Its so disappointing to see this trend hurting another community. Im from Houston and I remember when the rapper Big Moe and others started this trend in rap music. Their dead now. This is a sad legacy fuelled by ignorance and misinformation.
John O yes, the rap group is called the screwed up click. They were from my neighborhood where Beyonce lived (true story ) they influenced lots of artist. Big Moe famously wrote the song" purple stuff". They called the syrup purple drank, lean or purple sprite and many other names. Big Moe died from heart failure due to years of drinking that garbage. You can hear Beyonce's tribute to their music in her song called "I been on".
Toni Hoskins yes I know, I'm nigerian American living in Houston. I think dj screw died like in 2001 I was younger than and remember. That stuff inspired their music, especially chopped and screwed tracks that evolved into modern musician like future you thug etc. You are fine though. What part of Houston you from?

OH, SANITY AT LAST. Thankyou. THE CRAP IN THIS DOCO AND IN THE COMMENTS HURTS MY BRAIN. I need to stop expecting people to have intelligence, don't I?!!
Probably because they allowed their faces to be shown. I don't get what's so "lol" about "African drug lords", cocaine floods into Europe via Africa, heroin comes to N. America through Africa, same with Khat, hashish - while more benign they generate cash all the same. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find African countries getting into methamphetamine production especially if production decreases in Mexico/central America. There's cocaine/crack and heroin throughout Nigeria on the east and Kenya on the west, S. Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Liberia, Somalia.. gotta be pretty naive or stupid to think they're just good hearted volunteers
+J. Fomoiri hash mainly comes from India, just saying I've bought a lot of import drugs over the years and lived in London for 19 years with very strong connections
I have no idea what foreign country produces the most, there's a lot of domestic varieties along with staples like Afghan, Moroccan and Lebanese. Nepalese is a rarity I've only come across a couple times, but Canada is a big place. Aside from hash Africa as a continent is a major transit hub for cocaine & heroin, that's nothing new either.
I am from the UK, Nigeria was part of the Old British Empire and we owe them a lot, many Nigerians fought with my Grandfather in the Burma campaign in WW2. I have worked in Nigeria a lot in may own work as a Captain on Construction vessels so I hope I speak with at least some little experience, this is one very brave lady just like her Father.
This woman is amazing. Her own journalist father was killed, and she still stands up bravely to do this, she is brilliant. But hey, let's focus on what's important here, her make up shade is wrong! Another Gabby Douglas. People piss me off sometimes...
Exactly. If you notice the one's making makeup comments are the "SJW's". They would be the first ones screaming homophobia if someone hurt their feelings. She is brave, intelligent, and strong.
Hi Stefany. Yes, the conditions in the rehab centre our team visited are appalling - even though some of the staff there are working hard to help addicts. They don’t have the funds to deal with the number of patients they receive.
Thank you for risking going under cover and show how sick this whole pharmaceutical industry is. I hope that this journalism will save lives and hope something positive will come out of it.
I’m worried for your safety after this tho...in Ghana,we have Anas Aremyaw Anas,an investigative journalist who does similar investigations but he uses a cover. For over 15years, no one knows who Anas is. I hope you adapt some form of disguise. I love your work...great job!👌🏾
Strong is she fighting physically, amazing is performing magic, brave is even bigger than my imagination. She speaking verbally with cameras on her. Its just like gossiping about ur friend with a camera on you when u can actual go to the person and talk to them. So that they can tell their stories themselves. Don't tell anyone's story if they have not given you the permission. I mean don't judge but this discuss and learn
The scary part is, I bet a lot of that syrup is not even genuine and is probably made in a Clandestine operation somewhere... Who knows what these people are actually drinking?
MarKo's Modern Life Facts. I wouldn't be surprised if the place manufacturing this shit is run by the C.I.A. or some other faction of this wicked government.
Exactly that ain’t real syrup that shit way too thick and it’s no way they can be guzzling that shit and still standing and you can’t be that active off no syrup like doing rape and shit
I said the same thing those manufactory plants were purposely put there what they're dishing out who knows. It's alot more to this tho 🤔and it's very obvious
Morgan Von Bogel I don't believe the government having that kind of control on people, their shouldnt be a government that can tell people what they can or cannot put in there bodies.
I love hip-hop and have been an avid fan for over 25 years, but I really do blame the hip-hop artists over the last few years for advertising this poison to our youth. Scary and sad.
OHMsweetOHM absolutely. My friends 15 year old sister (UK, mostly middle class area) said a lot of kids are taking Codeine, Xanax etc because raps new generation completely glorify it, I never used to think people would be so stupid as to be influenced over media they consume, but they are just kids at the end of the day.
Emzor knew about this because they are benefiting the most, to say they will investigate that criminal only means they will erase him from their business dealings because he was busted.
I have the utmost admiration for the journalist and the editor who went undercover. They have courage beyond what we could imagine and literally put themselves in the line of fire, to uncover and report this story. Fair play to them both.
Although I don't believe that codeine is causing insanity, I am more prone to believe that many of the people getting addicted have pre-existing mental illnesses which leads to them trying the drug as a way to escape their reality. When they no longer have access to the drug, the extent of their mental illness is more obvious. This is heartbreaking.
codeine by itself will not make you mental.. .you will go through withdrawls like any other opiate addict. so whatever they are drinking isnt real if its making them at like that unless they were already crazy and had a mental issue
Just based on the Title of this I want to say that my theory on Codeine addiction is understandable when ppl are forced to live in horrible conditions. I myself was once addicted to Vicodin during a very ,very bad time in my life and those pills made it bearable for me. They made me feel good in spite of all the things that were taking place in my life. This drug numbs pain, physical and emotional. So ,for all of the ppl in the world now hooked on this drug should tell us something. And that is ,people are miserable with the way things are and how they are forced to live.I am not condoning the use,,just saying that I understand it.Happy ppl who live good lives and have good jobs are usually not the ones using this drug.I feel for these ppl who are desperate for happiness.
So articulately said and a great point, many, many people are so darn unhappy. If the rich are killing themselves, I think we have done pretty well to be still alive. Nothing is hidden from the pharmaceutical companies and was it not 60,000 bottles sold per day? I would of thought these pharmaceuticals would be wondering why so many sick people but they know why but couldn't care less, as long as the drugs are selling???
Me too I feel for them I wish I can become so rich to help poor people... But they should try and stop using codine in any situation they can also try God if they find life unbearable He'll always give them every goodness
Oh yeah, because banning drugs works. I mean, look at America, we have banned everything and we have no drug addicts anywhere. I never see heroin addicts nodding off all up and down the streets of most cities in America.
Hey, we have the same thing in America, for a very long time, it started as syrup, then became sizzurp, then became drank, purp, dirty Sprite lean. Humanity is hurting, I love and pray for us all. I pray for compassion, love and acceptance, I will take the pain to save us.
Umar Mash This is besides the point though... I believe I just heard this fearless lady journalist admit that she lost (he was assassinated to be precise) her father to honest revelations of injustice and, allow me to say that again, AND LOST(at least his soul) her brother to this addiction...Your comment is utterly useless nonetheless. #PointlessBlaming #AppreciateTheProcess
It is really sad. I´m a former heroin addict and I am fortunate enough to have survived with help from my country in form of substitute medicine. I would like to say that I think this is a great thing theese peole (making this documentary) did. Well done.
Rema Bundles Africa has drugs too. They have a massive heroine problem for sure in Liberia and I’m sure across Africa they have the same issues, when it comes to addictions, as the rest of the planet except for a few Asian nations that will execute anyone that they discover is dealing with any types of drugs.
"some journalists pursue stories for fun or for money i am pursuing this for anger rage and love, i do it for the memory of my father i do it for the love of my brother" dammmm that is so inspirational especially to me who is studying how to be a journalist
Isn’t that because of inflation? A wagon full of money is worth like 5 American dollars. You better learn to count well if you have inflation like that.
Excellent documentary. Horrific circumstances. One thing I've noticed when watching any show about drugs.. THE DRUG DEALER DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE ADDICT!!!!
@Sezz Bo sounds like abunch of BULL SHID YU JUST SAID IN ANOTHER COMMENT YU WERE AND ADDICT YUR SELF NOW YU SAYING YUR WHERE A DRUG DEALING ADDICT WHO ONLY SALE TO STRUNG OUT ADDICTS UMMM YUR FIGHTING THE CAUSE
Does the bartender care about the alcoholic? Of course not. It’s supply and demand. As long as someone is willing to buy a product, someone will be willing to sell it.
@@siralbastoss2847 very true. I had a doctor once who was so quick to write me prescriptions but neva really cared what was wrong. I had enough sense to leave and find someone better.
Kawaii Lil' Fox i had a doctor who gave me 100 5mg percocet for a fractured bone in my foot yet denied my panic attacks and thorasic outlet syndrom. Ive have 2 surgeries and both times i only got 30 5mg percocet. I never went back to him after that.
I’m in awe of her courage and grit to continue her father’s legacy as an investigative journalist, after witnessing the endless threats against her father and the assassination. The exposé in this documentary probably made her and her colleague many enemies. How many of us are as strong as they? This is journalism at its best and she shouldn’t take their work for granted. Freedom of press must be protected as the foundation of democracy. Also, this really speaks to what kind of father he was also. The world lost a good man.
kole ivy lie actually it says “slow down on a codine diet” it’s saying people should slow down on taking codine it doesn’t encourage it so get your fact right
kole ivy, no, my friend. They only sing about it because it is already considered cool. They try to sing about things that will make them more popular. That shows how serious the problem is, if even the artists know about it. 🔆
Same in the western world u can find many UK / us rap songs mentioning it. Was on Snapchat this morning (I live in the uk) some people put it on their story drinking loads out of big 2L bottles. I know people who've had it before aswell
Just like here in America, punish the users and consumers of the drugs, and let the dealers (pharma companies) continue to poison the people. Everyone makes money, from the pharma manufacturers to the prison systems, and the average person loses everything. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
Wait, how is the person who chooses to do drugs the victim? That makes no sense, like, is a 500lb guy the victim of Mcdonald's because he can't stop eating big macs? Any person you know that's a drug addict, it's literally their own fault, and this is a classic way of diverting responsibility for ones own actions.
Fight Me! If it wasn't available there wont be a problem with addiction. Same thing with any kind of drug. A lot off people take drugs as a means off escaping realty and if something is easily available......
Yep and let’s face it a lot of people (not all but most) who abuse drugs have an underlining mental illness or trauma in their life . They need to fix the stigma of mental illness as well and provide more affordable support. Prison is just a bandaid . It might be some people’s rock bottom but most of the time it is not and even makes the person worse . Which reminds me here in America doctors have no problem throwing out pain pills , benzos etc and the government is so against medical mj . They want people to stay sick because of profit . Why do people think we are still in Afghanistan? The military is out there guarding damn poppy fields
Reminds me of what happened when crack was unleashed in the USA.... nobody knew what it would do until you saw your neighbor walking down the street trying to sell her tv for a rock. 😢
This documentary broke me! The team did a great job and this should be adapted into a short film for mass circulation in secondary schools and universities. The short film needs to be in different languages so we can reach young people outside the school system. We need to reach out to these through mosques, churches, and every point where young people can be found. We also need a crack down on Pharmaceuticals that make this drug, or an outright ban if there is a close substitute without these effects.
This is one of my favorites comments on this issue. Also, us Nigerians tend to live in oblivion. We tend to joke about things and act like they aren't damaging us as people. A country with the youngest population in the world shouldn't let they futures of her youth die prematurely from issues like this. BBC's documentary on Cults is another thing. Growing up in Amukoko, Apapa, Lagos, these are some the things I witnessed firsthand.
In as much as I would like to commend BBC for this documentary, they have inadvertently endangered the lives of the commentators by not conducting the investigation in a discrete manner. Their faces and voices should not have been disclosed.
Bad journalism, not only are they making shit up but its overly dramatic and sensational, they even have a scene where the reporter sits on the bed crying over pictures like a soap opera
This is why it is investigative journalism. Ok if not for them how do we know that it has gotten to this level in Nigeria. I hail their heroic efforts to bring this to limelight. Please do. They really deserve to be rewarded. The best shouldnt come from Western journalists. we in Africa are proud of this two.
Lovely exposé. We need more of this investigative reports from journalists. The FG has reacted by placing a ban of the importation, distribution and sales of codeine based products. I hope the ban is fully enforced to control the growing menace of substance abuse among youths in the country.
+Simon András Péter (SimonTheSorcerer) this statement shows you IQ level is low. why are you glorifying what is wrong and evill. Shame on you, by this statement it shows that you are a racist. How can you ever go far in life !! you can't as you decided to be wicked. hope you change
Simon András Péter lol white people are literally dying from opiod overdose and you are here talking about minor cought syrup with non life threatening widraws. If white get opiod withdraw they die, opiod is way more worse of a drug.
@@4chukwuebuka You don't know what youre talking about. Codeine is an opioid. Opioids are a class of drugs, not a specific drug. I think what youre trying to say is people in America and Europe have access to more powerful opioids. You also can't die from opioid withdrawal, unless you have a serious underlying health problem. You CAN die from benzodizepine withdrawal because it can cause fatal seizures. I assure you codeine withdrawals are no picnic either. It's a weak opioid, but the withdrawals are still miserable.
The codeine isn't what makes people crazy and causes damage to organs, all codeine does it make you addicted, but itself is not highly toxic. I've been an opioid addict most of my life (64 now), and started with cough syrup in the 1970's. I never had a problem with the codeine cough syrups mother got me for bronchitis, but when they changed to using HYDROCODONE, then I became addicted. Hydrocodone is as addictive as morphine, possibly more so, much more so than codeine. Hydrocodone is only made and used in the USA - no other country wants to use it, because they know how addictive it is. The huge opioid addiction problem in the USA begins with hydrocodone for many people, like me. This cough syrup epidemic in Nigeria is clearly about population reduction, using codeine as a bait to get people drinking other toxic substances mixed in with it in the cough syrups. I'm getting off methadone now, so I don't have to die dependent on opioids the rest of my life...........
Wonderful documentary. It hurts my heart to know that this is happening. Thank you for sharing this with the world. My prayers go out to all those effected by this addiction. Be it family , friends, and those addicted. 💜

Toni Hoskins okay. I live close to greenspoint

@LB CA and who else is supposed to be there stupid
LB CA you’re a product of low IQ I see
OH, SANITY AT LAST. Thankyou. THE CRAP IN THIS DOCO AND IN THE COMMENTS HURTS MY BRAIN. I need to stop expecting people to have intelligence, don't I?!!
Okay but why bbc didn't blur their journalists faces? This is so unsafe for them wtf, bbc.
I was wondering the same thing...even beyond this expose...drug lords or whatever could find and harm them...
yvonne nasi African drug lords? Loooooool
Wow what an interesting life & connection to my native country. I’m from London born & bred, I’m grateful to have such documentaries to learn x

They have to do what they can with what they've got
Hi Stefany. Yes, the conditions in the rehab centre our team visited are appalling - even though some of the staff there are working hard to help addicts. They don’t have the funds to deal with the number of patients they receive.

No it most certainly isn't causing mental insanity. Severe addiction? Yes.
it causes madness do your research
BeegtymeRawkstah - I totally agree with you
codeine by itself will not make you mental.. .you will go through withdrawls like any other opiate addict. so whatever they are drinking isnt real if its making them at like that unless they were already crazy and had a mental issue
You can hallucinate when you take a certain dose, and thus it can cause psychosis as well.

Chrisli Durison ... You got the point! God bless you...
I love u man
For pple who doesnt have an addicted behavior never going to understand very well the point on the addiction
Drugs are fillers ....gotta get to the root of the issue .😔😔😔
Best comment on this video
Whats the root?
untreated mental illness...just have to find which one
Sometimes drugs are just initially used for recreational purposes and maybe people will get hooked afterwards its not always a root problem
Damn you cute
I had no idea that this was such an international problem! Thanks for enlightening me with this documentary. 🙏
Fantastic insight. Great to know that this documentary has led to the ban of Codine in Nigeria. Well done, Ruona and BBC team!
And when we ban all the addictive drugs, what then?
It let to price increase not barn
Well done the BBC, maybe the BBC would do good to expose all the pedophiles in positions of power.
Oh yeah, because banning drugs works. I mean, look at America, we have banned everything and we have no drug addicts anywhere. I never see heroin addicts nodding off all up and down the streets of most cities in America.
Banning anything doesn't help. It simply goes underground.

Wow, what a powerful story. Great job reporting!
AND SOME NIGERIAN MUSICIANS HAD THE NERVE TO SING A SONG TITLED CODINE DIET!! GLORIFYING THE USE OF CODINE AND MAKING IT “COOL”
kole ivy just like in the U.S!! They try to glamorize it! Even though In reality it’s disgusting!
See I was wondering if that’s what they were talking about 😳
kole ivy lie actually it says “slow down on a codine diet” it’s saying people should slow down on taking codine it doesn’t encourage it so get your fact right
kole ivy, no, my friend.
Ok wtf when I was a kid I hated cough syrup
Christopher Shahi hahah same tho
I still do
Codeine is pharmaceutical only now tho and promethazine only for people with really bad allergies
@pablo just pablo I dont think it will be completely banned, like all narcotics when used as prescribed this stuff really helps ppl
@kkh369 oh okay and a lot of the promethazine being used illegally is from Mexico since its do cheap
Just like here in America, punish the users and consumers of the drugs, and let the dealers (pharma companies) continue to poison the people. Everyone makes money, from the pharma manufacturers to the prison systems, and the average person loses everything. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
TheYurpman Exactly. This is victim blaming at its finest.
I'm not surprised the corporate propaganda outlet BBC didn't love this comment.
I totally agree with the short movie suggestion. Its time our children get enlighten and feel the risk of drug addiction, starting from grade 4 (9yrs)
u should be happy bcoz bbc liked ur comment
This is one of my favorites comments on this issue. Also, us Nigerians tend to live in oblivion. We tend to joke about things and act like they aren't damaging us as people. A country with the youngest population in the world shouldn't let they futures of her youth die prematurely from issues like this. BBC's documentary on Cults is another thing. Growing up in Amukoko, Apapa, Lagos, these are some the things I witnessed firsthand.
What a brave couple of people. GREAT DOCUMENTARY. THANK YOU!
In as much as I would like to commend BBC for this documentary, they have inadvertently endangered the lives of the commentators by not conducting the investigation in a discrete manner. Their faces and voices should not have been disclosed.
Mr. J even the BBC Pidgin guy should have hidden his identity, his face shouldn't be known. I fear for him.

This is a first class investigative journalism by this two heros. They deserve awards.
They aren’t heroes. No rewards need to be given for filming someone in secret. They deserve the death penalty.
This is why it is investigative journalism. Ok if not for them how do we know that it has gotten to this level in Nigeria. I hail their heroic efforts to bring this to limelight. Please do. Simon András Péter lol white people are literally dying from opiod overdose and you are here talking about minor cought syrup with non life threatening widraws. If white get opiod withdraw they die, opiod is way more worse of a drug.
John O codeine is an opioid.
I bet you no one has a cough though.

Thank you so much! We’ve got a lot more investigative journalism coming on this channel - subscribe if you don’t want to miss it :)
