    Hannah 100% "got" and connected to this movie more than Ash did. Ash couldn't seem to get past the surreal elements, even though the whole point was that normal is relative, nothing matters except what you care about, and even in a totally alien and foreign world love and kindness would still the only universal goal.

      I get what you're saying, but I'm on Ash's side.
      Imagine I tell you 50 jokes back to back without letting you process any of them, suddenly none of them are funny.
      This movie throws 10 wacky ideas at you every 30 seconds, it got annoying really fast.

    • @IceMetalPunk
      @IceMetalPunk ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@deadlyrobot5179 I get that, and that's how I felt about Thor Love and Thunder. But this is difference, because it's not throwing a bunch of random jokes at you hoping they're funny. It's introducing a bunch of surreal ideas that all connect back to either the plot or the overall themes. Many of the surreal elements aren't even meant to be funny, they're meant to enhance and demonstrate the deeper themes of the movie. So "they're not funny anymore" is kind of missing the point, since they're not *supposed* to all be funny.

    This movie is a modern masterpiece. Everything about it is so well done. It isn't just a good hilarious action movie, but it also has lots of profound philosophy, themes, messages and symbolisms.
    It tackles two opposing approach to existentialism; pessimistic nihilism and optimistic absurdism. Also the duality of google eyes (white outside, black inside) and everything bagel (black outside, white inside) is like a yin-yang of those ideals. Joy is the nihilistic "nothing matters anyway, so might as well end everything" and Evelyn is like the optimistic "nothing matters anyway, so might as well enjoy things" which she learned from Waymond's mentality of absurdity (represented by googly eyes), the idea of enjoying life as it is.

    • @revangerang
      @revangerang ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, literally every moment, every aspect of this film has deep symbolism and themes, so it was never just repeating itself or being random. Even Big Nose's laundry number is 042 aka the meaning of life, the universe and everything. And the random hot dog fingers in their mouths represent the wild variations of kinks and ways of connecting people can have. And how the intention and heart is what matters.
      I am still personally trying to work out the meaning of the Big Nose dog throwing scene, beyond just reminding the viewers of the beginning of the film and that Big Nose and the laundromat exist... Maybe hypocrisy (her being offended at Evalyn hurting the dog) and the way people can abuse the ones they love when trying to get their way? It also seems to be a reference to a woman in real life who did something like that with her dog, so maybe it's hoping to remind people of that incident and prove that even all the wild things in the film might not be that far from reality.

    The film deals with suicide. The daughter was destroying everything including killing herself in each multiverses and in each universe she searches for her mom. No matter what she searches for her.
    Also, the rock scene where she hurls down the cliff and her mom goes after her, fighting to rescue her and finally joins her is actually the most profound especially for those who suffer from mental health. The rock scene deals with a lot of suicidal thoughts. Searching for peace, taking about discovery, then finally giving up and letting go.

    I love the difference in opinions that you guys had because that is literally the film.
    Ash is expecting every single thing in this movie to mean something while Hanna is just enjoying and she’s not too focused on what it means. And if we look at the film; that’s the premise for the Mother & Daughter.
    Joy/Jobu expects life to have meaning, but when she got the ability to be present in all realities (the multiverse), life quickly loses meaning for her. Like she said “everything is a RANDOM rearrangement of particles in a vibrating superposition”. In her view, her life was the result of a random probability. Thats why she had the mentality of “nothing matters anyway so why should I bother trying?”
    Evelyn on the other hand had a different view. She realised that nothing mattered. But because nothing matters, you can do whatever you want. Who cares?? If you want sausage fingers up your mouth? Go for it! It doesn’t matter!

The whole point of the movie is that normal is relative and nothing matters except what we decide is important enough to matter, and that we should choose love and kindness. The hotdog universe is the only one in which Evelyn is in a relationship with a woman, so as she learns to love Diedre in that universe, it helps her empathize with Joy even more, compared to her hiding behind Gong Gong as a reason to be ashamed of Joy's sexuality. I love Jackie and he's really up his acting game over the years. He and Yeoh have great chemistry together from the films they've done over the years and it would've been great to see them together in this. With that being said, I'm so glad he declined the role of Waymon and Ke Hu Quan was cast. Been a fan of his since Temple of Doom and for him to burst back on the scene after being gone for so long and win Best Supporting Actor is crazy. I was so happy for him and Yeoh (who I've been a long time fan of) and everyone else who worked on this film.

    A lot of my friends had a similar reaction to Ash. It sucks because it's one of my favorite films.
    I think many fail to see the plot through the wackiness. Some people, like Hannah can appreciate the wackiness and the creativity and capture the plot and the message through that. There's nothing wrong with the way Hannah or Ash see the film. That is why we have Films. It touches everyone in a different way.
    Parents transfer their trauma and experiences to their children. It happens a lot. And what's difficult for parents to accept is that... they're wrong. They become so caught up in their life and ways that they fail to see how wrong they are. In this movie you see the struggle Ewelyn has throughout the entire film. It took a rollercoaster and confusion and Dimension travel to be able to accept it. Many parents have to jump through so many hoops to admit they are wrong and grow. The message was the same throughout the film and yes there was a lot of wacky stuff. I personally didn't mind it. I didn't notice it until Ash mentioned it. (thanks for that Ash.. you killed this movie for me -___-) lol jk.
    Overall... This movie isn't for everyone. Many people have mixed feelings. One thing is certain. This film deserved the awards it got. For many reasons. The actors for one. Crazy comeback stories with the actors. Two- The story. Name another movie with this plot and Scifi dimension travel like this.... I'll wait. Three the Directors. Look into how they made the film and you'll see how much work they put into this. All in all this movie is cemented as one of the greates scifi movies ever made. And if you don't agree... Sausage fingers.

    4 the people complaining Ash doesn't get symbolism. Let's be honest. Ash is the guy you bring along if you want to bully & steal childrens lunch money or Halloween candy. He's not the guy you invite to a trivia night or call when you're stressed out & need an ear. Not sure I can watch this whole video. If you gave Ash the chance to save a life or tell a fart joke, he'd fart on the person needing help as they died.

    I'm a HUGE fan of this movie, and something I've noticed from watching the movie like a dozen or more times, and watching multiple dozens of reactions to it; If you're in the wrong headspace and your attention lapses, the watching experience of this movie can suddenly become real bad. If you become distracted or just aren't ready to fully absorb it, it might very easily go from being one of the best films ever made (which it is), to feeling like it's nothing more than, "LOL XD Random."
    Almost every single moment in the entire film is necessary to understand and enjoy the rest. It's not like a lot of other movies where you can turn your brain off or look away for a bit and still be fine. And I'm not even saying like, "only smart people will understand it," it's really not hard to grasp at least the surface messages your supposed to get from it. You just gotta be there to take it in.
    Also, it can just be too fast for some people, and that's fine. Nothing's for everybody and it doesn't make you dumb or the movie bad.

  • @Density13

    This movie was VERY relatable not only to immigrant families, but particularly those from Asia. The way the family "functions" is very real for lots of first generation immigrant families. That’s not to say it’s not relatable for others. Over all, this movie is a master piece. Waymond's speech always gets me and I've watched this movie like 10+ times already. Ke Huy Quan (Waymond) came out of retirement for this role, he retired in the early 90's due to a lack of role opportunities for someone of his ethnicity. He played Short Round in Indiana Jones and Data in The Goonies. He won an Oscar for this role as well. Much deserved.

    It's interesting that you two spent so much of the movie wondering if everything was just symbolic of Evelyn's inner struggles, and wasn't "really" happening. I mean sure, it's all super-weird, so it makes sense to wonder that a bit, but you're the first reactors I've seen to really consistently view the movie that way. Great reaction, still! :)
    EDIT: I wonder if that's maybe part of why you both started getting bored with the "wacky" parts - because you viewed them just as a vehicle for the "message" of the film, rather than viewing them as actual events with actual importance and stakes (i.e. saving whole damn multiverse from chaos and destruction).

    The acting and the story was amazing, but what made this movie so unique was the incredibly fast pacing. • @bellz9440

    This movie changed my brain chemistry and helped to let go of so much generational trauma, finally a movie that talked about everything i felt. From a daugthers point of view with mother issues and whos mother is an immigrant, it really truly hit home for me.
    So i always wondered, what's the difference between people who understand this movie and those who don't, i concluded that the answer is EQ, emotional intelligence.
    The movie is all about symbolism that represents generational trauma and the value of life.
    The title "Everything everywhere all at once" is literally the movie in itself. life is nothing without laughter in between the darkness we stuggle with.
