I was a metal fan way back when.... Sabbath, Ozzy, Maiden etc. I moved to Okinawa Japan in '85 and someone handed me Ride The Lightning. I put it on the turntable, put on the good headphones....and after the harpsichord intro to Fight Fire with Fire, I was shocked and had to look at the stereo. What the fuck was that?!?!?! Life was never the same and to this day, I recall that moment, hearing Metallica for the 1st time, as if it were a mere week ago.
These guys were like 21 when this came out. To create something this insightful and amazing at that point in their lives as a thrash metal band is unreal.
Marcus Weaver James is an amazing story teller. Storytelling separates the good from the great. Best 4-pc band, I think, in the history of rock music. There are others who have done individual things better perhaps. But Metallica forced the world to pay attention through sheer tenacity, honesty, and creativity. Not 1 band even close.
well they were just kicked out of their manager's house for tearing it up, all their gear was stolen and james was considering suicide. all great music comes from true suffering. this is a suicide song.
Agree with The Blue Savior the studio version should be the introduction to almost all songs for the reasons given, then later try the live version to feel the passion and energy of the crowds and the joy of a band that truly loves what they do.
There are two songs and an album that I'd call the exceptions to that rule.... 'The Thing That Should Not Be', 'Harvester of Sorrow', and St. Anger. The first two move from good to frickin' awesome when played live... the studio versions of both are kind of flattened. St. Anger's studio album is just unsalvageable; BUT there are good songs on it and once they figured out how to play them live with some changes to structure and not having that ear-wrenching ringing unlocked snare drum... that's just the way to get to those songs, the live performances. Everything else, yeah... hit the studio version first, then grab a live performance to see the difference. Seattle '89 and Moscow '91 are fantastic sources for the early work.
I think that's true for most bands. Even Stevie Ray Vaughan. I wish he would've listened to the CD version of "One" the other day. The official video isn't live, but it has that stupid movie soundtrack so loud you can't hear the song.

Still, I'm reminded of the words from a Pink Floyd song: "The flames are all long gone, but the pain lingers on."

Very true. I loved watching them play next to the classical San Francisco Philharmonic, with accompanying parts written specifically for the orchestra to complement but not match the band. The mix of metal and classical was magical.

Sanitarium and Harvester Of Sorrow. They used to open every concert with Breadfan, followed by those two (my favorites, though I love Fade To Black, Puppets, and Justice).
My fav Metallica song of all. A lot of thier songs have deep meanings and this one is one of the best. A song about depression and suicide, whenever I used to get depressed and thought the world would be better off without me I would listen to this and cry. Listened to this song many many times over the years. First time I caught some of the Dave Mustaine influence. But he only wrote a couple of the other songs.
As a metal guitar player this music literally did change my life in 1984. No joke. And studio is usually the best but they're version from Germany September 1985 is incredible because you get to hear the awesome way the end it.
The first time I heard this I knew these guys were more than a run of the mill thrash metal band proved they were real musicians with a feel for their music
Quite possibly Metallica's finest song. Generally, I prefer their live stuff over the studio recordings, but it's definitely worth listening to the studio tracks first.
My man, you need to listen to the whole Metallica Catalog, it is quite amazing how great their music is and how much they write about religion, especially in their earlier music.
This was the song that first made me pick up a guitar. I switched to bass 6 months later and have been playing now for 35 years and this is where it all started....Good times..
@@dekto_ No, I don't agree with that, they used to be thrash, now they came back to their roots but they experimented and the 96s-2000s period was their best when it came to writing
It does my heart good to see a young person such as yourself being open minded to new experiences. I enjoy your reactions, especially “stank face” - which I never heard before and I just love it! 😊
I heard this song the first time with my friends. It hit me hard because I was feeling so low at the time and boy did this song resonate with me. Though it made me think and I realized that my life was so much more worth being around. Metallica saved my life and I have been a fan ever since.
The GOAT of all metal songs. Well my favorite anyways. But love your reactions and please do some mote Black Sabbath like their first ever track labeled "Black Sabbath" and "God is Dead" and "Planet Caravan". My three favorites by them. Trust me, you will not be dissapointed with these!
Speechless is the right word and I like it! The greatest time ever.. and today ?? Where is it ? Where is the energy in the music today ? It’s gone unfortunately
I really appreciate what you're doing. It pains me to imagine that era and genre of music would get swept over by the winds of time. I wish so bad, so often, that I could hear those songs again for the first time and take that ride into the unknown again. I happy seeing someone else hear it as new material again.
Been a Metallica fan since 1985 and they have put out a lot of great music, but in my humble opinion, this is still their best song. Great musically and lyrically insightful. Absolutely a masterpiece!
As the hunger for deep material grows. I recommend start a journey with Pink Floyd. React to these albums in full: Animals, Wish You Were Here, Dark Side Of The Moon, and The Wall. Enjoy the TRIP.
I heard this song 31 years ago on vinyl and I don't think music was ever the same for me again. Masterpiece.

Been sober almost 5 yrs now ,I listen to this song over and over in a hotel room thinking about just what this song about! Fueled with plenty of vodka and alot of drugs I was ready to end it!! If it wasn't for the Helping Up Mission in Baltimore Md I wouldn't be hear today!!! Please get help if you need it ,thiers people that really care believe me I know first hand!!!! 😇❤😇
If you watch anything live I would recommend watching them in 1991 Moscow. Supposedly they stopped counting after 500,000 people and the enter sand man video is wild af
This song saved many lives, I would listen to it on repeat at 13, music got me to see past the pain. I still come to this song when it gets too much.
My favorite Metallica song of all time. Studio cuts first time around.
I think this is the first Metallic song I ever heard and still after all these years one of my favorites.
Another awesome song by Metallica
They played this at my friend's funeral in 89. Hard for me to hear.
They’re incredible live, but studio is also always immaculate.
Listened to this song many many times over the years. First time I caught some of the Dave Mustaine influence. But he only wrote a couple of the other songs.
Every time I hear this, I go back to that moment in time in 1984🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
This was the last song played when KNAC went off the air. Sad day.
I love this guy. Quick and to the point. He's open to all types of music. Not judgmental at all. TH-cam needs more like him.
If you have an appreciation for lyrics...DISPOSABLE HEROES
YASSSSSSSSS! I just said that!!!
Oh hell yesss!
Yes!! Definitely listen to Disposable...deep as hell
U nailed It. And it's from , in my opinion, Metallica's best album ever. Ride is a amazing album, but Master is a masterpiece .
Love that we live in an age were brothers are appreciating Metallica. 10-20 years ago we wouldn’t see TH-cam videos like this. 👏 👏
Fun fact: Ride the Lightning is a Stephen King reference said by a character in The Stand who is about to be executed via electric chair.
As a metal guitar player this music literally did change my life in 1984. No joke. And studio is usually the best but they're version from Germany September 1985 is incredible because you get to hear the awesome way the end it.
I heard this album and never looked back.. They put Metal on the Map with this album. Thank you for all you do Sir...
Thanks🙏🏾
The first time I heard this I knew these guys were more than a run of the mill thrash metal band proved they were real musicians with a feel for their music
Quite possibly Metallica's finest song. Generally, I prefer their live stuff over the studio recordings, but it's definitely worth listening to the studio tracks first.
Watching you young brothers and sisters react to music I haven't heard in 20 years brings tears like nothing else can
My man, you need to listen to the whole Metallica Catalog, it is quite amazing how great their music is and how much they write about religion, especially in their earlier music.
This was the song that first made me pick up a guitar. I switched to bass 6 months later and have been playing now for 35 years and this is where it all started....Good times..
Thank You Sir. But let's get greedy and ask for Fight Fire With Fire
One of my favorites
@Lance Shepler No YOU suck, Metallica evolved, they never sucked.
@@kowxley1793 downgraded definitely, they used to be better.
@@dekto_ No, I don't agree with that, they used to be thrash, now they came back to their roots but they experimented and the 96s-2000s period was their best when it came to writing
@@kowxley1793 Still, I'd prefer the thrash days.
It does my heart good to see a young person such as yourself being open minded to new experiences. I enjoy your reactions, especially “stank face” - which I never heard before and I just love it! 😊
Excited you are reviewing Metallica! This is my favorite song from the band. They are underrated as lyricists, in my opinion.
I like Panteras take on “Planet Caravan,” too.
Your expression at the end when the solo kept on going was priceless
😃👍
when i read the comments and it should be metallica agree with sanatarium/welcome home 😆
Speechless is the right word and I like it!
The greatest time ever.. and today ?? Where is it ? Where is the energy in the music today ? It’s gone unfortunately
Operation Mindcrime by Queenshryche... interesting thing about this album, it tells a story from beginning to end. IMO the whole album is classic
I got to go to BOTH concerts that Livecrime was recorded at ....
My fav Metallica song .. its just so deep... and it hella rocks.
Now I will just say goodbye..
goodbye.
Jamel, you want deep, you have to hit disposable hero's
I really appreciate what you're doing. It pains me to imagine that era and genre of music would get swept over by the winds of time.
I wish so bad, so often, that I could hear those songs again for the first time and take that ride into the unknown again.
I happy seeing someone else hear it as new material again.
Always do the studio version first. It's usually always the better quality. Then you'll know what you're listening to when u hear it live.
The symphonic concert of Metallica!! Listen this concert... They blow your mind. Peace from Perú
Check out "The day that never comes " by Metallica , that's an intense one . Love Your work Man ! 😃
