Slip-sliding away, those were the days. I worked as a flag boy in Mtl. at turn 7 in 1979. The instructions were pretty simple: If you hear of an accident on the radio wave the flag that will be announced, do not move towards the accident. Jeans, T-shirt and a GP Montréal vest. 01:04 1979 battle with Arnoux in Dijon. Absolutely epic!
His driving ability speaks for itself . Un known to most was his mechanical abilities . He designed and built the first . IFS . Independent front suspension . Racing snowmobile . In one race re engineered a good snowmobile clutching system into a great system still used today , his mechanical aptitude added to his prowess as a driver . Little thought of fact . Only person to be hired to drive a f1 car having never raced in Europe . Hired by Ferrari from formula Atlantic racing .

As a Canadian have to disagree about his brother . His brother has a long documented history of dirty driving . Especially on a sled . Not to mention preferred treatment from bombardier , and promoters . To a sever extent . Not very respected by his fellow racers
Gilles forever! Back then as a teenager he was my idol and he still is today. His passion, his courage, his driving skills and his irrepressible will to win made Gilles my favorite driver and a hero. there was no championship for him. All that mattered to him was racing. He "only" focused on this one race and if he won, it seemed to me as if he had won the championship. and that's exactly what people loved about him. This and his spectacular actions in the race made him unique. I have several vehicles and each vehicle always has its legendary 27 on the license plate. Gilles name as a sticker sticks on all rear windows. GILLES PER SEMPRE ❤❤❤🏁🏁🏁
@dinorauseo3847 and he did not need a network. He achieved everything by himself. He was authentic. Still I believe he wanted to win the WC or to surpass the record of Jacky Stewart, 27 wins. In his last race, he reduced the pace when he was in the lead to save fuel so he was not that crazy.
I was 11 years old when he died, and I still remember the place I was when my father told me Gilles has died as he had just heard it on the radio. Ayrton Senna came into F1 just 2 years after. I would have loved see those 2 battle together on track.
A true racer, but one that drove with his heart, not always his head. That is why Enzo loved him so much. One of the greatest World Champions we never had.....
To be a World Champion requires a driver to use his head. He must at least get the balance right. This was Villeneuve’s problem. Without that balance he would never be World Champion. Some of the stories that have come out from teammates illustrate this pretty well. Jody Scheckter tells the story of how Villeneuve decided he could change up without lifting. One of two things was going to happen. Scheckter said it would be too costly on fuel. Next race Villeneuve ran out of fuel. You need to be smarter than that.
Used to watch him in Formula Ford...he would find grip off line, in the marbles and with two wheels off. Never saw anyone make so many outside passes in impossible places
I still remember watching him in the TV at that epic race in Montreal 81. Truly amazing his talent to tame the powerful Ferrari turbo under deluge (and missing parts).
I watched him at Mosport mosses corner he slid into the grass hammered the gas and zigzaged full throttle back onto the track like it was nothing, he loved getting sideways always great to watch.
How does anyone measure that? Some of his fellow competitors expressed that opinion at the time but how did he compare with other like Jim Clark or Jochen Rindt? What about Sebastian Vettel or Max Verstappen? How is it possible to make such comparisons across so many generations?
Back in these days, the word 'safety' hardly existed at all. A driver could have a huge crash with the car in flames and the racing would continue, THAT'S crazy. JYS was 'laughed at' when he tried to point out that racing had to get serious about safety, and he led the charge on this for many years, as more and more driver's were being killed. Since Villeneuve's death at Zolder in 1982 there have been 'many' very serious accidents in Grand Prix racing, whereby the driver has survived thanks to vastly improved safety, and the first driver to be killed 'in a race' since Gilles death in 1982, was Roland Ratzenberger at Imola in 1994, Ironically at the corner called Villeneuve.
Gilles, a legend. A part of us left with him..
😀

ah, must've been quite an experience during those times
È STATO È RIMARRÀ IL PIÙ GRANDE PILOTA DI SEMPRE ❤
😀
He was the master of the wet and slippery of the slides and of the fog . All of these came from his snowmobile experience
100000%
definitely an aspect of his racing career that seems to be a bit overlooked

The pride of Canada as his son and brother, the reason I became an F1 fan way back in 1975

The only idol i've had in my entire life ! 27 forever 🏆🏆🏆 Salut Gilles 👍👍👍

Still the most exciting driver ever in a F1 car; a way more enduring legend than several F1 Champions
Gilles Villeneuve is the greatest Canadian of all time. :)
Tommy Douglas was the best but I agree, JV was an awesome fellow.

it definitely would have been a lot more fun to watch than Senna's battles with Prost or Mansell
There’s Ayrton Senna, Gilles Villeneuve … and the rest. Pure skill and audacity.
C'est notre légende nationale. L'égal d'un Senna. 😭

And he got there through sheer talent. Didn't buy his rides like a couple of fellow Canadians.
Gilles per sempre Sei unico R.I.P
Salut Gilles, thank you for burning so brightly and still being an inspiration

Enzo personally picked Gilles as his driver. That’s how much he loved him.
What a driver, an example for the new generations of pilots
"Here was a man who's sheer raw talent marked him out as a superstar." - Murray Walker
The MOST COURAGEOUS F1 driver of all time 🏎🏎🏎⚜️⚜️⚜️
Just think what he could have done in today's cars. RIP
The BEST
Such a shame we lost an incredible Canadian racer. Like # 920!!!
He and Senna ♥️
He & Sir Jackie Stewart are two of my childhood heroes.
absolutely brilliant !
Masterclass in car control 👍
He had the biggest pair of balls in F1 history
SALUD GILLES
Come lui nessuno mai❤
Genio😊
😀
One of the best!
Genio total !!!! ...
Top 5 F1 Drivers in my books!👌🏻
Gilles is the reason I watched F1 from my teenage years. I then went to Montreal to learn to race Formula Fords. A massive racing fan ever since.
must have been quite the thrill to watch his unique driving as a teen
One of the greatest
Forza Gilles 💖💖💖💖💖💖🙌👏👍🙏😍🤩😉
😀
Amazing memories 💔💔💔💔🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Gilles: "Downforce, I don't need no stinking downforce".
Salut gille👍✌️
He was the Villeneuve of Sennas.
The times when drivers were literally sitting on the front wheels. Crazy indeed!
Gilles was the fastest driver of all time. Senna was the best driver of all time….miss them both.

If this was today, both he and Arnoux would have been assessed penalty points for those epic two laps. Really a shame what F1 has become.
Great pilot F-1.
This was Formula one. Real petrol heads.

The Ferrais were off when Gilles was there. They should've hired Jacques. It would've been a happier ending for the family.
Grnio😊
rallyman !..
GV should be an honorary member of The Crazy Canucks
The fact he did this while driving one of the worst cars Ferrari produced is mind boggling.
If it was raining during qualifying Gilles would take pole by a couple of seconds sometimes!
That Ferrari was loose as shit .
Gilles étais au dessus tous les MOTS
point
rare ce sourrire a 0:40
É um piloto muito arrojado.
I wonder Toto call in Max 😂
No DRS
Unhinged, like Colin McRae. At least he didn't kill any children. Although, Jacques claims he did try on many occasions.
