THANK YOU for including Donna Summer. Apart from all the disco and EDM stuff, she was the first African-American woman to have a video on heavy rotation in MTV ("She Works Hard for the Money.") She was also the first African-American woman to win a Grammy for Best Performance by a Female, Rock category ("Hot Stuff"). AND she was the first artist to have 3 consecutive DOUBLE ALBUMS go to #1 on the Billboard hot 100 albums (Live and More, Bad Girls and On the Radio-Greatest Hits Volumes I & II). Donna Summer is mostly remembered for being the Disco Queen, but to me she’s much more than that. And what you described exactly sums up my thoughts. Apparently when “Hot Stuff” came out, a lot of people were freaking out over the song’s rock influences, with some clubs even refusing to play it just for that reason, but it turned out to be a great career move because it broke barriers. “Hot Stuff” was also apparently made as a response to The Rolling Stones’s disco-influenced songs such as “Miss You”.

Madonna should be credited with not only empowering women but also her challenging sexual boundaries by bringing LGBTQ+ culture and marginalized sexuality into the mainstream, as proven by her classic "Vogue", her controversial "Justify My Love", and more. Donna Summer was the first female and the first black artist to take 3 albums to the top of the Billboard 200 back to back (the just happened to be 3 multi-platinun-selling double albums) She was also the first artist to have 3 #1 singles and 5 top 10 and/or 5 top 5 singles in a calendar year (79). • @-mothra26-47
      @-mothra26-47 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@cwise0603 Disagree.
BOMT and OIDIA while not inventing teen/bubble gum pop, did revive it and made the genre popular once again. Before her, pop was grunge, punk, and rock. A lot of people didn't even consider her a real artist at first because she didn't write her own music, which is something Britney ended up changing in the music industry.
She ended up spawning multiple copy cat artists (that did eventually carve out their own niche). Britney was so influential that a couple artists (most notably Pink and Avril Lavigne started their careers by being "Anti" Britneys).
Blackout itself is one of the most influential pop albums ever. Without Blackout, a lot of modern day artists probably wouldn't exist (most notably Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Charlie XCX, Selena Gomez, and Rihanna)
While Janet and Madonna also pushed the envelope with female sexuality in media, Britney is the one who really altered the way female artists perform/present themselves. Let's not forget Britney changed the standard for what it means to be a popstar for the following generation.
This isn't completely because of Britney (Notably Christina and Justin) but Disney started to manufacture their own popstars after the three's success.
She also redefined the Vegas Residency scene. Before Britney, they were seen as a place of retirement for artists. JLO, BSB, Bruno Mars, etc all have started residences that have been successful because of Britney's influence. I know Cher/Celine had residences, but they didn't become as popular until AFTER Britney.
To say Britney isn't influential, and doesn't deserve to be on this list is pretty disingenuous.

The artists in the video are / were more influential in terms of what we know to day as popular music. The ladies you mentioned have their own lane. I'm not sure what that lane would be called though. Barbra had a few pop hits 30-40 years ago, but that's all I remember.

@@itsmissvsworld I could say the same about quite a few on this list. It's hard to make a list of influential artists because are you considering overall? Because then Lady Gaga and other modern artists should be replaced by older musicians. Do you mean in their genre? Then you shouldn't have several people that sang the same genre of music on there.

"Taylor Swift Scores 10th No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Red (Taylor's Version)' Swift becomes only the second woman with at least 10 No. 1s, following Barbra Streisand."
AND SHE DOESN'T EVEN GET A MENTION???
The fact that this list does not include Barbra Streisand is a seriously myopic oversight. What seems to be forgotten by the compilers of this list is exactly how much impact Streisand's career has had on more than just music. When she first became noticed in the early 60s, it was because of her being a completely new kind of singer with her powerful belting range and emotional investment in every lyric. She shook up the female recording scene, redefining the trend of bland, cookie cutter pop queens of the day. She was 21 when she signed with Columbia Records, insisting on keeping complete artistic control over her recordings, virtually unheard of at the time, especially for a female singer. By the time she opened on Broadway in FUNNY GIRL, she went from recording artist to major star by the age of 22. Before her, NO ONE kept their ethnic last name, nor their ethnic looking nose. She was urged to change both, but was steadfast in her refusal. She was known to get her clothes at second-hand thrift shops, which set a trend that can still be seen. She became one of the most photographed young women of that time, and was unique in the description of her looks as a "now you see it, now you don't beauty," redefining the very term "beautiful." She even started the trend of long fingernails for women by having 1-inch "scandalously long" nails. She became an instant superstar with the release of the movie version of FUNNY GIRL in 1968, winning the Academy Award for her first film, done by the age of 26. She later became the first and only person to have won Oscars for both acting, for her role in FUNNY GIRL, AND songwriting for "Evergreen," which she co-wrote for A STAR IS BORN. She became the Number One female box office star of the 70s, and became the first woman to produce, direct, write, and star in her own movie, YENTL, becoming the first woman, and still only, woman to win the Golden Globe for Best Director of a Musical or Comedy. Her recording achievements are beyond legendary. What's more, she literally paved the way for just about every pop "diva" that followed, from Whitney to Mariah to Celine; they all, and many others to this day, have given Barbra credit as their inspiration. All that is still just SOME of the ways in which this extraordinary, phenomenal talent has inspired, and continues to inspire, generations of female singers. To COMPLETELY overlook even so much as a MENTION of this icon is inconveivable and totally discredits this entire list.

Interesting compilation, but Joni Mitchell should definitely be higher on this list - if it’s truly the most “influential” women in music, rather than just the most commercially successful/popular. It’s not just singing/performing or even songwriting- it’s how much your music has influenced future artists and, I’d argue, how much control you’ve maintained over your art. Joni is up at the top of that, along with Dolly. It’s too soon to say how much future influence Taylor Swift will have.

I agree that Janis Joplin SO deserved a spot on the official list. Plus, where was Barbra Streisand? That was a HUGE oversight.

I like the research done on this list. But y’ll did Britney dirty for not including her anywhere since she was the blueprint blonde pop girl in late 90s and early 2000s and she contributed heavily in how music sounded during that era and many artists like Jessica Simpson, Mandy More and Christina Aguilera were pushed to follow Britney’s image and she also brought electronic sound to the forefront with her Blackout album in 2007 which influenced the sound from 2008-2012.

This was a great list, though I could quibble about the order. MOJO can be pretty USA-centric, so I was thrilled at their recognizing international divas like Celia Cruz and Selena. I was also hoping to see MIRIAM MAKEBA. She was Goddess in Africa, the diaspora and much of Europe, bringing the South African influence to western soul and pop. As for cultural significance, it could possibly be said that her voice helped bring down apartheid.
BTW, I would have also included Barbra Streisand, Nina Simone, Laura Nyro, Karen Carpenter... but then I just couldn't stop at twenty.

You should have added Celine Deon in that list and also Nicki Minaj in the honorable mentions. Nicki Minaj always supported women rappers and brought them into limelight. So I think Nicki Minaj is one of the most influential people in the music industry.

Nicki Minaj is an important female rapper but she's too dividing to be on this list, especially because of her beefs with other female rappers as well as her allegedly not showing much support to rape victims.

y'all are always leaving Cyndi Lauper out of these lists. She only makes an appearance on the lists of female singers with unique voices. Why not take the time to research her contribution to pop culture and influence on a generation of female singers. she didn't sell a trillion records, but while she was on the radar she hit the landscape hard and just as heavy as the major hitters; including Madonna. Let's not act like Madonna was the only trend setter from the 80's; Cyndi also set trends on its head. And besides with all the lists of female artist accomplishments, she's part of the small group out of the gang that has a multi genre music portfolio. Her philanthropy reaches many spectrums and causes. The only thing Cyndi is not, is controversial ...which could be why she doesn't chart as well.
