I'm 39 years old. Childhood diabetes wasn't even a thing when i was a kid, it was SO RARE. Diabetes was an "old person" illness. My grandmother had it. My son who is in 6th grade has 2 classmates with it. It's no shocking secret why it's happening. Mass production of processed and reprocessed foods in the US that are saturated with sugar (AND salt btw which is a whole other problem) is what's going on. It's another way to keep the people of this country sick and needing medicine after medicine after doctor and doctor.

I am 61, and childhood diabetes was a thing when I was a kid. My best friend had it. There were only 15 or 16 kids in our entire class. So, it had to be a thing when you were a kid too, even if you weren't aware of it.

Childhood diabetes has always been around but the diagnoses was poor. If not diagnosed appropriately the kids would die of fits, heart and organ failure, no two kids have the same pattern including stunted growth. In America quality of life depends on health cover.

Most of the “food” on our grocery store shelves are NOT allowed in other countries, they have much healthier versions of the same thing in those countries made by the same major companies, but you see they are held accountable in all the other countries, not like here where corporations have our government in their pockets.

Indeed so that's why the whole "personal responsibility" excuse won't fly here.
The government has to step up to give healthier food to it's people. Through a combination of taxes for unhealthy foods and subsidies for healthy foods, more money for school lunches, a program to eliminate food deserts and so on.
European countries actually have successful programs to this effect. Denmark has a complicated but effective system of taxes and subsidies, Finland has excellent school lunches and the Netherlands has food deserts be illegal.

  • @TT-ue6xx

The only way to restrict the cost of pharmaceutical drugs is with a universal healthcare system, like most other countries (and all 1st world countries).
Also like other countries we need more help for everyone with chronic illness regardless of income. The federal poverty level used to qualify for benefits is too low (13k for 1 person, 27k for a family of 4). Everyone with a chronic illness should have access to help.
Our food in the US is concentrated under monopolies. People and children will eat what they can afford, which is generally processed foods. And no, things like beans and rice are super high in carbs and are bad for diabetics even if affordable. We need to lower the price of healthy foods and subsidize family farms instead of big ag. A ban on advertising is a good idea but is a band aid to bigger issues. Also SNAP restrictions mean nothing when the cost of food is way too high.
I was disappointed to see that no one said anything about Type 1 being an autoimmune disease and that diet has nothing to do with someone becoming a T1D. (I see they kind of address this towards the end of this of the video). And of course a doctor is doing well getting older with T1D as he has the money for the best care. Health shouldn't be pay to play.
Patients also need to be advised that Ozempic can cause severe stomach issues especially if they already have existing stomach issues from diabetes. And when off these meds many gain the weight back.
As someone with a T1D loved one thank you Senator Sanders and Cassidy for having a discussion about this.

As a type 1 diabetic, I know to always check the nutritional values, and I know exactly what to look at, but I hear time and time again people who obsess over sugar, and don't realize, sugar is just a singled out, one form of simple carbohydrate. That is to say, a product that says, no sugar, no added sugar, sugar free, zero net sugars etc etc, can potentially have as much carbs, even fast acting sugar in it, as long as it is not sucrose...

14:36, for those that don't know about CGM's they are distinctly not affordable. They are not even new - there's more buzz about them now and more awareness, but we've been using them for 10 years or more. Sure they are helpful, and i wouldnt treat my T1D without it, but they are distinctly not affordable. Same goes for insulin pump supplies. I haven't done the complete math, but my estimate is at least 20-25% of my income goes directly into treating my T1D at the time of writing. This includes the supplies, the insurance, specialist visits, etc.

I do not know of anyone in Congress that has the courage to tackle these problems through legislation other than Bernie. However, I also think that the decrease in sports in schools dueto fear of being sued when a child might be injured, has stopped sports. Kids focus on computer games rather than sports games which also help build team spirit and friendship and physical health. I also think that health classes need to address nutrition in ways that will help boys and girls learn about good tasting and healthy foods, and schools need to provide these types of foods to students and NOT unhealthy but cheap food. Many obese kids have obese parents so that makes it harder. But more stomach operations and pills and medical costs are not the answer. In my opinion. Not having a car helps, walking and simple lifestyle changes in my opinion are the miracle drug.

I'm a grad student in America, and I think Americans are "numb" to sugar. So far, I have tried a few desserts that aren't EXTREMELY sweet. People here don't notice how sweet their food is. I think they're so used to that level of sugar that they just don't realize it. I feel bad that I have to reject many deliciously looking desserts they've offered me. I don't want to look rude, but honest to God, it's too MUCH! They should start putting colored labels on products that indicate the level of fat, salt, and sugar. I saw this system in Ecuador.

Some of the medications for other things such as Statins to reduce cholesterol, can also lead to Diabetes, so it's not just food, but inclusive of medications should also be under investigation. 1/2 hour recess for kids in the North is not enough time for moving the body when it takes a good part of prep time to just get dressed appropriately for the weather as well as hurrying through lunch period so they can make it outside for the beginning of recess. We need to have more time to do things at a calmer speed many times in our days.

It's important to remember that the US has the highest healthcare costs per person in the entire world. Higher even than countries that have a higher cost of living in general like Norway and Switzerland.
While the majority of that is due to price gauging from big pharma and the insurance companies the low food standards don't help either.

Yay and they came out with a roast beef sandwich. Yay so that would. Be amazing if we could get rid of all the fat food, fast food industry and also in zoos amusement parks like have healthy options and don’t overprice everything you know I mean Costco yeah they recently except food stamps but for Sam’s doesn’t cover a whole lot of stuff I mean for real it’s crazy I don’t get it

They lowered the guidelines ..Under the new guidelines,2 the threshold fasting plasma glucose level for the diagnosis of diabetes has been lowered from 140 mg per dL (7.8 mmol per L) to 126 mg per dL (7.0 mmol per L). Screening is recommended every three years, beginning at age 45 (or earlier in high-risk groups)...One reason so many have been diagnosed with Diabetes.

I think in my personal opinion for Costco and Sam’s Club to keep his customers where they’re lowering wage or disability, or even corporate or whatever they need to give everybody a Costco membership. It shouldn’t depend on what your credit score is what your job is whatever they should have a Costco membership for everybody and I’m not talking about the workers. I’m talking about allowing people like me to have a Costco membership brother than rely on food stamps. I’m honestly I don’t like food stamps I never have. because it eliminates my choices of food and where I can get food, I would really like is Sam’s Club and Costco had memberships to everybody. Even food stamp. People should have a membership at Costco credit card why they shouldn’t have to rely on food stamps especially one talk about children you know what the WIC program doesn’t cover diapers Mason or you wanna put these people in jail this is wrong. This is very wrong I mean seriously Costco and Sam’s Club they should give memberships to everybody don’t matter who it is. It doesn’t matter what your job is hard for you don’t work no more whatever they need to stop overpricing everything I mean seriously it’s really really crazy it’s not OK I mean let’s create some more programs like movers and shakers, and not just for people with disability, but people would nondisability too. I mean gym memberships should not just be for the wealthy weight loss program. Slight weight watchers, and medical weight loss is not just for the wealthy and should be for everybody. and I think instead of doing bypass bariatric surgery there should be a laser surgery for weight loss especially even if you’re not super obese like 500, 600 pounds seriously it should be for everybody like I mean laser weight loss you know like to take in your hips and all that like this is insane and by the way, I’ve never smoke cigarettes in my whole entire life and don’t want to. I’m not into smoking I not an alcoholic freak.
