      He said that an assault weapon is what Congress defines it as. That is the right answer. He shouldn’t be enforcing his opinions, just the laws as written. I don’t like the guy and I don’t like his views, but this was the right answer. It’s not the job of the ATF director to decide what an “assault weapon” is, or to enforce their opinion on the subject.

    • @samhouston5217
      @samhouston5217 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@CutlassOutdoors I agree that he shouldn't enforce his opinions IFF he gets the job. But he is not in the job yet and they were asking his opinion to deduce his suitability for the position. Also it is a a double edged sword, as IFF he gets the job Congress will often defer to him/her to make recommendations as to how Congress should define it.

He shouldn't have even brought that up and instead just pointed out that the term is a new category of firearm that is defined however congress wishes it to be defined if they pass a gun ban.

      There is no such thing as a defensive weapon, there are defensive tactics or counter assaults. It's deterrent through superior firepower. Armor and position is defensive. Weapons are offense and the best defence is a good offense. Shotguns are great assault weapons. The problem is liberals are not "intellectual" enough to see that the term assault weapon is two terms. There is the action and the noun. Assault is the action or an intransitive verb, and weapon is the noun, and what you are using to assist in the action. A fork can be an assault weapon.

    "Do you believe assault weapons should be banned?"
    "Yes"
    "What is an assault weapon"
    "It's whatever congress says it is"
    So tell me, how the hell do you say you're for banning something, that congress has not defined?! You have to actually have a definition in your head of what you consider it to be, to say that you believe something should be banned. What's really going on is he's, admitting without saying, that he's there to do the Democrats bidding like a puppet on a string.

      In a way Mr. Chipman did answer the question as to what an Assault Weapon is. (27:06 - 29:11)
      Sen. Cotton's question "How would you define an 'Assault Weapon'?"
      Mr. Chipman's answer "The ATF defined an Assault weapon as ANY semi-automatic rifle capable of accepting a detachable magazine over the caliber of a 22."

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@michaelsmith740 The ATF doesn't get to define anything. They're not a legislative body, they're an enforcement body. The notion that they would define it at all, is in itself a violation of the separation of powers, and at best, a misuse of government resources by the very act of defining it. Assault weapons is a phrase made up out of whole cloth, no different than if I were to call a baseball bat an "assault club".
      But you missed the point entirely. He's for banning "assault weapons", yet there is no definition of assault weapons, and he refused to give an example of what he believes an assault weapon is, yet believe "they" should be banned.....whatever "they" is.
      If he believes something should be banned based on a definition that hasn't been defined and that he won't opine on, then what is the basis for his belief in banning them? See, that's the logic problem with his answer. Of course we know the answer: He's a political shill and trying to dance around admitting his agenda.
      What if congress defines an "assault weapon" as something he believes isn't strict enough? Would he be happy with their definition of "assault weapons"? Clearly not. After all, he said an assault weapon should be what congress decides. But the truth is that's a cop out to try to force congress to define an assault weapon, which is a partisan political phrase. The real truth is we shouldn't be classifying or defining "assault weapon" at all. But Democrats want to induce a definition being laid out, and this guy is just meddling to try to help that along.....which again, is a violation of the separation of powers.
      What it's all really about is eroding rights. First it's automatic weapons, then it's semi automatic, and next you won't be able to own anything stronger than a BB gun. Meanwhile, the criminals will still have weapons. Guns are banned in the UK....criminals still use guns. The UK murder rate is almost exactly the same as the USA....and that's for a country 6 times smaller.
      Clearly it's not about stopping crime or killing sprees. It's about eroding rights for nefarious purposes. If they can erode one right in such a way, then they can use the same process to erode any other right. They've already done it, they just want to further erode them more. Then things like unpopular speech will be labeled as "assault speech" and banned, effectively allowing people to only say what the establishment allows them to.

    • @michaelsmith740
      @michaelsmith740 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@peoplez129 I was pointing out that MR. Chipman does have some idea of what HE considers an Assault Weapon to be based on his some 25 years working with the ATF as an agent, and that was the point of the question "How would YOU define an Assault Weapon?"
      One thing none of these people that want to ban the sale, manufacture, and importation of so called Assault Weapons is that 99% of Law Enforcement uses these SAME weapons...The AR-15 and variants there of. They are known as Tactical Assault Weapons.
      I for one am for people having what ever they feel they need to defend their home, family, and lives within in reason. I really don't see the need for a FULLY automatic rifle for home defense. I would gladly use an AR-15 style rifle in ANY caliber up to a .338 to defend my family.
