This movie was tough to watch even before I had daughters of my own. Now that I do, I've never been able to muster the courage to watch it again. This theme song alone is really hard to listen to, but it is for sure one of Ennio's best in my opinion. He sure knew how to invoke strong emotions with his music.
I don't think there is a more disturbing or harrowing movie about Vietnam out there. At least Oliver Stone, Michael Cimino and Francis Ford Coppola made films which gave you a sense of enjoyable male bonding and occasional action. De Palma prefers to portray the war as nothing less than a grim, ugly experience. This is one of the best movies ever made, and Morricone's score is haunting and moving.
@@afroartist1086 I’ve never seen Platoon, but this movie is very realistic - since it’s based on an actual story. I know they’ve dramatised it even more and have humanised the luitenant - I could be wrong about his rank. Yet, the fiction parts in this film are extremely plausible and not against science - it’s not like someone was superman in this movie. More realistic than this is nearly impossible, since making a documentary about it requires time travelling... And I’m not even getting started on the other aspects that make it an impossibility.
Amen to that casualties of war is the most disturbing.. platoon was emotional fmj and apocalypse now are awfully overrated.. I am sure you will agree with me
Ennio Morricone is definitely 1 in a million. I can't find a single theme song he's composed that I have disliked, he always manages to capture the soul of the movie in his themes.
There was a movie directed by Elio Petri that had a soundtrack by Morricone almost as annoying as the movie itself, so I agree with the second half But what gives... almost everything he touches is gold!

Ennio Morricone's best work was from the 1980s for sure! Like: -Casualties of War -Cinema Paradiso -The Untouchables -The Mission -Once Upon a Time in America
I love this movie, so powerful & realistic. I love how it puts these young guys into a moral quagmire & it becomes a struggle for survival & what's really right & wrong in a war zone. Sure everyone in the comfort of their own home says its fucked up but have you ever been in a situation like this where the boundaries of good & evil are so distorted & your confronted about what's really right or wrong where you need to make a life & death decision? War turns good people upside down. I love the ending when he sees the girl on the train trussle & has the flashback while you can hear echoes of the dead soldiers & vietnamese in the background of the score. It gives me chills & makes me think about what's really important in life.

This is one of the only war films that present the "bad or worse" scenario many people find themselves in while in the military when Erikson has a brief window to leave with the girl while the others are preparing an ambush, if he leaves he's a deserter; who would the Army believe him or the other members of his unit? If he passively resists the unit by leaving he's fucked, if he actively resisted he would've been killed. Damned if you do damned if you don't

Michael J Fox was brilliant in this. I never really rated him much but after seeing his performance in this movie my opinion of him chanced.
De palma cast Fox because he was a massive star at the time and basically got the movie made, I agree, his best performance.
He was vulnerable yet at the same time courageous for he did to testify against his fellow Soldiers for what they committed.
