The Global Junk Food Conspiracy | Bringing Fat & Sugar to the Developing World: Obesity Documentary

  • In Europe, food manufacturers have signed up to ‘responsibility pledges’, promising no added sugar, preservatives, artificial colours or flavours and not to target children. So why are they using tactics banned in the West in the developing world? There, they have created ultra-low-cost products with higher levels of salt, sugar and saturated fats. Filmed in Brazil, India and France, we investigate the new tactics of brands like Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Domino’s Pizza.
    This documentary was produced by Babel Press and directed by CAMILLE LE POMELLEC. It was first released in 2016.

    I am from India, and I had once consumed such junk from KFC and subway etc. But now have stopped completely. If my daughter wants a pizza, I just make one at home with fresh ingredients. I also am teaching her the difference between healthy and unhealthy food. The next generation can be saved if parents don't give in to the junk food temptation.

Even if you're busy you can refrigerate the dough for three days . Also , mostly men living alone order food everyday because most Indians only teach their daughters how to cook and clean , they completely forget that in the 21st century boys don't get married at eighteen and therefore they need to learn how to look after themselves .

    The most unbeliveble thing is that Junk food is very expensive in Brazil. Mcdonalds is asburdley expensive, like a meal for two ppl is 6% of the minimum wage here and most ppl don even get the minimum wage, Burguer king and even Pizza Hutt are almost luxury brands for mosts Brazilians so the fact the we, as Brazilians, still buy this brands makes me belive that its pure manipulation of media.

    • @BoothTheGrey
      @BoothTheGrey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      More numbers would be nice. Here in Germany ONE standard meal at McDonalds costs about the minimum wage - both are about 9 Euro.
      So... TWO meals for the Minimum wage seems not "absurdley" expensive.
      But more important: How expensive/cheap are other restaurant meals?
      Are they so much cheaper? A pizza at a small pizza restaurant always was cheaper here in germany than a MacDonalds meal... since the 80s.

    • @Mentesestoicas_
      @Mentesestoicas_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@BoothTheGrey You dont get it, its not minium wage by hours is 6% of the entire minimum wage per month haha. A standard Meal is 40 reais and for a couple is 60 reais. Our miminum wage is 1.100 reais, so about 6% of the minimum wage. A normal plate of food in a "all you can eat" here is about 20 reais. Pizza Hutt here can go for 80 reais but theres some options for 40/30.

    • @Mentesestoicas_
      @Mentesestoicas_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      About the Pizzas: A regular pizza on a restaurant is about 30/40 reais. But you can go to a very nice "rodizio" (i dont know the translation) and pay like 55 reais and many waiters with many different pizzas will pass you offering many different types of pizzas until you explode. But still 5% of the general minium wage per month so is acctualy very expensive cause 75% of the population dont even get the minium wage.

    • @BoothTheGrey
      @BoothTheGrey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Mentesestoicas_ uh - I see - the reais is about one sixth of the euro. So 1.100 reais are about 200 Euro.
      The price 40/60 reais is more what you find over here in europe if you just adjust the currency. I understand now why you think the price for lower income group is too high.
      Maybe... MacDonalds aims more the mid/top middle class or even the upper class? Which is a bit weird cause this is supposed to be cheaper fast food.
      They dont do this here in europe and never did this. Hmmm... who knows what their master plan is.
      Probably... it has to do with making as much money as possible ;)
      Thanks for the little insight into brazils income dispersion. Yeah - its a shame how the normal people are pushed down with their income. Especially the european/american corporations could do SO MUCH to work together with the people for higher wages in countries where to many people get to little money. But they dont. The opposite is true. They are part of the peoblem.
      We in europe and at other places had the luck to have strong unions while the employers were much weaker - so the worker could fight for much better situations and even some politic parties supported that - this is decades ago. Today this seems to be a story from a weird fantasy world. Even in europa they lowered the income for the lower income groups in the last 20 years. In germany we created the biggest low income group in europe and we... well... you can say we almost "stole" many jobs from other countries in the south europe where income but also infrastructure prices a usually lower than in middle or north europe.
      All of this "working marketplace" is a world wide mess in "normal" jobs.

      It is apparent your understanding about weight loss, exercise and nutrition is limited. Weight loss is 80 % about nutrition, diet and lifestyle and only 20 % about exercise. I am 6 feet and weighed 145 Kg (320 lbs) in 2015 and at that time I was walking for 10 Kms in a day, going to gym for 10 hours per week but still there was no result.
      Then I changed my approach, approached this in more scientific manner. Had get metabolism tested, every 3 months Hba1c tests, monitoring nutrition. I am 75 Kg now with lot of lean muscle. Exercise helps me retain muscle and control metabolism but main key is nutrition. From last 6 years, I have not touched wheat, rice, sugar, cold drinks, ice cream, fresh fruit juice (as its all sugar), sweets or any sort of fried food. The only time I had 2 piece of dessert was in 2022 when my brother was getting married. I work out 15 hours a week (3 hours, 5 days per week) that includes 15 Km (10 miles) of running, and rest all strength training and HIIT. I cook my food everyday, which is free from all sugar/oil that I mentioned above. I have not eaten any sort of outside food from last 6 years.
      Not everyone can have this level of commitment. So the end goal is to loose weight and have healthy life. If someone achieves this by surgery, its still good. I know few people who lost their weight with surgery, and they are living a happy life now. And surgery is no magical wand either, it is just a tool. My brother had that surgery in 2012, when he was just 15 and had metabolic disorder. Doctor had given him 3 months to live, but with surgery his life was protected and now he lives a healthy life. But he has to follow strict diet to keep off the weight.

    Healthy natural fats are essential for maintaining good health, while drinking refined sugar with high % unbuffered fructose, not only causes non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, but leads to chronic inflammation, suppressed immunity, etc. etc.

    These fast food companies know the full extent of the damage these foods cause. They prey on our gullibility, thinking that "its not that bad". Teach your kids or you are just as guilty as them!!

    Unfortunately the only thing that will put a stop to this is if the families say NO, and the family learns how to cook delicious, healthy meals at home. It helps if you don't have a TV set or anything else that can advertise this stuff. I follow a youtuber in the Netherlands and am shocked by how many fast food restaurants I saw there. I counted 2 KFC's, 5 McDonalds, and 1 Burger King, probably all in Amsterdam alone.

    wow! brilliant doccie, thank you!! kids follow as parents do, as a kid my parents lived healthy and ate healthily and it left us kids to love healthier foods. I really question if fast foods like mc donalds should even be allowed to 'feed the nation' if even mould is allergic to their burgers, as a burger left for a week remains as is! not hating of junk food industry, just why is this not better controlled. are our governments so busy with saving our countries that these crimes are simply ignored, or is their major earnings for goverments in is allowing this. I ask

    I’m so thankful my parents only took us to Mc like once in a blue moon or so…it didn’t have that much of a culture in our post-szoviet union country in the early 2000’s to go out and eat junk often. Now as an adult I only eat it very rarely

    I'm from Brazil and work as a paralegal. Funny enough Brazil has one of the best consumers law in the world, and it veemently prohibits advertising for children. Those who promote products and services for children have to pay some very heavy fines. Notice how the guy at 9:07 corrects himself from saying the target audience is children to teenagers? Unfortunetly big brands always find ways to promote their products and services at the expense of vulnerable people by saying they're promoting dreams etc. This is all very concerning

    One thing that is being missed is if we promoted everyone who drinks soda, to cut it with half water!!!
    That is what I do, I never drink it straight.
    It only took me a few weeks of drinking it with half water for my taste buds to adjust and get use to it.
    That was a decade ago, and I find it’s more refreshing and healthy and less harmful for my body and weight gain and half the price and lasts twice as long!
    If we want to save people’s health, we need to point out that the soda is sold concentrated and it not meant to be drank full strength!

    The sad fact is India is being exposed to unhealthy fats such as vegetable seed oils and shortening (artificial butter) which have more trans fats. It isn't the saturated fat killing people. On top of that we are talking about countries that haven't really used enriched bleached flour up until now. Stick with healthy fats, real butter, and avoid processed flours because our bodies cant break down the other stuff and that is why there is an obesity epidemic. Fast food companies want to save money and cheapen on everything - including your safety.
