    Since thousands of people are willing to buy these games on impulse, why should the developer bother to make better games?

    • @sinephase
      @sinephase 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kaare Holck so they can make billions like mojang? :P

    • @alexanderwerner9294
      @alexanderwerner9294 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kaare Holck Ethics maybe? if that's not enough:
      Love, (maybe pride) for your craft?(Wanting to make a nice game instead of seeing in it just a means to get money).
      I see a lot of statements like that. Which resume to something like:
      "If people are so stupid to get exploited, why not exploit them"
      As if their stupidity or the possibility to do it, somehow justifies it.
      To put it into contrast:
      When another youtube video game critic asked a number of developers, what their opinions on the steam refund and refunds in general are. A number of (mostly) indie developers stated that they supported the idea of refunds because they believed that the gamer should have fun and get what he was promised, and if he's not satisfied they'd want him to get his money back.
      Notice "satisfaction"; as in "customer satisfaction" is their main concern (as it should be for any company, really), not profit.
      Those are statements (if true, sure some probably just lied), from people who love video games, and love the making of them, and want to make and share nice video games with their fellow gamers.

      +Alexander Werner -- I wish we lived in a world where everyone carefully considered what they spend their money on, but the reality is, that acces to new games have become so easy, many games now are bought on pure impulse. And everytime a developer puts out a game that has a few bugs, a poor story line or an annoying UI, and they sell 100.000 copies they think.. "Well we got away with it, lets make another!". Then that game sets the standard for what quality they can get away with. But when the next game have even more bugs, an even worse story line and so on, the standard drops further, moving us slowly towards mediocrity (if we are not there already)Most of us subscribed to Mack can probably agree that a game should be based on a creative, unique idea, that has been followed through and worked on to the best of the developer's abilities. Unfortunately are the opinions of 80.000 people nothing compared to the opinions of those millions of people that bought that franchise title, just because it was part of the franchise. (Or whatever reason they bought it). The developers simply wont do it the way we see it, because our opinions are in the minority. And if you're hoping for ethics to come save us, I fear in a world run by greed there are little room for such fantasies.

    • @alexanderwerner9294
      @alexanderwerner9294 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kaare Holck Maybe your question was rhetorical.
      I was simply answering it. Why would someone not exploit others for profit? Ethics, love and pride for his craft for example.
      Now if you already knew or felt that, then great, we agree. Often those kind of statements are meant to justify actions of greedy developers (or people in general), i'm glad you did not mean it like that.

    • @alexanderwerner9294
      @alexanderwerner9294 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kaare Holck I just wanted to add that i do not agree with your last statement. It seems pretty defeatist.
      Ethics are certainly not mere fantasies, and i definitely believe in the good of mankind and have hope for our future generations.
      I'm not going to tell you all my opinions and feelings here. Just wanted to add that i do not agree with that last statement,which again seems very defeatist, or at the very least pessimistic.

    everyone who is sick of shallow survival games like this one, check out Haven & Hearth.
    it's a brilliant PvP survival game with very deep crafting, with a big focus on exploration. it has massive villages and lonesome hermits, foods from foraged berries to pies, sausages and cheeses, there are wheelbarrows, boats and wagons pulled by bulls, you can domesticate animals, farm vegetables, grow bushes and trees, fish in rivers and lakes, mine ores until there's turtles all the way down, etc etc so much more than i can mention. if you don't want to craft, you can become an outlaw instead, attack people's settlements, murder unsuspecting travelers and take it all. the first 48 hours (and 7 hours weekly) are free of charge with full gameplay available, so you lose nothing by trying it out. try it with low expectations and be absolutely blown away by its depth.

    What's with building cars, and guns, and shit? How do does one build a leith to mill the barrel? Cars? Really, they better be steam powered, I don't see you fitting valves in cast iron... What am I saying, I don't see you refining titanium for the valves in the first place. Imersititus interuptus, I say.

    • @Myrskylintu
      @Myrskylintu 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Dimitre H -- That's so true. I could see one having a repair-skill so that you can repair or retrofit existing cars, guns and similar items within the game-world, using spare parts and maybe, a huge maybe, using rigged items or improvised stuff. But never ever creating cars and guns from scratch.

    Mack, you are a true reviewer... You pulled it right out of my mouth "Like umm in rust" As an indie developer when I’m prototyping a new game, I do some research, if the game exists or something very close to it exists, the idea gets scraped. Unless I can find a way to make the experience unique. This game brings nothing new to
    the table. Please for the love of MACK stop Macking reskins of existing games…

    Had much fun watching your review Mac. My initial thought when I saw this game was that it was some kind of a joke, since it's identical to Rust bar the graphics style. Glad to see it wasn't just me. Also, you hit the nail on the head in regards to survival games. They all lack some purpose and inevitably implode after a while.

    If this guy actually played the game and made some fucking friends he'd understand it is a quite good game for an early access, props to the Australian Dev team for making a game, that I know will progress into a large game. If you have 2-3 friends that are willing to put $20 of their own money into a game, it will last you months, it has it's ups and downs but it is an amazing game.

    the only sad thing about all those survival games is that so many are still unfinnished. the only complete one is dont starve (out of early access). i got about 15 early access games in my steam account and all are basically never ending projects. I mean early access itself is great to support the development of a game but in the end it gets boring before its even done and people are often just stop playing it. i enjoyed ark a while but after i saw everything had a trex, huge base and all that stuff i deleted it from my harddrive. i dont think i'm going to revisit it ever again so its kinda lost value for my personally. nowadays i just see early access and step back. i've been burned many times by such games (e.g. enforcer the promissing police simulator turning out to be just a horrible broken game, abandoned by its devs.) and i have a lot which are after years still in this dev progress. the game itself might be good and i'm off topic here as all see, i just want people to be more aware of what they get for the money. survival as a genre is the master genre in unfinnished games... i just know to finnished ones: dont starve and the, unfortunality totaly unknown unreal world (arcadic graphic but the most realistic and hard survival experience you could get in a game). the most important thing is therefore: can i trust the devs to complete this game as intendet or not?

    ARK: Survival Evolved is the best early-access survival game in my opinion. While you can play it like rust, and have the massive PVP raids and everything, there is more to it, as well. The vast amount of prehistoric wildlife in the game makes it extremely unique. The optimisation is an issue, though.

    Steam is just an ocean of survival crafting games at this point. You seen one, you seen them all. It's like everyone's just been copying Minecraft for the past 5 years. At this point, you don't even need a tutorial for people to figure out what to do in these games, all you need to tell them is "It's like Minecraft survival." And then like a programmed robot they'll just start picking up wood and rocks and 20 minutes later they've made the Eiffel Tower and a stockpile of advanced weaponry.

    This is becoming everything people wanted out of legacy that's y people like it. I don't have the game but in about 8 months I'd love to see if the infamy system is fixed and the animals don't have spasms everywhere.

    Do the "devs" just copy/paste the description to their "original" survival first person for hard core gamers? We heard the exact same to every single early access game. And you know the game is in early access before Mac even mentions it. I bet they steal the description from the unity pack they stole or bought.

      Tomas ten Cate The Forest is Singleplayer.... And is much more immersive when played in Singleplayer.

    Hey at least we got Empyrion, that's kinda nifty. I mean its sloppy and unpolished but for a fucking early access survival game at least there is enough content to justify the price tag.
