Got emotional listening to Ed’s story about leaving the church. Identifying as a Korean, Christian, and freelance artist it all hits too close to home. Thanks for being so honest and vulnerable in this podcast Ed. I hope you can find a community that will give you that support that you want and deserve.

As an Iraqi person, this was interesting to watch :). About what u said on hospitality, there’s a city called Al-Diwaniyah and it actually means hospitality. It’s generally normal to treat guests this way and be super respectful (and go overboard with offering food😂)

Yep. They squeeze the love out of you. Things that should be dealt with biblically are dealt with culturally. in my church men could not have beards because they were a symbol of pride but mustaches were ok. I couldn’t understand it. Cause Mexicans love their mustaches then they were permissible. Other things like certain haircuts and certain fashion was frowned upon because it was seen as thuggish in the Mexican community. Men couldn’t shave their heads because gang members did it. Pastors would tell kids off if they had super buzzed heads. I dunno. So many stories.

Hey David, I've been a fan for a while and I consider myself as a devout follower of Christ. I'm also Korean American and grew up in a Korean American church. I really appreciated this podcast because it's so real. I really appreciated 2 things: 1. I liked when you guys talked about the manipulation in churches especially from leadership. That's so real even in American churches which I attend one now. 2. This Korean American mindset that we're just trash and we have to earn God's love. As I've been growing in my walk with God, I'm learning (which is really hard actually) that He just loves me for me. I'm not all perfect, but I hope that all churches will be better in these areas and hold themselves accountable. Thank you for these podcasts David!

    Bruhh Ed’s story is crazy!
I relate to that so hard!
People whether in church or not should be paid for their work! Some leaders don’t understand that to do something for free it takes our resources that WE pay for from our own dime. Then they come and say “God will repay you” as a way of using us. It’s not right.
I have also walked away from the church and I’m happy to still believe in God but not the way I was taught.

Ed man, it's heart breaking to hear your story and why you've decided to leave the church. Just know that we are all sinners and make mistakes, including true Christians. I would just say Christ is here just waiting with open arms and obviously you know that. I just hope that you find a fruitful church body in the future that will truly support you and not be a stumbling block for you. As you said earlier in the video, true belief and salvation can never be lost. Love you brother! And love you too David! Big fan of your content here and with JK.

The way this ep. helped me mentally summarize everything as an ex “church” person. I still believe in my faith and spirituality but I can now say I have a well balance point of view w/ “the world” and “Christianity”. Growing up in a Hispanic Christian church.. It’s so surprising how similar Korean and Hispanic Christian church’s work (hope that made sense lol).. in my unpopular opinion lol.

As someone who's had many identical experiences growing up in korean Churches in LA county and the IE... I felt the frustration coming off of Ed and David to my CORE. Although I've finally found a piece of ground to stand on to stay firm in my own faith rather than basing it off of the people who attend/lead the church, I TRULY do understand the sentiment of leaving because of the people at korean presbyterian Churches. I currently am a worker in the church, but I'm not afraid to declare that the korean culture is literally the opposite of how we are taught to act and treat each other in scripture... but unfortunately, korean culture trumps scripture in a lot the settings and situations that I've personally witnessed and been on the receiving end of. Ed if you see this, I hope and pray you can forgive these fools and find your way back to your faith. I, too, shake uncontrollably when trying to share my past experiences in korean Churches. Although these stories and experiences act as an anchor in our hearts for many future experiences, it also is refreshing tool for other listeners who may also be struggling, and it may even be a wake-up call for some. Thanks for sharing, fellas. Leaving here mad as hell from listening to these stories LOL, but also leaving blessed.

    • @JoeCho-FoSho
      @JoeCho-FoSho 3 ปีที่แล้ว

PS. These experiences also include all that pedo and vulnerable girl predatory bs. I'm sad that this seems to be a common thing. I really shouldn't be saying this as a current worker in the church... but I really miss the days when perverts like that would get the (poop) kicked out of them by the legit older brothers who looked out for the younger kids.

  • @justcause1090

I can totally relate. Half-Korean growing up in Korean church and had my faith tested every step of the way. Every moment of evil is a chance for you to choose to grow in your own personal faith, it is not about the community, it's about loving past the commune... the church is a hidden body catholic (universal). God knows those who are His and He will judge. Have faith bro.

David talking about how American church culture is totally different than Korean church culture is totally relatable. My parents finally left a Korean church theyve been apart of for 10+ years. My mother was shocked how different American churches are. Ofc, she and my dad is visiting other American churches until finding another home church. My brother and i left Korean churches around high school because of how toxic it was.

Thank you so much for sharing this Ed. I really appreciate it. I have some issues with my youth group, bc they have no idea what to do with my trauma and anxiety. They've stopped talking to me, and it really made me feel like an outcast and something ppl "can't fix". Yeah no shit you can't, but I'm trying to be vulnerable with you, and that's all I'm asking for. I'm not asking for prayers, but acknowledge my fucking presence, bc im holding onto dear life bc I'm suicidal.

I'm half Vietnamese-Chinese, half White. Mom's Viet-Chinese and is Buddhist, but when she came to the US at 8, she went to a Vietnamese Catholic church. She went there until she was in high school and she hated it so much cause it was so damn caddy. It's so true that you are Vietnamese first, Catholic second or Korean first, Christian second. The same shit was going on at this Catholic church. Gossiping, backstabbing cousins, gangbangers hitting on girls, old Asian parents thinking their kids are angels when the kids are conniving. She only went because her cousins went and when she got a car, she left. I got so many stories about church going families. Can relate David. Love the content!

    So so so relatable.
That said, As an outsider I purposefully chose to attend a Korean Church. It's interesting because in many regards, I took David's exact opposite path.
Growing up, my (core and extended) family was very dysfunctional. So the presentation of the good news of the Kingdom (in Jesus' parables and in the OT) as a big feast, a banquet with loads and loads of food to be enjoyed with lots of people where Death is just a distant and old nightmare, it just resonated with me.
At its best, Korean churches try to embody that. The above imagery re-interpreted through Korean lenses, Imagine a place where God is serving you and your loved ones the communal 식사: the banchan, a Kimchi Jjigae, a Galbi BBQ, a Jeon, and/or whatever your favorite Korean dish is, where you can enjoy a shot of soju, where there's laughter and joy (and perhaps some innocuous disses and most likely lots and lots of Korean "games"), where sadness/death and evil are no more... at its best, that's what Korean churches after-service meals look like... minus the actual physical presence of God, the defeat of Death and soju. LOL.

As a Korean who went to Korean church since middle school I always wondered why nobody would talk or greet me like people from my school. Turns out they already had their own community and if you don't fit the criteria of good looking or your parents being in one of their "hierarchy" they'll straigh up ignore you and treat you like air. Had whole lot of postive experince when I changed my church since college.

Koreans have deep roots in the church. Most of the hospitals and social service centers in Korea were started by Christians. Christians also supported the independence movement when we were colonized by the Japanese, which is why many activists like Yoo Gwan Soon and Ahn Joong Geun were Christians. In the U.S., we organized in the church since the very beginning. Dosan Ahn Chang Ho (the name you see in the freeway interchange in LA) founded one of the first Korean churches in America.

Have you seen P.K's standup on church/prayer? Kind of old but super hilarious.

The bathroom habit being off limits to guests is smart. I imagine its to prevent potential theft and prevent disease spread from contact of their piss or shit.
