issues with reading and writing, we have issues with arithmetic and numerical information. Working cashier jobs, I've been targeted from many people for taking too long at the cash register, and for needing a calculator. Usually when I tell them its a disorder they back off, but it would be interesting to see if someone would come to our defense..
