As someone who's known about Hathaway for years, seeing it animated is great. As long as they don't change the ending for some reason it's going hit hard.

dude i'm so down bad for Gigi when Pablo Uchida release her Character Sheet and when i watched the movie, she's this emotionally manipulative and taking advantage of both or "MC" is downright made me fell out of love for the character 🤣 but man this movie is something else. not only narratively, but in every aspect of it. the cinematography is insanely good, the animation, especially those city fight with civilian POV is a masterclass, not to mention the sound design. the sound design of the Minovsky Craft System on Penelope is insane i rewind it many time just to hear it again. it's so frustrating that there;s no definitive answer to when the sequel will be released. like come on it's been like how many years? also, that Taxi driver conversation with Hathaway is me and my gf favorite scene because it's like a contrast between high ideology and privileged people feel about the people they represent, and what those people actually thinks. the taxi driver don't have time to think about the gradiose idea when he can't even pay his own bill.
I love that, almost in every scene Gigi is doing her job as fan service. Because she's portrayed as very attractive in the novel.(And things.. if you know what I mean... 👀)

And the ending of the story really hits hard if you read the original novel (that was eventually covered in SD Gundam games). Flying dorito is peak Moriki abominations of all time
Book spoilers ahead: (Zeonic Scanlations has all three FYI, they are worth reading because these movies will take a LONG time) Mafty is not the aggressor, or even evil; the Manhunters and the federation are, and Mafty is a necessary spark. UC Gundam got less and less subtle over time, and Tomino is EXTREMELY loud about Hathaway being right, except maybe that he's not killing Federation leaders fast enough. Hathaway's downfall isn't that he's misguided or wrong, it's that he's so obsessed with sacrificing and punishing himself to find redemption that he just cannot follow through beyond, well, a flash, an explosive show of force that creates movements beyond Mafty's end (it is heavily implied Kenneth starts an anti manhunter movement, which is a major player in Gaia Gear). He has a weird self destructive messiah complex but he's not Jesus, he's John Brown. And John Brown was a hero
In short: Hathaway is right, but too hung up on his own shit to follow through beyond the Big Raid, even Kenneth knows he's fighting on the wrong side by hunting Mafty, and his death at the end is not Tomino warning us about the dark path of tearing down oppressive systems, it is a rallying cry to defend ourselves from getting to that point.
This is my opinion as well. I think Hathaway and Mafty are far more justified than pretty much any other Zeon/spacenoid independence faction. They aren't gassing colonies or dropping them on random cities, they do surgical strikes to cut the head off the federation leadership. A lot of their terrorism can be attributed to Feddie propaganda, like in the 2nd novel where the Feddies try to pin the Oenibelli massacre on Mafty. I'd say it's one of the most moral resistance groups of the Gundam franchise outside of the AEUG.
@@cabnbeeschurgr yeah, despite how terrifying it is from the ground (and it really is, one of my favorite scenes in all of Gundam) the attack on the hotel is about as clean as it gets in UC. a diversionary attack on the military base to draw the bulk of the attention away from the city, and a clean strike on both towers on floors so expensive that only earth government officials and people hoarding enough wealth to be The Problem could afford them - members of the class directly benefiting from the poisoning of the earth and the enslavement, deportation, and imprisonment of its poorest people. I think the second movie will make all that more obvious (the oenbelli slaughter is fucking heinous) but even in the first people are, for the most part, on Mafty's side. The cab driver has a point about not having the time or privilege to think 1000 years ahead when he's already on the verge of deportation himself, but his other point is that Mafty still isn't killing enough cops. I wouldn't be shocked if the movies try to keep things more grey, but tomino is absolutely screaming 'sometimes doing a 9/11 is cool and good if things are at that point' the whole time
Hathaway is peak Gundam, just like Unicorn, can't wait for 2 and 3, and what they have in store for the future of UC. Also fuck you Xi is peak mecha design

Great review, if that's "mid" I'll take mid-tier all the time. Hathaway was hyped for decade among gundam fans but this movie blew my expectation entirely. It's Tomino as it's peak writing wise but it could have been a trainwreck if not for Shukou Murase's incredible directing on this movie

Also, the Nanai Miguel manga that you couldn't find is called "Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack: Beyond the Time." It's cover is a picture of Char and Nanai. It can easily be mistaken as an ordinary Char's Counterattack manga adaptation, but it is 100% a complete backstory of Nanai herself.

There is no compelling arguement that I have ever heard that can explain to me why somehow most of Gundam UC, or any Gundam series is anti war. If it was truely an anti war story then it shouldn’t take any side in a military conflict (cough cough Gundam UC and every other series passively taking sides with the federation or the system to the point where it breaks the story(looking at you Iron Blooded Oprhans), nor should it (or its fans) present people like Amuro Ray, Bright Noa, (or especially), Kenneth Sleg as war heroes or heroic characters.

Lots of his work is coming from what he saw at the time, compare the character of Kamille(Zeta 1985) and Bellri Zenam(G-Reco 2014), you can find a distinct difference with his view of teenagers in different era.
