The machine guns are actually not .50 cals, they are Swedish 13.2mm guns, the later jet variants of the J21 however changed to .50 cals for standardization.
they are FN Browning 13.2mm, *based* on the Browning .50. That extra 0.5mm let them use explosive rounds and not neglect the awesome performances of the Ma Deuce.
The issue with this plane is that anyone in something that turns better than a FW-190 can beat you, providing they can escape your guns in first turn or two, depending on speed of merge. The speed bleed is nice for reversals or the legendary "oNe CiRcLe", but with poor climb, energy retention, overheating engine and average speed i really do not have many good things to say about it. It pulls well (for 2 turns) and has guns. That's it.
The irony is that with the right maneuvers, the 190 can easily beat the J/A-21s by forcing them to bleed too much in an energy fight or forcing them to higher speeds and doing its own reversal.

The J21A-1/-2 are probably my favourite aircraft in the game. I just love jumping into the middle of a furball and exiting with 2-3 kills. And the amount of bombers ive killed with these guns, just pitching up and scoring kills while still a kilometer below them makes me smile.

I have 3kd and 3.5kd on the sea fury and j5n1 by doing 1v1 energy fighting (no kill stealing, no rat thirdparty gaming) and I don't remember well I believe i'm 39 to 7 on the j21? I don't remember besides i uninstalled game to free space for cached simulations) and even yet I didn't like it when it was 3.3, worse even at 4.3.

I have to strongly disagree with spit here, while i do like to take it out sometimes. It has awful climb, the engine is an absolute oven, it doesnt produce much energy and its retention is some of the worst at its br, its turn rate is usable, and has top speed simmilar to a zero. The guns are amazing tho. its overall performance is similar to 3.0 aircraft. It has troubles out speeding zero's and cant compete in sustained fights against 109 G2, god bless your soul you dont run into a j2m2 who has some competance. Just fly the j22, j26, bf109 g2 instead. (also spit is gonna take a lot of flak for posting this video because this is a controversial plane for some reason)
@@Spitflyer its lack of energy generation and retention makes it very difficult to dodge multiple times because it needs quite a bit of speed to do it because it bleeds so much of it. Side climbing can fix the altitude problem but it'll take you more time to get to the battle field which will put your team at a number disadvantage. Its lack of energy generation can make it very difficult to regain position after a fight ex. you get into a fight. you loose 500m and there is an enemy above. in that situation you'll have a very difficult time regaining position because of the lacking energy generation.

What he was doing was not energy fighting, but rather wait for people to tail sit him so that he could one circle them. That is NOT energy fighting, you energy fight when you try to keep an energy advantage over your adversary while forcing it to run out of their energy, by either keeping your altitude, or speed, or trading speed for altitude or altitude for speed. All the J21 can do is one turn and head on.

Just going to share my thoughts. I think the J-21 is mid. The only reason people think it's excellent or OP is because of the guns; admittedly, the guns are excellent, but the engine performance and airframe are absolutely not good enough against the competition. Typhoon Mk1b/L? Smashes this thing in the dogfight. J2M2? Same thing but more severe. Ki-61? Even worse. Bf 109 G-2? Probably needs the altitude advantage, but gets it easily. P-51D-5? Similar deal but the climbrate is a bit worse (still better than the J-21). Yak-3? Take it into the verticle, control your throttle and the J-21 dies. Spitfire F Mk IX? Best you can do is stick the headon or start off with an altitude advantage (which won't last long, especially given the Spit's climbrate). A6M Zero? Same thing but more annoying for the J-21. Hell, even the F6F-5N gives this thing a run for its money. And this is JUST at 4.3. By comparison, there are FAR less vehicles that the J-21 outmatches in a dogfight, made less impressive by the fact that basically all the above can do the same but better. Things like the Firebrand and the S-199 are good examples, because the J-21 will only beat these vehicles not because it is good, but because these two planes are just bad. Now, in practice, the J-21 doesn't perform as bad as in theory. Why? Because people are dumb enough to take the headons, greedy enough to make horrendous mistakes, and generally not knowledgeable enough to fully realise their strengths and/or the J-21's flaws. In an environment where people incorrectly rely on gun performance rather than plane performance, of course people are going to think that this thing is OP. All you have to do is play to YOUR strengths, not take unnecessary risks, and suddenly the J-21 is exposed to be what it is. A plane that relies solely on its fantastic guns to compensate for its inadequate plane performance.
The Goat, Mr.spit do a vid s199 cuz i heard it is a good dogfighter too so itll be similar to the j21a-1, at 3.3 its an amazing plane. Remember, its the pilot not the plane.
It is most definitely not a good dogfighter. The airframe is OK, but the engine is ridiculously underpowered and its energy retention is some of the worst in the BR. Having flown and spaded it- and I would say I'm a capable pilot- it has nothing exceptional about it.
That P-51D-5 in the beginning did literally everything wrong all the way to the end. He should know he can just outrun and outclimb this thing. You can easily just boom and zoom a J21 into submission if you start higher. Even when he knew he was fucked he didn't even try to extend on the deck, he just turned back around like a moron.

It had 13,2 mm auto cannons, with 70% greater impact energy than the .50 and the same projectile velocity at 1500 m (4500 ft) as the .50 had at the muzzle. It also had twice the firing rate of the Browning .50. It was a Belgian vastly improved FN design based the Browning .50. The drawings and production tooling was rushed to Sweden when Germany invaded Belgium. It used armour pearcing, explosive, incendary, tracer and standard projectiles. Post war, some 13,2 autocannons were replaced with surplus Browning .50s, which were cheap and plentiful with cheap ammo and half the firing rate. The Browning .50 machine guns did fit in the FN 13,2 auto cannon mounts. It also had a couple of 20 mm autocannons.
This thing kills in a headon as well, with the armoured cockpit (including bulletproof glass), and with the engine in the back, you can tank many frontal hits and just shrug them off.
Wow the -2 seems so much better than the -1. I usually play the a21-3 because that performs better than the j21-1 but I might buy this as well to see if its better than both that I have been using

I find that the A21-3 doesn't over heat as much but when you use MEC it's dam fun this Bird is one of my highest kills game with 9 kills I have the most ace games in this the other is the franch sb2c helldiver the wolf in sheep's clothing it's so much fun..
The few times i used this for air superiority in ground rb i absolutely murdered everyone with it, i even killed a few jets and other props around 5.0 to 6.0 with it
I personally disagree with you on best cannons by caliber, the premium ki 61-lb has 50s that only need 1 round to connect to snap wings off of anything

The J21's are a great all rounders, they're not that great at turning and not the best in boom and zoom (Rip Speed is just depressing :< ). But from my experience theyre great as a support plane, trying to help teammate's in need with the occasional 1v1 dogfights.

I'm standing by my statement of this plane being one of the if not the best for dogfighting in random battles. I've played multiple variants and gotten hundreds of kills between them and this is the only conclusion I can make. Ofc it's worse than A and B plane at X and Y, but the "jack of all trades" mantra applies. I'm really not sure what the fuss about me being wrong about this comes from. Just for added details, I've quite comfortably gone 4:1 across all the variants I've played of this plane which is above what I normally pull, even for this tier

You're coming to the same conclusions as me when this thing was at 3.0 and I had ~500 ARB games. G-6 is at the same BR and even the same tech tree and will run circles around the J21, you can even take gunpods to match the firepower.

I've played the plane, I enjoy it, I do well in it, I find its pitfalls workable and its strengths highly beneficial and I can prove that I have played it a lot and done well. There's no doubt that you can find a plane that does X and Y better (which there are plenty) but regardless of what you play, there's always going to be a plane that climbs higher or flies faster or turns better or has better energy retention or fights better at sea level or has better guns but all I'm saying is that if you can START on an alt advantage or at least on the same level as someone then the ability of this plane to engage others makes it extremely capable and I've shown that through my experience playing the plane and the results I have achieved which are above that of normal (which is why I mentioned my KDR rather than trying to start a pissing contest).

Haven't seen difference between A1, but the A3 is more focused on CAS Ground pounding but both variants still keep the wonderful armaments. The 13 mm are no joke like seriously
Honestly, the Swedish 20mm/13mm cannons feel insanely powerful, it rarely takes me more than 1 short burst to essplode anything smaller than a Bomber. They feel even stronger than those german MinengeshoB 20mils tbh.

I do state in the beginning of the video that side climbing is a must in this thing. You HAVE to start on the front foot

This is one of the few aircraft I managed to get an absurd k/d in before air RB matches were lowered from an hour to 25 minutes of gameplay.

I personally found this thing to be a very hot brick, within one turn I'd have stalled out and blacked my engine from heat

The J21's are a great all rounders, they're not that great at turning and not the best in boom and zoom (Rip Speed is just depressing :< ). But from my experience theyre great as a support plane, trying to help teammate's in need with the occasional 1v1 dogfights.
So theyre good at killing afk people. Insane

The pilot is hard to snipe on this plane in a headon. The guns just soak up the damage, without them being damaged.

I'm standing by my statement of this plane being one of the if not the best for dogfighting in random battles. I've played multiple variants and gotten hundreds of kills between them and this is the only conclusion I can make.
Ofc it's worse than A and B plane at X and Y, but the "jack of all trades" mantra applies. I'm really not sure what the fuss about me being wrong about this comes from.
Just for added details, I've quite comfortably gone 4:1 across all the variants I've played of this plane which is above what I normally pull, even for this tier

Congrats, but you can get a 12:1 with an F-84F and even with that wont make the plane good
You're coming to the same conclusions as me when this thing was at 3.0 and I had ~500 ARB games. G-6 is at the same BR and even the same tech tree and will run circles around the J21, you can even take gunpods to match the firepower.

I've played the plane, I enjoy it, I do well in it, I find its pitfalls workable and its strengths highly beneficial and I can prove that I have played it a lot and done well. There's no doubt that you can find a plane that does X and Y better (which there are plenty) but regardless of what you play, there's always going to be a plane that climbs higher or flies faster or turns better or has better energy retention or fights better at sea level or has better guns but all I'm saying is that if you can START on an alt advantage or at least on the same level as someone then the ability of this plane to engage others makes it extremely capable and I've shown that through my experience playing the plane and the results I have achieved which are above that of normal (which is why I mentioned my KDR rather than trying to start a pissing contest).

The ONLY reason why I mention stats is stating that it’s above my normal stats for that tier meaning I do better in the J21s over other planes at that tier which means the J21s overall performance is not as bad as you think if you care to minimise it’s weaknesses in-game like I have advocated for
tbh I don't know what you're on about. Factually the J21 is a very bad turner, anything that turns better than an Fw190 will outturn it. The only thing that goes for it is the armament which in fact is very good
Why the A2? Are there differences with A1 or A3?
Haven't seen difference between A1, but the A3 is more focused on CAS Ground pounding but both variants still keep the wonderful armaments.

Honestly, the Swedish 20mm/13mm cannons feel insanely powerful, it rarely takes me more than 1 short burst to essplode anything smaller than a Bomber. They feel even stronger than those german MinengeshoB 20mils tbh.
