I would argue that many decorative objects do serve an indirect functional purpose. Like... all the posters you might have on the wall shows any guests that come over who might not know you very well yet what kinds of things you like. Posters from particular films, bands, TV shows, video games, life philosophies, etc.
My stepmom has this terrible habit of cluttering every available surface with crap. We have nice marble counter tops but you cannot see them at all for all the jars, contraptions, and just junk cluttering every thing. And it's not like we don't have shelves, we do, they're also all full.
Hello Internet makes me realize I should spend more time with my friends just talkin. We always are getting together to do something, like play a game, or watch a movie. But there's so much value in having day-to-day life conversations with people who you share a lot in common with but also have very big life differences with. That's what I love about the show. I feel like I relate to our hosts, but they don't have the same kind of nine-to-five corporate job I do, live in a different country, Etc. It's really cool perspective. And I should take more advantage of that with my friends to who are things like teachers, engineers, etc, and have made other significantly different life choices

I remember when i first listened to this pod i felt very much like i was more Brady when it comes to the whole clutter or no clutter thing... But i recently moved and in tryin to decorate my room i came upon a conclusion... I dont rly want a bunch of stuff in my house and even on my walls i dont want it to be takin up a lot of space. I want all the extra room i can get cuz it gives me so much more space to just sprawl out in. I do still want things on my walls, but when decidin what i want; its nearly all things that lay flat against the wall like stickers, glow stars, and wall mirrors. In fact, i ordered a few dozen hexagon wall mirrors to put around my room bcuz it is visually stimmy to me how things look when reflected in mirrors and even moreso when mirrors reflect on mirrors. I also got some hexagonal shelves but just a few of those which im gonna place in spots where im alrdy not gonna be usin that spot near a wall (eg above my bed, above my desk, next to my closet). Bcuz i dont even want a single centimeter of anythin hangin on the walls of my room that i may bump when otherwise just walkin around Ofc, im dyspraxic so i do bump into things, a lot; im constantly shuttin doors on myself or walkin into the corners of walls bcuz of such. And ofc i got only hexagon mirrors and shelves for decoratin my room cuz hexagons are the bestagons. I got them in gold and blue too.

Seeing that the apartment is cleaned-up after a previous guest should be totally the landlord's responsibility, In the meantime, you might try skunk-Out. I found this recipe in a long-ago issue of Popular Mechanics from a letter sent by a chemist who had needed to get a skunk's defensive spray off of his dog. Get a spray bottle at a dollar store, (because you won't want to take it back to London.) Into the bottle, put: 1 pint "drugstore" hydrogen peroxide, (3%) 1 tablespoon liquid soap (the purer the better, but perfume shouldn't matter too much) 1 teaspoon baking soda (not baking powder) Mix thoroughly and spray it everywhere, starting in the affected room. CAVEAT: use it up, it becomes unstable after a while. (The chemist didn't say what happens then.) Good luck!
I'm sure that Brady has found out the hard way that the smell of cat pee does not just go away after cleaning. We literally had to pull up the sub-floor to get rid of the smell. Surfaces like concrete can be treated with an enzymatic cleaner to break up the urine molecules but carpet, padding or unsealed wood needs to be replaced.

My mother has this small house in a barely a town area out in the sticks. She's older and was a smoker most her life, so her sense of smell is shot. There's a skunk that occasionally lives under this house, and she doesn't know about it, can't smell it, isn't aware at all. I have a very keen sense of smell and it's shocking that she's noseblind to this.
So sorry that some ludicrous people (the cat lady of course, not these guys) are doing horrible damage to the couchsurfing reputation. The landlord probably won't be taking in more couchsurfers or at leat is more cautious about it after this episode with the cat lady. And good people are suffering :(
Berkeley? Totally checks out. I was born and raised in the SF Bay Area, but spent most of high school and the remainder of my life elsewhere, but briefly returned for my week-long honeymoon; we had rented a room at a hostel in Berkeley, and to put it lightly without going into detail, we had to abandon ship after spending the first night and booked an exorbitantly overpriced last-minute Air B&B as a last ditch effort for sanctuary. All of the crazy and otherwise alternative lifestyle folks got condensed into Berkeley because everywhere else is inexclusively overpriced. If you're sane yet poor, you're lucky enough to have inherited rent control in some way, or get crammed into Berkeley to routinely spin the wheel of What Hot Mess Will I Deal With Today.

In decorations, I have a foot in both camps. I don't like _The Block_ style of furnishings where there's a bunch of stuff lying around whos only function is to look good _as long as no one is living there_ and just collect dust, but I also appreciate ornamental items which serve no function but are understated and out of the way. I have a nice piece of driftwood in a nook in my house. But I wouldn't go out and buy it or deliberately go looking for one.

Open all windows, direct sunlight into the room and spray any soft surface with a disinfecting carpet cleaner.
Enzyme helps more but is likely less available.
Water + vinegar solution with baking soda works well
GREY, You can get function from trinkets. Daruma dolls, skulls and fidget toys all serve a purpose.
Advice for the future. Arm&Hammer odor removers work really well for animal smells.
