    Very important part here. ' I don't care cause this is my tap and die set, and I'll do what I want with it'. Freaking king dude. Thanks for the video bro!

    Thank you! I'm doing this on the end of a 454 right now. Easy out...no way, like you it didn't work. One thing, use a good drill bit. Cheesey Chinese drill bits won't go anywhere and you'll be very frustrated that it's not working. Go American HSS, or I used Bosch Titanium which worked good. Also, if you don't have clearance, like me in this motorhome, get a right angle close quarter drill and don't be afraid to cut your drill bits shorter to make it work. It sucks to cut good bits, but do what you need to. Use an angle grinder with a cut off wheel. Good luck, you can do it.

    I once drilled out a broken bolt in a cam driven fuel pump and drilled a hole into the cam, didn't seem to hurt preformance any. depth is important. I was 16.

    I've had to do that more than once on my projects lol .Also tapping oil is pretty much the same thing as engine oil ( says my machine tools professor lol) . Since then I've used that oil for my taps and they work just fine .I like the vid, I definitely think its useful knowledge to learn either through school or the hard way like me lol

      +jimbo booth Thanks, it's not my best video for sure haha, but I was bored. I didn't know the oils were similar. I've always used engine oil for cutting threads for taps and dies and for threading black pipe, and it always worked fine haha. It's definitely worth knowing if you're working on cars...a bolt is going to break at some point. Luckily I learned this in metal shop before I needed needed to do it, and I have called upon the knowledge relatively often lol.

      a DIY Car Guy I had to retap the holes on my h2o pump acouple of times lol ( im just too strong lol) . This is definetly something im going to teach my friends . Head bolts would be my least faveorite thing because of the location , if you drill wrong at all you ether go into the cylinder wall or the h2o jackets. What did you have the 442 in ?

      jimbo booth Nice, yea ya gotta be careful on the heads. The engine was something I bought to resell, it was in a C6500 Topkick truck haha, it had 58000 miles on it and had a factory overhaul on top of that, so that was a very good find. I am thinking of posting a video I took of the giant clutch plate before I shipped it out.

      a DIY Car Guy good idea . so you buy and sell cars ?

    • @aDIYCarGuy
      @aDIYCarGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jimbo booth I buy and sell everything haha. Cars occasionally, parts, tools, equipment, electronics, HVAC supplies occasionally, etc. My ebay is enduring_autos. I tried to add the link where the links overlay the channel banner, but it's not showing for some reason. My store is a little sparse right now as I just finished a seasonal job at Nestle waters, and I just reopened the store. A year ago I usually had around 100 listings up all the time.

    Thanks for posting this. I have to tap new threads for an idler pulley on a Fusion and you made this process look much easier than I thought it was gonna be.

    So did you make a new thread with the same specs as the bolt before? Like nothing changed about the bolt that goes in it just makes new threads?

    I have a cheap chinese motorcycle that had a muffler screw hole partially break....can the hole be welded and retapped for the bolt?

    • @aDIYCarGuy
      @aDIYCarGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmm i don't see why not, it might depend on the material the block is made of....might want to try helicoil

    • @cugir321
      @cugir321 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aDIYCarGuy Can't use a helicoil.....the side of the hole broke off. It would be best to just put a piece of all thread in the hole and weld it to the head (if there isn't a problem welding steel to cast).....then install the muffler.

  • @QuantumMind88

    Ok I have a question as I've never used a tap and die set before. Are you tapping it with new threads so you can reuse the original bolt or are you gonna have to buy a bigger diameter bolt to fit that tapped hole? I always thought that when you tapped the hole with new threads you had to use a bigger diameter bolt to fit. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks for your time!

    • @aDIYCarGuy
      @aDIYCarGuy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can drill most of the bolt out without hitting the original threads, then you can retap the threads, meaning get the old bolt pieces out of the threads, and then reuse the old threads. Usually it doesn't work like that and a bigger tap and bolt have to be used. It all depends.

    Nice job, you make it look easy, I've got to get a broken stud out of a 10hp marine engine, it's a 5mm stud, I just hope I don't break the 3mm drill bit I'm gonna have to use to get it started 🙄

    If you drill the hole bigger, and thread it, how come you use the same bolt to install. To me, you should a bigger bolt.

    Perhaps someone here might be able to help me with a problem I'm having? As I removed some old studs to install slightly longer ones to mount a set of Weber dual carburetors on a Volkswagen but for some reason I can't get one of the new studs to screw in, which feels like it wants to start screwing in but then will slip out. So will I need to rethread the hole? Thanks

      Maybe the pitch (metric) of TPI (imperial) is not compatible.

      Thanks I figured it out the stud and now have the carbs mounting and just trying to figure out now the best way to hookup the gas lines and if the electric fuel pump thats on the bus will be sufficient.

      I drilled my head bolt out last night with a hss bit after I spent 17$ on a solid carbide, to my surprise it had no problem, I did have a tip of an easy out I had to take a tiny carbide burr and get most of it out, I tried building weld up in hole then tried about 6 different tries to weld a washer and nut on but just would not hold, I finally slapped a brand new hss bit in and said fuck it imma try it, HF titanium bits would not scratch it, I even bought a carbide tip masonry bit to regrind if I had to and didn't even need it or the solid carbid, I seen you do it so I tried, great video brother! Sorry so long! 😆
