    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
A fight breaks out when Gary (Vince Vaughn) brings Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) three lemons instead of the twelve she requested.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
A once-loving Chicago couple whose happily-ever-after quickly turned into a never-again finds their crumbling romance complicated when both parties refuse to move out of the pair's recently purchased condo. The Break-Up is a romantic comedy that starts where all the others end. The future once looked promising for thirtysomething couple Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) and Gary (Vince Vaughn), but lately it seems like a series of increasingly petty and intolerable squabbles have snuffed any semblance of romance in their relationship. Their confrontation endlessly fueled by mean-spirited suggestions of revenge tactics from friends and family and their stubborn refusal to budge resulting in an excruciating stalemate, Brooke and Gary ultimately decide to spitefully stick it out as hostile roommates until the weaker party eventually admits defeat. As the competition to drive one another out grows increasingly intense and outrageous, however, Brooke eventually comes to the realization that she's not fighting for possession of the condominium as much as she is fighting to salvage her relationship with the man she once viewed as the love of her life.

Vince's character was a mediocre boyfriend, typically some one who tries very hard in the beginning of the relationship then stops trying because he got what he wanted and assumes the partner will stick around, and he's a bit lazy and indifferent to others

It's not that he didn't get the lemons, it's that he doesn't care. He doesn't care to get what she asks, when she gives up and asks him to help with the table he doesn't care to help, he wants her to go to games with him but doesn't care about going to what she wants, he doesn't even care enough to show up at the end when she invites him to something he likes.
He just doesn't care about her, so how could she stay with him.

For all the people calling Jennifer Aniston’s character “crazy” and a “nag”: Gary was asked to get 12 lemons and only brought back 3. It’s only normal to go back and do a task properly if you get it wrong the first time. He doesn’t even acknowledge that he made a mistake. While I do think she could have gone out and bought them herself to begin with, he agreed to do it for her and did it wrong. This is on him, not her.

    • @vmalarrasa5378

Why did she have to go buy them herself? They are both living in that house and having a dinner party together, yet she had to run to the market, clean the whole apartment herself and then cook for everyone. And she isnt a stay at home wife either, she had to work too. He shouldve helped her do those chores, not just sit around and expect her to do everything

She went to work, cleaned and cooked that day, while he just thought his work for that day was done by making money and had the audacity to "relax" after work while seeing her finish all the responsibilities and tasks they have together. Everybody is forgetting the dinner party at the beginning of the movie was for their family, they didn't know each other's families. So if they agree to do this TOGETHER he have to care about the damned lemons she ask for .
3 LEMONS IS a metaphor for the relationship. He didn't deliver, he didn't listen.

I remember watching this movie when I was a lot younger but couldn’t put it in words why I hated him so much. Now that I’m much older and more vocal, I can say that I sensed the amount of disrespect he has for her thoughts and opinions. How he felt her “trivial” tasks were unimportant to him, so he’s not willing to perform the task she had given him wholeheartedly. Even when making that dish was a big thing for her. He is being outright selfish. I wish nobody has to deal with a partner like that.

I recall a time when a woman I dated asked me to go to the store to buy items for a dinner party she was planning. To her surprise I wrote down the list of items she wanted. When I got to the store they had almost all of the items on the list I made. So I called her and told her that I got all of the items except for two that they didn't have. Instead of getting some substitutes on my own I asked her for a few suggestions. I spent an extra 20 minutes at the store on the phone with her and got her exactly what she needed to prepare dinner and desert for the dinner party.
Men feel the same way when we buy items. If we don't find exactly what we want at one place we'll go elsewhere. We might even pay a little more to get exactly what we want or need be it for hunting, fishing, our motorcycles, cars, etc. So when a woman asks us to buy something lets not ask her what's the difference or why don't they get something cheaper. Get them what they want or need and they'll do the same for us.
Anything worth doing is never going to be easy. Vince Vaughn's character is dead on an ass. The biggest problem was they moved in too soon before they learned enough about each other.

The issue isn’t really MAN vs. WOMAN. The issue is one person being lazy, and the other doing everything by themself. Woman or man, if one person is doing 80% of the household chores and the other person does 20%, the person doing more work becomes resentful, and rightfully so. If you’re both working full time, but one person comes home and does nothing while the other person works AND grocery shops, cleans, cooks and does laundry, you get anger.

One person worked, cooked 3 hrs, cleaned the apartment, started to set the table, and was still working. The other person worked, picked up 3 lemons when asked to pick up 12, then came home and relaxed while the first person was still working. Can you see how unbalanced this is? And not only that, but every time the 2nd person was asked to contribute, they made excuses for why the 1st person should do the work. How is that fair?

Nowadays pretty much 90% of women have full time demanding jobs, but still most men expect to come home from their work and 'relax' while we handle everything else, which might have worked back in the day when the wife did not work but now it has to be 50-50 because we handle the same responsibilities. It is shown brilliantly here, she worked all day, cleaned and cooked while he was at his mediocre job and now acts like he needs to lie down on the sofa for 10 hours.

As a woman and not tryin to take sides here, 12 lemon centerpiece part was kinda weird but that isnt the point. The point is she asked for 12 lemons and he brought back 3 as if 3 close enough to 12 and then questions her why she needs 12, why wont she settle for 3, and ridicules her "decorative lemons" when hes the one who doesnt care and didnt do what he was asked. Hes not even trying to make the effort of bringing back 12, he isnt trying to fix his mistake or explain. At least be like oh i went too late and there was only several left at the local bodega, the lemons were really not good looking since you wanted decorative lemons, the lemons were really expensive at $3/lemon or something and said Ill go tmr or rn and be like "is there anything else I can get for you?" And buy some beers and chips for himself.

People going back and forth over here. She's right, He's wrong, He should have, She could have. Not taking any sides on this, let's examine the situation. They're a couple. She asked him to do a favor that he agreed, AGREED to do. When she said she went to the market, she obviously forgot the lemons so she, knowing that Gary got off later, asked him to do it, since he would already be out.
Now we don't know the time difference here. She may have got off work, went to the market, came home, and thought she had everything without double checking. That can be a bit odd, considering when you're putting everything away you would know if you left or forgot to pick up something. Or she wasn't thinking of a centerpiece when she went to the market earlier, and wanted it last minute. That takes us back to Gary, who gets off work after her. She asked him to pick up 12 lemons and he said that he would. She trusts him, so she goes on about cooking dinner. Gary comes home, KNOWING he didn't pick up 12 lemons, now how hard is it to pick up 9 more lemons and bring them home? Not hard at all. So he sets the bag down, and attempts to unwind. Okay. Let's stop. Did he not see an argument coming from the start, since he DIDN'T do what he originally agreed to do, which was pick up 12 lemons?
For one, Gary didn't know what Brooke was using them for, and she didn't say, but what if she needed it for a dessert, hypothetically speaking? What if she just wanted 12 lemons to have on hand? We as the audience know that she wanted them. Gary may not have given it a lot of thought, and was like, "Hey, 12 lemons seems a bit much, I'll just get her 3" without asking her why she wanted them, or even if she would be okay with having less. So far that's two strikes against Gary and a strike against Brooke because she didn't say what she needed them for. We now see that perhaps if Brooke had told Gary what she wanted to use them for, he probably wouldn't have cared still, thinking "Hey, why does she need a 12 piece lemon centerpiece anyway?" It's not on his agenda to see why Brooke would want it. He just didn't care and didn't feel like doing it.
People are saying he should have went back and corrected his mistake. At this point he's at home, and is not going to feel like going back out again. Plus, we don't know what time it is either. The guests could be arriving at any minute. Who knows, but looking at everything objectively, Gary is more in the wrong then Brooke in this particular incident, because the simple problem is that he agreed to do something for her, and didn't. It be the same had Gary asked Brooke for something and she said "Sure" and then comes back with something entirely different than what he had wanted. Regardless of the reason why, even if you didn't think to ask why, if you say you'll do a person a favor, 9/10 times we as people expect it to happen just as it was asked, and if it was not, it has to be a pretty good reason on why you couldn't deliver up.
Gary in this instant had no excuse other then the simple fact that he didn't want to. And rather than ask Brooke why she wanted them, as a way to see if he should get them, not that he should have a reason not to, as he had already agreed to get them, he decided to just come home.
That right there is adding fuel to a fire. It may not have caused the main argument between them, but it was definitely something that didn't hinder it from happening.
Overall though, this all comes down to a lack of communication, or in this case, Honest Straight To The Point Communication that Brooke and he finally decided to do towards the end of the movie.

I mean 12 is a pretty big number for lemons, but it was a specific number, so I've a hard time believing he didn't remember. He could've easily have said "they were out" or "the others ones didn't look good", etc. But no, he just straight up tells her that the use of the lemons was silly (despite the fact that the lemons were there anyway). The fact that he went to the effort to go to the store and only get 3, when getting 9 more would've taken less than a minute, and not caring shows his lack of empathy for his girlfriend. Seriously, she asks for 12 and you brought 3 instead? You might as well should've just not gone!

Let's all agree on this okay
Men see this one way and women see this a different way, that's life

The lemons really is not an issue- its how he said it. No sorries, not even try to redeem himself by helping with other tasks- it was just “woman, youre being unreasonable and too fixated on this, you should be the one to adjust all the time, ok?” With a sprinkle of manipulation of complementing her just so he doesnt need to help. Look, he’s not entirely bad-his personality is just totally incompatible with hers, and i think for a working relationship. These men, for their sanity, should just remain as happy bachelors who hire maids once in a while

She didn't really need help for an already set table, but just wanted him to get off his bum and be with her...He Instead trying to be left alone throws her a bone with false praise which she sees right through infuriating her even more.
