Yeah. As much as I’m proud of my heritage (Chinese) and I think it’s amazing and important, I don’t think pushing our heritage on screen is what will make other Americans see us as Americans too. It’s about being human, a regular guy, not “look, I’m the Asian one, look at me, look at my culture/heritage, I’m different from you (but still American)”. You are, you’re American, but highlighting the differences doesn’t make the difference. I know, seeking validation from others is bad. But life and opportunities isn’t just about what you think of yourself. It’s also about what others think of you. Non-Asian characters being portrayed by Asian actors/actresses really help us. We become more relatable. Those characters show other Americans how we are alike, not how we are different. You don’t introduce yourself to someone by naming your differences, you introduce yourself by seeing similarities, then discover any differences. Don’t push your uniqueness onto someone, that’s not how you get to know them. Obviously, this isn’t the way to do it in every case, but different strokes for different folks, different solutions to different situations. End of the day, an Asian actor playing an Asian-focused character isn’t relatable for non-Asian, Americans. It’s makes us “others”. 😅sorry for the essay

I think that although the way asians try to get in into the industry and represent may not be the "best" and sometimes may even backfire nowadays, it is still a start and we have some presence. It's still difficult to get into the entertainment industry as an Asian American here in the west, and I feel that any sort of presence is good now, so long as people see that Asian Americans are capable to stand there. Simu Liu has destroyed his chances with the Chinese market, but his presence as a main actor will hopefully make it easier for more Asian Americans to be accepted in the industry. It seems like one of your biggest critique about the film Shang Chi is that they did not take the opportunity to showcase your typical Asian American problems in everyday life, or that they did not take the opportunity to touch on some real-world issues like Stop Asian Hate. I don't see why they would need to touch on these subjects though. It's not like Black Panther (as I recall anyway) touched upon Black Lives Matter or police brutality or anything like that. Also you criticized that Shang Chi brought the fight back to the imaginary foreign land of Ta Lo, but so did Black Panther with Wakanda. At the end of the day, the film is just meant to be a superhero film and that's exactly what it was. Just my take on it. Although I do agree with many of your other points and plot holes about the film that made me rank Shang Chi lower than other Marvel Films (like the fact Awkafina's character did a one-arrow-kill to the neck of the dragon completely untrained, among other really weird things). I will be so sad when you stop doing 2x weekly podcasts david! :( But I heard you will be dropping that new podcast with Tim next year, excited for that!
It’s super interesting to hear this take on Shang-Chi especially for those who are Asian Americans bc as someone who’s mixed (black/white) I kinda got that from black panther where though a lot of people loved it, it really put a barrier between African Americans and people from “Wakanda” but the difference is we got a “villain” who talked about that, and Shang-Chi didn’t leaving those Asian Americans even more on the back burner (this just turned into a very random rant lol 💀)
It's true. I like Black Panther. It was awesome. But they didn't give Shang-Chi the same treatment. I mean how are we Asian American supposed to relate to him when there's nothing about him to relate to? He's an Chinese guy from China that does kung-fu........ I'm an Asian guy growing up in America struggling to find my own identity..... I can't relate jack shit to Shang-Chi.... neither do my kids.
@@douayang8976 same here, as much as I enjoyed shang chi…this movie does not represent me whatsoever and I am genuinely terrified if Simu Liu really does become the face of asian males
@@thedoesthingspodcast9298 Ridiculous thing to say. Why should one out of hundreds of Asian actors become the face of Asian males? Because he defended Asians on social media and is in a big movie? You guys are gullible, Simu is just another dude. Leave him alone seriously. The guy doesn't deserve this type of bashing and hate from lesser individuals who haven't achieved nearly as much in life.
@@shah5524 it’s not called bashing it’s called criticism. Grow up. Secondly, my point exactly? Out of the many asian actors there are, why should he be the only one to be the face to represent us?
It's interesting about art criticism. I'd love sit here and say I can take it, I'll take anyone one's opinion and accept it but nah I've had moments of backlash. I think we all do, when someone tells you they dislike something you love , sometimes it's tough not to bite. It's the ones that go too far and ruin it.
i think simu's role is to empower others so that there can be more ppl who look like him will be viewed aa dominant and physical vs the expectation that asians should be delicate and thoughtful always. he is certainly a role breaker in that respect, and i certainly rather he focus on his acting skills and outrageous physical talents that he has rather than changing up his personality to fit the boxes defined by american political correctness and racial underpinnings and inspire asian americans to not be always defined by their surroundings.
much doesn’t change how it’s made exactly compared humans passing several years ago into the present and then the new generations will continue traveling extinct as the next species of the species will continue to evolve as they continue on the same journey as us and we will never forget the time of this transition economic load pattern that was created by an aging and declining species that has evolved from an old population and a generation that was already a population increasing by about half the population and now we will have the most significant change in population and population as we move closer to the next generations into traditional ecological systems that we have been introduced in many other parts and have not seen the change that has happened to our planet existing
@who cares What language did I use that shows hate? I'm more disappointed and confused to be honest. I hear alot of verbal abuse against the guy in the name of constructive criticism? Simu hasn't done anything worth this level of disdain.
@who cares None of those adjectives indicate hate though. It's not constructive because I'm not trying to be. I'm being critical, but not hateful unlike some people here. You, like everyone else here criticizing Simu, have still not given any examples of behavior deserving of this level of criticism and anger towards him.
Great conversation really enjoyed it and agreed with a lot of it but have to say karaoke isn’t just common amongst Korean and Philippine culture it’s super common throughout Taiwan and extremely common in a certain provinces in China.
HEY that's me the sun dance comment guy LOL! 29:00. I think i get what you mean but it might just mean you guys don't like the CURRENT direction of marvel films. Which is fine, because the way they're doing things now is develop characters in the long term over a long series of movies and other forms of content. Think t'chala from black panther, he never changed. But he does over the course of 3 different films. There are some other things, but i definitely don't think it's about mediocrity. I think this is why tarantino also hates super hero movies and that's what we should at the very least try to diffrentiate. These super hero movies are not meant to be what you're used to traditionally.
I liked this podcast! It was very constructive and I think the other podcasts about Simu or Shang-Chi were harder to swallow because they felt like you were totally crappin on the guy.
Answering the question @34:33 Yes i do think those who call people out (me included) do it for the ego boost. we may not know it at the time of doing it but definitely for someone to call another person out, they have to feel like they are definitely in the right or is being the "good person". its problematic if their ego boost is gained from people agreeing with the statement than the act itself. that sense of validation is what breeds trolls. edit: just finish watching the whole video. the act itself is problematic. end point: best to keep ur opinions to urself hahah
I kind of felt the same away about Crazy Rich Asians. I didn't like the movie, but only because it's just not my type of genre. However there was this insane push from a lot of Asians saying to go watch it, only for the simple fact that it's an Asian casted movie from Hollywood. I get that representation matters, but it felt like I was being told to like it, just because it had a full cast of Asians.
Loved the podcast David! Just thought a great example of what you guys were talking about towards the end of leading by example and just letting your great work do the talking that I hoped you would mention was Chadwick Boseman. Literally from the marvel family and represented his own community in a time of turmoil for them as well. He was a hero for the black community and others in so many ways from the way he handled his own illness to the amazing roles he was allowed to play through hard work and perseverance. The man passed away at such a young age of 43 and yet few can compare to him in terms of being a leader and someone who represented his culture and community. And he did a lot of that just through his work, and not someone who had to constantly speak out and try to be “woke”. Just my 2 cents, keep up the good work!
I LOVE every frame a painting!!i think he was from vancouver. but ya.. i agree.. i thnk when it came to asian american humour, most fell with our parents being so asian in habbits, clashing with our western mentatliy.. thats why those asian skits back in the day were so funny - everything wrapped in plastic lol... the mounds of plastic bags, etc.. its just liek those inside things were so funny... but where it started to fall was when people couldn't laugh anymore.. and it started wo be more about 'racism' and stuff.. just like black comedy, the ones that are doing really well are always the inside jokes of silly things that happen in the culture .. but the ones that aren't as funny are the ones that start to get preachy, and dividing.. - which now is why i see a trend of a lot of black comedy that is game geek related. it shows there is a cultural shift and 'racsiim, etc' people are getting very tired of that topic.. where as the grifters want to push that narrative.. the feel good comedy about celebrating our flaws and stuff is slowly going away, because everyone is in their feelings.. and thats' why i think comedy is dying.. unles syou decide to push back. heck, there are even southerners making fun of themselves and how people see them.. i think the turning point will come soon, when we can win back comedy.. but the fight is really hard theses days..
The main issue was that the movie never really established as Shang-Chi really "living" in the US, I mean beyond the weak shots of his crummy apartment you don't really see anything...I never really got the feeling of him being overly connected minus the bar scenes and maybe his job, with Kathy it was really easy to see her connection with her home and family as well. The counterpoint is also that "being American" doesn't look like anything, what's so distinctly American to anyone? what? wearing jeans and sneakers doesn't make someone North American IMO and honestly, this is coming from someone who was born in Europe and raised in Canada...unless you go the extreme trophe route it doesn't really stick.
I don't get why these fools criticizing Simu so much when the guy hasn't said anything about them. So what if Simu wants to reply to people in defense of Asians? That's his own prerogative. Who are they to say he's only responding to play the savior or to "look amazing"? That's their OPINION, NOT fact. I just find it cowardly to speak about the man's character on a podcast, I'd have more respect if they said it to Simu's face or at least call him on the podcast, not behind his back.
That comment about how "we never had.....before" that happens every time someone of color or a woman gets a big movie. When Wonder Woman came out they had women saying that in every interview, there was a freaking tv show called Wonder Woman! lol The bionic woman, Buffy the Vampire slayer etc plus there have been a lot of strong female characters who weren't always the lead but still contributed greatly to the overall story of whatever show they were on same with Black, Asian and some Latino actors being heroes.
Because there have been more movies with Asians, I do agree that this movie had an opportunity to address the Asian narrative that were being painted but missed the window. On the other hand, Shang Chi was great and I really like there have been more Asian superheroes now, but they are mostly male and it would be nice to see more Asian women (of all descents, might I add) as superheroes to rep the Asian community to change the narrative of how Asian women are perceived.
Most people get mad that other people are working smarter and not harder and making more money doing it. Most people assume youtubers are lazy and they make a lot of money.
Lmao I watched shang chi after I saw your review of it, and I loved the movie! Did i think your opinion of the movie would change mine ? No. That's why we're allowed different opinions people!! No need to get so heated 🤣🤣
I think what they should’ve done was made the father make “America” or just the place he calls home calls home “since ran away to live there” hate him to show that he should come home and it should show him overcoming that and basically show that he wants to save the world (that’s what super heroes do anyways) otherwise it just feels like he’s a little selfish and only wants to help those who are actually close to him (which defeats the superhero purpose)
I whole heartedly agree that Shang Chi isn't enough; however, it is a good start. My son is 1 and you better believe he'll grow up with Shang Chi. I'm excited to see where Marvel goes with the character, but seeing him in the mainstream is powerful. Have you seen Warrior? Wish that show would get more publicity because, as someone who's family immigrated from China to SF, I'm sure it isn't far off from what they experienced in terms of discrimination.
I've reached that point as well somebody tried to come at me the other day for a comment that I made. And before I would have said something but now I'm like I said what I said. Like I'm allowed to disagree without over explaining myself.
@@Mickeii617 i notcied the peopel that got offended the most for shang.. were asian guys LOL.. and white women lol. it was like a personal attack to them lol
The character may get a trilogy but I don't think Simu Liu will, they aren't going to keep making big budget movies that they can't release in China even if what he said was true.
I don't get it so simi should censor what he says to avoid media criticism or backlash? Is it better to recieve backlash and voice truth or stay safe and be fake? Simi's not stupid he knows the risks in his actions.
How come you keep saying you're not hating on them but you keep talking about all the people you know who disliked the movie? What about 92% of the people who did enjoy it? You seem to have completely ignored all of them. Read some of the cristism and acknowledge your flaws.
I thought the film was enjoyable but I did have a small issue that this was still an Asian guy doing kung-fu type of trope. A part of me wishes that the Asian guy could have had any other type of power as someone who grew up hearing "You're Asian so you must know kung-fu, right?"
@who cares I don't know which Simu you watch but the guy seems more humble than most, including these TH-camrs you seem to be supporting the opinions of.
although the points you bring up about Simu and social media are valid, there's already multiple celebrities in the Marvel and Disney franchise who promoted their opinions that may cater to "Woke" topics. Brie Larson promoted female empowerment not just through twitter but openly during events and award ceremonies; funny enough many who criticized her were a bunch of neckbeards who secretly hold misogynistic and racist thinking like Criticial Drinker and the Quartering. Plus I believe Simu's 'Not an Experiment' post toward Bob Chapek was more strategic than just impulsive; given the fact that Bob Chapek is under fire for his decisions behind theater/stream theatrical releases which directly lead to Scarlett johanssen's multimillion dollar lawsuit against Disney corporation. And if the rumors are true about his decision to place Ads into Disney Plus will be another blow to his reputation. To me, simu's ' not an experiment' is completely fine given the climate of "woke" thinking in our society
Bob Chapek is also in hot water with the Russo Brothers and they are potentially leaving Marvel and Disney. Bob has just been having miss after miss since he recently took over Disney.
So is criticism, I think all this hate towards Simu is completely fabricated and unfounded. No one can actually give a legit reason for the verbal abuse & disrespect he is being shown by people he doesn't even acknowledge.
*Isaiah 13:14* "And it shall be as the chased roe, and as a sheep that no man taketh up: they shall every man turn to his own people, and flee every one into his own land."

I will be so sad when you stop doing 2x weekly podcasts david! :( But I heard you will be dropping that new podcast with Tim next year, excited for that!
Awesome conversation!
accented cinema is great. i like his breakdown of the films
Can't wait for the topics
Lol all those skits with Kim has come full circle for you and it’s hilarious yet heartwarming.
Had to do a double take when I looked at an old picture of Danny Cho, god damn 😂
Same rectangular glasses too lol
David be so petty he be commenting on people's comments....12 hours after he posted the podcast 😂
Hell yeah... I'm glad yall say what you mean and mean what you say.. 😌 stand by it and who cares what people say. I'm here for it.
@@shah5524 I'm upset at Marvel FYI.... not Simu. You bought into the hype.
You a simp.
Dude i felt the same and mostly knew why, yall just helped me reaffirm it
Shang Nom: Legend of the Shipsekki 🤣🤣🤣🤣 . This HAS to be made 💯
i think simu's role is to empower others so that there can be more ppl who look like him will be viewed aa dominant and physical vs the expectation that asians should be delicate and thoughtful always. he is certainly a role breaker in that respect, and i certainly rather he focus on his acting skills and outrageous physical talents that he has rather than changing up his personality to fit the boxes defined by american political correctness and racial underpinnings and inspire asian americans to not be always defined by their surroundings.
much doesn’t change how it’s made exactly compared humans passing several years ago into the present and then the new generations will continue traveling extinct as the next species of the species will continue to evolve as they continue on the same journey as us and we will never forget the time of this transition economic load pattern that was created by an aging and declining species that has evolved from an old population and a generation that was already a population increasing by about half the population and now we will have the most significant change in population and population as we move closer to the next generations into traditional ecological systems that we have been introduced in many other parts and have not seen the change that has happened to our planet existing
So much hateful vitriol levelled against a wholesome and professional Simu, pathetic how low these TH-camrs have to go to vent their jealously.
simu does virtue signal way too much
@who cares What language did I use that shows hate? I'm more disappointed and confused to be honest. I hear alot of verbal abuse against the guy in the name of constructive criticism? Simu hasn't done anything worth this level of disdain.
@@tommys6596 In your opinion. No one actually has any proof that Simu has done anything wrong. Just a movement of hate for no reason whatsoever.
@who cares None of those adjectives indicate hate though. It's not constructive because I'm not trying to be. I'm being critical, but not hateful unlike some people here. You, like everyone else here criticizing Simu, have still not given any examples of behavior deserving of this level of criticism and anger towards him.
@@tommys6596 In your opinion. Give examples to reinforce your statements so that they have any impact.
sunday is brain day 🧠
Great conversation really enjoyed it and agreed with a lot of it but have to say karaoke isn’t just common amongst Korean and Philippine culture it’s super common throughout Taiwan and extremely common in a certain provinces in China.
Can y’all review Squid Game pleaseeee! Would love to hear both of your critiques. Likes and dislikes
I jus wanna say Simu is Asian Canadian, he from here Toronto, Canada
All that aside i love the podcast keep it up 👊🏾
HEY that's me the sun dance comment guy LOL!
Another great podcast David
Answering the question @34:33
Yes i do think those who call people out (me included) do it for the ego boost. we may not know it at the time of doing it but definitely for someone to call another person out, they have to feel like they are definitely in the right or is being the "good person". its problematic if their ego boost is gained from people agreeing with the statement than the act itself. that sense of validation is what breeds trolls.
edit: just finish watching the whole video. the act itself is problematic. end point: best to keep ur opinions to urself hahah
Don't you find it sad that you need a marvel film to represent your heritage when we already got the internet for that?
simu has to learn why bts is so popular.. its bescause they don't say nothing. just smile.
Simu doesn't have to learn SH!@#T! He's living a great life while you little girls bish about him lol
Simu needs a new publicist
Aw shit part 2 of shang chi review. "The aftermath"😂
When’s Bobby lee gona be on the podcast ?
I'm curious to learn what your favorite marvel film is out of all of the current released ones?
Simu Liu has got to learn or he will lose a lot of crap in the near future
Simu doesn't need to do anything you think he should. He's the most successful one here. This comes across as jealousy so badly
@@shah5524 But he's doing something which is talking. Like David So said he needs to shut up.
@@shah5524 I'm not jealous at him but what Simu has done was stupid and wrong. Simu doesn't speak to all Asians.
@@myalen1009 Did Simu say he speaks for all Asians or are you saying that because David said that?
@@JamitMan Okay so then by that logic you and your whole family should shut up as well? Damn David got some unintelligent followers lol
26:15 .....The love coming from both of y'all Hits My 💔😭😭😭Honestly and Now Can Feel it Mending slowly.....thanks u2
Thats kinda how it is being an asian American in the US tho lol
I don't get why these fools criticizing Simu so much when the guy hasn't said anything about them. So what if Simu wants to reply to people in defense of Asians? That's his own prerogative. Who are they to say he's only responding to play the savior or to "look amazing"? That's their OPINION, NOT fact. I just find it cowardly to speak about the man's character on a podcast, I'd have more respect if they said it to Simu's face or at least call him on the podcast, not behind his back.
He talking shit behind his back and yet he still follows the guy. Ridiculous.
These fools are jealous. Simu is a successful Asian man in Hollywood and David isn’t.
I never could explain why simu’s “wokeness” bothered me so much but now I know why
I liked Shang Chi but I wish they didn’t kill DeathDealer and The Mandarin
I thought your opinions were valid their was a lot of holes in the dialogue/plot in the movie. Looking forward to your review on Squid game!
even tony lueng said .. the script wasn't deep.. so it was up to him to fill in the gaps to make a deeper character. so they're not wrong
@@npcimknot958 agreed.
Lmao I watched shang chi after I saw your review of it, and I loved the movie! Did i think your opinion of the movie would change mine ? No. That's why we're allowed different opinions people!! No need to get so heated 🤣🤣
Yeah!!!!
Your review was on point, there’s a lot to improve on the script but still a good enough movie to recommend
It's awesome that you got to meet Benedict Wong!
I love the question that popped up but would just ask if it could be a bit more legible?
Bruce Lee's Kato from green hornet, David Caradine's Kung Fu 😂
Cancel David so he's against Marvel woke warriors assemble
I've reached that point as well somebody tried to come at me the other day for a comment that I made. And before I would have said something but now I'm like I said what I said. Like I'm allowed to disagree without over explaining myself.
@@Mickeii617 I’m learning this too!!!
@@Mickeii617 i notcied the peopel that got offended the most for shang.. were asian guys LOL.. and white women lol. it was like a personal attack to them lol

The only person who could've replaced awkwafina would be you david, I could imagine it 😅
Waiting for "shang knong" looolll
The character may get a trilogy but I don't think Simu Liu will, they aren't going to keep making big budget movies that they can't release in China even if what he said was true.
I love you, David!! I love you, Ed!!
When we getting Kim Jung Un on the podcast tho?
I don't get it so simi should censor what he says to avoid media criticism or backlash? Is it better to recieve backlash and voice truth or stay safe and be fake? Simi's not stupid he knows the risks in his actions.
This gives me the feeling that he's not very kind to his publicist
How come you keep saying you're not hating on them but you keep talking about all the people you know who disliked the movie? What about 92% of the people who did enjoy it? You seem to have completely ignored all of them.
Read some of the cristism and acknowledge your flaws.
What the fuck are you talking about lol ahahahahahahahah
New kim Jung skit by David!!!! Lol
I thought the film was enjoyable but I did have a small issue that this was still an Asian guy doing kung-fu type of trope. A part of me wishes that the Asian guy could have had any other type of power as someone who grew up hearing "You're Asian so you must know kung-fu, right?"
36:00 FANGGG BRUH DUDE!!! XDD
Every thing that happened in the Harry Potter movies carried in to the muggle wrld
I think his main problem is that he was a regular guy who got famous over night.
@who cares I don't know which Simu you watch but the guy seems more humble than most, including these TH-camrs you seem to be supporting the opinions of.
Simu was the weakest main cast member of Shang Chi. He just can't act. Although I won't say he's ugly, he's definitely not very good looking.
although the points you bring up about Simu and social media are valid, there's already multiple celebrities in the Marvel and Disney franchise who promoted their opinions that may cater to "Woke" topics.
Idk if im wrong or not but, praise is something that is earned not asked for, David and Ed are spot on.
I thought "topless" was a Korean tradition not just North Korean?
Would love to see there version David and Ed skit of Shang chi version and kill it lol
