This video was so helpful to me when I found it in the mid 2010s, it explained a few struggles I had with chao before that. I felt excited understanding after all those years where those struggles were coming from. It felt like I discovered the chao garden all over again but better because it made more sense.
Now it’s been years since I’ve last played in the chao garden, I forgot how many years ago but this was back when my ps3 worked and I was actually still in high school so about 5-6 years ago now at this point and I watched this video for the cancellation of certain types which i inevitably forgot unfortunately so im really glad that your videos are still up because I managed to find this video again for the same reason and I couldn’t be more thankful 😁
Good video. It is a shame that the concept of Chao never made it past this era of Sonic. Its so weird to go back to your chao garden in 2015. Its like going back in time, or going to place where everyone used to hang out but no longer does. Anyway, how long does it take your chao to be reincarnated? And do you know how real time translates to chao garden time. I was told that one hour of being in the chao garden your chao is in is equal to one year.
I can feel you. even after those 3 years im posting a reply, they still don't have another chao garden inbuilt sonic game. I've read that you need to be 8-12h in the chao garden (real time) until your chao is ready for the reincarnation/death. it may be inaccurate, but that's what I've got the closest by research. I *guess* 4h translates to about 1.5 years in the chao garden.
Dreamcast: 1 hour of game time = 1 chao year Gamecube + all other ports: 3 hours game time = 1 chao year Note that time only passes while you are in the chao garden.
This just in: Some evidence has suggested that the garden time in the Hero Garden does accelerate second evolution faster, next best is Neutral Garden, and finally, garden time in the Dark Garden doesn't seems to increase second evolution as much (in which you'll have to rely on Stamina more than garden time). Just a FYI, so if you're having some trouble, maybe moving the Chao into a different garden may help.
Cool I may have to move my baby shiny normal chao to the hero garden. I'm raising it to be a run/swim type. Also, how do you rub the egg to boost chao hatching?
no wonder why none of my chao in the dark garden go through second Evo. literally just questioning why it isn't working but did so easy in hero and neutral garden
Well that can't be because I raised a Chao to be a Shadow lookalike and... Okay, the first time around, it didn't seem to work, but I concentrated the second time and I now have a Shadow lookalike Chao. And I did it all in the Dark Garden.

crab0309 haha I actually did study patterns of raising a chao but back then I started throwing just chao fruits to them it was the fastest way to raise all stats and somehow my cousin knew a trick to copy items and selling it! it was amazing game!
You probably have a Dark/Run/Fly. To get a Dark/Run/Run, balance out the Fly stat (so give some Swim) and then spam Run-increasing items. The spikes should look more red at the end result.
Randoms called me crazy. Schoolmates called me no life. Friends left. Some never came back. I ignored. After 14 years of hear this. I now question myself. Why do I still play dis 2001 game?... Like if u cri everytim (jk)
The original Sonic Adventure 2 for Dreamcast initially planned for online capabilities, but were scrapped in the final version. These online features were essentially what now makes up the Chao Kindergarten.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS FANTASTIC VIDEO. This helped me truly understand how chao evolution works in the game. No other source gives this good of advice. I can now get any kind of chao I want at any time. thanks again friend.
Sapphirechao Thank you oor your videos! You're so knowledgable on Chao and know how to talk about abd present well, I would pay you to make more videos!
Thank you SOO much! My chao kept evolving into a swim type and with the help of your video, I instead got it to evolve into a chaos chao as intended. :)
More videos will be underway, but given the time constraints of life in general, daily videos would be near impossible X-) Nonetheless, I hope to at some stage develop a mini series which would be uploaded every few days or something similar.
Hey, when it comes to making Fly/Power/Run wouldn't it be easiest to just use peacocks for the swim levels instead doing the balancing act? Since the Peacock levels both but only influences the Fly stat? Since Power and Run are dominant over Fly you can just use peacocks for the same above reasoning and then influence Power/Run after?
Yup that's certainly one way to do it! You could spam peacocks for first evolution (while the Chao is a child), when the Chao has evolved and you're happy with the swim level, only giving Run/Power should do the trick. If you give lotsa peacocks after evolution, your Chao may be placed between the Run+Fly or Power+Fly corner, in this case then you'll need to do some swim balancing.
I meant making first evolution fly, power, or run by using peacock to teach just enough swim so they won't drown and then leveling run or power before first evolution. 0o0
Glad you enjoyed it! The Dreamcast I believe may have differences between the Gamecube version which I'm more familiar with, but that may only apply to the breeding mechanics rather than Chao evolution and lifespan.
Lots of green run Drives/Animals, make sure to balance raising the Chao by having both a Hero (Sonic for example) and Dark (Shadow for example) character raise the Chao, and keep it neutral.
What is the forth evolution the mega evolution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ive recently watched a few of your videos and i never knew there was so much to do with chao and such O___O Im baffled that systems that seem simple, are actually quite deep! you can do a TON!
I was aware of everything in the video barring the slider and how it works. That much was rather informative. I appreciate the time you took to vocally explain this to people who have trouble reading things on their own. Well done. I'll continue my quest for more all S rank on my SA2B HD! Currently have 1 all S right now and he happens to be a normal colored one. Pretty lucky, yeah? Subbed.
+Radori Thanks! Glad you enjoy the video. I find reading walls of text can be pretty tiring, that's why I like making videos like these to tie in visual and audio to get the message across more easily. Good luck on getting an all S Chao!
+Sapphirechao Yeah, I appreciate it! I just finished watching your FAQ videos. Your knowledge is something else! Looks like if I slip up I'll know where to go!
I was really little when I was first playing this game (like 4 to like 8) and every time I made a chao it would turn out to be either swim or neutral. Now that I have been playing it again for the last two or so years ( yes, it has been that long, almost 8 or so years) and I had no idea until when I started playing again and went to the internet to learn about my favorite lil creatures. I figured this out. Also I figured out you could have a neutral type. I know, I was dumb. Thanks internet for teaching me last year. This is like my 3rd time watching this. Yay mayo
Yeah, it helps when you can get lots of one animal from one side (e.g. skeleton dogs from Pumpkin Hill), drop off the animals as Knuckles, leave, then come back a Rouge to use the animals. Only problem is when you bring in more animals/drives into the same garden, it can exceed the item limit and so removes the oldest item slots. Same thing I find happens with fruit.
When it comes to tracking second evolution I use an excel file to track the influence for second evolution. Yet this vid is a big help to chao owners. Can't wait to see another Chao Garden Let's Play video.
Thanks for the info, Saph, SA2B's the best Sonic game in the series, imo, and heaven forbid Chao Island (website) finishes their own thing, and I used that for a long time until I saw this video... you are a MUCH better source of information on Chao than they are, you should do alot more of these "technical standpoint" kind of videos! ^-^ Very useful!
Thanks Kai! Chao Island can be a great resource, there are plenty of knowledgeable people there. But I find conveying the information into videos is much more accessible than forum posts. I hope to cover other topics in future (genetics and S rankings) done in a similar format as this one. :)
I did not know about hybrid evolutions before! That's not covered on Chao Island (yet)! Thank you ^w^ I love genetics and chao so putting both together has been a hobby of mine for almost 4 years now xD
Your general hour measurements are reasonably accurate. Stamina is also a factor, so second evolution can appear much sooner or later than you think. But of course the older the Chao, the more obvious the changes :)
YT randomly suggested this video to me this many years later and I watched it out of nostalgia. It's kinda crazy to me to see all these numbers and stats since I played *a lot* of this game, and the chao part specifically, but it was on Dreamcast where there's no way to see any kind of stat so I was basically running around blind as a kid trying to make my Chao better without knowing what did what at all and judging their skills by their looks alone. I had no idea they even had actual ages with numbers to them, just had to guess when they were about to evolve or reincarnate.
This game was my childhood but there was so many possibilities of changing your chao to different things. I just randomly give them drives and animals. It took a lot of patience for the chao to cooperate
Its amazing how complicatingly good the chao garden is behind the small funny babis, and how much better it could be if you could mod it into being more of a game then the main game, like this stuff is near skyrim levels of modability just with less actual mods.
The time they reach Second Evolution will vary from Chao to Chao, so it doesn't matter too much if it occurs sooner or later than you expected. The age 3 thing is just the middle point where you may start to see changes.
I included animals that apply to both SA2B and SADX, Deers are just regular animals available for SA1/SADX versions. Meaning that what works in one game would likely be the same for the other,
I've been playing this since it came out on Dreamcast then Gamecube and now Steam and even yet i'm still learning. I know how to make Chaos Chao and all that but sometimes when i want to make a particular type of Chao i do find it somewhat confusing. This is very useful indeed so thank you :)
Kinda the reason why they made the decision to make the whole Kindergarten available offline. Unused omochao voice clips suggested that you could also interact with other people's Chao in the Kindergarten, but this interaction would be minimal at best.
Lovely and informative video. I had never gotten into Chao before, challenging myself with this now to get a few Chaos Chao (one normal set, one set of Gold, Silver and Shiny Red for Angel, Chaos and Devil respectively...and then a black Angel Chao (named it Cereza for future Sega ;) ) Pink Chaos and White Devil. Easiest way I found to keep things balanced pre-evolution as well as get the Chao able to walk and swim was just to give a baby Chao, at least in Sonic Adventure 2, two of each animal save for the skeleton dogs. Then they gain animal traits (like fire breathing from dragons, farting from skunks, etc) and are able to move freely. Then if you're like me and I know I am, skeleton dogs to get rid of animal parts (and most likely give the little one its legs back). From there, it should be simple to get which starting type you want. Did have a question though: -Read in the past you had to wait for a Chao to go through its breeding cycle before the second form changes are noticed. Was I mis-informed there?
I'm sure the stat dominance is the same across all alignments, if it's truly different for Hero types then I'll test it out myself! But I do distinctly remember once trying to make a Hero Fly type in SADX but ended up as a Run type, despite having much higher Fly stats in general. Also, consider what you said for Neutral types, what if Fly influence is maxed out as well as Run or Power? Stats given the "most attention" in two areas would have to call back to the Stat Dominance rule.
an interesting note related to the stat influence is that from my experience on the dreamcast chao garden run and fly are on the same variable as opposed to fly and swim or run and power
oh my god thank you so much for that last part! i've been giving so many flying things to my chao and it keeps evolving into run.. now i know how to fix it lmao
None of them, Stat Influence is invisible. It's only gauged by how many items are physically given to Chao. That's why I say Points and Levels don't equal Stat Influence, since giving 99 levels of Run may not guarantee maxed Run Influence if you later gave 30 levels of Power. There's more of the Run stat, but the influence would be max in Power (I'm sure 30 levels would require more than 80 drives!)
Interesting thing I found out is that stamina is what affects it second evolution more than age. I been having chao going through their second evolution as early as two years old.
Holy cow! This was a favorite game from childhood and I had no idea they made the mechanics so complex. Thanks for putting it together because it was informative and entertaining :) I had something strange happen to my chao recently. I was going for a Dark/Run/Run but when after it went through first evolution (cocoon), it became Dark/Run/Fly based on its physical appearance. Have you seen this happen where a chao emerges from first evolution with second evolution features? I’m playing on Xbox 360 btw
Ah, you seemed to get yourself a Monotone Normal. It's a monotone Chao with the normal colour gene, they look pretty cool as any Dark or Neutral type. If you check the video description of this /watch?v=WW5SAHVH3to there's a link to show an image of what Monotone Normals look like when evolved.
You know you've made a good game when people still talk about it still years later. :)

Edit: As it turns out the thing about how tasty and strong fruts affect magnitude is untrue as they affect magnitude the same way that the normal fruts do
I wish I knew all this when I loved this game all I did was throw stuff at the chaos and hope they became a sonic
crab0309 haha I actually did study patterns of raising a chao but back then I started throwing just chao fruits to them it was the fastest way to raise all stats and somehow my cousin knew a trick to copy items and selling it! it was amazing game!
I didn’t even know they could do that I just got regular, good, evil, and gold if I remember correctly
You probably have a Dark/Run/Fly. To get a Dark/Run/Run, balance out the Fly stat (so give some Swim) and then spam Run-increasing items. The spikes should look more red at the end result.
Thanks so much for this. Great editing, presentation, etc.
This helped me a LOT but I had NO IDEA that Chao evolutions were so complex!!! I just started playing this game again 1 month ago
Randoms called me crazy. Schoolmates called me no life. Friends left. Some never came back. I ignored. After 14 years of hear this. I now question myself. Why do I still play dis 2001 game?... Like if u cri everytim (jk)
Chao is love, Chao is life
Lol :D
Haha, you're welcome XD
1 rip = respect 100
Do they still make fun of you today?
The original Sonic Adventure 2 for Dreamcast initially planned for online capabilities, but were scrapped in the final version. These online features were essentially what now makes up the Chao Kindergarten.
I understand there's only so many chao facts to discuss but I really wish there were more of these being made
I know this is just simply sublime and they need to bring it in the future.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS FANTASTIC VIDEO. This helped me truly understand how chao evolution works in the game. No other source gives this good of advice. I can now get any kind of chao I want at any time. thanks again friend.
Thank you for this, truly. Do you have more videos? I learned quite a bit of new material even after being at this for years.
I have a playlist of various tutorial stuff on my channel, check it out whenever you like :)
Sapphirechao Thank you oor your videos! You're so knowledgable on Chao and know how to talk about abd present well, I would pay you to make more videos!
Haha thanks! Just doing what I enjoy is enough payment :)
Sapphirechao Well put!
Sapphirechao has the game ever done a glitch that made the screen mess up when you came out of the hero garden
Thank you SOO much! My chao kept evolving into a swim type and with the help of your video, I instead got it to evolve into a chaos chao as intended. :)
wow this made me for some reason not want to continue playing around with my chaos.. to much.. work..
The good thing is that you could just chill around with them without any knowledge of this
I thought I knew it all but learned a lot from this video, just replaying SA2B again on an emulator. Very informational video!
XD well the 360 was actually my brother's, since then he exchanged it for a PS3.
I don't play either console that much.
More videos will be underway, but given the time constraints of life in general, daily videos would be near impossible X-)
Nonetheless, I hope to at some stage develop a mini series which would be uploaded every few days or something similar.
So, TH-cam wanted me to see this video, since it was on my recommended list.
Needless to say, I feel like I learnt something from this.
Who else is here after Cybershell's return?
Glad you enjoyed it! The Dreamcast I believe may have differences between the Gamecube version which I'm more familiar with, but that may only apply to the breeding mechanics rather than Chao evolution and lifespan.
I'm trying to breed a sonic chao
You meant raise
Lots of green run Drives/Animals, make sure to balance raising the Chao by having both a Hero (Sonic for example) and Dark (Shadow for example) character raise the Chao, and keep it neutral.
This is only important for the first evolution, after that the hero/dark characters have no influence for it's second evolution.
A year later you're still answering questions for people. I applaud you.
Always happy to help :)
Kodey Jones Nope. Third evolution is a Chaos Chao, and those never evolve or reincarnate
I know this vid is really old but this is the most informative Chao video I've seen so far, thank you so much!
ive recently watched a few of your videos and i never knew there was so much to do with chao and such O___O Im baffled that systems that seem simple, are actually quite deep! you can do a TON!
i honestly wasn't expecting to get such quality content for that game thanks a lot
Subbed.
+Radori
Thanks!
No worries, glad to help out other Chao fans! :D
Yay mayo
There needs to be classes in colleges around the world about this
Yeah, it helps when you can get lots of one animal from one side (e.g. skeleton dogs from Pumpkin Hill), drop off the animals as Knuckles, leave, then come back a Rouge to use the animals.
Do you mean Alignment/Run/Power or Alignment/Type/Run + Power?
The latter is impossible since Run and Power cancel each other out,
Thanks for the info, Saph, SA2B's the best Sonic game in the series, imo, and heaven forbid Chao Island (website) finishes their own thing, and I used that for a long time until I saw this video... you are a MUCH better source of information on Chao than they are, you should do alot more of these "technical standpoint" kind of videos!
Id pay big money if they made a game with chaos in it again. Thanks for explanation.
I did not know about hybrid evolutions before! That's not covered on Chao Island (yet)!
Thank you ^w^ I love genetics and chao so putting both together has been a hobby of mine for almost 4 years now xD
This is very impressive. The stat system definitely makes a lot more sense when presented as a diagram.
Your general hour measurements are reasonably accurate. Stamina is also a factor, so second evolution can appear much sooner or later than you think. But of course the older the Chao, the more obvious the changes :)
Excellent guide. In my opinion you are the best Chao guide on youtube.
This video is helpful regarding in making some specific character chaos like Sonic and Shadow Chao. Very well said SapphireChao! :)
I remember maxing out my baby chao's run stat and STILL getting a Nights Chao
Thanks for the Info, I kept ending up with run types so this was really helpful to get other types of adult chao!
Incredible. I knew how to influence my chaos' physical appearance, but this! You're my new teacher.
Did have a question though:
-Read in the past you had to wait for a Chao to go through its breeding cycle before the second form changes are noticed. Was I mis-informed there?
I wish there where chaos drives in adventure 1. I named my chao gremlin because it looks like an absolute mess with the animals
Could the gradual change in a baby chao over time be called the 0st evolution?
12:19 I have this one do I wanted to get a Shadow Chao I guess I'll have to give it 20 swim animals right?
Nevermind I was able to get my Shadow Chao :'D thx for the video couldn't done it without it
The intermission at 3 minutes was amazing
I'm sure the stat dominance is the same across all alignments, if it's truly different for Hero types then I'll test it out myself! But I do distinctly remember once trying to make a Hero Fly type in SADX but ended up as a Run type, despite having much higher Fly stats in general.
Also, consider what you said for Neutral types, what if Fly influence is maxed out as well as Run or Power? Stats given the "most attention" in two areas would have to call back to the Stat Dominance rule.
Finally found this video again
an interesting note related to the stat influence is that from my experience on the dreamcast chao garden run and fly are on the same variable as opposed to fly and swim or run and power
Yes you can, watch the whole video as it gives examples
oh my god thank you so much for that last part! i've been giving so many flying things to my chao and it keeps evolving into run.. now i know how to fix it lmao
9 years old and recommended and still relevant.
I'm watching a ten year old video on a side feature in a 22-year-old game
Thanks for putting it together because it was informative and entertaining :)
I had something strange happen to my chao recently.
