That totally not Ace Combat moment in the intro though. As for the J-8B's history, it was supposed to have used the data from reverse engineering the MiG-23 they bought from the Egyptians. But visually, it definitely resembles the Su-15 more than the MiG-23.
The Chinese did have some interesting history with the MiG-23, like how the J-8B’s intakes are very much inspired from that on the 23. Around that time, the Chinese even wanted to reverse engineer the MiG-23 because they were seriously lacking good fighters by then and there’s always a chance of Soviets beating China’s ass. Even after that time, the MiG-23 still had use to the Chinese because they wanted to reverse engineer its engine into the upcoming J-10’s intended engine, which was going to be called the WP-15. That project went nowhere, because 1) you’re just not putting turbojets on gen 4s, and 2) they instead used AL-31s (Su-27 engines) from buying Russian Flankers.
So I noticed that every game you played was a full uptier. I've been experiencing the same with the J-8B/J-7E and I've started to suspect that gaijin did something to the matchmaker. I've been loving the J-7E, but have found most games are against F-16s and Mig-29s, while having a repair cost higher than them. As good as the J-7E is, you're still going to get shot down quite often, and it just isn't very profitable. Hopefully they look at the repair costs with the the addition of gen-4, failed BR decompression at 11.0 (12.0's struggle to get games at decent queue times so you get sucked up to help them), and the J-7E being no longer the top-dog in the department it used to be. J-8B at least has a better repair cost.
