Do you want to know how to deal with anger? Do you want help with anger management? If so, you’re in the right place. This anger management video can really help.
    Noah Elkrief
This video is about how to deal with anger, and is part of my anger management series. It may seem as though our anger is created by what others have done or said, but it’s really not. If someone did something and you didn’t know about it (couldn’t think about it), then you wouldn’t feel it. After someone committed an action, in any moment that you don’t think about it, you don’t feel anger.
How to deal with anger? How to approach anger management?
First, you have to recognize that your anger is created by your thoughts, and stop blaming your anger on others, and events.
How to deal with anger? How to approach anger management? The second thing to do is to look at whether you believe others' opinions about you. If you don't believe others' opinions about you, then your opinion of yourself won't worsen, and then you will have nothing to defend.
I hope you find this video of anger management techniques to bee helpful in showing you how to deal with anger.

Never hate part of yourself unless you want to develop self-loathing issues or dissociative disorders.
Aiming to never get angry is a recipe for disappointment. It's part of the human experience and our biological makeup. Learning to be in charge of your anger is more important. Let anger be your friend, not your master.
If you try to deny/suppress it, it will eventually become your master and you will have utterly failed.

Your anger at your anger is circular. Accept that sometimes anger arises, this is normal. It's how we respond and what we do with those feelings that arise where we have the power to choose. And as this video lays out. A lot of those feelings arise due to trying to defend an imaginary self image against opinions that do not matter.
Go forth with peace and love in your heart and know that you are not alone x

    Noah,
I have struggle with my temper and anger since I was a child. I started by using my anger to make people afraid of me so that they would not pick on or tease me. Each time we moved to a new school I would end up in a fist fight to establish that I was not to me messed with. As time went on, I assumed this tactic worked because people "respected" when actually they "feared" me. I thought that my anger controlled how others acted towards me. Subconsciously I continued using similar tactics throughout my adult life. As expected, this has not only gotten me in many, many troublesome situations, but has caused me and people I loved a great deal of pain. I have spoke with a few different consolers and therapist, but never truly understood these feelings. I assumed the anger came a abused child that lacked a father, but never knew why I still reacted to stress with a quick explosion.
I am deeply grateful for the videos you made. You knowledge and ability to share it at a simple level has opened my mind. You have given me some tools to start working on myself and stop blaming others. These by far are the best, most informative video's I have ever watched. Thank you, AGAIN.. Jr

One of your first examples was your boss thinking you're bad at your job. It's significant that that was one of your first examples, because it shows quite clearly where your model breaks down:
I believe that I'm good at my job. That's just a belief - it isn't real, it only exists in my mind.
My boss believes that I'm bad at my job. That's just a belief - it isn't real, it only exists in their mind.
I received a paycheck last week. It's real, the money and the things I exchange that money for are real and tangible.
If my boss continues to believe that I'm bad at my job, I'm not going to have a roof over my head next month.
Unless you're somehow entirely self-sufficient, yes you do need external validation - not for your self-worth, because self-worth isn't a need, but because external validation is how you get money, and money is how you get things like food, and heat to cook that food.
The problem with saying that opinions aren't real is that opinions inform behaviors, and behaviors have real consequences.

I don't like to think of myself as an angry person so when someone touches that part of me through an action or comment I do find myself trying desperately to defend myself and change their mind. If that doesn't work and they still have a bad opinion of me I do get angry and criticize them. I could never figure out why I work this way but you've explained this process clearly and I'm relieved to finally understand what's going on. It's going to take time but I hope to keep this realization in mind so I can be happy instead of entering the same old struggle that leaves me sad and confused. Thanks, Noah!

I just want to say to those who are watching. You are worth it. If someone doesn't see your worth or have their own negative opinion about you or of something you did, don't waste your time trying to convince them otherwise. It's their lost, let them keep their sorted, negative opinion of you. Even if it's someone you admire or look up too. If anything, it should open your eyes to who that person really is and distance yourself because you are better than their thoughts of you.

This is an outstanding and insightful presentation of your overall thesis, I would like to broaden the scope from only anger (which comes from other/external) to include depression (which is self/internally focused) . I'm not sure how my anger relates to this. I tend to get angry when I'm asked to do one thing, but I believe a different thing is what I should be doing. It has nothing to do with whether I'm being insulted or not. Sometimes, it is absolute; like arguing whether 1 + 1 = 2 or not. There's a right answer and I become angry when I'm told that's not the right answer. I get angry or stressed that they are not listening to me.

what i understand after watching this video is that we are not out emotions . we can't judge people if they did something bad to us ,instead we have to ask ourselves : would the opposite be true ? were they raised in a bad environment so that's why their actions became that way? etc
and when he said that we are not good nor bad .we are just here, he meant that those are just believes and they are changeable . Any thought could pop in your minds but it is not necessarily true. some people think that they are totally great and they get angry whenever that get criticized .
no body is perfect we all have good and bad qualities in our life we have times they we feel helpless, unlovable ,and isolated but that doesn't mean we are always that unless we believe it and totally hold it in our mind.
All we had to do is not hold a believe and argue about it whenever we get criticized like if you think that you're attractive and you have references ,well that's okay but you are deluding yourself, you will suffer a lot because if someone ignored you and broke up with you , you will feel unlovable and unsettled..
But if you don't believe that you attractive nor unattractive then you could live serenely. .
And if someone told you that you are stupid because you did something wrong that's doesn't actually means you are stupid . it just means that you had a little information or experience about what you did and you can gain that knowledge from trying and learning .
thank you Noah for doing that video for us.

So i have one question, i have been able to get rid of my anger on almost every occasion but, when i play video games its different. If someone beats me at a race/kills me i get angry at them, and continue to rage and shout when i get killed/beat.
i know the answer to this is easy but i cant discover it for myself so do you have any suggestions? :P

    • @NoahElkrief
      @NoahElkrief  9 ปีที่แล้ว +30

+ScottishSwallow You are avoiding feeling helpless or worthless. In the moment, that you get angry, stop and ask yourself, "How does this make me feel about myself?" Then say to yourself in a very soft/sad way "I feel completely helpless/worthless" and see if it makes you feel those feelings. Then once you feel that, let yourself completely feel it, or see that it doesn't matter. I will be sharing a lot of new videos soon, and this will be covered.

I used your videos to let go of some beliefs I had about myself. One of them is that I am "good at my job". I understood that it put a lot of pressure on me and i didnt give up until i was free of that belief.
I noticed that I had to really "work" on beliefs until they are gone. It is not half an hour work. Usually takes few days, even one week. Why is so hard to let them go? maybe I have
the belief "it is hard to let go of beliefs"?
So, thank you one more time.
What about new videos? you promised it one year ago.

Hi Noah. I want to say that your videos contain some of the most helpful advice I've ever come across. However, I have a question. You say that the only way to get angry or upset over a negative comment directed at you, is if you believe it. But I ran into a situation a while back where some coworkers were spreading a rumor about me. I knew the rumor wasn't true, but even though I knew what they were saying about me wasn't true, I still got very angry. The idea of someone having a negative opinion of me, even if I know it's false, still upsets me. Why is this?

    • @NoahElkrief
      @NoahElkrief  9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

+Cory Smith You're believing that if they believe something negative about you, they must view you as negative. And if they view you as negative, you must be negative.

    • @xcfitzx

+Noah Elkrief That makes sense. Thanks!

    • @humanyoda
      @humanyoda 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

+Cory Smith There's another possible explanation. You may be getting angry because you believe that the rumor can hurt your reputation, which, in turn, will reduce your opportunities to get what you want. And that CAN, indeed, be so. Rumors CAN do that.

Not necessarily. You might not believe something is negative but you know that if you rumours spread others might believe them and your reputation ruined. So how should one deal with those who spread rumours. Ignoring them would avoid conflict but is that a solution?

    Hola Noah,
Interesting video, though "interesting" is just my "illusionary" opinion, he he he!
This is the first video I watch from you, and though it is a bit long, I found it worth watching.
I think your logic of questioning other people's opinions (negative or positive) or criticism (negative) first, instead of right away giving them power to affect us and react to this is something that many therapists or psychologists in general recommend, not only in terms of anger, but also in terms of self-esteem.
But I tend to "cheat" about this reasoning, as I tend to be an optimist and prefer to focus only on the positive stuff in life. So I have no problem accepting the good stuff people tell me or think of me. I try to ignore the bad stuff, but of course it is not always easy. :)
But what I am actually not sure of, after watching your video, is how your reasoning applies to the area of emotions. That is, if we do not let other people's "feedback", whether good or bad, affect us, how do you handle things like love, solidarity, kindness, etc., which are closely related to mutual "feedback"?
    Cheers,
    Ivette

    • @brdfshdg3788

ivecloptv he's talking more of your self image, the "self", the "you", your ego and how praise or insult both mean nothing about "you." The real you.
So it's ok to "be" kind, caring, loving, helpful, nice, funny, etc and feeling and expressing those feelings associated with those without believing that you are them or they are or anyone is "a Caring, a loving, a lovable, a good, a kind or a whatever person"
these are a different type of pleasure. It's more about "you" than them. Just being nice, good, kind, whatever just to convince/believe that "you're" a "good, nice or whatever" person rather than doing it for them. Its more selfish

If someone is getting angry at me, I don't respond to anger. I'm usually aloof, but when someone is annoying me or pushing me around I act cocky and sarcastic. If someone is bugging me I copy there voices and do imitations of them to their faces, they would back down.

  • @terrelldeaver7619

I understand now. I shouldnt be angry at anything because we are all just existing. We have opinions but those opinions stem from the people around us and are not the truth because no one knows the truth. We just created a "false truth" that says how we are supposed to be when really no one knows what is bad or good because no one on earth can create the standard for those things. No one is above anyone else because we are all just living. We are all the same. (EX: if I have "grammar mistakes" in your opinion, it is not that I actually have grammar mistakes. Who created the standard for grammar mistakes? A human being. Why is that human being above everyone else, and get to tell others what they are doing is wrong? That human is not better. Everyone is on the same level, yet we put others on higher level based on our opinion. Just because you think I'm not writing correctly, doesn't mean I'm not writing corectly. 😝)

    Hi Noah,
I've been watching your anger videos for a while now, and I need help, like serious help.
So my problem is gaming, I take it far too seriously and when something doesn't go my way, I break something, like my television, remote, etc. It starts to have chain effects, I need to repair it, which costs money, my parents get angry at me, I have suicidal thoughts, I need help.
    Thanks.

Watch all the videos of Noah, they are helping me a lot too..and his book is also very very helpful! have a nice day!

    • @ryak7419
      @ryak7419 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brad M Hi,
This sounds pretty serious in my opinion. Having suicidal thoughts is not a good thing. Its VERY good that you understand your issue and want to fix it. It means you're already half way there! :) It is also very good that you realize your behaviour is hurting other people and yourself! This is a wonderful first step in achieving peace and clarity, and solving your problems.
Gaming might seem like a problem but perhaps it is not the game that is causing the anger, but what the game represents. Think about what it means for you to lose or for things to not go the right way? Have you felt this way in other situations outside of gaming? I can bet that you have.
So perhaps the issue here is not so much gaming as self esteem? Perhaps you need to learn to feel better about yourself, to not put yourself down and to not let anything or anyone else put you down either. Dig deeper and try to find out what can really be causing the anger. Do you feel bad about yourself when things don't go your way? Perhaps there is an answer hidden somewhere beyond gaming?
I don't know if this helped, but hang in there and keep trying to overcome this! Because you can!

Ever since my Mother and sister died, nearly 18 years ago, my first born baby was only 2 weeks old and I felt as if life was cheating on me.Last January I lost my dad and I have no one left of my family, I got even more angry. You have now made me see that actually those events have nothing to do with whom I am, I am still the same and death is part of life. But then I realised we can change our language to be congruent with our experience by exposing our own subjectivity. For example, instead of saying "Noah is amazing at making TH-cam videos," we could say "I really enjoyed this video." Thoughts?

I don't agree with the part that you must believe the negative gossip people might say about you, because even if you know it's not the truth and you don't believe it, but if the rumor is bad enogh where it can ruin your reputation and relationships than of course you will get mad and upset it's human nature that doesn't mean you believe it's the truth about yourself! Hi Noah, Thank you so much for this amazing video. Just wanted to share about what I'm experiencing right now. In the society that I'm living in, plus size people always been objectified as slow, stupid or lazy. So when I'm growing up, I always need to work harder and faster to prove them wrong but at the same time I always feel bad about my achievements even though people think that I did great in everything and they always think I have everything I need in life but they did not see the struggles I've been through to get to where I am now. So as I maturing into adulthood, i managed to control my anger much more better but I always had problems to control my anger when working with other people because to me when I need to work with others, their performance will affect my performance too. If they are slow at their job, then my progress will be slow too. And this makes me feel so worried and anxious if people will say because I'm plus size so that I am slow, stupid and lazy. So I tend to get angry with my team mates. Do you have any tips to deal with this thinking or problem? Thank you so much.

It seems that you are still concerned about the opinion of others. You are defending it with anger. There opinion is not reality or a fact. This has been an issue for most of our relationship. I'm very hurt by his behavior and try very hard with different techniques to help him. His behavior effects me and makes me feel very depressed. It keeps me up at night and stresses me out to a point where it affects my personal life. I need to learn how to not get heated when the trolls on the internet start name calling safely behind the anonymity of the internet. I prefer people who say on the internet the same thing they would say if they were in front of you. In the real world I don't have any issues.

Anyone looking for validity in the comments section- it works wonders. Never thought anyone could ever teach me anything or calm me down but this video did.
Writing this to let myself acknowledge that now I will not be affected by anyone’s opinion.

I find myself trying to change people's negative opinion of me and get angry and frustrated when I can't instead of realizing that I don't have the power to change anything in other people's minds

Self confidence is not setting yourself up for failure it is embracing failure and seeing past it.

Thank you for this video Noah. It makes a lot of sense and I need to watch it again. Can I ask for your help? I'm chronically angry at my family for not helping me with my handicapped mother. They all say she doesn't need help and I'm stuck taking care of her full time. I've lost several jobs trying to take care of her. How do I not get angry? They are saying she doesn't need help when she does. She will not acknowledge that she needs help because she is too proud, but she confides in me that she does. And I need them to participate, but they won't. I don't know how to stop getting angry about this. Thank you.

crepella4 Get help from Community/Social Services/and/or any Church that has a Ministry for disabled/aged, etc.
Pride is a SIN. You are enabling dysfunction, of her and the other family members are letting you be USED UP... I do understand loving and helping your mother, that is right. GOD BLESS YOU But you are being CONSUMED. (I have been in your shoes.) If you DIED what would SHE "do?" Just imagine...get the help your local services offers. Take care... (of you-too.)

Yes, this video helped me to organize my thoughts. When I am feeling angry, my thinking becomes unorganized. After watching this video, I can now ask myself questions about what has made me angry, what am I trying to defend, is what they are saying true, why is the situation hurting my feelings (?). These questions will help me to find organization in my thinking vs. sulking and being depressed.

All anger is based on violated expectations. So, I adjusted my expectations to reduce my anger. So now I do NOT EXPECT myself or others to always be what WE 'should' be. Of course we make mistakes, we even do bad things. We can maturely deal with reality with less angry motivation. Good book: Taking the War Out of Our Words.

Hello, I've been having a really tough time. I went through a long period of depression back to back after having my two children. I've beem trying to remove stress from my life and I've discovered in place of saddness I'm an extremely angry and an explosive person 'right now'...
Anyway, your videos have helped me find clairty. Anger coping mechanisms weren't helping me because I forgot to breathe in the heat of the moment, so really what I needed to do was adress my anger and stop getting angry all together. Its A LOT harder than it seemed at first but it IS working.
What I want to ask is... a lot of what I do, like buying my kids toys for example, feels like a way of improving myself. Example- I went shopping to get them toys to make them happy and if they are happy that means I'm a good mom. Why do nice things if it's just to reassure myself that I'm good? How can I let go and just do GOOD. Especially, as a religious person I strive to be GOOD. Will it work if I say I'm not bad... I'm not good... I'm just being bad/good right now? Is this the mindset I should have? That it's not a permanent fixture of MYSELF? I'm struggling and have a lot of mom guilt and it's hard to 'dispell' that idea of myself so I can let go of anger like you instructed in the video. I usually get angry because I feel powerless and like my job/mother work balance is off so I have to make up for both.
    Sorry for the long-winded comment.
