Well, to be honest, growing up in that era, remembering seeing Master of Puppets coming out, seeing a record at a friend's house that I now know it was Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, also the cover of King Crimson's Epitaph, we could not know then what kind of diamonds we had on our hands. Yes... this song if essentially a suicide note set to music. However, this song helped me a great deal when I was younger. Despite the pain and confusion I felt, I let me know I was not alone and someone understood. It expressed for me thoughts and feelings that I myself could not put into words. It did not make me want to kill myself. It, in fact, made me feel better.
I couldn't agree more Brother! I experienced pretty damn horrible physical and sexual abuse by my classmates back when I was a kid, and 'cause of that, became awkward, anti-social and depressed as a teen. Honestly, I really considered killing myself at times, but then, I discovered Metallica and in particular, Fade To Black. For some weird reason, it uplifted me and always made me wanna live a little more. This song is an absolute gem!

I’ve said this many times, but the great thing about the message in this song is that it makes you realise that you’re not the only one that has these dark feelings. A depressed listener would likely take comfort in the fact that they’re not the only person in that position, and ultimately nobody in Metallica killed themselves, they moved on and have lived great lives. Yeah momentum can be strained but you could also argue that focus is lost if you comment while the track continues. You lose your footing in the song and moments fly right over your head. Also - pausing prevents copyright issues. So just pause when you got more than a few words to say or need to articulate something. Then dial the track back 10 seconds so you can hop back on that momentum right where you left off.
I agree with you. Pausing kills the momentum and most reactors pause it at the wrong time. I don't pause my videos. I don't care about blocking copyright. The money should go to the artist anyway.

There was some pretty serious backlash thrown at the band over this song. Parents tried to blame Metallica for the suicides of their children. The song isn't a call for suicide, it's a description of the allure of death.

I once drove my car and played this, tears up when I listened to the solo. IT'S THRILLING AND SAD AT THE SAME TIME!
Discovered Ride the Lightning at 14. It changed the way I thought about, listened to and consumed music. It remains a masterpiece of the genre and Fade to Black still moves me in my late thirties.
You got it. You totally got it. Depressing for sure, but so beautiful. I don't think my reaction was much different than yours when I first heard it way too many years ago...Another fantastic, thoughtful reaction!
This particular song "carried me thru" some very troubled, and very dark times in my life. Personally, I believe it to be the best song that's ever been written. Thank you, Metallica.. for letting so many of us know, we weren't alone. And thanks to TNT for recognising a masterpiece.
The Band had all their Equipment stolen including James's favorite Marshall amp head. They were not rich at the time and instruments are super expensive. James wrote the song basically because he was so depressed from loosing their livelihood at the time. It has definitely helped me through some tough times. Metallica has their faults but I will always be indebted to them for getting my through the worst parts of my life. I always use those first five albums for therapy when things go south.

If you’re really suicidal, listening to a well-written suicidally-themed song will rescue you. It will help you rescue you. Many times when you’re depressed enough to want to self-destruct, it’s due to feeling extremely lonely, when you feel there’s no one to identify or link yourself with. But when you hear someone else’s song that illustrates so well what you’re feeling but can’t seem to express to others...suddenly the singer is someone you can identify with and now you’re a bit less lonely. Plus this song is emphatic so you can sing along or move along to the music and blow off your depression steam.
This song has saved so many more lives than taken. The only thing I know is that a few people wrote a note with lyrics from this song, BUT... Listening to this kind of music makes people who are depressed realize they aren't alone which can help them mentally.
You have to have a drink to listen to this song bro!!! Past 30 years and I still am just like wow!! But sad to what’s the message is. It’s up lifting towards the end!!!!!! I’m sooo loving your true emotion and understanding this song. The expression on your face is priceless.... you get it!!!!!!
Again i enjoyed your honest reaction. You rock just sayin. As a teen listening to this feeling down and not getting why ( cause of the teen angst or whatnot) i felt down this song was something to relate to and was a way to let out some of the emotions i felt safely without violence or whatnot. This song was probably step 1 in realizing music was great for letting out overwhelming emotions . I feel i didn't explain myself well but this song helped me in a dark time as i can tell by reading other comments it helped many others as well. Now as i am older i have many songs that help but this one was the very first. Truly in my opinion a timeless masterpiece.
Even though this song is about suicide, it saved a lot of lives including mine. Because it allowed me to almost experience suicide without actually doing it. Also the music is almost the opposite of the lyrics, it is very upbeat and helped me get it out of my system. But that's just me.
@@whocares6206 I would like to think those who pass away are still here in one way or another. At the very least, he lives on through people who remember them..
There is a lot of old school hard rock and heavy metal that (especially in comparison to today's music) are, or should be, considered pieces of art. I mean, I know this is the music I grew up on, so, one has to logically and objectively assume that I would have a biased perspective..... But, as we are now seeing....30 and 40 plus years later.....how people in reaction videos much like your own are expressing similar thoughts, ideas and emotions when it comes to this music.... This music truly is one of a kind and should most definitely be considered art.....
No, see, people who have depression on this level often can't connect it with the outside world... it doesn't have a voice. The mind has no concept of how to get it into words, to purge it. This song is a voice. It's a conduit, and wait to see how many commenter tell you this song *saved their lives* because it opens the valve that drains all that mental pressure for someone who's bottled up and ready to explode in the most dire, self-damaging ways. EDIT: VERY IMPORTANT: James was never a drug user, his demon is alcohol.... of the 'vodka with breakfast' variety.
I was in high school and really upset one day, I played this song literally 14 times in a row and it uplifted me and made me NOT want to die cause others knew my pain.
Somehow I only managed to discover this song about a month ago. The more I listen to it, the more I love it. It's just amazing. I'm a huge fan of "One", but this song is now a serious contender for my favorite Metallica song.
This was one of those songs where Kirk Hammet(Lead guitarist) randomly came up with a part(the acoustic intro) and it snowballed from there. It came about when a bunch of their equipment got stolen, this was during the time when they were basically dirt poor.
This song was written when they were in their late-teens to early twenties and they were on the road and had all of their equipment stolen. It’s crazy to think they were that young and writing/playing such masterpieces. I play guitar because of Metallica and I must admit, I was so focused on the guitar and heavy riffs that I glossed over the lyrics of many of their songs. I mean, I knew enough to know the chorus or pick out most words here and there and half-ass sing along, but when you actually read the words, reflect on them and understand them in their totality...it made me appreciate James and his writing ability that much more.
decades ago ,when listening to this song, saying it all out loud, feeling it , sharing it, letting it out singing it , jamming my BUTT OFF to the music....banging my head, playing air guitar, and air drumming , helped release those emotions... made me FEEL as if SOMEONE KNEW HOW , HOW , HOW I was FEELING TOO .... HELPED ME HANG ON AND GET THRU LIFE AT THAT TIME.... ITS THERAPY TO SING THIS SONG .... ACTUALLY . .....LOVE THIS SONG!!!!
This song represents hope to me. It gives you pause... a moment to reflect and a moment to realize that you're not alone and that there's more out there. There is an end and that end isn't the end, but a new beginning. This is a song of transition and realization.
I heard this song so often and it still makes me sad. I mean, no other song gives me so many feelings in one song. This is why fade to black ist my favourite song and metallica my favourite band. Greetings from germany.
I have to admit that thier very first music seemed to lack meaning It seems to me that as they matured they started making meaningful music I would suggest the song one, but as you already stated in your video you know that one One that comes to mind after that is welcome home sanitarium And after that is mama said
I like this. Alot of white people love R&B and rap. Its good to see it go the other way. Culturally music can make people understand each other better. In these crazy days we all need to realize that while we have cultural differences, we are more alike than we might realize. That is something music can do.
For me, in my darkest time, this song was kindof like Ritalin for me. Reverse reactions. Like giving speed to a hyper kid.. Best to hear without the lyrics for 1st timers, to avoid being bummed out.
Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow If I Can't Even Smile Today? I spent 6 months in a psychiatric hospital after a failed suicide attempt in the 90s and I listened to a lot of Suicidal Tendencies.
It has to be the album version though, not the official video, because the official video cuts about 3 minutes of important lyrics. Suicidal Tendencies have saved my life many a time. I feel ya, bro.
This is one of my favorite songs. Not a fav metal song, no a fav Metallica song, no. This is one of my fav songs of all time. About the suicide, like you said, the song fades away (to black, to nothing, to silence, "there is nothing more for me") and almost wouldn't need lyrics to transmit all those sad depressing feelings, thats true. But I think they didn't want this piece of music to have enough space to play around with vague words like "sad feeling, loneliness, depression, emotional, etc"... in fact the lyrics are so "in your face" that it's even hard to avoid speaking the words of what it's going on here. This is IMHO, one of the best songs describing the last 5 minutes of someone that already took the decision to commit suicide, there is no turning back. For me this isn't about poetry, melody or "the beauty of death" in some romantic perspective. It's about the lost of everything that you could hang on to to go on living... there is nothing left. The chords, the melody, everything is meant to send you down while absorbing the "explanation" of what's happening (lyrics) and the chords just follow to the point of agony and fades to black. It's a small masterpiece of my favorite Metallica album "Ride The Lightening"
These are the kinds of songs that makes Metallica so great and why they still draw massive crowds in concerts. The thing about them they are not afraid to try different things. Sometimes it fails in quality (St Anger Album) But Hardwired there last album was back more the style most fans love. It is a sad song but the music play is just so good.
i always felt that the ending instrumental was the representation of the final anxieties you might feel as you are taking your life, the build-up, the execution, then as you start to drift, your are finally escaping as you fade to black, the unconsciousness of death....
I see it just the way you do. But the feeling of desparation towards the end always makes me think: Fuck you, despair! NOT with me! So this song has a positive influence on my dark moods ...
That's the way most look at it but i don't...I think of the anxiety building but it fades, as everything does. I mean, we, and Metallica, are still alive by the end of the song, so i take it as a positive that the bad emotions fade. Just as the highs do...
Many people have said this song has helped them out of a bad place. People disregard this song and other songs in this vain as depressing. But this can give the people who have the feelings of depression or suicidal thoughts, something to relate to knowing others have been through and are going through. Moreover fade to black was wrote in 1984 a time when mental health problems were heavily scorned upon.
This song spoke to me as a depressed teenager because I was having those exact feelings. Just hearing someone express that they have felt the same way and knowing they understood plus the fact they were older than me and kicking ass all over the world as a band gave me hope that I could come out the other side. I’m now in my forties and Metallica helped me get there. They made me feel like I wasn’t alone.
You can empathize with a song and the songwriter without being consumed by those emotions within the song. I heard someone say recently that the arts teach humanity more than anything else. I think this is so true. It's better to channel emotions and feelings, talk about them instead of acting like they don't exists. Everything can't be positive and happy all the time, like life.
This song got me through the death of my step dad, I relate it to coming to terms with the loss of a loved one and wondering what the point of carrying on is. My favourite Metallica song by far
This song is tough for me. Had a friend tell me as a teen he wanted this at his funeral. He joined the army Sept. 12, 2001. He was in for over a decade and only got out because of the way the Gov treated the enlisted. He collapsed in a store with his family, dead before he hit the floor, a week before he turned 42. I tip a drink everytime I hear it in honor. (Bwah ha hahaha haaaaaa. Glad you left in the deleted scenes.)
You make my favorite reaction videos. Just wanted to say so. This music is some of my favorite ever. I love many different kinds of music and metal always made me feel better somehow.
This song is James hetfield’s favourite song of Metallica. I think this song is a wholesome collaboration of all the members in the band. My favourite from their catalog.
One of my top 5 favorites by them. When Kirk's solo comes in at the end...blissful! It reminds me of David Gilmore coming in with his sweet guitar in Comfortably Numb. Orgasmic 😁
My thoughts on the feeling behind the song is exactly like the agony I felt when my son died at age 11, six years ago in a tragic accident. I felt that there was no reason to go on and the lyrics perfectly reflect the depression I went through. Luckily, I had his brother. He is my reason for going on. I've been listening to Metallica since their first album and never saw them in person until last year. Ironically, my now 16 year old son paid for, and took me to the Milwaukee, WI concert. I never played a lot of Metallica for him, but it is his favorite band without my influence. To me, this song is the feeling of deep depression and the thoughts that one feels when things feel hopeless and you wish it would just be easier not to go on. My advise to all those who feel depressed or hopeless... Please talk to someone, anyone, friend, family, or complete stranger about what you're feeling! I guarantee that the person you talk to has gone through a similar experience. We've all been in the same boat at least once in our lives. Props go to James for seeking rehab again! The Metallica family stands behind you!

This song is an absolute masterpiece, and arguably one of the top 5 metal songs of all time. I still feel the same emotions and pain when I hear the song as I did when I first heard it over 30 years ago.
Really good job. I'm new to these reaction vids about a week ago and have been gobbling up the ones featuring my favorite bands. I just found this channel and am impressed. Your reactions are the most thoughtful and easily the best I've found yet.
Fade to Black is a classic.
Actually one of the first songs that I heard by Metellica! 🤘👊
This song means alot to many people also me it hits you deeply
This song man, this song...
I used to be new to metal, listened to SOAD then Metallica and some bands now I'm turning into metalhead, but this song man this song,, this solo is like someone who's praying or looking for help. I once drove my car and played this, tears up when I listened to the solo. IT'S THRILLING AND SAD AT THE SAME TIME!
Metallica is the shit.
At the time this came out I totally identified. Still such a fan at 65.
Fade to Black is an amazing song and when depressed it helps lift me somehow. I think I first heard it in about 1985 when I was 11!
I love how MetallicA softly attacks you then Moves in for the kill..Rawk!On
This song is just so beautiful. I can just listen to this for hours
This particular song "carried me thru" some very troubled, and very dark times in my life.
Personally, I believe it to be the best song that's ever been written. Thank you, Metallica.. for letting so many of us know, we weren't alone. And thanks to TNT for recognising a masterpiece.
Haunting sound, sad lyrics, and the arrangement and change in this song is masterclass, it is a masterpiece
Definitely their best album .
It's like a Metal lullaby... You have no idea just how accurate that statement was.
To live is to die is a great example of an I instrumental you can understand the meaning and feel the song without words. I'd also like to say thanks for actually giving a reaction and not just watching a video and asking for a like and saying bye. You got a new subscriber
Yea, I watch other reactors do that and it pisses me off. This song is a legit masterpiece and needs to be discussed.
Nice work, yeah, feel the same, this song is art and very powerful!
This song really gives me the shivers
Maybe me too. Maybe that's why I survived.
Glad to see you're both still here to share your thoughts with us. My cousin's son committed suicide just one week ago. He was 15. RIP
@@whocares6206 I would like to think those who pass away are still here in one way or another. At the very least, he lives on through people who remember them..
Hey man just wanted to say I appreciate your reaction to this, it's one of the most genuine reactions I've seen to any song....awesome!
It is hauntingly beautiful. It is a epic masterpiece.
Well said brother
Always been my favorite by Metallica. Probably because it helped me through some dark suicidal times myself. Love the vids man 🤘
No, see, people who have depression on this level often can't connect it with the outside world... it doesn't have a voice.
This song saved my life
This is my take exactly. I find this is true with a lot of metal.
This cocaine makes me feel like I’m on this song
Yes!
I was in high school and really upset one day, I played this song literally 14 times in a row and it uplifted me and made me NOT want to die cause others knew my pain.
Great song analysis.
Is why it's called 'Fade to Black' ...life's fading, life is ending, etc.
Not necessarily suicide, just something inevitable.
Good reaction awesome song so good to see you liked this song you rock dude 🤟
decades ago ,when listening to this song, saying it all out loud, feeling it , sharing it, letting it out singing it , jamming my BUTT OFF to the music....banging my head, playing air guitar, and air drumming , helped release those emotions... made me FEEL as if SOMEONE KNEW HOW , HOW , HOW I was FEELING TOO ....
Their songs are like poems
As a teen I was very depressed and suicidal. this song and a few others actually gave me something to have of my own and allowed me to feel something.
I heard this song so often and it still makes me sad. I mean, no other song gives me so many feelings in one song. This is why fade to black ist my favourite song and metallica my favourite band. Greetings from germany.
So happy to see other metallica fans out there that really get them
Thier music is so real, powerfull, and about real life
Exactly! The lyrics In these songs are so fuckn real. I love looking deeper into their music
I have to admit that thier very first music seemed to lack meaning
It seems to me that as they matured they started making meaningful music
I would suggest the song one, but as you already stated in your video you know that one
One that comes to mind after that is welcome home sanitarium
And after that is mama said
I like this. Alot of white people love R&B and rap. Its good to see it go the other way. Culturally music can make people understand each other better. In these crazy days we all need to realize that while we have cultural differences, we are more alike than we might realize. That is something music can do.
Props for nor editing your own words. Your initial reaction was true, and that was what they wanted you to feel.
For me, in my darkest time, this song was kindof like Ritalin for me.
Reverse reactions. Like giving speed to a hyper kid..
Best to hear without the lyrics for 1st timers, to avoid being bummed out.
The bass is there in the beginning, it's underneath filling everything out.
The outro is just so epic. My favourite outro ever
Sooooo freakin good.
Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow If I Can't Even Smile Today?
I spent 6 months in a psychiatric hospital after a failed suicide attempt in the 90s and I listened to a lot of Suicidal Tendencies.
Hope you doing well by now!
It has to be the album version though, not the official video, because the official video cuts about 3 minutes of important lyrics.
Suicidal Tendencies have saved my life many a time. I feel ya, bro.
@@dasmeatloaf7670 There's also the 'Heavy Emotional Version' version. ;)
This is why Metallica is my favorite band of all time
As someone who is often depressed and thinks the end can not come fast enough, this song helps to work through that and get back to reality
This song makes me find comfort in the end
This song should be played at my funeral.
i always felt that the ending instrumental was the representation of the final anxieties you might feel as you are taking your life, the build-up, the execution, then as you start to drift, your are finally escaping as you fade to black, the unconsciousness of death....
The best Metallica song ever ! FIGHT ME!! Metallica has always been about the talent of each member, including James' voice.
Metallica - Bleeding me.
The most beautiful song
Best use of a twelve string for an opening riff ever. Such beautiful depth, with a feminine touch added, yearning......
Dean
Wales, UK.
That's why they used to be called AlcoholicA lol. But I agree, the entire outro to this song is one of my all time favorites. That solo? DOPE.
Glad to see you gave this a chance...it is such a deep thought provoking song im glad to see you could feel it!
Hell yeah! Beer is good thrash compliments!
I cant listen this without thinking about the stage accident James had with the pyrotechnics.
Wow bro, that’s deep. Thanks for sharing your story. I love your name btw. Sooo dope.
Maybe gone but not forgotten..
OpThomasPrime wow, a day after 9/11 respect to him
They wrote this song in 1984 after all their equipment stolen from them
Metallica the whole band collaborated it. By the way you killed it brother
Yes, shout out to Budweiser!
I also dig the plastic bottles..
my man drinking a beer listening to metallica.doin exactly the same thing ,cheers!
Good call to keep the commentary. That's the sort of thing that makes TH-cam videos special. Real people, real words.
One of my top 5 favorites by them. When Kirk's solo comes in at the end...blissful! It reminds me of David Gilmore coming in with his sweet guitar in Comfortably Numb. Orgasmic 😁
Metallica - Disposable Heroes
Their only song that can 1-up FTB in my opinion... transition clinic as well.
Amen & God bless.
You nailed . they nailed it . long story it made me feel i wasnt the only one to feel that way , so it empowered me. im still here
That was a great intelligent analysis of the song. Thank you!
Good for you to keep your initial reaction. I like honesty in reaction videos.
