Thanks for the post! We are 10 months into owning Dexters now. I'm thankful for channels like yours, Pete's, and Sweetbriar's for sharing your knowledge!!

Way to catch that early, that's the benefit of being hands-on with your heard.

I definitely can see it. Thankfully it hasn't been a problem here in Minnesota the last couple years.

Was around cattle my whole life, we never had a pink eye problem I ever remember until I got Dexters. First full summer I was going grass heavy with them and mineral blocks. I had 2 cows get it, one calf. Treated with LA300 and eye patches as it was pretty bad. I was talking to my neighbor who never finished high school, but I consider a expert with a vet degree when it comes to cattle. He sat in his rocking chair and said you know, not one other cow in the neighborhood has a issue, the only difference I can see is how your getting mineral to them. I later found out that deficiencies can be part of the issue, not clipping pastures is another, and flys. At the time I was already doing fly control and it was working well, pasture was clipped so the higher dead grass they don't like wasn't irritating it, and it was at that time I decided to go back to grinding ear corn and adding my mineral to it and then feeding that by hand daily in bunks so everyone got some as we always did with our dairy cows. I have not had any outbreaks since and it has been years now. Not sure what happened, nor exactly what solved it, but I am glad it hasn't been back.

I have had one cow with it way back when I first brought cows here. This year has been horrible. Flys have not been bad this year. Almost seams like the heat burned them out. I don’t know. Vet didn’t have much advise. Just said to keep the flys off best I could, and that everyone had problems with it. Thanks for watching sir!

@@dexterranch I have heard the hot sun causes issues and irritates the eye muscles, but in my case I couldn't make a connection since the cows here are in the barn during the hottest/brightest part of the day. Also heard dust irritates and causes issues, but no trouble with that here in the mountains anyhow, hard to blow around clay and rocks😆.

Interesting. Gabe Brown claims that most pink eye is caused by too much protein. I wonder if your new hay has more protein than some of the cows are able to handle.

Interesting. I have never heard this. That said my cows are still on grass. Haven’t started them on hay yet. We had a lot of grass die and it got really dry for a while in my area. Every farmer I talk to locally has had problems this year to some extent. I know fescue grass can get in their eye and mess with them but I don’t have much fescue. Been a tough year dealing with it constantly. Hopefully it doesn’t continue in years to come. Hope all is well!
