  • Carlisle Airport is the UK's newest airport - and I was onboard the inaugural flight, with Loganair to Dublin, Ireland! Carlisle Lake District Airport last saw passenger flights in 1993, and has since built a brand new terminal offering flights to Dublin, Belfast and Southend with Loganair.

Great videos Noel, only recently found your channel and find it great. I live in South Cumbria and getting to Carlisle, is time consuming and expensive in comparison to say Manchester Airport where the train goes direct or even Glasgow or Edinburgh where the longer rail route allows advanced fares which make it cheaper than Carlisle and ongoing to the airports still works out cheaper plus way more destinations and flights are cheaper too. There was talk of discounted inter Cumbria travel to get people to the airport but I never heard any more and sadly Carlisle airport has been shut since April due to COVID. I have flown to Dublin several times with both Ryanair and Aer Lingus, once from Blackpool, and all worked out more convenient and cheaper than Carlisle would have done. If it reopens I do think they are going to need to get people from the rest of Cumbria to it easily for it to be a useful option.

The terminal interior looks more like a Commons Room in a college than an airport terminal, love it

Hope an Embraer E175/E190 can lands here at Carlisle Airport. Maybe at least an ATR72-500/600 will be able to land here too.

They would need to expand the terminal to handle larger aircraft, or build a new dedicate terminal next to the existing terminal which is current incorporated within the 'Stobart Business Centre'.

Ah... I see. Thank you for the info. This small airport is chic. They need to expand the runaway in that case.

Reminds one of Nantucket Airport as portrayed on US sitcom Wings. Only it had more flights.

Awww.. I kinda miss the 340's.. I'm not sure any are still in use commercially in the states. Although since the last 340 was delivered in '99, they're all getting old. Life expectancy of an airframe is 80,000 hours and 90,000 cycles!!! Holy crap!

Alandia Air is based in Åland, Finland, as you might guess from the name. Maybe the company is only Finnish on a technicality (Åland being a Swedish-speaking autonomous province of Finland), but it isn't Swedish.

I love stuff like this, thanks for posting. In New Zealand currently only security for aircraft with more than 90 seats. Although that is likely going to change :-(

Yes, that was a major ommission. Dualling the A69 on the Cumbria side (#willneverhappen) would help access to Newcastle airport - my favourite airport.

Very well made and interesting report. I used to fly in and out of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen regularly some years ago through work, but I never took a LoganAir flight. I wish I had now!
I can’t help wondering how this airport can be commercially viable though. Sure, people can use the airport to visit the Lakes, but the population of Cumbria, The Lake District and the Scottish Borders is so small that the numbers using the airport will undoubtedly be very small - and people living in the larger conurbations to the South and North will surely use Manchester, Liverpool or Glasgow. Time will tell.
