- We visit Kate Pierson of The B-52's at her Lazy Meadow in the state New York. Here she tells the story behind 'Love Shack'. A short documentary by Top 2000 a gogo from 2019 (Dutch Public Television).
I got to meet her last year after their show and she is wonderful, the band was great, and she had something kind to say to everyone during the meet n greet, a very genuine and graceful woman. A memory I will treasure for sure.
Same here. Before her Chicago show. She was gracious and very sweet and not at all rushed. I wish u could post our pic here because you wouldn’t believe how amazing she looks.
Loved the MTD videos in the 80's, my kids and now grandkid love watching them also. Timeless.
This woman (and Cindy, too) can seriously move some air!!!! The harmonies those two create are just otherworldly!!!! Ethereal, super-nova powerful, the whole range!!! **They not no limburger!!!!***
I love the B-52's! My friend used to work as a waitress at The Four Seasons hotel in Boston. She served them once and remembered how they drank over $1000 in booze at one meal (which was way more than she even made in a week). When Fred says "where did the money go?!" that might be the answer. ….?
Hopefully they gave a proper 15% tip.

Good lord, Kate Pierson ages gracefully! I remember when this song came out. I hated it then, but it definitely grew on me. Plus, I was a kid then, and my taste in music was less than stellar in 1988, though that year is my favorite year of music.
Lmao...I felt the same way when I was 13 in 1989 when radio stations and MTV were playing it non-stop. I remember running away whenever I would hear it. Lol
Months later ,the song grew up on me and I finally enjoyed listening to it. My favorite part is the middle of the song when Fred goes " I can't hear you" . I crack up laughing when I hear that part of the song.

The blend of Kate and Cindy's vocals on "Looking for the love getaway, headed for the love getaway, love getaway" is perfection.
The combination of Kate's and Cindy's voices is a unique musical instrument in and of itself. After all these years it's a sound that still gives me goosebumps.
The ending of Private Idaho is a prime example of this. Goosebumps evertime.

Basically my favorite song of all time. I remember when it was released it was so fun. 20 years ago I worked in an audio equipment rental shop in the back of the Music Store. Every speaker that came and went got tested and it was with "Love Shack" the song was on repeat for years in the test rig. It's a great song for PA system diagnosis. I love the song 😎

I dunno, I know both of them, but it seems to me that in france it's the opposite... Planet Claire has even be used for some TV shows... Love shack is almost not known in france.
It's hard to forget the lyrics of that song. If ever I wake up in a place with pink air, red trees and headless inhabitants I'll know exactly where I am. :)

Reminds of a camping trip in the summer after senior year of HS... one of our friends had the B-52's playing for 3 days straight... good times.

I love how even though they hadn't made an album since the early 90s, they made a comeback in 2008 with Funplex and they still had THE THING that made them so funky and magical. I highkey hope they get to pull that off again, I'm sure they'd still sound amazing in their 70s!!!!
Cosmic Thing released a few months before i was born. My mum would always play it in the car and it became a really defining album of my childhood. I still love it.
Thank you for posting this. I saw them in 1990 Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts, Mansfield, MA, USA. Great show, and Kate's voice.. and the whole band rocks my socks. Really inspires writing music. "So says, MrTom.. so it so it was written.."

VladR1024 I just ignore guys like that. He’s irrelevant. I’ve actually stayed in Kate’s motel in the Catskills. It’s really cool and in a great area, near the Phoenicia river. I love that area of NY. Many great musicians live up there still including Dr. Know, the guitarist from Bad Brains, he actually works at this great Heath food supermarket on the road between Woodstock and Phoenicia. Also, regarding the song, I’ve always liked the song. It’s fun, campy like all their songs.

True story: A couple of years ago we were on a road trip from Toronto to Regina. On the highway just north of the Sault there was a a sign advertising an ammo store. Love Shack was on the stereo as we passed it and exactly when we heard Bang! Bang! on the stereo I saw a big sign outside the store. It said: Bang! Bang!.

I always thought the B-52s sucked. Then I saw them in concert a few years ago. I thought it would be an OK concert. It turned out to be a spectacular concert. The audience was enjoying it until they got to Roam. For some reason, the place went nuts and from then on people were dancing in the aisles...dancing on the seats...just total chaos.
On stage, they seem like it''s all totally random but somehow comes together great. Definitely the strangest band I've ever seen.

"Tin Roof Rusted" i think i always just thought she was saying "En Route" maybe i though "Rushing" i dont know i honestly never thought much about it, it is far from my favorite B-52;s track. but anything with Cindy and Kate harmonizing is amazing. they are not a band where i analyze lyrics though.

Interesting spot. Funny thing Is "Tin roof! Rusted" was inspired by Cindy, when she saw a rusted tin roof when the band was together one day and said it the way it was used in the song. No other meaning. It was about a rusted roof. Awesome!
I actually have a lot more questions about where Rock Lobster came from. I saw them in Vancouver in the 90’s it was amazing!

Tin roof, Busted. - You are right though, it did help and/or inspire some folks. Every time I would hear it, I would yell "Busted" instead of "rusted." Because that's what it was about. My voice eventually became louder and louder than yours, then it inspired me to begin telling people what was going down. Moreover, that saved a lot of people, then it saved an Angel.

This was Kates band. I know they were all a uni band but even from rock lobster etc, it was all her voice. Also, Japan was the only place where "Love shack" was famous? Go to New Zealand.
