  • My etec 90 outboard motor developed an intermittent fault with one of the fuel injectors. In this video I use EV diagnostics software to diagnose the problem and clean and test the faulty part before eventually having to replace it.

    This is the video every Etec owner should watch, but make sure you buy the injector tester because by connecting it to a battery wont do much.
    The tester is pulsing 1000 times a minute and by putting it in a ultrasonic bath with petrol it can really clean it up...

    Wanted to say THANK YOU for this video. I have the exact same motor with the exact same problem... I even have the same software to read the computer that you used. I was just about to take it to a dealer as I have heard horror stories from people in regards to etec injectors. Your video gave me the insight I needed to fix it! (Ended up taking a chance on a used injector, worked great!). Thanks again!

    You had exactly the same issue as I did on one of my injectors. Like yours, my injectors were immaculately clean internally. One of them developed a high resistance reading, and apparently this year/model (mine is also a 2008 90hp) had a guy on the production line lifting the newly manufactured injectors by the wires. This caused a bad joint in the potting compound where the external wires join to the fine internal wires. I actually cut the bad injector apart to see where the high resistance reading was and that's where I found it. The internal coil and wires were in perfect condition, and it was the completely sealed joint in the potting compound where the open circuit happened.
    It really is a piss off when you have to spend all that money because of faulty manufacturing. I still have one original injector out of the three so wondering how long it will be before that one goes open circuit too.

    Just an observation. When you found the low restance on the injector coil you commented that possibly it was stuck open. That's not how the electrical properties of a solenoid coil works. This is strictly a coil of wire working as an electromagnet. If you're reading a sometimes low resistance then you have an intermittent short in the coil assembly. You could also get an intermittent open in the winding which would result in an infinite resistance reading.
    I was caught off guard when you suggested a weak battery causing your injector problem. The higher voltage to operate the injectors is generated by the cranking motor.
    Pretty good video overall and I learned things I won't have to learn by trial on my upcoming repair.

      Hi, maybe I should have put a disclaimer on the video stating that my mechanical knowledge is extremely limited and that the only reason I attempted the fix was that I couldn't get a tech to do it for me! Thanks for the feedback and good luck with yours.

    My motor shut down wouldn't crank,using software I found it was #3 injector. I took the injector off filled it with redline injector cleaner.I put it back on used the software to rich 1,2 so the motor would crank . Ran it for 10 min #3 started working, after a hour it was running smooth.

    They are bidirectional so they need reverse current.One direction to ingest fuel and then reverse to pressurize and Inject the fuel at 500 psi when the spring liauded nozzle opens.

      I am definitely not an expert I am afraid. It you could get the diagnostic cable and software it would be very useful. If it starts then it must have spark and compression so the next thing to check would be fuel.

      Hi, it's easy to do...save the co efficient file on your laptop and there is an option in EV diagnostics to 'install new injector" which asks for the location of the file.

    Do you think you can use iridium spark plugs. ??

    • @thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259
      @thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Stick with the correct plugs, no need to re-engineer the ignition system.

    • @cpcassone
      @cpcassone หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depending on what year your etec outboard is the plug that they call for may differ. The older etecs from 2004 through 2007 called for platinum spark plugs, typically, Champion QC10PEPB, QC12PEPB, or QC12PEP. BRP made a change and for 2008 and later etec models they called for the longer lasting Champion QC10WEP iridium spark plugs. Pretty much all etec models from 2008 and later, all called for the QC10WEP iridium plugs with the exception of some of the v6 200/225/250 3.3L v6 and 250/300 3.4L v6 etecs from 2008 to 2009 which called for the champion QC8WEP iridium plugs. Anyways, the answer to your question is yes, you can use the iridium spark plugs because the platinum plugs were replaced by the longer lasting iridium plugs. Whatever year or model of etec you have, always use the Original Factory recommended OEM spark plugs that the manufacturer specified for that engine which is Champion brand plugs. If you need to know which plugs your outboard takes here is a link to a chart that shows the recommended plugs for each model by year.

      Check for damage to the wiring of the fuel pump then look into getting the EMM software updated to to the latest version. Has your fuel pump ever been replaced?

      I would use a meter and test the fuel pump to see how much it is drawing. The pump could be failing. I have heard of fuel pumps going bad because of the bushings inside the pumps going bad. The shaft from the electric motor that the impeller spins on doesn’t have any “bearings” so to speak. The end of the shaft is centered inside a rubber bushing to keep the impeller and shaft centered and spinning straight. The ethanol really tends to make rubber and plastic components swell, degrade, and deteriorate. If the bushing in the fuel pump or the impeller have started to develop issues then it could be causing extra load on the electric motor of the fuel pump. When you turn the key on you should hear the electric fuel pump cycle for a few seconds and it should sound smooth and rather quiet. If it sounds loud, scratchy, or makes any whining, buzzing, or grinding sounds and doesn’t have a smooth, uniform, consistent sound to it when it cycles then it sounds like the fuel pump may be on its way out. Does it run at all? If it does run, hook up a fuel pressure gauge to the shader valve and check to see if your fuel pressure is adequate. The fuel pressure should be between 28 to 32 psi. Run the engine while you have the fuel pressure gauge hooked up to the Schrader valve, while you are running the engine, monitor the fuel pressure. If you start to have running issues at certain rpms and the motor stalls or starts running rough or stumbles, check to see if the fuel pressure starts dropping when the running issues are occurring. There are several fuel system tests that you can do on your particular 30hp etec but some of the tests may require some measurement tools to be able to complete the tests. Here is the link to the fuel system test procedures below.

      That's a good shout if your injector passes a resistance test and you are in the US. I am aware of the injectorman but basically he only does the same things as I did ie clean them in an ultrasonic cleaner. If they fail a resistance test however then there is no saving them and he won't accept them.

    I am going to bring up a subject that catches a lot of E-tec owners off guard when it comes Runabilty issues ,, The vapor seperator tank supplys cooled fuel to the injectors at a regulated 28-30 psi .. through its internal calibrated spring and seat fuel presure regulator. There is hidden often ignored inline fine mesh filter in the Vapor seperator tank return line fittng , "The issue" if it plugs fuel in the the injector return line cant flow through the clogged mesh filter and then through the presure regulator allowing it to release excess fuel pressue in the injector fuel pressure rail loop .. and you end up with much higher presure then you should have in the injecter fuel circut.. This forces the the injectors "Rich" expecialy at idle , I have had issues with this tiny inline filter "Or the fine mesh filter inside the inlet of the medium pressure electric fuel pump clogging from a breaking down fuel line leaching dissolved plastic from its liner , I have seen it get this bad ,,th-cam.com/video/q1U0K8Aq054/w-d-xo.html This dissolved plastic gunk can often get through the motors fuel filter and get into the Vapor Seprator tank , where it will plug both these filters and causing untold headaches "so check your fuel lines ,, E-tec injectors are cooled by fuel flowing through the injector loop. "Make sure to service this tiny filter" and make sure your Vapor Seperator tank is clean ,, If in dought "Check the fuel pressure" it should not go much above "30" PSI .use care when removing the line from the fuel fitting as they are plastic,, th-cam.com/video/ur5NkAei3-w/w-d-xo.html
