- Its been a minute since my last Sonic Adventure 2 challenge, but we're back! This time we're gonna see if we can find every Lost Chao without using the Mystic Melody upgrade. Can we rescue them all? Lets find out!

So the Lost Chao in Sonic’s last Level I think was a glitch that wasn’t present in the Dreamcast version.
I remember being perplexed by that rail as well as a kid on GameCube, and I swear I recall a video that explained that the railing worked normally on the original Dreamcast version.

It is! I always thought it was rouge or like part of the music. But it stops when you free the turtle, and he makes a similar noise when you ride it down

@@PriffyViole Because they have the same voice actor. Lani Minella was both Rouge and Omochao, in addition to other various small bits along the way. Cheaper to use one VA to do a variety of tiny things than get a bunch of new people for it, after all.
Sorry to "um actually" but emulation isnt illegal. I understand how people make that mistake because distributing ROMs and ISOs is illegal but the act of emulating it isnt. The legal reason these emulators get to exist and are so easy to search for is of the technicality that youre just emulating a product you do already own. If you have EVER owned a copy of a game you TECHNICALLY are 100% within your consumer rights to emulate it. Obviously please dont pirate contemporary games especially smaller indie games

To be more clear owning a game doesn’t necessarily give you the rights to download a second copy. But you’re well within your rights to copy one over to your computer from the cartridge or original disk. The only gray line in the way is the quasi legality of breaking encryptions. But this doesn’t apply to most all games until after the ps2 and GameCube generations. And even then what damages are they going to claim if you dump your own Wii game, they got paid so while they might be able to make a dmca case like why would they? They stand nothing to gain but losing money. And I don’t think there’s ever been a case to set the precedent for dumping encrypted games anyway really. So while the line is acknowledged it’s not really drawn yet. No one’s really tested what breaking encryption really means or how far the lines stretch so really no one knows for certain if dumping your switch games is legal or not I think. They just stand on different sides of the gray line bickering back and forth until someone pulls the trigger.
People don't realize this but there have only been like two court cases and technically speaking dumping your legally owned ROMs to your computer to play them through an emulator is actually illegal. Emulation court proceedings are an interesting read but it is my belief that if Nintendo or Sega or some other corporation found it actually worth the money and time to strike down on emulation they would win. Having purchased a game only legally allows you to play it on official, supported hardware, and many emulator projects are not clean room implementations, which puts them in the legally dubious territory.

Security Hall messed me up so bad as a kid since I never expected the Treasure Scope to be vital outside Hard Mode. I even tried the other method Dusk showed, but I could never figure out how to do the screw attack jump (But now that I know, its easy)
Another route for Pumpkin Hill: the rocket that goes from Church Mountain to Pumpkin Mountain also leaves you high enough to glide to the chao
That exact trick is what inspired me to try Melody-less for every stage in my recent run of the game.
I always found that rocket easier to use than the spring shown in the video, too. And then, given that there's an extra life under the upgrade location in that level, and where the lost chao normally is when not doing mission 3, you can easily use Pumpkin Hill to farm lives (about 1 per minute using the Church Mountain rocket).
10:13 If you get enough speed while jumping up into the rail, the momentum scoots you upwards. It's still a really dumb rail though.
I put myself right up against the wall and do a bounce and it works for me. Don't bounce into the wall, hug the wall and do a bounce.

I've definitely thought of this idea. But figured it would be impossible due to a few of the mech stages. Bravo to you on your commitment to rescue these poor little adorable creatures without needing to resort to a power up! You know what's more important.
Thank you! Even if it wasn't possible I would still make it a video probably. Even if the answer is "no" alot of these challenges are still interesting to see play out. In fact a few of my challenge videos ended up being fails, but still full of interesting stuff. As long as the journey is interesting it makes a good video.

What I like is that many of these don't even require glitches to do. Just cleverly use of abilities and game mechanics.
Yeah its cool. I dont mind glitches, but its cool to find ways that dont require them.
@@EpicDuskk Yea. I saw that because I find it nice that in many situations you can get through them just be simply cleverly using the game mechanics as I like it when games give you this option.
You don't even need to glitch in Wild Canyon. There's a digable spot in a painting near the center area where you'll be taken to a room full of those same paintings. Find the right one and you can just find the Chao that way.
Edit: Never mind, someone already pointed it out.
In Wild Canyon, there's another way to get the Lost Chao without using the Mystic Melody. On the second floor, there are 2 platforms, one of them has a wall which, by digging into it, leds you to a room with other walls. The middle one on the right leds you the room with the lost chao.

In Wild Canyon you don't need the Mystic melody or glitching to get to the lost chao.
If you go up the wind pillar in the middle to the above ground level, underneath one of the overhaning balconies there is a digging spot and when you dig you will appear in a room with six more digging spots, jump onto the middle on the right hand side and that takes you to the chao.
I always use that one for the A rank as i found it way faster than the Mystic melody route.
I never clicked that the turtle is what was making that weird noise in Dry Lagoon, I always wondered what tf that was lol
Wonderful, underrated video. The kind of obsessive content that just makes you want to be passionate about a subject too. I gotta replay SA2; the sheer level of weird detail in it makes it easy to understand why so many have called this the peak of the series.

That city escape one is funny for me since as a kid I'd always try to bounce from the small bit of ground on the top of the nearby tree and used that to grab the pully. Had no idea you could just...spindash and jump lmao.
For pumpkin hill, the rocket that sends you straight up next to pumpkin mountain also goes high enough for you to quickly glide over.
I'm crying about Meteor Herd not working on modern releases, but also have no idea why this was in my recommended, clicked it, and was like 'Wow this guy does a good job of explaining how to do these things.'
@@pumanarration According to a few comments you can get it to work on modern releases if you get the game to play at a lower framrate or something like that.

In Pumpkin Hill, there's an even easier trick! Just use the rocket to Pumpkin Mountain and immediately jump and glide to the floating island. I used this method a lot for grinding lives as a kid (you can easily get 2 lives in the first 30 seconds if you dig at the Shovel Claw spot and immediately go to the island on missions that aren't the Chao one)
The lost Chao in the 4th levels of each story are the only ones that feels intensional to get without Mystic Melody.

I vaguely remember doing roll-flips as you're approaching the rail so the upward momentum takes you up the rail, on gamecube. Like, the tap-B-then-press-A flips.

... I legit NEVER fucking knew that those statues had a use... Legit never found out what they were for wtf. You have shown me there is a huge aspect of the game I never even knew about. Also... Fuck that gravity puzzle near the end of the game. When I played the game on the gamecube that was one of the few times as a little kid I genuinely rage quit so many times.
I always cheat that gravity puzzle lol, I cant stand it.
Now I can grab most of these Chao without using the melody.

to be honest im not sure if you can spin dash on those, I dont think I ever tried. But I can confidently say that would not be easier, those things are janky as hell. Ill give that a try though next time I'm playing final chase.
I found the knuckles Dreamcast one by accident when I was a kid I glitched through that gap too. I hope someone recreates it somehow on modern versions. Also that last rail on sonic final hero level didn’t work on modern versions but on Dreamcast you walk then jump and it just slides up automatically
This is genuinely a lot more than I expected.
I was expecting just Metal Harbor, Radical Highway, Green Forest, Wild Canyon, Crazy Gadget, Mission Street, and Cannon's Core.
From what I remember (pre-watch), 2 Chao (Iron Gate, Egg Quarters) outright force you to get it, and 2 are only doable on original Dreamcast version (Meteor Herd, Mad Space).
5:38 There is a MUCH easier way to do this, if you rotate the camera, move to the right wall at the start, and just run towards and glide into the sign at the right angle, you can clip through the wall and the Lost Chao corridor is located practically straight ahead.

I didn't know about the sign clips before posting this. My process for making this video was trying to figure out my own path for each level before checking to see if speedrunners found a way. I knew about that aquatic mine clip for years, just never had a practical reason to show it off. I've since tried the sign clip speedrunners do, I find it really difficult, but thats probably skill issues on my part.
To grind up the upwards rails, I always just air dash on them. The speed of the dash propels me up the rail.
For 10:15, I've always found that it's easy(ish) to get up that rail if you have a really good running start, then homing attack into it. While not always easy, that guaranteed the most success when I was trying for A rank. Sometimes the best way to get a lot of speed before getting there is a spin dash, but always homing attack into it. However, you need enough space to do it. If you homing attack too close to the rail, you loose your momentum, too far and... yeah, same thing
You can get the lost chao in cannon's core without doing the glitch, I was able to spindash jump off the ramp at the end after a few tries.
10:29 I just did this in the 2P battle mode of Final Rush, and when I got to the spot with the 1up/Chao, there actually was a 1up there! I was surprised, but I got the 1up, and finished the race. Neat to know there's a 1up even in the 2P mode!
I never knew there was a Treasure Scope spring in Security Hall for the Lost Chao, I just Screw Kicked up and glided to the platform, the more you learn~
That final rush ramp is straight up evil, i dread trying to A rank that mission because of the rail alone

While I don't think it's technically required to beat the game, one of the most natural routes through Final Rush takes you through the section where you pick it up and are expected to use it to proceed through the level. There are also some uses of this mechanic that aren't related to finding a lost Chao; e.g. the Mystic Melody is required in order to reach some of the other character upgrades.
I know there are a handfull of other uses. I even mentioned a few of the hard mode treasure hunting levels needing them. But the lost chao is the primary use. I didnt want to list every single exception, that would be a little too yappy.
I'm honestly surprised that Iron Gate and Egg Quarters are possible! These were the two Impossible Chaos in Irregularzero's video.
Iron gate actually blew my mind. I gave each level about an hour before researching to see if anyone else did it and I was CONFIDENT it would be impossible. Like I actually said out loud "you got to be fucking kidding me" when I saw it for the first time lmao.
It looks like it'd be pretty hard to get that last chao when every character needs to use the melody

On Pumpkin Hill, the place with the house on it, there is a rocket, take that rocket and glide from there, it's easier and faster I believe, then the spring
I actually got Pumpkin Hill without Mystic Melody as a kid because I used a rocket to get to that area. I felt like such a legend when I did it. Did not know there were others.
I knew it wouldn't be technically possible on the steam release since I was recently trying to do this thanks to the archipelago randomizer, but i'm surprised by just how many actually can be managed.
Maybe some day someone will crack the code on the space hunting stages.
Time to nit pick because that's what I do best lol:
1:25 - The super bounce, as the name implies, allows you to **bounce** very high in the air.
2:03 - This clip can be done without pause buffering and is done in IL speedruns of this level.
4:05 - There's a rocket on Church mountain aimed at that mountain (it's been almost 2 and a half years since I last played SA2, so I don't remember that mountain's name), and with a glide you can reach the platformer effortlessly.
4:35 - You should clarify this trick can be done without pausing. Pause buffering is used to hover on the first possible frame.
5:28 - Rather unique approach to getting the chao. I was more so expecting you would use that sign to the right of the starting area and clip out of bounds. If you're a gamer, you can also use it to run on the wall and clip out of bounds.
8:28 - It would count, but I know you have the battle dlc, so you're playing Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and not Sonic Adventure 2. This would mean it would also not count if you played the Gamecube version.
9:28 - Another method (the gamer method) would be to use the speedrun trick Crazy Gadget Skip Skip (or CGSS).
10:22 - Don't know about you, but it seems like there are some arrows pointing up. Because the rail's on the wall, I would assume that should mean you're supposed to jump on the rail with a running start?
12:05 - Non gamer move on your end, especially when considering how dedicated you were to doing the Eternal Engine strat in your Sonic only SA2 video lol.
12:35 - Ok, you recorded the levels out of order. But what stopped you in the editing process from putting Dry Lagoon after Iron Gate lol?
13:03 - How dare you not listen to the Turtle's singing!

3. The spring is just as effortless as the rocket. I never intended to show off every conceivable way to get the chao. I showed off a few methoods in later levels if they were interesting enough.
4. I've previously said in the video that pause buffering helps with timing. I never said its required. I also dont think every single thing needs to be explained like the people watching have never seen this game. Sometimes its best to keep explanations simple and digestible.
5. I didn't know about the wall-run or the methood to consistently use the sign to get out of bounds. Again the point of these videos isn't to show off every possible methood, its showing off the methoods I figured out. I knew about the other out of bounds clip, and it worked fine.
6. Literally who cares, its close enough
6A. (Im calling this 6A because I skipped it by accident and dont want to renumber the rest of these.) I'm not a speedrunner again, and even though I can do CGSS, that is way overkill for this challenge. Thats like the equivalent of someone using big fancy words in casual conversation to seem smart, but they're just needlessly being complicated. Also I dont even think that would work. You would hit the death barrier before the chao. So now its the equivalent of someone using fancy words incorrectly.

8. The eternal engine skip was done on a live stream, and I had all the time I wanted to get it done. This video was done off stream, and I had missed several streams due to IRL stuff, and I promised I'd get a SA2 video out that week since I haven't done one in so long, and I know people want this content. So it was either delay the video till I could spend a day attempting it, or use other clips and finish the video on time. I plan to attempt it again in a future stream when I have more time to dedicate to trying it because I do think the glitch is cool as hell and I wanna be able to pull it off.
9. Because it was just funnier that way. Im not striving for perfection, its ok to leave an error in, im not some big time youtuber with a team of editors, im a one man team. And personally I think leaving errors like this in makes it more relatable, like it makes it feel like old school TH-cam content, not super over-produced.

13. I was so obviously joking about emulators being illegal. I literally use them all the time on my channel, and I did the most sarcastic voice I could come up with, and immediately followed it up with a jokey rant about how the used game market is too expensive.
14. Charging a spin dash without falling off the slope is hard for most people. When I say something is "hard" im not saying its hard for someone whos played the game for 2000 hours, im talking from the perspective of someone who is average at the game.
15. I was implying its ending the run, then revealing it was possible.
16. As I said in the video, I did not want to play the level twice. I collected the rings so they wouldn't be there when I showed off the spin dash jump. I cut to the room because I do not need to over-explain every small detail like my audience is 5 years old. I think anyone watching knows killing enemies is what opens doors in this game.
17. "we can use this ramp as a ramp" was a joke. Its a reference to sonic boom, im amazed you dont know that because only someone who is omega obsessed with Sonic would leave a big ass comment like this

My response nitpicking your nitpicks of my nitpicks:
1. I care!
2. You say "We do this by pause buffering" which implies this' the only method for performing the clip. It would different if you said "We do this by clipping through the statue, but an easier way is by pause buffering" or something like that. I don't write scripts.
3. By your gameplay footage, you just barely reach the bottom portion of the platform vs using the rocket where you're much higher up. I see the latter as being effortless.
4. No you didn't. You explicitly said it helps with movement, not timing. I see that as 2 separate things even if you argue otherwise.
5. No comment. Suppose this' fair game except for when you say "showing off the methoods I figured out" as that's true to an extent.

7. (I'm not naming this 6A because it's confusing due to point 6 and point "6A" not being related. Also, I fact check my work) The comment of you saying it "isn't possible" is surprising to me considering you've showcased AxlThunder and Katie, both of who are speedrunners. 18. Do you know how long it's been since I've last seen anything Sonic Boom of all things? The last time I've ever watched the show was when it aired on Boomerang *several* years ago (I was in 4th/5th grade when that show came out), and I haven't seen any memes in a long while either. The most recent thing I've seen from Sonic Boom was a compliation of Sonic being ADHD that I watched several months ago. Also, what the hell do you "big ass comment" like you didn't just write an essay back to me lmao. And then comparing my previous comment to yours, 2 of your points, 6A and 8, literally qualify for "big ass comments" vs mine which are no longer than 3 lines. 19. Only real Sonic fans would remember the "racing mini game" is called "Kart Racing." They even say it when you select the mode so you can't forget.
Wild Canyon doesnt need any glitches actually. In the central upper part, theres a wall you can dig through that goes to a room of 6 other walls, which you can then use one of those walls to reach the chao

10:20 You just need more grounded speed and a jump. Try a spin dash followed by a jump with no homing attack. It will transfer your upwards and forwards momentum to the rail.
10:17(ish) - Bounce-Attack Horizontal rails; Homing-Attack Vertical ones...kinda like how you do at 10:48
I'd call this challenge plausible, since it depends on game version
4:10 it is actually possible to get up there with the spinny hi punch. Barely. After many tries. What happens when you do a mission and don't have mystic melody. Not the only case since Rouge in security has one case she does it.

just curious, you are using save states in this, but how? brief searches doesn't yield much info on any kind of save state mods for the PC port, and this is clearly the HD port, so, idk how you did that :o

Sora made a debug mod that has save states among other features. Its also how I use the free cam to get thumbnails and other footage without the HUD.
10:37 Oh. Somehow I didn't know that the rail hop Vs real jump was dictated by whether you are crouching or not. It makes a lot of sense now that you say it. Is that mentioned via Omochao or the manual? I'm surprised I missed it considering I've 100%ed the game.
11:33 lol, years ago I watched a video just like this and remembered that this was one of the missions that wasn't possible. Glad to see Eggman invented a way to solve this puzzle (He invented wall hacks).

I dont think the game ever tells you, its just something I picked up after playing so much. I've 100% the game a few times and still find something new each time I do. Alot of people who 100% the game still dont know about the magic hands power up believe it or not.
The savageness comes from multiple videos of people crying about that kind of stuff lol. It doesn't even work, I still had people crying about the dreamcast only inclusions and me not wanting to re-record the last level, but then if I didnt talk about them those same people would go "uhm actually its possible on dreamcast!" theres no winning with em lol. Some sonic fans just wanna argue.
The DreamCast only skips count for both versions working together, at the very least. If all the steam version's techniques work on DreamCast, too, then we know it can be done with a single version of the game. It's all about perspective.

I've done the Screw Kick trick in Security Hall before. Thought that was how you were expected to do it.
Im willing to bet that was also intended. Otherwise why put those boxes there. They probably had 2 methoods of getting there, maybe in case you broke the boxes.
For the purely vertical rails like Sonic encounters in his final level, I found that I could usually grind on them after a few attempts if you homing attack into them, you basically need to get onto them with enough speed to overcome gravity... Then hope that speed is converted into upwards momentum instead of downwards momentum. I've used both the bounce bracelet and the rail to get up those areas and once you get good at using the rails I've tended to find them a lot faster and smoother way to get up those platforms but it was always inconsistent and I believe the best I got at it would still often have me fail my first attempt before I got it the second time.
Im pretty sure theres only that one vertical rail like that on the wall right before the lost chao. Unless you mean the like L shaped ones, those ones work fine.

For the Pumpkin Hill one, I also think that the starting rocket that takes you to Pumpkin Mountain gets you high enough to glide to the island without needing the melody. It was a while ago since I've played, though... I may be misremembering the spring.
Also, I owned the original Dreamcast version, so it may have been on there too...
It doesnt, that was my first attempt. Maybe if you had frame perfect glide cancelling, but I doubt it. Dreamcast version maybe, unfortunately I no longer have my dreamcast so I cant test it

They're not difficult to get, but most people dont have where they are memorized, and its annoying to google them lol. I should throw together a quick guide honestly, I didn't realize so many people didnt even know they were a thing, but alot of comments suggest that.

You called out a few chao as only collectable on Dreamcast, but did you verify that any of the others can be collected on that version? And how does the Gamecube version fit into this?
Well I mainly play the modern version. I wasnt planning on showcasing every version of the game, it just came up when researching that some could be done only on DC.
I imagine the GC version these should all be possible since im pretty sure the steam is just a port of the xbox/playstation, which is a port of the Gamecube.
I know the Out of Bounds and any glitches like superbounce and pause buffering works on gamecube. I dont think the dreamcast glitches i mentioned work on gamecube
When I was a kid I used to get city escape lost chao by jumping during the wall run to free fall into one of the springs or pullies since I didn't know about the super bounce thing. In fact to get 99 lives I would replay that stage over and over till I had 999 rings and end the mission that way
