    I loved how the kid in the Penelope was underdeveloped. Why? Because we’ve seen “kid in a Gundam” 100s of times before. So it worked as a great nod to the history of Gundam, let viewers fill in their own blanks about the character, and didn’t insult our intelligence by inserting useless fluff into the story.

    The conversation with the taxi driver is hands down one of the best in all UC Gundam.

    One of the things I loved about this movie is the sound design. I friggin love the subtle sound effects inside a cockpit. It really goes well with the animation. For example, when Hathaway opened his cockpit door for his follower, Gawman to skydive into his cockpit.

      Hello, fellow sound design enjoyer. I suggest the Youjo Senki movie.

    Great video - glad you mentioned the digital compression with netflix as its one of the things I noticed, mainly with the outdoors sequence. Can't wait for the inevitable BD release of the film as I'll be picking it up. The one thing that I will say though is that I am glad Sunrise are really pushing for simuldubs for the Gundam franchise - something that started even with the Japanese copies of The Origin. I was not expecting this film to have an English dub so soon - but rather closer to the end of the year - yet we received one just a week after the Japanese theater debut.

      Wholeheartedly agree! My issue isn’t with the distribution - get it out there in as many legal ways as possible - but streaming compression does this thing a disservice. Eager for the blu ray here as well!
      And yeah I was really happy to see a dub released at the same time!

    Love how this is another gundam movie/show based on a gundam novel written a decade or more before, the other being unicorn

    The only thing I didn't like was a sudden drop in quality during the 2nd half of the movie like the beach scene that was used in trailers, all the other environments up til that point looked absolutely stunning.

    v much enjoyed the vid, I agree with almost everything you said and your jokes landed hard
    though I watched a pira- *ahem* an imported blu ray version of the movie and was able to see it uncompressed. highly recommend the experience, the animation shines so much more

    It's better than Unicorn and Narrative for sure!

    • @BadGunpla1
      @BadGunpla1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think that’s a little unfair comparison honestly. Unicorn is much more traditional space opera than Hathaway. Both are good in their own way. Narrative is a bland cash grab though.

    agreed, great set up, but i also look forward to a screening in a theater. the dark parts(battle), while striking, did seen muddied with the digital handicap of dealing with the extreme darks and ultra brights of sparks or blasts. the tvs/monitors made it hard for eyes to pick and choose what to focus on. but I see how if it was in a theater it should/could fix that. PS, now i want Ramen Tatsuya. have a good one dude.

  • @ORLY911
    @ORLY911 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The only thing i didn't like was how dark it was like you said, made the final gundam fight very hard to interpret. Hopefully part 2 has the fights in the day or just more well lit. Also the part where Hathaway and Gigi first discuss Hathaways identity in the airport was funny because there were two security standing right there as they were talking about that.

    Personally i didn't like one bit the mobile suit designs in this movie, they're all too bulky and disproportionate, with the worst examples being tye gundams themselves, Xi and Penelope. They should have stuck with Unicorn designs, or at least follow that style.

    Hathaway, like Char, is going to pay for not considering all of the untold collateral damage and piles of bodies due directly to their selfish lofty motivations, which they have convinced themselves are are actually selfless and righteous. And every bit of that payment couldn't be more deserved. Their "means to an end" way of doing things could have been avoided in a thousand different ways. This is why both characters are ultimately sinister.

    • @nickgennady
      @nickgennady 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yha did they need to shoot random buildings and people when there target was top floor of single building? Why did Hathaway stay in the building until last second and not leave earlier? Seems dumb

      @burniejarvis9298 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I ended up being more against him as the movie went on.

    • @yuel8428
      @yuel8428 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's actually one of the main things that the movie was trying to tell. About Hathaway's realizing his actions is rather selfish, and his way of leading the resistance is not the right one. He even admitted it himself during Xi Gundam boarding.
      But he couldn't go back now, he's in too deep in that act to revert the damage he had dealt (when he was holding a crying Gigi too tightly). So now the only path for him is closing his heart, and try to make his vision true while minimizing casualties.
      The movie IMHO had done its job really good about Hathaway's introspective thoughts.

    There was only one thing i didnt like. The movie felt like i was watching an episode in the middle of a season 2 anime. There was a flashback from noah, when a girl jumped out of a ship behind noah on a big gras field. Or the fact that i didnt know who the bad guys are and who the good guys are. Even after the end i dont know exactly. I know this movie is from an anime series that has a lot of animes. But from what i heard about the movie, i thought it would be an alonestanding movie about noah. And the movie was more talking. Of course there where fitght scenes like on the spaceship oder at the city. But it was really not that much. And the end fight was not really long and intense for me. The film was very good but as i said, it felt like watching an episode in the middle of a season. Maybe i had wrong expectation, but yeh..thats just my opinion.
    (Sorry for my bad english)

    Your completely wrong , this movie is a good character movie , the gundam fight is bad , for some reason they changed from the regular animation to this 3d computer generated weirdness , might as well not even “ gundam” name in the title

      Bullshit. Gigi needed to get capped in an alley the minute she figured out Hathaway. Sloppy, but not unexpected from the franchise talking about the Earth dying while showing beautiful blue skies and unpolluted waters.

  • @turtle-tank8231

    I cant Stand Hathaway he killed Chan and thinks he is char became a terrorist a egocentric narcissist with a mobile suit that wants to wipe you out to save you so the earth can be saved .

    • @Phyllion-
      @Phyllion- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the whole point of his character. He, in fact, does NOT think he's Char and actually laments not having his and Amuro's clear moral and idealogical compasses. Instead, he is stuck relying on the desperate need to do anything he can to not let their death be in vain.
      It's shown during the middle portion of the film when he's genuinely interested in Gigi's take on what he should do as Mafty, the taxi driver telling him that normal folks don't have the luxury to think a thousand of years into the future and when he verbally expresses it as he falls asleep just before the raid.

    • @711ramen3

      The Earth doesn't even look like it needs saving. Maybe if they gave it a Blade Runner urban hellscspe instead of a tourist destination it'd make sense.

    Long time gundam fan and it was wasn’t that good Hathaway is a screw up the story is stupid he jeopardizes the whole movement because of one sassy female because it reminds him of quess which was one of the most annoying female characters in anime history Hathaway is a failure

    • @jeffsmbuloke768
      @jeffsmbuloke768 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you think about it the end of Hathaway isn’t supposed to change really anything. Much like how unicorn’s Laplace conflict changes none of the late UC canon. I also dislike Gigi, but I’m interested on how she could change. If Gigi wasn’t apart of the story and if Hathaway succeeds. That victory would be meaningless if it doesn’t change later UC events
