@Raymond Cyrus thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and Im in the hacking process now. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I enjoy both formats. I like the longer videos with this format to see more lulls in a race. And I like when you skip to lesson learning moments when you solo commentary. I don’t even race but I’ve learned a lot for group rides. Thank you
I am the guy in the black and yellow with yellow socks who chased back onto the group after the attack and as a note, I crashed the first lap and felt like shit in the 94-degree day. First off I want to say your wind direction is wrong, look at the flags after the start fin, the whole start/fin section was pretty much a tailwind. The team in the yellow and the blue had made friends before the race and was more like a 6 man team and refused to do any work when their guys were off the front. The whole race I knew they would do nothing on the backside so there was no reason to chase. At one point on the backside, I had an HR of 130 and was doing 150 watts. When I attacked I was just hoping someone would want to do more than 150 watts. The winner of the race was up the road and the 2nd place guy was friends with that team. If you want more footage of this race let me know, I hated this race and refuse to post my video.
I raced the Cat 4s lot less collusion going on in that race. His wind diagram is off it was more east. Sprinting out of the corner would crush people. Odd course for a crit but in that heat it felt even worse.
I love Gas's "Yo". One thought I had was at the beginning, when gapped off, if the pack is split then usually it's a matter of survival so everyone works together. Don't gutter those you're working with. Maybe half the road, to get rid of the tail gunners, but the ones taking pulls, you don't want to discourage them. Ditto in a break, initially if you want the break to work it might help to let others sit on. Of course, once someone attacks, or someone gutters, or in some sense the truce is broken, then you immediately gutter.
This duo is the best of your channel. I think I’ve said it before but I find your critique and knowledge the most enjoyable to hear, and Gas stations inputs I feel resonate with the layman and provide anecdotal humor and relief. Don’t change a thing. Hopefully some Gas Station videos about how and when you attack from 3k or 1500 would be nice for us non sprinters
10:25 There's an attack similar to how you said you'd play it on this course, Jeff. You could see people wanted to chase it but the headwind was kicking their asses lol.
The attack at 10:23 won the race no? Basically did what you said a few minutes earlier... big attack just before the headwind, and took advantage of the disorder in the pack. No one wanted to bring him back in the headwind.
The commentary on these videos is excellent and you guys are hilarious together! I don't even race but it's entertaining and informative as hell to hear experienced riders critique these races. Thank you from "one of the 7" lol
I live in south of Sweden. Down here we ALWAYS have at least 5 meter / second wind (18 km/hour). I live in Malmö and here the wind is from southwest 9 out of 10 days. Malmö are on the right side of Öresund (sea between Denmark and Sweden) and I always have headwind when I ride home. "Headwind is the best training budy, bud will never be your best friend"!
I love your voice! Please marry me! And as a Cat3 in Europe, the way they ride, whitout the wind support, is veryyyyy weird. Even in Cat 4 or 5, they ride with the wind over here. However unless you are part of a big team (5 or 6 riders during the race), there is not much "team play" in Europe.
I think that his intention of letting the gap open up at about 17:50 was that the other riders would brake too much before the curve or that they would take super slow lines like they did in the earlier laps. Unfortunately they kept their speed this time, that is why he had to close the gap again.
Both styles are good, the more casual style you guys seemed to talk more about racecraft and ideas, which I enjoyed. Some good tips I will take with me when messing around on my local loop. I really enjoy hearing the unfiltered thoughts of sports pros, especially this sport there are a lot of tidbits that will very much make you faster just by knowing them. When I get into it with local people (friendly competition) I use some of the race strategies and pretty much always it works out because the other often person isn't being smart when they ride. Given this is IL with basically no bike culture or enthusiasm for it. Anyway... Maybe sometimes (content depending) this casual format works and others a more formal one is needed (like if your trying to hammer in a specific point). Always interesting, always good vibes! Keep on riding!
@10:26 they do exactly what you were recommending in a previous lap. You said use the corner to create separation, and slingshot around, because nobody is going to want to chase you in a headwind. I don't think they ever pulled that guy back. Interesting video as the pace and style was very different from a lot of the other crit videos, even higher levels.
Can you pick a video from your channel that shows the best example of attacking? Not too much power so you blow up but that “smooth attack “ that you always reference to . Thanks!
@@georgehugh3455 well, that probably figures more in Iowa gravel and mtb racing....hopefully. lol Granted, I've only driven across the state (south to north) and haven't ridden there. But I do recall the wind being ever present.
Also being at this race.. you draw some nice tidy Arrows for the wind but honestly the directionality of the wind was very weird and changing.. i think the trees around the park were causing differences in the direction at various locations.. a little bit.. it was just very strange wind..
The heart rate data doesn't even seem believable tbh. This was a slow race, and in segments where the people he was drafting behind weren't even pedaling, he was still rocking like 190-200bpm. Makes no sense. Or maybe he has a heart condition and needs to see a doctor ASAP.
Shutting the door is solid advice. However, I don't think there was an opportunity to shut the door. It looked like a great smart move by the rider who punched that gap. Very smart early attack by that rider, imo. I think John was probably expecting the sprint to open up at 200m, not just off the turn.
He should have pedaled all the way through the corner and to the far right side of the road so people can only pass on his left, beginning with his "teammate"
I also thought this, that shutting the door super hard might have been aggressive. The rider to the outside was going visibly faster and was probably accelerating hard for a good part of the curve before he went by. Had John moved right hard there might have been a crash.
I woulda saved a bit of juice to flow smoothly and accelerate through the final corner carrying momentum through the turn sweeping right at the same time to "safely" shut that door on the right without slowing down and causing a pile up. Flow like Water.... -Bruce Lee
I think they missed an attack earlier in the video where the rider was on the right hand side and took off. I don't think I ever saw him again after that attack.
If the wind arrows on the screen would have been correct he would have absolutely nailed the final corner. From the corner it was still 320 meters to go. If it would have been a cross tail wind, more cross than tail like the arrows indicated, the rider passing on the outside would have provided the perfect sit for John's buddy who could have winded up his sprint closer to the finish. Going by the comments it was a proper tailwind and the arrows were incorrectly placed. This wind direction justifies the criticism of not closing the door. But Jeff and Chr/Gasstation didn't know that. So while they're usually spot on, I don't agree with them this time.
I'm a fan of your channel...! Should you ever make it to the midsouth, particularly Memphis, you have a bike you can borrow and you'll drink free (OMG, I offered that to a cyclist...I'll never recover financially).
After 500m in a leadout, why look back at all? He should have been heads down, emptying the tank to make it to the last corner; the sprinters job is to keep the wheel. +1 to the "in the drops" comment - if you're working for the last corner and accelerating out of it to give the guy behind you a gap to sprint into, you should be in the drops.
Probably Iowa and Kansas are the two best states for getting guttered and learning to echelon. Hardest RRs I've ever done were fast and flat around Iowa City - anything over 15mph wind will destroy most of the field. Huge midwest farmboys going to the front and smashing it. Dogfight. Dude was giving space to the other rider so they could work together. I'd keep away from the one big blue guy with the terrible fit - he's going to be all over the place and push you into the curb - very unbalanced. Clearly a sprinter.
