Yeah, that's a cultural reference that would probably be lost on people from Andy & Alex's generation. These days, it isn't considered particularly odd or remarkable for a guy to have long hair, and really hasn't excited much comment since... oh, the mid-80s or so, for the most part -- but back in the early-to-mid-'70s, it was *definitely* not considered fashionable or acceptable, especially outside of college towns or areas which were already known for having a strong streak of non-conformism to begin with.
It is funny how different countries can be. I was in high school in the 70s and almost every guy in my school had long hair to at least his shoulders. Of course it was in a Vancouver BC. Some of the guys you would least want to mess with had hair part way down their backs.
I was 2 yrs old then so I was a long hair as well, no haircut yet. I was a part time nudist and pissed wherever I wanted to. I was a badass until bath time. Those were the days!
Love the Bob Seger induction into the R&R Hall of Fame. Loved Kid Rocks speech. Another good one was Led Zeppelin with Jack Black. Seeing Robert Plant tear up when Heart played Stairway to Heaven with John Bonhams son on the drum gave me goosebumps. Love to watch the inductions, so many great artists. But I think Seger & Zeppelin have been the best.

Exactly...I had a ponytail to my waist from 1972 to 2000. In those 28 yrs, I must have been insulted at least 20 times by some goof saying " Are you a girl or a boy?" I always answered them the same way. I'd look them square in the eye and say "How bad do you want to find out?" Seemed to stop the bullying right away.

Nine Tonight is also fantastic, a few years after Live Bullet so has a few more hits into the early 80s... Bob and the band just always bring it... had that on double vinyl and it was playing all the time when i was a kid.
He was overly cautious and didn't want to go into debt, so he kept all his early tours close to Detroit. His first hit was in 1969, but they didn't break big until this live album
Bob Seger is the real deal. He had been playing in local Detroit bands since 1961, and you are hearing, in this song, a man 14 yrs into a career of obscure struggle. He had seen little success outside the Detroit area, where we loved him, and this song is his account of the mental/emotional strain of the experience. This 1975 live album was very well received, but still did not translate to stardom. Check this quote out: "Yet still, Seger had a popularity imbalance. In June 1976, he was a featured performer at the Pontiac Silverdome outside Detroit in front of nearly 80,000 fans. The next night, Seger played before fewer than a thousand people in Chicago". ~ It is known When Bob finally reached the pinnacle of success in the late 70s and 80s, it was so gratifying for we fans from his hometown region, to see an amazing storyteller and artist get his due. It felt like a victory for both Bob and the city that supported him until the rest of America caught up. It is also reported that he is a good, down to earth man, who makes time for fans. in a blue collar town, that still counts for something.

"Ramblin Gamblin Man" will show you where he really came from in the 60's with his gritty Detroit rock n' soul. He paid dues for a decade before he hit big, as he's said "I've never had a tour bus because we went straight from station wagons to jets". Also worked in an auto plant, the real deal, that's why praise for fake-ass blue collar-wannabe Springsteen grinds my gears. Keep it rolling!

When Kid Rock inducted Bob Seger to the Roock and Roll Hall of fame, he said "Bob Seger has payed more dues than all the artists on the current top 40 list combined". He wasn't kidding. Bob Seger is beyond S tier.
Alex and Andy, how can you not call this an S? it is one of the best live songs ever by one of the best rock singers ever, backed by one of the best bands ever. That's without even getting into lyrics' poetry and imagery. No one else can invoke a mood or an emotion like Seger and the Silver Bullet Band in just a few spare notes. I'm a writer and I'm sitting here shaking my head and bereft of the words to describe what he means to an entire generation
He does have a ton of songs, but Night Moves... Night Moves, Night Moves, and Night Moves... and if I didn't mention it, Night Moves. After that, Against the Wind, Hollywood Nights and Mainstreet are must listens.
Night moves makes me feel like I was a teenager during that era, even though I'm decades removed from it. After that, my personal favorites are "Still the Same" "Hollywood Nights" and "Rock and Roll Never Forgets"

At that time not everyone was comfortable with guys having long hair. From one who was asked to leave a restaurant in Dallas and made fun of in a Mid West Texas town because of it at just the time this song came out.
Yes that feeling was everywhere and my hair wasn't even that long. My solidarity with black lives came from that feeling even though the hatred was 100 thousand times worst.
Yeah and Ramblin Gamblin Man too, which was a big hit for him before anyone knew who he was. It never got a lot of classic rock radio airplay, but Tarantino used it in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood last year, giving it a little bit of a comeback
Chase Wingard no disrespect but why do so many love Fire Lake? IMO it’s one of the weakest songs he’s put out. Corny lyrics, weird countryish style. Shame on the Moon is far better if you’re into Country Bob.
The lyric "is that a woman or a man" relates to the long hair culture wars in the 60's and 70's. This was the common insult thrown at men with long hair. Your generation probably doesn't experience that, but you have your own battles to fight.
If you want to enjoy another magnificent "band on the road" song, you have to do Jackson Browne "The Load Out/Stay A Little Longer. Of course it must be the live version. ENJOY.
There’s a lot on that album to love. Like Running On Empty, or The Road. The coolest thing about The Road is the venue change in the middle. Many years ago I used that song to teach my late son’s elementary school class about echolocation. Jackson Browne is a killer songwriter but he doesn’t have Seeger’s voice.
Otis Dylan That album was recorded on the road, in hotel rooms, on the bus, in venues. In the case of The Road, the first half of the song was recorded in a hotel room and the second half in a venue, it may have been Meriwether Post Pavillion in Columbia, MD.

Such a great lyricist and story teller. One of the greatest lines ever written is in the Bob Seger song "Against the Wind", Seger fans already know what I'm gonna say, the line is "I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then". EVERY time I hear that line, I close eyes and shake my head not on purpose, it just kinda happens.
Absolutely right when you said "Seger fans already know what I'm gonna say." The funny thing is that Bob put that line in as a place saver, intending to replace it because he thought it sounded dumb and didn't make sense. His friends who he ran the song by convinced him to keep it in. Lucky for him, because that's the line that grabs you.

Night Moves. Note the shift in the lyrics in the third verse, where he’s now looking back on his younger years and ruminating on what it means to get older. Some of the most poignant lyrics ever.
Kent Zepick love that song. Seger let’s the song breathe too over a few bars. Slows it all down till it almost stops. Very evocative, reflective “with autumn closing in...”. Master story teller and songwriter/ musician.
Yes, they simply must do this song to get the proper exposure to Bob Seger. Bob Seger is a great choice for these guys that seem to have a lot of Boomer subscribers. Remember Seger was in his Thirties when this "breakthrough" album was released. The whole album is a masterpiece IMO. They could do a listen to the whole thing and that would be epic for us, would it not?

When he barely gets out that "last night I woke to sound of thunder" and his voice is wavering, I AT LEAST tear up every time. The dude is a master of invoking emotions through his singing. Its incredible
Top 3 for me, but it paints THE best visual of all his songs. I think the guys should hold off on Main Street and Roll Me Away and do a couple of up tempo ones next.
In 1975, on my 21st birthday a bunch of us went to an outdoor concert up in Seattle. There were a lot of acts, including Bachman Turner Overdrive and Little River Band. One of the bands couldn't make it because the singer was sick (Flash Cadillac). So at the last minute a completely unknown band replaced them - Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band! They knocked us out! I've been a fan ever since.
Grew up with Seger, among the many others you guys are reacting to. Used to sing this to my kids when rocking them to sleep. So fun to watch another generation dig it.

All his tunes are decent, with most in the “story teller” mode... his earlier work tended to be grittier. To hear Seger at the other end of the spectrum you definitely need “Hollywood Nights” or Rambling Gambling Man” & “Kathmandu”...

If you were growing up in the early to late 60's and had long hair it was more than a cliche. If you were in the wrong neighborhood it could get you in real trouble fast - or worse. I think the point he was making was 'playing the star' involved more than just 16 hour road trip, one night stands, and sweat pour out your body. It also involved other real dangers too. At least where I grew up. His statement about you always seem out numbered and you don't dare make a stand meant a lot to many of us that grew up during that era. For us, you had to watch your back, don't get caught alone. I didn't even live in the worst areas. I knew of areas much worse than mine, which I pretty much avoided as much as possible. They used standard bully tactics. The never missed an opportunity to push it and never seemed to be alone. There was always the leader. Sometime you could get out of it if you could take out the leader - fast. Been there, done that - when there was absolutely no other way. These were no joking, cliche, matters where I grew up - many people took it very seriously. They just started the harassing with 'is that a lady or a man' before it got pushed further.

Bob Seger is from the area I grew up in, in Michigan. He was far from an overnight sensation. He toured with his band, who are also local musicians, and played everywhere he could for almost 20 FUCKING YEARS before he became well known. For all those years, he played like a star but wasn't.
My favorite Bob S song. Guys your going to love him. Other great songs “Like a Rock,” was used in Chevy Truck commercials. Bob gave the song to them for them to use. Ol Time Rock & Roll” was used in the movie “Risky Business” probably have heard both of these.✨Then “Night Moves,” Still the Same” Against the Wind” I don’t think he has a bad song. I had completely forgotten about "Still the Same". One of his best. Chevrolet ruined "Like a Rock" for me. I can remember watching football games on Sunday and every other commercial was the one that played that song. I got sick of it.🤮

This album “Live Bullet” is one of the best live albums ever, it was recorded in Detroit’s old Cobo Hall, Sefer and the band is from Michigan. Rolling Stone’s famous music critic, Dave Marsh, described the feel of this performance as Bob’s last ditch effort to cross from respected artist to a super star, it’s amazing. The song “Night Moves” is from his best-selling and best critically acclaimed album Night Moves, an all-time gem.
Was lucky enough to make this concert in my home town of Detroit at Cobo Hall, downtown on the Detroit river. No sex ever left the lasting impression as that song live!! First time I seen Bob Seger was at “Notre Damn” high school on 8 Mile. They were known as the “Bob Seger System”. It cost 4 cans of soup to get in. Last school dance they ever played. They had just came out with “2 + 2 Is On My Mind”. Great song, and the rest is history!!!
There's a term used in stage acting, "topping ". Topping refers to, in essence, peaking too soon. If you hit your high note, anger, sadness, love, etc.then you can't top that in a later act. The idea is you build up to a climax instead of peaking prematurely. Bob Seeger seems to be aware of topping.
First of all I really enjoy your reaction to music videos and it is very obvious that you're both very knowledgeable when it come to music. When it comes to " Seger " he's not just a great story teller, he is a Fucking Legend in rock music. Your analogy is so spot on about " Turn the Page ", I have worked as a contract worker in the nuclear power industry for over 44 years and driven to almost everywhere across the U.S. on assignments. I know 16 + hours of straight driving feels like and just to get to the next job and do it over again. You guys keep doing the great job and I'll be checking in to see what's on your list. Two of my favorite songs of his are the slower ones, Mainstreet and Shame On the Moon.
His words are direct; his thoughts are uncluttered. He does more with 10 syllables than most do with a complete stanza. Main Street hits deeply.

Also worked in an auto plant, the real deal, that's why praise for fake-ass blue collar-wannabe Springsteen grinds my gears. Keep it rolling!

Alex and Andy, how can you not call this an S? it is one of the best live songs ever by one of the best rock singers ever, backed by one of the best bands ever. That's without even getting into lyrics' poetry and imagery. No one else can invoke a mood or an emotion like Seger and the Silver Bullet Band in just a few spare notes. Saw him in concert 1976. He opened for Black Sabbath. Most of us left when he was done.

Even today I'd argue long hair on men isn't really socially acceptable. Society seems to prefer men to look like they are ready for the military.

At that time not everyone was comfortable with guys having long hair. From one who was asked to leave a restaurant in Dallas and made fun of in a Mid West Texas town because of it at just the time this song came out.
Yes that feeling was everywhere and my hair wasn't even that long. My solidarity with black lives came from that feeling even though the hatred was 100 thousand times worst.

Chase Wingard no disrespect but why do so many love Fire Lake? IMO it’s one of the weakest songs he’s put out. Corny lyrics, weird countryish style. Shame on the Moon is far better if you’re into Country Bob.

The lyric "is that a woman or a man" relates to the long hair culture wars in the 60's and 70's. This was the common insult thrown at men with long hair. Your generation probably doesn't experience that, but you have your own battles to fight.

There’s a lot on that album to love. Like Running On Empty, or The Road. The coolest thing about The Road is the venue change in the middle. Many years ago I used that song to teach my late son’s elementary school class about echolocation. Jackson Browne is a killer songwriter but he doesn’t have Seeger’s voice.
Otis Dylan That album was recorded on the road, in hotel rooms, on the bus, in venues. In the case of The Road, the first half of the song was recorded in a hotel room and the second half in a venue, it may have been Meriwether Post Pavillion in Columbia, MD.

Such a great lyricist and story teller. One of the greatest lines ever written is in the Bob Seger song "Against the Wind", Seger fans already know what I'm gonna say, the line is "I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then". EVERY time I hear that line, I close eyes and shake my head not on purpose, it just kinda happens.
Absolutely right when you said "Seger fans already know what I'm gonna say." The funny thing is that Bob put that line in as a place saver, intending to replace it because he thought it sounded dumb and didn't make sense. His friends who he ran the song by convinced him to keep it in. Lucky for him, because that's the line that grabs you.
My favorite line from ANY song I ever heard. But I do know now what I didn't know then and even with the regret, I am better because I know.

Kent Zepick love that song. Seger let’s the song breathe too over a few bars. Slows it all down till it almost stops. Very evocative, reflective “with autumn closing in...”. Master story teller and songwriter/ musician.
Yes, they simply must do this song to get the proper exposure to Bob Seger. Bob Seger is a great choice for these guys that seem to have a lot of Boomer subscribers. Remember Seger was in his Thirties when this "breakthrough" album was released. The whole album is a masterpiece IMO. They could do a listen to the whole thing and that would be epic for us, would it not?

In 1975, on my 21st birthday a bunch of us went to an outdoor concert up in Seattle. There were a lot of acts, including Bachman Turner Overdrive and Little River Band. One of the bands couldn't make it because the singer was sick (Flash Cadillac). So at the last minute a completely unknown band replaced them - Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band! They knocked us out! I've been a fan ever since.
Grew up with Seger, among the many others you guys are reacting to. Used to sing this to my kids when rocking them to sleep. So fun to watch another generation dig it.

All his tunes are decent, with most in the “story teller” mode... his earlier work tended to be grittier. To hear Seger at the other end of the spectrum you definitely need “Hollywood Nights” or Rambling Gambling Man” & “Kathmandu”...

I even had this on metal concert man rest rooms. A guy stepping in, take a look at me an thinks he's in the womans rest room :) Guess I was just too pretty..
If you were growing up in the early to late 60's and had long hair it was more than a cliche. If you were in the wrong neighborhood it could get you in real trouble fast - or worse. I think the point he was making was 'playing the star' involved more than just 16 hour road trip, one night stands, and sweat pour out your body. It also involved other real dangers too. At least where I grew up. His statement about you always seem out numbered and you don't dare make a stand meant a lot to many of us that grew up during that era. For us, you had to watch your back, don't get caught alone. I didn't even live in the worst areas. I knew of areas much worse than mine, which I pretty much avoided as much as possible. They used standard bully tactics. The never missed an opportunity to push it and never seemed to be alone. There was always the leader. Sometime you could get out of it if you could take out the leader - fast. Been there, done that - when there was absolutely no other way.
These were no joking, cliche, matters where I grew up - many people took it very seriously. They just started the harassing with 'is that a lady or a man' before it got pushed further.

Bob Seger is from the area I grew up in, in Michigan. He was far from an overnight sensation. He toured with his band, who are also local musicians, and played everywhere he could for almost 20 FUCKING YEARS before he became well known. For all those years, he played like a star but wasn't.

I had completely forgotten about "Still the Same". One of his best. Chevrolet ruined "Like a Rock" for me. I can remember watching football games on Sunday and every other commercial was the one that played that song. I got sick of it.🤮

Growing up near Detroit, we were exposed to a lot of Seger. Much like Springsteen, he is the great Rock n Roll story teller.

Was lucky enough to make this concert in my home town of Detroit at Cobo Hall, downtown on the Detroit river. No sex ever left the lasting impression as that song live!! First time I seen Bob Seger was at “Notre Damn” high school on 8 Mile. They were known as the “Bob Seger System”. It cost 4 cans of soup to get in. Last school dance they ever played. They had just came out with “2 + 2 Is On My Mind”. Great song, and the rest is history!!!

There's a term used in stage acting, "topping ". Topping refers to, in essence, peaking too soon. If you hit your high note, anger, sadness, love, etc.then you can't top that in a later act. The idea is you build up to a climax instead of peaking prematurely. Bob Seeger seems to be aware of topping.

First of all I really enjoy your reaction to music videos and it is very obvious that you're both very knowledgeable when it come to music. When it comes to " Seger " he's not just a great story teller, he is a Fucking Legend in rock music. Your analogy is so spot on about " Turn the Page ", I have worked as a contract worker in the nuclear power industry for over 44 years and driven to almost everywhere across the U.S. on assignments. I know 16 + hours of straight driving feels like and just to get to the next job and do it over again. You guys keep doing the great job and I'll be checking in to see what's on your list.
