    the scarf joint is a significant improvement and possibly lighter as the glue won't wick along the end grains.

      Hi Chris, scarf joins are a lot stronger of course but there actually is more end grains over a longer distance, but to be honest the weight gain would hardly be measurable

    I never thought of using a Lego board to build airplanes, Cliff. Great tip!

    Lego board is genius!
    My mate has just completed a renovation of a full-size Bird Dog. Hoping for a cheeky flight soon.

    Great video. Too bad you didn't show attachment of the wings. That's what I was looking for

      Hi Richard, I've just reviewed the original covering of the filming and it's not there either, what do you need to know, there's some nice closeup shots from 17:15?

      Thanks DR, I have to cut out a lot to keep the videos under a reasonable time unfortunately. I could have made three videos out of just the building the airframe but it takes a lot of time. We never stop learning 👍

    An interesting project, the Lego Jig an ingenious solution getting the fuselage perfectly symmetrical. Look forward to seeing her fly, thanks for posting.

      Thanks Andrew, I can't claim the Lego idea as mine but it's worth sharing. You can use much bigger blocks in a similar way for bigger models as well 👍

    Very much enjoying this build and your presentation of it. I have placed an order with the Leeds model shop on the strengh of this and will look forward to an autumn build when stock is due back in again. Looking forward to the maiden flight!

    What a lovely little build. Very enjoyable to watch this coming together. I bought a part built Spitfire (the same as the one you converted) at ModelAir and can't wait to get cracking on it. There's a few bits I need to re-do first 😉. Cheers!

    Very nice Cliff
    Always good to watch your technique
    The bird dog is a very pretty aircraft
    I built the Bob Rich 46 size model
    It flys a treat
    I went USAF for my colour scheme
    Though I did toy with the idea of the US ARMY ver with the dog teeth
    Thanks for the video

    It takes very good skill to build and fly a rubber powered model and is more fun and enjoyment. R/C is easy and boring after a while. You can only do so many touch and goes loops and rolls. Not much fun after awhile. F/F modeling is an Art.

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your wisdom there Allen, I agree, it's a shame that most flyers aren't builders, they could get so much more from the hobby, although these little planes aren't really for beginners there are plenty that are 🙂👍

    Great build of a great airplane. For me, if it were three times larger, it would be just fine. An electric motor and three R/C channels and off we go. Rudder assist and a strong rubber motor would be fine as well.
    Like J-3 Cubs, Bird Dogs fly great.

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The idea of rudder assist is very appealing isn't it Glick. I have done a twice-size KeilKraft Pixie for rudder / elevator which flies very nicely, similar to a Bird Dog, the video is a bit crude but take a look th-cam.com/video/af9bQ-uxRWQ/w-d-xo.html, cheers 🙂

      @@CliffHarveyRCPlanes R/C rudder assist at least, saves your legs, eyes and airplanes. Enlarging those old, smaller, great designs makes for very enjoyable flying.
      Peace and health, Cliff.

    Great new tips and tricks (at least for me)! Rewind your life --> lol I didn't find the video on how to do the filling. I'll keep searching. And btw, did you get to fly in the Tigermoth?

    Hi Cliff. My Bird Dog arrived yesterday and I have found that the formers C & D are not an exact match for the printed patterns on the plan. Just wondering if you had this too and ended up sanding them to match the patterns exactly before putting in the notches for the stringers?

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't notice any problems Phil 🤔

      @@CliffHarveyRCPlanes Sorted now, it was a minor manufacturing variance, probably do to with the die but nothing that a good sharp knife and high grade sandpaper couldn’t make disappear. I sometimes wonder if my OCD gets the better of me TBH!

    How do you put the windows on? How do you put the wings on? Thank you.

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dan, I glued the wings together on the main spar and trailing edge after covering then glued the whole structure onto the top of the fuselage. To see the window fitting have a look at Part 2 (linked at the end of the video), it'll give you some idea. Thanks for asking 👍

    450mm? That's going to be tight for an RC. Ok, this isn't going to be RC. I was wondering about the weight/load factor. I haven't built a rubber band version since I was a lad.

      It's perfectly durable with modern radio equipment Lee, yes ok we're fly quite fast 😁👍
