Even the wraith in Stargate have a better reason to not simply wipe out humanity: food.
They sleep, some wake up every 100 years or so to get a snack, then back to sleep to give human populations time to regrow.
And the last times humans tried to remove others from their holy land there was no holding back. So if humans being on the planet is so much worse that they send engineered monsters out, landing yourself or doing anything actually to "clean" the planet from their presence would be viable.

After Earth's lore is so ridiculous it almost comes back around to making sense. The government could be settling for a stalemate BECAUSE the Grell aren't innovating and maintaining the status quo allows the current eco-fascist government to stay in power.
The quarantine of earth could have been BECAUSE every other outpost was wiped out with overwhelming force and Nova Prime is inexplicably spared the worst weapons - the risk of re-inhabiting (or even travelling near) Earth could therefore be deemed too high a risk to the only other biosphere capable of supporting human life.
Fighting the URSA in sealed combat suits using thermal imaging COULD HAVE BEEN laughably effective in the opening monologue. That doesn't change the setup of The Kid having to face an Ursa without one, or The Dad having some kind of method-acting psychosis that can turn off his adrenal glands.
Personally, I'd have preferred a movie about what it's like to grow up when your Dad is a famous method actor and he spends months or even years of your life pretending to be other people. Only, without the bad sci-fi allegory on top.

The whole "sacredness prohibits planet surface damage" is actually a great way to force hand to hand combat in a futuristic sci fi setting, I actually really like that concept, but the "religion prohibits eyes"? You'd need some TOP tier world building to justify that contrivance.

    • @katevgrady
      @katevgrady 2 ปีที่แล้ว +85

@Always Plotting sure, that works fine. For me the crucial element wouldn't be the "how it happened" per se, but more the "why" the species would be so fanatical as to give up such an epic advantage. Like in earth religions, murder is quite often a sin, but damn near all of them are willing to kill in order to take/keep territory. Ending life is bad but we're very willing to do it for an advantage. Do you get what I mean? I'm rambling lol, but I already typed this out so I'm going with it. I never understood the emphasis on "no fear" in this movie... Doesn't Little Willy Style hide from the URSA in a glass ball or something at some point?? So why don't soldiers battling the URSA just wear a damn wet-suit and motorcycle helmet?? Surely, the thing isn't reading your mind, it's smelling the pheromones or whatever your body produces when stressed! Cover your body, problem solved!
I won't even get into idea of using some damn projectile weapons and/or pheromone-lure to fight these monsters. ANYTHING is better than battling them with close-range melee weapons with their ONLY way of finding you not being masked or hidden at all!
Not being afraid of the URSA is one thing, but feeling NO FEAR, period, when battling them seems impossible. You're not worried about ANY of the people under your command?
Sidenote: it's like when scuba divers dive with great white sharks. You're wearing a full-body rubber suit and full face mask... To the shark, you smell like a damn tire or something. Go out with just some snorkeling gear and swim trunks and see if that same shark doesn't take a little test-bite...

That reminds me of a great Star Trek theory, that posits that the reason the Borg so often attack with only one cube at a time is that they're farming other civilisations.
They send a single cube, which scares the locals something fierce and is just barely stopped. This make the locals panic and encourages them to develop new technology to try and defend themselves, tech the Borg can then acquire with their next visit. Then if the locals look like they're getting too powerful; that's when the hundreds of other cubes are sent to deliver the final decisive blow.

They kept playing games with them to include time travel shenanigans and only encouraged them to keep crafting better defenses. If you consider Discovery to be canon (I don't, personally, and I really don't care about No True Scotsman fallacies or other argumentation on the subject) then the Borg seriously messed up. Even without taking that into account, the future version of Starfleet according to Voyager and Enterprise had time travel and manipulation built right into their ships, never mind the "subatomic disruptors" they were armed with. They probably thought to employ the same tactic with the Federation and then realized their mistake too late given all the setbacks they were handed by the madwoman Janeway and the original un-cucked mad lad version of Picard.

*A explanation that "redeems" the film.*
What if Will Smith's character and the other Ghosters *were Psychopaths?*
That would explain the lack of fear … and their deficiencies in both parenting and _running society._
[BTW, Psychopaths are known for throwing rocks at animals when children, perhaps like father like son. Junior has unlocked his birthright and is now as emotionally damaged as dad].
As for settling on other planets including back on Earth, what if the Aliens will use their full military potential on other Worlds, and Nova Prime is the only "safe place" due to them handicapping themselves.
Any other Human Colonies get Base Delta Zeroed, so Nova Prime is the only place where the big issue is just stupid big blind predators … and that Humanity is _ruled by psychopaths that hamstring the Human countermeasures_ in order to make themselves super important and Humanities _only hope,_ instead of letting Humanity develop very effective technology and strategies that would completely negate the Ursa.
*Or…* perhaps the Aliens would be okay with Humanity moving back to Earth _(or anywhere else)_ … they only became anti Human once their own planetary temple was invaded, perhaps they were never bothered by Humans being on Earth.
What if the Ursa are also a *limited response* _just to get Humanity to move._ Keep pestering Humans with an annoyance, not a extermination attempt, just to get them to relocate. So in fact the opposite of the above _Base Delta Zero scenerio,_ if Humans leave Nova Prime the Aliens will leave them alone.
And that could also explain why "Will Smith" was so adamant about not going to Earth … can't let your fellow Novans/subjects know that there's a lush garden World that just happens to be Humans original home, waiting to be resettled.
But … that would mean that "Will Smith" no longer is the un-opposable leader of Humanity, as he's no longer vital to Humanity's survival _and a living God Emperor [oh I'm going to regret writing that last line]._
So he keeps Humanity trapped in this needless cycle, in order to preserve his own power.
And now he can hand the reigns over to his disturbed son one day, knowing that he also is a potential psychopath.
There could be a sequel/fanfic where Humanity tries to overthrow the Rangers, who are deliberately keeping Humanity in peril?

This wouldn't have been as stupid a movie (though the acting would have still sucked) if they just made it a fantasy movie. Dump all the advanced tech into the abyss. The Ursa track human fear using magic, everyone only has melee weapons because it's a medieval fantasy setting, etc. It would still not be good. But at least the universe would be a bit less stupid.
Anything to avoid the painful bending over backwards to explain why everyone is so dumb here. The humans don't realize that Earth has become habitable because...reasons. Their enemies don't give the Ursa the ability to adequately track their prey because...religion. All to defend a planet that is holy to them despite not living anywhere near it.

The planet being holy to the aliens is the most believable part of this movie/ story. That planet may be in an orbit around a star that is central to a constellation from the aliens planet that is itself central to their religion. The planet may be their version of a heaven or paradise. Their going there could be explained as an pilgrimage that takes place every so many of their years for religious reasons.

And the Novans looked on at the Giant clad in red armor, adorned with ruby inlaid blood drops and a winged blood drop motive on his left shoulder, as he lay waste to the Ursa with what could only be described as a small automatic grenade launcher. Unhelmed, he gave off no sign of fear, moving far quicker and more quietly than such a massive figure should move, with only hints of a deeper wrath burning in the eyes of the unkown warrior.
Within moments the last of the Ursa was slain and as he turned, the Novans could finally see the face of their savior more clearly, a pale, white face of noble bearing, framed by long hair of a golden hue. He finally addressed them: "Fear not, for the Emperor has sent his Angels to save you and bring you back into the fold of the Imperium."
Well, anyway, the Novans are just what happens when you have an actor that was influenced by a third rate science fiction writer turned cult leader, tries to create a science fiction universe. There was no regard given to all the implications of the technologies an advanced civilization with FTL technology would have. There is also no terra forming, no experimentation with space habitats (e.g. O'Neil cylinder and its larger cousins) and other such possibilities.

Sure, she could have always thought 'I owe him, he risked his life for my kids'. However animals work based off of instinct instead of reasoning. On top of that he couldn't even protect her children. She owed him nothing.
She also could have put her own safety first if she wanted to have a future as well as another nest of children; by leaving him to freeze while she looked for shelter.
Or if she truly did evolve to be hostile towards humans, why didn't she eat him for energy?
Whether she's just some type of plot armor or if she's meant to symbolize something I'm totally not sure. All I know is that her compassion and sacrifice have left a mark on me these past few years. When I think about her I always ask myself, 'why did she do this?'
