Building and Flying the Guillows Bird Dog for Rubber Power

- Here's a summery of my Guillows Bird Dog build with a few modifications along with a couple of flights at the Durham Fairgrounds, Durham Connecticut around September 2021. A fun project that turned out to be a good flyer.
This was my first balsa airplane that I built in McKinnie, TX in around 1966 when I was 10 years old. It didn't fly, of course, because I had no understanding of center of gravity or how to manage it. But it was a great experience. The box, plans and balsa pieces are exactly the same in my memory. Thank you for this neat reminder.
I had the same experience! Probably around early 1970's. It was fun to go back and assemble this one with new knowledge and see it really fly! Glad you enjoyed it. 🙂

Thank you for the comment Thomas. Many of the Guillows models are flyers. The Bird Dog is one of the better flyers. I'm told the Fairchild 24 is another good one. But the others in the same Series as the Bird Dog will generally be good choices. Just keep them light! Have fun.

Great job on this, with the mods to make the basic kit much more realistic and reduce weight as well. This line from Guillows does produce some good fliers. I'll have to try this one out after seeing what a stable flier and good looking model can be produced (with skillful effort on your part, no doubt).

Very nice John, rubber power so rewarding I got my first indoor meeting next Sunday after nothing for nearly two years due to C19 restrictions, can’t wait, i got the Dumas Bird Dog in US Army red/ white to try out.

Hi John - was browsing your videos and watched this build. I have printed color on white tissue but my results look like a windy day on a lake, wrinkles every where. I'm using an Epson printer with Drabrite ink. Any suggestions?
I'm using repostionable spray adhesive, very lightly and av5 minute dry time before placing the tissue.
Hi Mike. Sounds like an issue with the tissue attached to the feed paper. What are you using for adhesive to attach the tissue to the paper?
@@Watchingthevideos99 John - I'm using repositionable spray adhesive, light coat and 5 minute drying time before placing the tissue.
You might try skipping the 5-minute dry time. I spray and then blot the carrier paper with another piece of paper and then apply the tissue with no dry time. Your adhesive may be too dry.

Wrong The Army and AirForce used the L-19/O-1 in Vietnam never saw a Navy Birddog in Vietnam .
That information was taken from Wiki. "It went to serve in many branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, was not retired until the 1970s in a number of variants, and also served in the Vietnam War. It was also called the OE-1 and OE-2 in Navy service". You might consider correcting it there for future reference. Thanks for serving and thanks for watching.
What a wonderful little plane thanks for sharing all those tricks. But what about those little trestle supports? What a cute idea, are there some "guesstimated" measurements? Again thanks a lot!
Thank you for your kind words. I have several different sizes of the trestles. The ones I used for this video are 33mm high, 38mm long, 38mm wide. A friend saw them in a photo I took and actually laser cut a set for me. 🙂

I do have trouble with your captions.
My vision has deteriorated a lot in the last few years, so I have trouble reading just about everything.
Your captions are very good. They’re better than most.
The font size is good, and the contrast is excellent.
My problem is that I’m a slow reader now.
If you could double the time the captions appear, I’d really appreciate it.
I’ve tried pausing playback, but the screen dims and displays directional arrows.
I can’t read the underlying text.
Please, just give me a little more time.
Keep up the good work. I really like your videos.

Hi James, thank you for your feedback. I'll see what I can do about longer times for the captions. I just get concerned in this day and age, everything needs to be fast. I wouldn't want people to get tired of waiting for the next photo and not watch my videos because they are too long in duration. But let me try that on my next video and please feel free to provide more feedback.

Please know, I appreciate the captions you put up, they’re much better than any I see elsewhere.
Most of the time, captions are small type, in white, regardless of the background image.
Imagine a video of a model, far away, flying against a light blue sky, or cirrus clouds.
Then realize there’s a caption, in white.
Frustrating.
One channel I watched, the captions appeared randomly in the frame.
Your modeling is very good, as good as your videos.

@@jameshickman5299 I think you can make the play back speed slower, it is at the top right hand side of the screen by the captions button , every body take care in these STRANGE DAYS.

I agree about the length of time necessary for reading captions. I often have to choose between reading text and looking at the image. Of course I can pause the video, then lightly tap the screen to remove the overlaying graphics or just rewind the video a few seconds to rewatch. Honestly, these are not too difficult things, just sort of annoying. Good luck making everyone happy at the same time! The preponderance of evidence indicates you’re doing a pretty good job as is.
Gorgeous scale building and finishing of an interesting subject. Unfortunately, these small, scale models fly like shite, twitchy, too fast, and with no glide. I have also found that camouflaged models get "lost" to the eye when passing trees, etc., even if they are larger. Still, a great job altogether.
This model is really not what I would call twitchy. It's built quite light and flys quite well for a Guillows. And you can see the glide in the video. Really not bad at all. The Garimi clutch on the prop is helpful. Maybe not quite like some of my other builds, but still a fun project and good flyer.
@@Watchingthevideos99 "Flys quite well for a Guillows", says it all. I'm spoiled, I suppose. I have recently been flying an enlarged Lanzo Bomber and a Canadien championship Wakefield, both with R/C assist and electric power. 45-minute flights are common.

Yes indeed. It sure is. I've measured the pitch distribution along the radius and it's not consistent. I wish Guillows would consider replacing that in their kits. Thanks for watching.
