  • This was my stock Guillows build for the Facebook challenge. This is an old kit built with no modifications to make lighter or replace kit parts. I did use 1/8 rubber since the kit rubber was too old and brittle. I used the orange tissue that came with the old kit.

Beautiful, it reminds me of the days before radio control when aeromodellers really had to know their stuff to trim models to fly hands-off..:)

About 50 years ago, my friend made the same model kit, and made it so heavy that it did not fly.Way too much glue. It was his first flying model, and his last. At the same time he built his kit, I followed and made a copy from scratch, and it, yes, did not fly too much better, but flew. At that time, I had already built some kits, and that one I built was from leftovers. Before that, and since then, I have built numerous Quillows kits, and the greatest challenge was always to make them light enough. I think the easiest one to make light enough was the Hawker Typhoon. Of the scale ones, of course...

Wow nice flight! I'm really encouraged by your results! I've never tried the Guillows build/fly challenge, but hopefully I can achieve something close to yours.

Yes she is. I am in a small park so I had to keep the turn nice and tight to prevent her from flying onto the busy road.

Really good for a Guillows. Would do a bit better with a slightly wider turn imo.

Yes, but look at the small park I am flying at, next to the park are busy roads so I had to trim her to fly in a small area. It is almost like trimming a model to fly indoors. I have since moved and live on 11 acres, so the sky is the limit. I posted a flight of another bird dog I built a few months ago flying on our new property.

I really had to keep the turn nice and tight because of the small flying field.

Not for this flying field/small park. I was just trying to get a 20 sec flight for the Guillows Challenge without the plane landing in the nearby road.

Does any one who flies rubber power airplanes in the Charlotte NC area?

How's your 2023 Bird Dog coming? I'm still working on mine. I've been studying this video and had a couple of questions. Is there a gurney flap on your lower left wing? What adjustment did you make to get your plane to circle left? Did you use a single 8" loop of 1/8 rubber? Without braiding? Thanks for any help or advice!

I just moved and now live on 10 acres, so hopefully I can build another Bird Dog in 4 days. I used to fly in a small park, so I had to keep the power at a minimum and tight left circle with the tab under the left wing. I just used a 8 inch loop of 1/8 tan rubber

@@SCIGS30 Thanks that's helpful! Did you leave the motor peg per the plans or move it more forward?

What did you use to seal the tissue?
