    I bought one of my subs one month, and installed it, and purchased the second one the next month, after watching this video, I did just what he said, installed it and played it. I never pussy footed around with it, or went easy on the subs, the "break in" was me using them how they were intended to be used and I've had no problems whatsoever

    I drive a fairly small car an old Datsun and I used to break in my Subs. I would slowly push them and push them until they would start to stink... a little bit and then I would turn the sound way down... not off. But let them cool down and repeat. After about a week of doing that they wouldn't stink anymore and you could turn them up for a couple hours at a time.

    2 questions
    1) What happens if you have 2 different subs in the same box sharing 1 amp? Say 1 lowballer 12 and 1 SA 12. Both dual 4 ohm wired to a final 1 ohm load.
    2) What happens if you have 2 different amps powering subs sharing the same box? So say you have 4 lowballers and 2 of them are wired to a 1k amp and 2 of them are wired to a 2k amp? Can you just lower the gain on the 2k to keep it somewhat even?
    Keep up the good content.

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) You shouldn't do it, it's not ideal, and in some cases it could cause a sub to be damaged. In your specific example it would play just fine, just may not perform as optimal as it could with matching.
      2) Refer to answer 1.

      It all depends on the application. In this particular application, the installation performs best with a higher Fs. For a musical application you would want it to be much much lower Fs. It's all relative to the bandwidth being played.

    If I had a 3000.1 amp and set it around 1500w on music would it be more efficient then having a 1500.1 set to 1500 I know it's stupid to ask but literally anyone I ask can't answer my question with facts I also think having a amp bigger then what I need would help avoid a little clipping daily

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amps don't put out a specified power amount, it is dynamic. So, a better way to look at it is set the amp to not exceed 1,500 watts under any condition. Now, that being said, if the 3,000 watt amp is 90% efficient and the 1,500 watt amp is 90% efficient then no, it won't be more efficient. It takes the same amount of power to make 1,500 watts. As far as clipping goes, if the 1,500 can make 1,500 watts without clipping then that's that. If it can't, then yes you'd avoid clipping by dialing back a bigger amp.

    (Without bashing another brand because that always makes the bashing brand look bad) Why does Skar suggest, if not demand breaking in their subs or risk voiding their warranty?

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My theory on manufacturers that suggest that falls into one of two categories. They either want an easy way out of not covering one (they could ask if you broke it in using their specific method and if you didn't adhere to it 100% then it's not covered, even a year later) or they want you to never play it hard enough to break it till it's out of warranty and it's not their problem.

    Some companies recommend that u do break in the sub a bit to loosen up the suspension and I agree with them as stated before...but to say it not needed as the sub will break in over time....is a reckless statement. Some people full tilt out the box....stiff suspension heat up the sub faster than loose suspension on the same amount of power. Also mixing a new with an old sub in a share compartment will have issues as one sub would not be able to cool as efficiently as the other....

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You should watch more of my videos, where I prove all of that wrong. Also, you know what the sub not moving much from not turning it up is doing? NOT breaking it in. The amount the sub moves not broken in vs broken in isn't effecting cooling, and the more you push it, the faster it gets broken in. If you paid attention, it was less than 20 burps to get the other sub broken in which was REALLY stiff. That's almost like playing it wide open for 1 minute to get them to the same amount of stiffness. If the sub won't take rated power for 1 minute while breaking in, is it a sub worth having?

    • @dwaynegentle
      @dwaynegentle 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EMFAudio I see ur point but its dont take away from the fact that at 200w a new sub is moving less than a sub that is broken it at the same frequency. If we are doing spl that's ok but on music things start to heat up. Point I'm making is it would take more that 1 minutes to break in any sub with a sub that have been playing for months. Your next video u should be to prove me wrong Is to play a sweep on a new sub and an old broken in one and measure the temperature...i would say start the test at about 300w per sub some 12" should be a good option. I can tell u now the old sub would be cooler than the new sub over a longer period of time, and that's at low power now imagine pushing 2k per sub.

    • @dwaynegentle
      @dwaynegentle 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EMFAudio my point here is not to say all sub should be broken in before played but if u need ur sub to be optimal u should give it some break in time. Sub get stinky when push hard out the box rated power or not as some would assume it's over power or ur amplifier clipping....test has shown lack of movement has made subwoofer heat up. When broken it properly its takes on alot more power and dissipates heat more efficiently.

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dwaynegentle What you're describing is heat cycling the coating on the coil, it has nothing to do with cooling. If having some break in period was critical to a sub not failing, why would I tell every customer (WITH US BEING A MANUFACTURER) to just play it normally, when I'd have to warranty any failures? It's because they won't fail from that. Yes it cools better when it's moving, but if it's not moving, you aren't breaking it in so it doesn't matter how much power is on it.

    • @dwaynegentle
      @dwaynegentle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EMFAudioi respect your opinion and recommendation as a manufacture, but as a user and a system builder i can tell u what i observe and recommend in the field. . but it would be great to do a sweep say 80hz to 20hz and lets see which sub fail first...using rated power. i recommend using your subs to do the test. here in the Caribbean we play for hours also we demo for hours, reliability is key to purchasing subs. i honestly haven't tried ur subs, but i sure will after it has been proven to be reliable under rated power without having to be broken in. 1 to 5 minute burp don't prove reliability, dissipating that heat built during an hour long play does

      It might be your box design
      If you design and make a diy box (there are plenty of tutorials on youtube using free software like winisd and making it using basic tools) you can get way more output. There are a few things that you'll need. The winisd program on your pc, basic tools like a electric saw, a drill and ofc the materials if you have the tools you can probably make a diy box that sounds 10x better then your current box for like 50 bucks
      In short:
      Your subwoofer box is probably more important then which brand of 8 inch subwoofer you bought. So Your box should be designed for your subwoofer and not any 8 inch subwoofer.
      I designed a 6.5 inch subwoofer box for a dd506d (2 ohms) the design software says it will play down to 20hz but i havent made it yet but when i have ill update you

    Do not play a new sub full blast out the box ... your spider is stiff af and restricting coil movement ...i u push too hard u may prematurely tear the spider away from the coil former and later down the road as u enjoy the sub ....it full tears because of how u treat it from new also u wont have full xmax which hinders the movement or travel of the cone which in turn hampers the cooling effect trust a sound guy with knowledge ..dont mind misleading info ...good subs arent cheap care your babies thank you

      It's inevitable, need isn't a factor. A procedure to make it happen isn't needed.
